Virtual: Elizabeth Whelan's Grab A Pencil Breakfast Club
Join Martha's Vineyard artist Elizabeth Whelan and sketch around the world from the comfort of your own home with a virtual breakfast club art gathering every Tuesday from February 20th through April 23, 2024, from 6:30 to 7:30 am.

This is not a class, just an opportunity to sketch together. There's no need to show your work, and each week we visit a new location via a travel webcam. You also don't need to have your own camera on, so you can attend in pajamas with your coffee and no one will know! It's all about having a bit of fun and sketching the changing light that happens in an hour, just like plein air drawing/painting. Elizabeth will also have one camera aimed at her sketchbook so that you can see what she is doing during the hour.

Sign up once for all sessions -- the login info will be the same every week.

Virtual: Memoir Writing with Caroline Joy Adams

Our theme for this memoir writing session will be writing about the changes, big and small, desired or not, that we have experienced, or are going through
right now in our lives. As we leave winter behind and enter the most welcome season of spring, it is an excellent time to contemplate and then write about the shifts that are perhaps key turning points in our lives.

Love Song for the Vineyard Lawn
Join us for a presentation about Vineyard Lawns with the Vineyard Conservation Society! Learn the basics of having a lawn that’s safe for children, pets, and ponds. A Vineyard Lawn uses no pesticides, no chemical fertilizers, and only occasional watering if truly necessary. Mixed grass varieties and native plantings are hardier, better adapted to local conditions, and require less time and attention. And a Vineyard Lawn will always be safe for kids, pets, and wildlife – no need to check product labels and Google for the latest news on potential health effects.

Virtual: War in Ukraine After Two Years, with Professor Michael Strmiska

It has been two years since the war in Ukraine began. Via Zoom, Professor Michael Strmiska will discuss the following.

• The ups and downs of the war to this point, from both the Ukrainian and Russian viewpoints
• The human cost of the war--the death toll on both sides, Russia's kidnapping of Ukrainian children
• The mixed record of the sanctions imposed on Russia
• The success of Russia in forming links with China, Iran, North Korea and the "Global South"
• The rallying of Western nations under President Biden's leadership
• Ukraine's impressive military successes, including rapid technological adaptation
• The anxiety of the Baltic States and Poland about what a Russian victory might mean for them
• Peace at any price? Should Ukraine keep fighting or let Russia have half of their country?
• Worst case scenario if the US turns away--tyranny triumphant
• Why Ukraine matters: why Americans should care

Michael Strmiska teaches World History and Asian History at SUNY-Orange (Orange County Community College) in Middletown, New York, and is currently teaching a class on Russian and Eastern European History. He earned his PhD in Religious Studies at Boston University, and has been awarded two Fulbright Fellowships for teaching at universities in Lithuania and Latvia, as well as the 2017 SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Research and Creative Activities. He visited Lithuania in January of this year and had many discussions with colleagues about the situation in Ukraine. He is working on a book discussing the important contributions made by the Pagan, Jewish, Mulsims and Gypsy communities and religious traditions to the societies of Eastern Europe.

Virtual: Productive Conversations Without Confrontation

Program via Zoom offered by the News Literacy Project

When was the last time you had a conversation about current events with someone who holds an opposing view? If that experience left you feeling frustratedand shut down, join this virtual Cape & Islands discussion with the News Literacy Project to learn tools for speaking about current events and listening across divides. In today’s divided political climate it can feel impossible to hold civil conversations about current events – especially when misinformation and conspiracy theories abound. However, learning a few news literacy skills can help you keep conversations grounded in fact while maintaining the civility that is essential in a thriving democracy.

The News Literacy Project, a nonpartisan education nonprofit, is building a national movement to advance the practice of news literacy throughout American society, creating better informed, more engaged and more empowered individuals—and ultimately a stronger democracy.

This program is brought to you in collaboration with many CLAMS libraries

Virtual: Writing About Nature

Nature writing can include something as brief as a whimsical poem about a crazy-looking bug, beautiful butterfly, or a colorful bird in your backyard -- or it can encompass a book-length treatise on climate change – or anything in between.

It can touch on great adventures you have had, perhaps in wild and wonderful places, or gorgeous parks, botanical gardens, farms or vineyards you have visited. It can be inspirational; personal and poetic; entertaining; or mostly educational or informative – depending on your intended purpose and potential audience.

If you love to explore nature – whether you wish to reflect on intense storms or serene sunsets; whales or wildflowers; trees or tigers -- and would like a chance to discuss and write about some of your most memorable, beautiful or surprising nature-themed experiences, come join us for this fun, relaxing workshop led by Caroline Joy Adams.

Caroline Joy Adams,  M.Ed. is an artist, writer, and photographer who has taught writing at the college level (most recently in the MFA in

Creative Writing program for Fairfield University )-- in addition to hundreds of writing workshops over the past 20 years, including in locations

such as: *Mystic, CT * Phoenix, AZ * Kennebunk, Maine *Maui, Hawaii* Newport, RI * Boston, Woods Hole, and Martha’s Vineyard, MA * Big Bear Lake, CA *

The author of seven books, including the 'Power to Write', her newest title,

'Transformational Journaling: A Helpful Guide to a Heart-Centered Writing Journey' was published in the fall of 2023.

Limited to 12 participants, pre-registration required. All are welcome, no experience necessary.

This event is free, and will be held on Zoom, sponsored by the Vineyard Haven Public Library, on Martha’s Vineyard,

The News Literacy Project, a nonpartisan education nonprofit, is building a national movement to advance the practice of news literacy throughout American society, creating better informed, more engaged and more empowered individuals— and ultimately a stronger democracy.

History in Crust; Two Narratives of Pastry and Power from 17th-Century New England

Pie-making may seem like an odd lens for scrutinizing 17th-century interactions between Indigenous People and European Colonizers, but careful analysis of cultural details—yes, even of pastry— can help historians squeeze surprising amounts of information out of scanty documents. Join Paula Marcoux to hear the stories of the first two colonial pastries—one French and one English—documented to have been baked here on the shores of what is now southeastern Massachusetts. In an examination of the pivotal yet under-studied events relevant to these pies, you’ll learn what is known of their bakers, the singular situations in which the baking occurred, the most probable types of ovens to have been used, and best of all, how the pies were likely to appear and taste.

Paula Marcoux is a Plymouth-based food historian with a background in archaeology, cooking, and living history. She is the author of Cooking with Fire and many magazine articles, most recently for Gastro Obscura.

Historic Boats of New England

Each boat has a tale to tell. In a Class All Their Own: Unique and Historic Boats of New England (Globe Pequot Press, 2020) Tom Verde recounts the colorful stories of nearly forty classic/unique New England vessels. These include the fabled history of the cat boat; the first fiberglass sailing yacht; a NY ferry boat repurposed as a houseboat; a Down East rum runner; racing rivalries in the Sound; the French love affair with American boat designs; and the Jazz Age era of luxury yachting, among others. In his presentation, Verde will discuss several boats featured in his book, including their classes and designers, as well as their relationships to the waters in which they sailed, raced, and cruised.

Tom Verde is a freelance writer whose work has appeared in the New York Times, Yankee Magazine, and on National Public Radio. He is the author of Maine Ghosts and Legends: 30 Encounters with the Supernatural (Down East Books) and In a Class All Their Own: Unique and Historic Boats of New England (Globe Pequot Press). He lives in Pawcatuck, Connecticut.
