    Contact: Gail Brown   765-2791   gail.brown@voorpl.org

The nonfiction book discussion group meets every other month (the second Monday at 7:00) to discuss a thought-provoking nonfiction book about about history, politics, contemporary issues, etc.

The acclaimed Ha-Joon Chang is a voice of sanity-and wit-in this lighthearted book with a serious purpose: to question the assumptions behind the dogma and sheer hype that the dominant school of neoliberal economists have spun since the Age of Reagan. 23 Things They Don't Tell You about Capitalism uses twenty-three short essays (a few great examples: "There Is No Such Thing as a Free Market," "The Washing Machine Has Changed the World More than the Internet Has") to equip readers with an understanding of how global capitalism works, and doesn't, while offering a vision of how we can shape capitalism to humane ends, instead of becoming slaves of the market.

Please register at the Information Desk and pick up a copy of the book (cost $5.00).

Logan Pryce Makes a Mess by Grace Gilmore

It’s 1892 in Maple Ridge, Illinois, and Logan Pryce is worried about his family. His father needs to find a new job – maybe in another city -- because their farm is failing. Logan offers to earn some money by selling his latest invention, but his parents tell him that everything will be fine. Logan’s father is hired for a temporary job at the general store and Logan cannot wait to lend a hand, but his eagerness may cause his father to lose this much needed job. Can Logan’s mistake be fixed in time? Join us for a fun evening of book-related discussion and activities. The library will be closed except for the book discussion participants and their families.     Contact: Gail Brown   765-2791   gail.brown@voorpl.org

Matthew Rozell is an award-winning history teacher, author, speaker and blogger on the topic of the most cataclysmic events in the history of mankind - World War II and the Holocaust. Rozell has been featured as the “ABC World News Person of the Week” and has had his work as a teacher filmed for the CBS Evening News, NBC Learn, the Israeli Broadcast Authority, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and the New York State United Teachers.

At the height of World War II, LOOK Magazine profiled a small upstate New York community for a series of articles portraying it as the wholesome, patriotic model of life on the home front. Seventy years later, Rozell and his students track down over two dozen veterans residing around "Hometown, USA" who fought the war in the Pacific, from Pearl Harbor to the surrender at Tokyo Bay. They rescue and resurrect firsthand accounts of combat and brotherhood, of captivity and redemption, and the aftermath of a war that left no American community unscathed. The Things Our Fathers Saw contain the stories that the magazine could not tell, from a vanishing generation speaking to America today.

As the founder of the World War II Living History Project, Mr. Rozell and his students recorded the testimony of hundreds from the WWII generation, one person at a time. One of his interviews, and his dogged pursuit thereafter, led to the reuniting of a train transport of Holocaust survivors with their actual American liberators over 60 years later and the discovery of one of the most iconic photographs of the Holocaust.

Books will be available for purchase and signing.

For more on Matthew Rozell, visit his web site at: http://matthewrozell.com/

Everett Rau is proof that it’s never too late to become a first time author! Stand Tall: Against the Odds is an inspirational memoir about Rau’s life and farming in twentieth century America.

At age 97, Everett Rau still farms the land where he was born in 1919. Hoping that his tales of survival can inspire others, he reminisces about early life in Altamont, farming during the Depression, working for General Electric in World War II, and the rise and catastrophic failure of his own small business.

The nonfiction book discussion group meets every other month (the second Monday at 7:00) to discuss a thought-provoking nonfiction book about about history, politics, contemporary issues, etc.

The summer of 1927 began with one of the signature events of the twentieth century: on May 21, 1927, Charles Lindbergh became the first man to cross the Atlantic by plane nonstop, and when he landed in Le Bourget airfield near Paris, he ignited an explosion of worldwide rapture and instantly became the most famous person on the planet. Meanwhile, the titanically talented Babe Ruth was beginning his assault on the home run record, which would culminate on September 30 with his sixtieth blast, one of the most resonant and durable records in sports history. In between those dates a Queens housewife named Ruth Snyder and her corset-salesman lover garroted her husband, leading to a murder trial that became a huge tabloid sensation. Alvin “Shipwreck” Kelly sat atop a flagpole in Newark, New Jersey, for twelve days—a new record. The American South was clobbered by unprecedented rain and by flooding of the Mississippi basin, a great human disaster, the relief efforts for which were guided by the uncannily able and insufferably pompous Herbert Hoover. Calvin Coolidge interrupted an already leisurely presidency for an even more relaxing three-month vacation in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The gangster Al Capone tightened his grip on the illegal booze business through a gaudy and murderous reign of terror and municipal corruption. The first true “talking picture,” Al Jolson’sThe Jazz Singer, was filmed and forever changed the motion picture industry. The four most powerful central bankers on earth met in secret session on a Long Island estate and made a fateful decision that virtually guaranteed a future crash and depression.
All this and much, much more transpired in that epochal summer of 1927, and Bill Bryson captures its outsized personalities, exciting events, and occasional just plain weirdness with his trademark vividness, eye for telling detail, and delicious humor. In that year America stepped out onto the world stage as the main event, and One Summer transforms it all into narrative nonfiction of the highest order.

Please register at the Information Desk and pick up a copy of the book (cost $5.00).

Calling All Pets! by Kate Finch

Twins Meg and Charlie are moving into their great-great-aunt's hotel, and they're in for some surprises! The run-down hotel is full of cool old rooms, a rooftop garden, and an elevator. There is one big problem – the hotel doesn't have any guests. But when Meg and Charlie volunteer to look after a neighbor's golden retriever puppy, the fuzzy little fur-ball gives them a great idea. They are going to transform their new home into an amazing hotel for pets! Join us for a fun evening of book-related discussion and activities. The library will be closed except for the book discussion participants and their families. Grades 2-3, please register at the information desk and pick up a copy of the book.

The nonfiction book discussion group meets every other month (the second Monday at 7:00) to discuss a thought-provoking nonfiction book about about history, politics, contemporary issues, etc.

At the height of World War II, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, was home to 75,000 residents, and consumed more electricity than New York City, yet it was shrouded in such secrecy that it did not appear on any map. Thousands of civilians, many of them young women from small towns across the U.S., were recruited to this secret city, enticed by the promise of solid wages and war-ending work. What were they actuallydoing there? Very few knew. The purpose of this mysterious government project was kept a secret from the outside world and from the majority of the residents themselves. Some wondered why, despite the constant work and round-the-clock activity in this makeshift town, did no tangible product of any kind ever seem to leave its guarded gates? The women who kept this town running would find out at the end of the war, when Oak Ridge’s secret was revealed and changed the world forever.

The nonfiction book discussion group meets every other month (the second Monday at 7:00) to discuss a thought-provoking nonfiction book about about history, politics, contemporary issues, etc.

In this “enjoyable, fast-paced tale” (The Economist), master historian David McCullough “shows as never before how two Ohio boys from a remarkable family taught the world to fly” (The Washington Post)and “captures the marvel of what the Wrights accomplished” (The Wall Street Journal). He draws on the extensive Wright family papers to profile not only the brothers but their sister, Katharine, without whom things might well have gone differently for them. Essential reading, this is “a story of timeless importance, told with uncommon empathy and fluency…about what might be the most astonishing feat mankind has ever accomplished…The Wright Brothers soars” (The New York Times Book Review).
