Foiled by Jane Yolen

Aliera Carstairs fumbles her way through the humdrum days in high school, where she doesn’t fit in. She feels most alive when she is fencing with the foil her Mom picked up at a tag sale.  The odd gem on the hilt of her foil is a hint at the wild adventure in store for Aliera when she meets a strange new boy at school. After a brief discussion of this graphic novel, we’ll try some role-playing games and learn some fencing positions. (Grades 6 and up, please register and pick up a copy of the book at the Information Desk.)

    Contact: Tracey Pause    518-765-2791   tracey.pause@voorheesvillelibrary.org

In the book, the author Steven Sandler has tried to explain modern Freudian psychotherapy and how it has evolved over time. This book is not a textbook but a general non-fiction book for the average reader. Steven has framed it as a series of imaginary conversations with Sigmund Freud in Vienna.  The chapters alternate between these meetings in Vienna and the description of actual cases from my psychiatry practice at Albany Medical Center.

The author will discuss his book and show a videotape of a session (using an actor as the patient). The program is for adults that are interested in understanding emotions, emotional problems, and how therapy can help.

This book is availble for check out at the library.

Logan Pryce Makes a Mess by Grace Gilmore

It’s 1892 in Maple Ridge, Illinois, and Logan Pryce is worried about his family. His father needs to find a new job – maybe in another city -- because their farm is failing. Logan offers to earn some money by selling his latest invention, but his parents tell him that everything will be fine. Logan’s father is hired for a temporary job at the general store and Logan cannot wait to lend a hand, but his eagerness may cause his father to lose this much needed job. Can Logan’s mistake be fixed in time? Join us for a fun evening of book-related discussion and activities. The library will be closed except for the book discussion participants and their families. Grades 2-3, please register at the information desk and pick up a copy of the book

    Contact: Gail Brown   765-2791   gail.brown@voorpl.org

Matthew Rozell is an award-winning history teacher, author, speaker and blogger on the topic of the most cataclysmic events in the history of mankind - World War II and the Holocaust. Rozell has been featured as the “ABC World News Person of the Week” and has had his work as a teacher filmed for the CBS Evening News, NBC Learn, the Israeli Broadcast Authority, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and the New York State United Teachers.

At the height of World War II, LOOK Magazine profiled a small upstate New York community for a series of articles portraying it as the wholesome, patriotic model of life on the home front. Seventy years later, Rozell and his students track down over two dozen veterans residing around "Hometown, USA" who fought the war in the Pacific, from Pearl Harbor to the surrender at Tokyo Bay. They rescue and resurrect firsthand accounts of combat and brotherhood, of captivity and redemption, and the aftermath of a war that left no American community unscathed. The Things Our Fathers Saw contain the stories that the magazine could not tell, from a vanishing generation speaking to America today.

As the founder of the World War II Living History Project, Mr. Rozell and his students recorded the testimony of hundreds from the WWII generation, one person at a time. One of his interviews, and his dogged pursuit thereafter, led to the reuniting of a train transport of Holocaust survivors with their actual American liberators over 60 years later and the discovery of one of the most iconic photographs of the Holocaust.

Books will be available for purchase and signing.

For more on Matthew Rozell, visit his web site at: http://matthewrozell.com/

Everett Rau is proof that it’s never too late to become a first time author! Stand Tall: Against the Odds is an inspirational memoir about Rau’s life and farming in twentieth century America.

At age 97, Everett Rau still farms the land where he was born in 1919. Hoping that his tales of survival can inspire others, he reminisces about early life in Altamont, farming during the Depression, working for General Electric in World War II, and the rise and catastrophic failure of his own small business.
