El Deafo by Cece Bell

Going to school and making new friends can be tough. What about going to school and making new friends while wearing a bulky hearing aid strapped to your chest? That requires superpowers! In this funny, poignant graphic novel memoir, author/illustrator Cece Bell chronicles her hearing loss at a young age.  Because the author/illustrator is a deaf person and cannot visit us via Skype, she has agreed to take e-mail questions, which she will answer in time for the discussion.  Bring a potluck dish to share. Beverages and dessert provided. (Grades 4-7 with a caregiver. Please register and pick up a book at the Information Desk.)

Lyricist Rebecca Hall is credited with compositions “that sound as timeless as any traditional songs” (“Northern Sky,” UK) while producer/multi-instrumentalist/husband Ken Anderson is lauded for his “remarkable affinity for instrumental embellishment” (“No Depression”) and for crafting Hungrytown’s “gorgeous vocal harmonies” (“Folk and Roots,” UK). For more information about Hungrytown, visit their web site at http://hungrytown.net/index/ .

Still Life With BreadcrumbsStill Life with Bread Crumbs by Anna Quindlen

"Once a world-famous photographer, known for her iconic image, "Still Life with Bread Crumbs," Rebecca Winter has drifted out of the spotlight, and is now more inclined to think of herself as the Artist Formerly Known as Rebecca Winter. As her income dries up, she decides to leave behind the expensive world she knows in New York City, sublet her apartment, and move to a small, inexpensive cabin in the country, where her life falls into a quieter rhythm. Withthe help of a local man named Jim Bates, she begins to see the world around her in new, deeper dimensions. At a point in her life when she thought so much was behind her, Rebecca finds herself with a second chance-at life, love, her career, and most important, her understanding of herself."--from publisher's web site.

"The Dane family's roots tangle deep in the Ozark Mountain town of Henbane, but that doesn't keep sixteen-year-old Lucy Dane from being treated like an outsider. Folks still whisper about her mother, a bewitching young stranger who inspired local myths when she vanished years ago. When one of Lucy's few friends, slow-minded Cheri, is found murdered, Lucy feels haunted by the two lost girls--the mother she never knew and the friend she couldn't protect. Everything changes when Lucy stumbles across Cheri's necklace in an abandoned trailer and finds herself drawn into a search for answers. What Lucy discovers makes it impossible to ignore the suspicion cast on her own kin. More alarming, she suspects Cheri's death could be linked to her mother's disappearance, and the connection between the two puts Lucy at risk of losing everything. In a place where the bonds of blood weigh heavy, Lucy must decide where her allegiances lie."

"Ephram Jenkins has never forgotten the beautiful girl with the long braids running through the piney woods of Liberty, their small East Texas town. Young Ruby, "the kind of pretty it hurt to look at," is already quite damaged, but Ephram is forcibly drawn to her. As soon as she becomes a young woman and has any power of her own, Ruby flees suffocating Liberty for the bright pull of 1950s New York City. Years later, when a funeral forces her to return home, 30-year-old Ruby will find herself reliving the devastating violence of her girlhood. With the terrifying realization that she might not be strong enough to fight her way back out, Ruby struggles to survive her memories of the town's dark past. Meanwhile, Ephram must choose between loyalty to the sister who raised and stood by him and the chance for a life with the woman he has loved since he was a boy."--Provided by publisher."

Breadcrumbs by Anne Ursu

Once upon a time, Hazel and Jack were best friends, but that was before he stopped talking to her and disappeared into a forest with a mysterious woman made of ice. Now it's up to Hazel to go in after him. Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's "The Snow Queen," Breadcrumbs is a stunningly original fairy tale of modern-day America, a dazzling ode to the power of fantasy, and a heartbreaking meditation on how growing up is as much a choice as it is something that happens to us.

We are excited to have the author, Anne Ursu, visit us virtually via Skpe! She will be joining us after the potluck dinner. Bring a potluck dish to share. Beverages and dessert provided. (For moms and their grade 4-6 daughters). Please register and pick up a book at the Information Desk.

"Their average age was twenty-five. They came from Berkeley, Cambridge, Paris, London, Chicago--and arrived in New Mexico ready for adventure, or at least resigned to it. But hope quickly turned to hardship as they were forced to adapt to a rugged military town where everything was a secret, including what their husbands were doing at the lab. They lived in barely finished houses with P.O. box addresses in a town wreathed with barbed wire, all for the benefit of a project that didn't exist as far as the public knew. Though they were strangers, they joined together--adapting to a landscape as fierce as it was absorbing, full of the banalities of everyday life and the drama of scientific discovery. And while the bomb was being invented, babies were born, friendships were forged, children grew up, and Los Alamos gradually transformed from an abandoned school on a hill into a real community: one that was strained by the words they couldn't say out loud, the letters they couldn't send home, the freedom they didn't have. But the end of the war would bring even bigger challenges to the people of Los Alamos, as the scientists and their families struggled with the burden of their contribution to the most destructive force in the history of mankind. The Wives of Los Alamos is a novel that sheds light onto one of the strangest and most monumental research projects in modern history. It's a testament to a remarkable group of women who carved out a life for themselves, in spite of the chaos of the war and the shroud of intense secrecy."--Provided by publisher. "

In honor of the VPL’s first hundred years of life, a new poetry group is forming at the library.  We will discuss individual poems authored by either the member or someone the member has interest in.  Members may bring poems, brief articles, memoirs or quotes concerning poetry.  Members may come empty-handed, but with a head full of perspectives and ideas.  The group will be as informal as possible, as long as the subject for discussion is connected to poetry.  Meeting times are the second and fourth Thursday of every month from 6:30 to 9 in the evening.  Anything is possible, as Yentl and Avigdor said.

Whiskey and Charlie by Annabel Smith

Whiskey and Charlie might have come from the same family, but they'd tell you two completely different stories about growing up. Whiskey is everything Charlie is not--bold, daring, carefree--and Charlie blames his twin brother for always stealing the limelight, always getting everything, always pushing Charlie back. By the time the twins reach adulthood, they are barely even speaking to each other... When Charlie hears that Whiskey has been in a terrible accident and has slipped into a coma, Charlie can't make sense of it. Who is he without Whiskey?"--Amazon.com.
