The End of Manners by Francesca Marciano

Maria photographs food. She began her career as a photojournalist, but the photograph that made her famous also traumatized her and made her switch her career to snapping gorgeous pictures of inanimate objects. She reluctantly agrees to take an assignment in Afghanistan, where she'll take pictures for a story about young Afghan women who set themselves on fire to avoid forced marriages. Imo Glass, the British journalist who's writing the story, is a domineering personality, and Maria follows her meekly into villages where they are sometimes welcomed, but more often met with suspicion.

Join this discussion by registering and picking up a copy of the book at the reference desk. For more information visit the Reading Cafe website.

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane
by Kate DiCamillo

Edward Tulane is a china rabbit with an extensive wardrobe. He belongs to 10-year-old Abilene, who thinks almost as highly of Edward as Edward does of himself and showers him with utmost care and devotion. Edward is always very pleased with himself, until one day, he becomes lost and his life is never the same! An extraordinary story "of the heart" with an exciting cast of characters, life-changing adventures, and a universal message of the redemptive power of love.

Join us for an evening of book-related discussion, activities, and refreshments. Parents are welcome. Register at the reference desk and pick up a copy of the book. The library will be closed except for the book discussion participants and their families.

    Deaf Sentence by David Lodge

“Deafness is comic, as blindness is tragic,” declares retired university professor Desmond Bates, who has lost much of his hearing. Ironically, as a teacher of linguistics, he made his career on the study of language. Now when people speak to him he hears only gibberish. His wife is annoyed at his reluctance to participate in social events, his father’s health and mental state are declining, and an obnoxious American graduate student has bullied him into being her thesis advisor. Can Desmond keep his equanimity? Lodge writes with humor about the trials and tribulations of an ordinary man.

Bacardi and the Long Fight for Cuba by Tom Gjelten

Facundo Bacardi Massó, founder and patriarch of the Bacardi dynasty, emigrated to Cuba from Catalonia at age 15. He started out as a humble shopkeeper, started making rum and learned to filter and age the product so that it developed a mellow taste. His Cuban-born sons continued the Bacardi tradition of distilling the finest rum on the island. Several family members were associated with revolutionaries fighting to overthrow Spanish rule. This combination of capitalist savvy and revolutionary fervor characterized the family for generations Gjelten follows Cuban history and the fortunes of Bacardi and Compa?ía from the 1800’s to the present.

Roscoe Riley Rules #1: Never Glue Your Friends to Chairs by: Katherine Applegate The first book in an uproariously funny series introduces readers to Roscoe, a good-hearted, mishap-prone first-grader. Roscoe tells his own story about the adventures of first grade, yet one story in particular has unforeseen consequences. The students’ bobbing antennas that they must wear for the spelling bee keep slipping, so Roscoe decides to offer assistance by using Super-Mega-Gonzo-Glue that results in a very sticky situation! Join us for an evening of book-related discussion, activities, and refreshments. Parents are welcome. Register at the reference desk and pick up a copy of the book.     Gossamer by: Lois Lowry Littlest One is an invisible spirit who is in training to be a dream-giver, blending pieces of happy memories with details of daily life for people as they sleep. She helps a suffering foster child at night, bestowing healing memories in his dreams. The foster child’s dreams become a battleground between good and evil as Littlest One fights the sinister Hordes that torment him with nightmares. This is a beautifully written story with a profound message about how the ordinary and simple things in life can have an extraordinary affect on one’s perspective and how pleasant memories help to quell the nightmarish reality of sadness and pain. Join us for an evening of book-related discussion, activities, and refreshments. Parents are welcome. Register at the reference desk and pick up a copy of the book.     The Way of the World by Ron Suskind

Ibrahim, an Afghani high school student in the U.S. on an exchange program, is puzzled and alarmed by many aspects of American life. Why do some American women wear so few clothes? How can men and women who aren’t related talk with each other in public? - Usman, a native of Pakistan, works in Washington, D.C. One day, walking past the White House, he’s detained and interrogated by the Secret Service. - Abdul al-Ghizzawi, a prisoner at Guantanamo, is sick. His American lawyer is trying to get medical treatment for him, to no avail. Suskind profiles these three Muslim men against the backdrop of political events in this fascinating look at the post 9/11 world.
