What is consent? What is sexual assault? How can you protect yourself? Where do you go for help? A panel of experts will facilitate an interactive presentation for older teens that will emphasize practical, hands-on skills and information to promote safety and independence. Using the national “It’s On Us: Stop Sexual Assault” campaign and other resources, the discussion will focus on sexual assault and the topics of recognizing sexual assault, identifying situations in which sexual assault may occur, bystander awareness, strategies to know when and how to intervene, creating an environment where sexual assault is unacceptable, how to help survivors of sexual assault, and prevention strategies. For ages 16 and older, parents welcome to view as well. Teen attendees will earn Community Service credit. Please register by May 22 to receive the Zoom link for this presentation.

Students will explore diversity, equity and inclusion as we eat our way through "Tomatoes in my Lunchbox" by Costantia Manoli! Participants will use their creativity with meats, cheeses, vegetables, fruits and herbs to make lunch box charcuterie boards. Bring along a bento box, if you have one, and learn to pack a unique lunch. Students will use their math and reading skills and enjoy eating the recipes they have created. For grades 1-4. Looking for something crafty to do on a hot summer afternoon? Join seasoned basket maker and teacher, Susan Phillips, for a hands-on class to learn the basics of basket weaving. You will weave a flat reed basket using simple tools and naturally grown materials. A brief overview of basket making and the various materials used will be provided. No experience is necessary and all materials, supplies, and equipment will be provided. Susan Phillips has been a basket maker for 40 years and taught basket weaving at Heldeberg Workshop. Learning how to solder w/ proper soldering techniques is a fundamental skill for every maker. Volunteer Halsey Brown will teach us the basics of soldering irons and safety tips. Then you can solder your own Robot Solder Skill Badge to show off your new skill. Grades 7-12, please register.

Join us for an exciting evening of cultural enrichment and books! Saadia Faruqi, Pakistani-American Muslim author of children's and young adult books, will visit us virtually to discuss her many popular books for youth that focus on themes of diversity, equity, inclusion, history, culture, friendship, understanding, and family. Students in grades 3-9 may select any of her award-winning chapter books, picture books, graphic novels and/or novels in preparation for Ms. Faruqi's virtual author visit. The library will have digital and print copies of her books available beginning June 15. A sampling of some Pakistani food will be part of the program. Caregivers or any interested adults are invited to attend as well. For grades 3-9 and caregivers.

This interactive program for parents/caregivers and youth celebrates family strengths through fun activities. Participating parents/caregivers and youth will learn and practice strategies for successful family communication, reaffirm what youth and adults need from each other, and discover the power of compliments and positive communication. The Strengthening Families Workshop strives to empower families by celebrating family strengths, improving communication skills, and providing support to both youth and parents/caregivers.
