Bus will leave Voorheesville at 7:45am and return around 6pm.

Join us on a day trip to visit the Emily Dickinson House in Amherst, Mass.  We will have a 60 minute private guided tour of both The Homestead and Evergreens family houses.  After the tour, there is time to explore the museum grounds and village on your own – a short walk to various eateries and shopping.

As an optional add-on, Dennis Sullivan has set up a small group afternoon viewing of original Emily Dickinson documents at the nearby Amherst College Archives.  Space considerations at the Archives mean there are only 15 persons allowed, so sign up early if this interests you.

$55 per person/ $50 for FOL members

Price includes transportation and Museum entry fee.

A Boy Called Bat by Alana Arnold

For Bixby Alexander Tam (nicknamed Bat), life tends to be full of surprises, some good and some not so good. One day is a good-surprise day, because Bat’s mom, a veterinarian, has brought home a baby skunk, which she needs to take care of until she can hand him over to a wild-animal shelter. The minute Bat meets the kit, he knows they belong together and he’s got one month to show his mom that a baby skunk might just make a pretty terrific pet. The Library will be closed except for the book discussion participants and their families. Grades 4 -5, please register at the Information Desk and pick up a copy of the book.

This program explores the fascinating history of destroyer escorts, the USS SLATER, and the lives of three men who served in the United States Navy during World War II and are tied in some way to these trim but deadly warships. The first is Frank Slater, killed in action at Guadalcanal and for whom the USS SLATER is named. The second, Leonard Roy Harmon, coming from different circumstances but finding himself serving alongside Frank Slater aboard the USS SAN FRANCISCO, also lost his life and would receive the posthumous distinction of being the first African American to have a ship named in his honor. Finally, the remarkable story of a destroyer escort, the USS SAMUEL B ROBERTS will be examined, highlighting the actions of Paul Henry Carr.

Daily, we witness Planet Earth growing increasingly warm and increasingly foreign to us. Interspersed with erratic weather patterns, raging forest fires, stultifying drought, violent hurricanes, melting glaciers and flooding, acidifying oceans, we feel the plight of environmental refugees, roaming seas of people fleeing unspeakable upheaval. We sense the suffering of myriad animals teetering at the brink of extinction and we know in our bones that waning biodiversity and the 6th  mass extinction portend growing dis-ease. Many of us feel anxious, depressed, or caught, unsure what we, as individual, can do. Bringing together research about climate change with research about physical & mental health and well-being, this talk offers a doorway into a win/win solution

The nonfiction book discussion group meets every other month (the second Monday at 7:00) to discuss a thought-provoking nonfiction book about about history, politics, contemporary issues, etc.

At the center of Mountains Beyond Mountains stands Paul Farmer. Doctor, Harvard Professor, renowned infectious-disease specialist, anthropologist, the recipient of a MacArthur "genius" grant, world-class Robin Hood, Farmer was brought up in a bus and on a boat, and in medical school found his life's calling: to diagnose and cure infectious diseases and to bring the lifesaving tools of modern medicine to those who need them most. This book shows how radical change can be fostered in situations that seem insurmountable, and it also shows how a meaningful life can be created, as Farmer - brilliant, charismatic, charming, both a leader in international health and a doctor who finds time to make house calls in Boston and the mountains of Haiti - blasts through convention to get results.

Please register at the Information Desk and pick up a copy of the book (cost $5.00).

Healthy, Delicious, and Easy Food for the Holiday Season

This food demo and tasting by Nava Atlas will show you how to enjoy a healthier holiday season. Delicious food can be enjoyed guilt-free by using wholesome ingredients. We’ll talk about how to create holiday fare that’s not only tasty, but easy — no slaving over a hot stove for hours or days! The author of Vegan Holiday Kitchen will demonstrate a festive kale salad, a gorgeous dish of black rice, corn, and cranberries that’s perfect for potlucks, and dairy-free smoky cheddar “cheez,” an irresistible appetizer.

Nava will also talk about stress-free planning for holiday gatherings, time-saving tips, dishes for sharing, and dealing with dietary restrictions (your own or your guests). With Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, and the New Year around the corner, this program will give you plenty of tasty ideas that will make your holiday season happier and healthier.

When the Butterfles Came by Kimberley Griffiths Little

Eighth grader, Chloe Kirgan, and her mother will facilitate a peer-led mother-daughter book discussion of one of Chloe’s special book selections. 12-year-old Tara Doucet is coping with the death of her beloved grandmother and her mother's subsequent depression. When mysterious butterflies begin to arrive shortly after Grammy Claire's funeral, and a strange butler shows up to take Tara and her sister to Grammy Claire's house, Tara just knows Grammy Claire has left her a final mystery to solve. A stack of keys, notes from the beyond, and an ominous secret allow Tara to come to terms with her grandmother's death, the complexities of her family, and the powers of love and redemption.

The evening will begin with a pizza dinner (pizza, salad, beverages and dessert provided by the Library). The author will join us via Skype at 6:45! Join Chloe and her mother for an exciting evening of food and discussion. The author will join us via Skype at 6:45! For girls grades 4-8 with mother, grandmother, aunt or caregiver. The nonfiction book discussion group meets at 1pm and 7pm, the second Monday, every other month, to discuss a thought-provoking nonfiction book about about history, politics, contemporary issues, etc.

In Killers of the Flower Moon, David Grann revisits a shocking series of crimes in which dozens of people were murdered in cold blood. Based on years of research and startling new evidence, the book is a masterpiece of narrative nonfiction, as each step in the investigation reveals a series of sinister secrets and reversals. But more than that, it is a searing indictment of the callousness and prejudice toward American Indians that allowed the murderers to operate with impunity for so long. Killers of the Flower Moon is utterly compelling, but also emotionally devastating.

Please register at the Information Desk.

Books will be available for purchase ($5). Library copies will also be available for checkout and all titles are available on our Book Discussion Kindle and Overdrive.

The nonfiction book discussion group meets at 1pm and 7pm, the second Monday, every other month, to discuss a thought-provoking nonfiction book about about history, politics, contemporary issues, etc.

At stake is nothing less than who we are, and what we will become. There have been monopolists in the past but today's corporate giants have far more nefarious aims. They’re monopolists who want access to every facet of our identities and influence over every corner of our decision-making. Until now few have grasped the sheer scale of the threat. Foer explains not just the looming existential crisis but the imperative of resistance.

In 1955, white men in the Mississippi Delta lynched a fourteen-year-old from Chicago named Emmett Till. His murder was part of a wave of white terrorism in the wake of the 1954 Supreme Court decision that declared public school segregation unconstitutional. Only weeks later, Rosa Parks thought about young Emmett as she refused to move to the back of a city bus in Montgomery, Alabama. Five years later, Black students who called themselves “the Emmett Till generation” launched sit-in campaigns that turned the struggle for civil rights into a mass movement. Till’s lynching became the most notorious hate crime in American history.
