The Museum of Extraordinary ThingsMesmerizing and illuminating, Alice HoffmanThe Museum of Extraordinary Things is the story of an electric and impassioned love between two vastly different souls in New York during the volatile first decades of the twentieth century. Coralie Sardie is the daughter of the sinister impresario behind The Museum of Extraordinary Things, a Coney Island boardwalk freak show that thrills the masses. An exceptional swimmer, Coralie appears as theMermaid in her fathers zmuseum,y alongside performers like the Wolfman, the Butterfly Girl, and a one-hundred-year-old turtle. One night Coralie stumbles upon a striking young man taking pictures of moonlit trees in the woods off the Hudson River. The dashing photographer is Eddie Cohen, a Russian immigrant who has run away from his fathers Lower East Side Orthodox community and his job as a tailors apprentice. When Eddie photographs thedevastation on the streets of New York following the infamous Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, he becomes embroiled in the suspicious mystery behind a young womans disappearance and ignites the heart of Coralie. With its colorful crowds of bootleggers, heiresses, thugs, and idealists, New York itself becomes a riveting character as Hoffman weaves her trademark magic, romance, and masterful storytelling to unite Coralie and Eddie in a sizzling, tender, and moving story of young love in tumultuous times. The Museum of Extraordinary Things is Alice Hoffman at her most spellbinding.

Captain Awesome Takes a Dive (“Captain Awesome” series) by Stan Kirby and George O’Connor

School’s out for summer and Eugene McGillicuddy heads to the Sunnyview Community Center pool for swimming lessons. Eugene must bring out his superhero alter ego Captain Awesome to defend his swimming class from a cast of comical “bad guys” and to confront the “Blobby Blob-Blob” at the deep end of the pool.

Join us for a fun evening of book-related discussion and activities. The library will be closed except for the book discussion participants and their families. Register at the information desk and pick up a copy of the book. We will be starting earlier at 5:30; pizza and other refreshments will be served for dinner. Dinner will be served at 5:30 and the discussion with activities will begin at 6:00.

If you or someone you know is experiencing memory loss or behavioral changes, it’s time to learn the facts. Early detection is the key to improve quality of life for anyone affected by memory impairment. This interactive workshop will present the 10 warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease where myth will be separated from fact and commonly held fears about the disease will be addressed. Hear from people who have the disease and find out how to recognize the signs in yourself and others. Please register.

In honor of the VPL’s first hundred years of life, a new poetry group is forming at the library.  We will discuss individual poems authored by either the member or someone the member has interest in.  Members may bring poems, brief articles, memoirs or quotes concerning poetry.  Members may come empty-handed, but with a head full of perspectives and ideas.  The group will be as informal as possible, as long as the subject for discussion is connected to poetry.  Meeting times are the second and fourth Thursday of every month from 6:30 to 9 in the evening.  Anything is possible, as Yentl and Avigdor said.
