If you or someone you know is experiencing memory loss or behavioral changes, it’s time to learn the facts. Early detection is the key to improve quality of life for anyone affected by memory impairment. This interactive workshop will present the 10 warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease where myth will be separated from fact and commonly held fears about the disease will be addressed. Hear from people who have the disease and find out how to recognize the signs in yourself and others. Please register.

El Deafo by Cece Bell

Going to school and making new friends can be tough. What about going to school and making new friends while wearing a bulky hearing aid strapped to your chest? That requires superpowers! In this funny, poignant graphic novel memoir, author/illustrator Cece Bell chronicles her hearing loss at a young age.  Because the author/illustrator is a deaf person and cannot visit us via Skype, she has agreed to take e-mail questions, which she will answer in time for the discussion.  Bring a potluck dish to share. Beverages and dessert provided. (Grades 4-7 with a caregiver. Please register and pick up a book at the Information Desk.)

Join us on the lawn for an evening of beautiful folk music. After more than a decade of world-wide touring and three album releases, Rebecca Hall and Ken Anderson, otherwise known as the folk duo Hungrytown, have earned a reputation for the quality and authenticity of their songwriting. Lyricist Rebecca Hall is credited with compositions “that sound as timeless as any traditional songs” (“Northern Sky,” UK) while producer/multi-instrumentalist/husband Ken Anderson is lauded for his “remarkable affinity for instrumental embellishment” (“No Depression”) and for crafting Hungrytown’s “gorgeous vocal harmonies” (“Folk and Roots,” UK). For more information about Hungrytown, visit their web site at http://hungrytown.net/index/ .

There will be chairs set up outside, but feel free to bring your own chair or a blanket. If it rains, the concert will be held indoors.

What steps do you need to take to keep yourself safe in a relationship and in life?  Diane Blinn, Licensed Clinical Social Worker and specialist in adolescent behavior and development, will lead an interactive, hands-on workshop for teens and their parents, to answer some of these questions.  The school social worker at the Clayton A. Bouton High School, Mariel Chu, will help to facilitate the workshop.  Karen Draper, a sexual assault educator, will be part of this panel as well.  A local police officer will discuss the importance of keeping safe, which is especially vital for teens heading off to college. In honor of the VPL’s first hundred years of life, a new poetry group is forming at the library.  We will discuss individual poems authored by either the member or someone the member has interest in.  Members may bring poems, brief articles, memoirs or quotes concerning poetry.  Members may come empty-handed, but with a head full of perspectives and ideas.  The group will be as informal as possible, as long as the subject for discussion is connected to poetry.  Meeting times are the second and fourth Thursday of every month from 6:30 to 9 in the evening.  Anything is possible, as Yentl and Avigdor said.
