    Contact: Kathleen Tyrrell   765-2791

After the Revolutionary War thousands of acres on both sides of the Hudson River, owned by the Dutch Van Rensselaer's, was divided into 120 acre plots, and given free of charge to anyone who wanted to clear it and farm it for seven years. At the end of the seven years the farmers had to go to the Van Rensselaer's for a "durable lease", and found themselves bound to the landlord as tenants with annual rent and no ownership rights.  The story of the Anti-Rent Rebellion tells of the courage of thousands of farmers who tried to change the feudal rent system politically and by resistance for nearly thirty years. We will talk about the story, sing a couple songs, and open the floor to discussion.

Meet the Author
The library is proud to welcome former U.S. Army Captain and New York Times bestselling author Luis Carlos Montalván and "Tuesday," his Golden Retriever and service dog. Capt. Montalván and Tuesday will visit the library on Friday, November 7, at 6:30 p.m. What a terrific way to commemorate Veteran's Day! Luis Carlos Montalván, a 17-year Army veteran recovering from physical wounds and post-traumatic stress disorder, helps other veterans do the same. He will discuss his bestselling memoir, Until Tuesday, and share the story of how together, he and Tuesday began the healing process. The book also brings to light the challenges veterans and all people with visible and invisible disabilities find difficult to talk about. Copies of Until Tuesday and Tuesday Tucks Me In will be on sale for signing at the program. Appropriate for ages 11 and up.

This program is sponsored by the generous support of the Friends of the Library and New Scotland Kiwanis.

If this date is not convenient, Luis Carlos Montalvan will also be at the Schenectady Public LIbrary on November 5 at 4 pm to talk about "Tuesday Tucks Me In" and November 6 at 6:30 to speak about "Until Tuesday: A Wounded Warrior and the Golden Retriever Who Saved Him".

A Universe from Nothing: Why There is Something rather than Nothing by Lawrence M. Krauss

Theoretical physicist Krauss, author of several books about physics, admits up front that he is not “sympathetic to the conviction that creation requires a creator.” The book isn’t exclusively an argument against divine creation, or intelligent design, but rather, an exploration of a tantalizing question: How and why can something — the universe in which we live, for example—spring from nothing? "Authoritatively presents the most recent evidence that explains how our universe evolved and the implications for how it's going to end"--Provided by publisher.

February Friend (“Calendar Mysteries” series) by Ron Roy

It's a Valentine's Party and Bradley is passing out and collecting his class's valentines. One of them has no name on it, but the card inside tells the class to look in the closet. When the kids open the closet door, they find a rabbit named Douglas in a cage! Who left Douglas there and why? The bunny gets sick and Bradley, along with his mystery-solving buddies, must track down Douglas's owner.

Join us for a fun evening of book-related discussion and activities. The library will be closed except for the book discussion participants and their families. Register at the information desk and pick up a copy of the book.
