    Contact: Gail Brown   765-2791

Everyone is welcome to this special free screening and lecture given by historical expert Dr. Clifford Brown, Professor of Political Science at Union College.

Based on the 19th century slave narrative by Solomon Northup, 2014 Academy Award Winner 12 Years a Slave captured the hearts and minds of audiences from around the world. This true story of survival is about a free black man named Solomon Northup from Saratoga Springs, NY, who is abducted and sold into slavery. Facing cruelty at the hands of a malevolent slave owner as well as unexpected kindnesses, Northup struggles not only to stay alive, but also to retain his dignity and manhood. His journey is a powerful testament to perseverance and hope in the face of incredible adversity.

After the movie, Dr. Clifford Brown will lecture on the life of Solomon Northup, his ties to the local area, and provide details of Northup’s life after he regained his freedom. There will also be a question and answer session. Dr. Brown, along with David A. Fiske and Rachel Seligman, recently published the best current Northup biography available titled Solomon Northup: The Complete Story of the Author of Twelve Years a Slave.

Refreshments served during the break.

The movie and lecture are part of a collaborative educational experience for Clayton A. Bouton High School students and will enhance required summer reading.

No Dogs Allowed (“Ready, Set, Dogs!” series) by Stephanie Calmenson & Joanna Cole

Kate and Lucie are best friends. Kate is neat and Lucie is messy, but both girls love dogs! Unfortunately, Kate and Lucie live in apartments where dogs are not allowed. Instead of real dogs, they have all sorts of dog items, yet nothing is quite the same as having a real dog. One day, the girls discover sparkly pink dog necklaces at the thrift store and try them on -- there is a pop and a whoosh and the girls are turned into dogs! Kate and Lucie won’t need their own pet dogs, because they’ll be having furry adventures of their own!

Join us for a fun evening of book-related discussion and activities. The library will be closed except for the book discussion participants and their families. Register at the information desk and pick up a copy of the book.
