Gossamer

by Lois Lowry

Book cover Littlest One is an invisible spirit who is in training to be a dream-giver, blending pieces of happy memories with details of daily life for people as they sleep. She helps a suffering foster child at night, bestowing healing memories in his dreams. The foster child’s dreams become a battleground between good and evil as Littlest One fights the sinister Hordes that torment him with nightmares. This is a beautifully written story with a profound message about how the ordinary and simple things in life can have an extraordinary affect on one’s perspective.

Join us for an evening of book-related discussion, activities, and refreshments. Parents are welcome. Register at the reference desk and pick up a copy of the book. The library will be closed except for the book discussion participants and their families.

Land of Marvels by Barry Unsworth

March 1914. The world is running out of time as war between Britain and Germany seems inevitable. John Somerville is running out of time and the funds he needs to complete his archaeological excavation of Tell Erdeck in Mesopotamia, graveyard of empires. Somerville is cautiously elated when his workers uncover artifacts hinting that the site may be more important than even he believed. His appeal for assistance to the British ambassador in Constantinople is complicated by the fact that geologists, suspecting the presence of oil deposits, are surveying the area near the Tell. To add to his worries, the Arab man he has hired as a spy informs him that a railway line being built by German engineers will cut right through his site.

Join this discussion by registering and picking up a copy of the book at the reference desk. For more information visit the Reading Cafe website.

The Way of the World by Ron Suskind

Ibrahim, an Afghani high school student in the U.S. on an exchange program, is puzzled and alarmed by many aspects of American life. Why do some American women wear so few clothes? How can men and women who aren’t related talk with each other in public? - Usman, a native of Pakistan, works in Washington, D.C. One day, walking past the White House, he’s detained and interrogated by the Secret Service. - Abdul al-Ghizzawi, a prisoner at Guantanamo, is sick. His American lawyer is trying to get medical treatment for him, to no avail. Suskind profiles these three Muslim men against the backdrop of political events in this fascinating look at the post 9/11 world.

Welcome to the Bed and Biscuit – Joan Carris There's a full house at Dr. Grandpa Bender's Bed and Biscuit, where the veterinarian boards animals. Besides the guests, Grandpa has cows and chickens, but his inside animals are his family and help him with his day-to-day chores. Dr. Bender returns to the Bed and Biscuit after a fire with a small something that seems to occupy all his attention. The animals feel jealous and slighted and wonder if Grandpa is beginning to love them less. This is a small, remarkably sweet book with amusing illustrations, gentle humor, and a nice message. Animal lovers will be especially pleased! Sign up and pick up a copy of the book. Join us for an evening of book-related discussion, activities and refreshments. Parents are welcome. The library will be closed except for the program.

½ day at the elementary school Children may bring their lunch No Talking – Andrew Clements The fifth-grade girls and boys at Laketon Elementary don't get along very well. But the real problem is that these kids are loud and disorderly and the principal uses her red plastic bullhorn far too much! One day, Dave Packer, a certified loudmouth, bumps into an idea that makes him try to keep quiet for a whole day. But what does Dave hear during lunch? A loudmouth girl, Lynsey Burgess, is jabbering away. Dave breaks his silence and flings an insult, which leads to challenging words about who's the biggest loudmouth in school. These words spark a contest: Which team can say the fewest words during two whole days during a “no talking” contest? And it's the boys against the girls! Sign up and pick up a copy of the book. Join us for an afternoon of book-related discussion, activities and refreshments. Parents are welcome.

Nimblefingers is the place for those interested in sharing their excitement for the needle arts!

These friendly ladies (men are welcome, but we haven't seen any yet!) knit and crochet, embroider and quilt, and explore more unusual areas of needlework. You can learn a new skill here or or share your own special talents with others.

Extra events are scheduled such as workshops and lectures, an annual display of their work, and occasionally a party!
Bring your project and join them any Tuesday afternoon to socialize and to share your interests over tea and crumpets.
Newcomers are always welcome.
