“Ramblin’ Richard” presents a program of songs and stories relating to John Steinbeck's novel “The Grapes of Wrath,” this year's NEA Big Read and representing the era of the Dust Bowl and the economic depression of the 1930s.

The program includes the “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” the song that spawned the title of Steinbeck’s book.  Other songs in the program include “Tom Joad,” and other tunes mentioned in the book and from those times, such as “So Long it’s Been Good to Know You,” written as the worst of all the dust storms swept through the Southern Plains in 1935, and “Do Re Mi” that expresses the plight of the “Okies” who traveled west looking for a better life- families just like the Joads.  Richard sings the songs, accompanying himself on guitar, banjo and baritone ukulele, and tells their stories, explaining how they are tied to and represent the book and the times.

The NEA Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest, Fireseed Alliance, Crotched Mountain, NH Humanities and the Souhegan Valley Chamber of Commerce.

This event will be held at the Milford Town Hall Banquet Room. Use the entrance on Middle Street and take the elevator to the 3rd floor.

Our selection this month is The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck in celebration of the NEA BIG READ.

First published in 1939, Steinbeck’s Pulitzer Prize-winning epic of the Great Depression chronicles the Dust Bowl migration of the 1930s and tells the story of one Oklahoma farm family, the Joads, driven from their homestead and forced to travel west to the promised land of California. Out of their trials and their repeated collisions against the hard realities of an America divided into Haves and Have-Nots evolves a drama that is intensely human yet majestic in its scale and moral vision, elemental yet plainspoken, tragic but ultimately stirring in its human dignity.

This reading discussion is part of the NEA Big Read, a program of the National Endowment For The Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest, and sponsored by Fireseed Alliance, the New Hampshire Humanities, Crotched Mountain and the Souhegan Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Read to a DOG? Not just any dog....

Certified Therapy Pets are a wonderful way to encourage reluctant readers and children having difficulties with reading to become more confident in their ability to read. The use of Therapy Pets in hospitals, rehabilitation centers and nursing homes has been shown to decrease anxiety, lower blood pressure and promote relaxation; the same premise applies to children with reading difficulties.

For those children who cannot yet read on their own, parents & caregivers are invited to read with their children.

No registration necessary.

Check our online calendar for upcoming dates & times.

Dana and Susan Robinson are two guitar-playing, banjo-frailing, fiddle-sawing, and harmony-singing interpreters of the American experience. Their unique blend of contemporary songwriting and traditional Appalachian music bring to their performances a deep understanding of Americas musical heritage.

The genius of a Dana and Susan Robinson performance lies in their ability to capture the imagination of their audience, evoking a transformative experience that touches on the deepest humanity. They can make the audience howl with laughter or hush with poignant reflection as they take them on a journey across America and convey the mystery and wonder of the places they visit.

Doors Open @ 7 PM ~ Performance @ 7:30 PM

The Acoustic Café showcases regional acoustic musicians and is generously sponsored by the Wadleigh Library Trustees and Friends of the Library.  Free and open to all, it is held the 3rd Saturday from October thru April.  All proceeds from coffee and refreshment sales benefit the café and the library.

Book clubs are a fun way to have your children form new friendships while engaging in activities that are geared to promote a love of reading.  What's more, membership in a book group can help children stay motivated to read if they otherwise have difficulty picking a book and sticking with it.

Tonight we will be discussing Captain Awesome to the Rescue by Stan Kirby.

This group is for students in grades 2 and 3 only.  Registration is required.

Our selection this month is Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee

"Maycomb, Alabama. Twenty-six-year-old Jean Louise Finch -- "Scout" -- returns home from New York City to visit her aging father, Atticus. Set against the backdrop of the civil rights tensions and political turmoil that were transforming the South, Jean Louise's homecoming turns bittersweet when she learns disturbing truths about her close-knit family, the town and the people dearest to her. Memories from her childhood flood back, and her values and assumptions are thrown into doubt. Featuring many of the iconic characters from To Kill a Mockingbird, Go Set a Watchman perfectly captures  a young woman, and a world, in a painful yet necessary transition out of the illusions of the past -- a journey that can be guided only by one's conscience."--Book jacket.

Copies are available at the Main Desk. Newcomers welcome.

We all think we know the story of Benedict Arnold, the American Revolutionary War general who fought for the Continental Army but then defected to the British. Recalled mainly as a traitor for his 1780 defection, Arnold had risked his life and fortune for American freedom in courageous exploits between 1775 and 1778, when the dream of independence was at its most fragile.

George Morrison earned a BA in History at UNH. He served for twenty-seven years as a high school teacher. A long-time researcher of unpublished primary sources, Morrison has contributed to the work of numerous aviation historians and artists in several countries.

Our selection this month is Isaac’s Storm: a Man, A Time and the Deadliest Hurricane in History by Erik Larson

At the dawn of the twentieth century, a great confidence suffused America. Isaac Cline was one of the era's new men, a scientist who believed he knew all there was to know about the motion of clouds and the behavior of storms. The idea that a hurricane could damage the city of Galveston, Texas, where he was based, was to himpreposterous, "an absurd delusion." It was 1900, a year when America felt bigger and stronger than ever before.Nothing in nature could hobble the gleaming city of Galveston, then a magical place that seemed destined to become the New York of the Gulf.

Copies are available at the Main Desk. Newcomers always welcome.

misc_none 7:30 PM  -  9:30 PM Acoustic Cafe presents Decatur Creek Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Decatur Creek defined: (De-ka'-tur Creek) prop. n. A stream flowing through the scenic country hills by county road 39 near Cooperstown, Otsego County, New York where an impressionable youth once lived and never forgot. (reference - "The Hick In Me" by Doug Farrell). Colloquial - an enjoyable acoustic musical experience where the simplicity of the past meets the complexity of the present.

Jack Carlton, Steve Dionne, and Doug Farrell are each accomplished NH musicians, singer/songwriters, and performers who together are - Decatur Creek.  They met as solo performers through local NH coffeehouses and open mikes, attracted by each others songwriting and musicianship.  From their very first practice and first performance together soon after at the Warner Area Farmer's Market in 2012, they realized there was musical chemistry that compelled further exploration.  Their diverse styles, backgrounds, and skills complement one another and the group's evolving original acoustic sound will bring a smile to your face, rhythm to your feet, and leave you wanting for more.

Doug and Steve handle most lead vocals, rhythm and lead guitar, with increasing forays on mandolin, harmonica, and percussion.  Jack mans the bass, most harmony vocals, some rhythm and lead guitar, plus turns on dobro, electric lap steel, and high-string guitar.  Veteran songwriters Doug and Steve have created most of the band's primarily original repertoire with Jack contributing the rest.  Their influences run from roots to Americana, country, singer/songwriter, folk, blues, and rock; always with the focus on the songs, lyrics, and vocals.  They perform throughout southern and central NH at coffeehouses, listening rooms, farmers markets, restaurants, festivals, and community events, and have been featured on several NH radio stations including WSCS New London, WNHN Concord, WEVO Concord, and WSCA Portsmouth.  Their self-titled recording of all original tunes released in June 2015, with a spectrum of songwriting contributions from across the band, will be available at the show.  This 11-song debut features the crafted lyrics, heartfelt vocals, strong harmonies, and instrumental prowess of this emerging acoustic band and has received airplay on traditional and internet radio.

No registration required.

misc_none 7:30 PM  -  9:30 PM Acoustic Cafe presents Ari & Mia Friedman Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

“Strikingly beautiful, distinctive and exhilarating, with expressive vocals that will find a way into hearts and minds” (No Depression), Ari & Mia reference the traditions of Southern and Northeastern fiddle music and the early American songbook to create a realm where their own compositions cross paths with older traditions. Their stylish and sophisticated music honors the sounds of Appalachian cottages, rural dance floors, and urban concert halls. Combine this with their innovative approach to songwriting and the result is a captivating sound.

“Ari & Mia are not creating a new music; they are taking it to another level and exploring areas that have not been attempted in decades. Their all-acoustic, pure and honest approach has significance. Treading the edges of traditional folk in a more faithful manner, they share the lyrical wizardry of 70’s bands Steely-Eye Span, Tir-na-Nog, and the Incredible String Band, with searing harmony as good as The Beach Boys. The sisters sing in unison like two violins,” continues No Depression on the review of their most recent release, Out of Stone.

Both sisters studied at New England Conservatory in its cutting edge Contemporary Improvisation department and have toured all around the U.S and Australia. Their two previous albums, Land on Shore, and Unruly Heart, ranked high on the national folk radio charts and Mia’s song “Across the Water,” won the 2010 John Lennon Songwriting Contest in the folk category.

misc_none 7:30 PM  -  9:30 PM Acoustic Cafe presents Kenn Morr Band Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

The Kenn Morr Band is touring in support the double-disc set “Afterimage” featuring fresh acoustic interpretations of material from eight previous releases.

Kenn left his native Long Island and found in Connecticut a home, and the band that brings his music to life: Percussionist Bob Gaspar, violin virtuoso and multi-instrumentalist Tom Hagymasi and melodic bassist Pat Ryan. The KMB is known for vocal harmonies and fiery instrumental interplay. They’ve played gigs of every stripe sharing the stage with John Sebastian, Al Kooper, Eric Burdon, and John Wesley Harding.

Morr was inspired by Gordon Lightfoot, Simon and Garfunkel, Graham Nash, and Jackson Browne. He’s got a rich baritone and the kind of humor and charisma that enthralls audiences of all sizes, from coffeehouses to stages as demanding as the famed Bitter End in New York City and the International Festival of Arts and Ideas in New Haven.

With airplay across the country and Europe (England, Italy, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, among other countries), “Afterimage” is set to bring the Kenn Morr sound to new listeners.
