misc_none 7:00 PM  -  9:00 PM Acoustic Cafe presents Folksoul Duo Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Fred Simmons and Leslie Vogel began playing music together way back when they attended Bard College. Their musical partnership has endured as well as their marriage, and has produced a steady stream of music via various projects, including but not limited to the two main musical groups that go under the heading of Folksoul Music.

After years of performance the pair is also enjoying playing together just as a duo, drawing on a large repertoire of material of all kinds, spanning folk, oldies, originals, and songs that might not fit into a band set. Blending the trombone with piano, and guitar with accordion, there is plenty of variety and plenty of good rhythms.

In addition, a new project has recently begun, adding daughter Rebecca on fiddle and vocals, and Dan Wheeler on stand-up bass, and for want of a better name, is being called the Folksoul Ensemble. This gives us the freedom to play songs that don’t require drums, and to play for occasions where a lighter sound is wanted.

Doors Open @ 6:30 PM ~ Performance @ 7 PM ~ Admission is Free!

The Acoustic Café is a library-sponsored program showcasing regional acoustic musicians. Open to the public, it is held the 3rd Saturday from October thru April.

The Acoustic Café is also supported by the Friends of the Library. All proceeds from coffee and refreshment sales benefit the café and the library.

    Contact: Doug Wright   262-3511   dwright@wrightchoicefg.com

In the last seven years, Doug Wright has noticed a dramatic increase in people asking him when they should take Social Security. The decisions are more complex than you might think and will have an impact over what you will receive for the rest of your life. There are 2,728 rules and 567 ways to claim benefits. The wrong decision can cost you $100,000 or more in lost Social Security benefits. Come hear Doug Wright speak about Social Security and learn how to make the most of your Social Security benefits. There have been over 100 changes to Social Security and more dramatic changes are proposed.

Doug Wright has been helping folks prepare for retirement for over 14 years.  He is a Fiduciary and holds the designation of Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor.  He specializes in educating people on Social Security and to understand all the filing strategies.  Social Security is a fantastic government program but there are over 2,728 rules and 567 ways to file.  Social Security is now more complex than the IRS tax code.  Filing at the wrong time can cost some families tens of thousands of lost benefit dollars.  Doug speaks throughout New Hampshire on social security and other retirement concerns.  He offers a no-cost or obligation workshop to learn more.

misc_none 2:00 PM  -  3:30 PM Laser Therapy, Heat Therapy, and Oxygen Therapy Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
Contact: Dr. Deborah Bonfanti   603-554-1880   drdbonfanti@gmail.com

Hyperbaric chamber oxygen therapy offers hope and healing potential, helping the body to overcome illness, including autoimmune disease. Additionally, oxygen therapy has been touted as an effective means of reversing the process of aging. Clinically, it delivers oxygen to the tissues that may otherwise be compromised in certain states. As a result, the body is more easily able to oxygenate its cells, and this is what provides the cosmetic advantage in terms of more revitalized, smoother, less aged skin.

Other therapies, just as effective in their means, include Cold Laser Therapy and Heat Therapy. Thousands of studies have shown these therapies highly effective in a myriad of both acute and chronic pain and health conditions, including Lyme disease and Cancer.

Learning to write is one of the most important skills a child can learn!  Children have a natural enthusiasm for writing—as a way to express themselves. We will be working cooperatively on most projects with a lot of positive reinforcement.  The focus will be on creativity and not necessarily the mechanics of writing.

Read to a DOG? Not just any dog....

Certified Therapy Pets are a wonderful way to encourage reluctant readers and children having difficulties with reading to become more confident in their ability to read. The use of Therapy Pets in hospitals, rehabilitation centers and nursing homes has been shown to decrease anxiety, lower blood pressure and promote relaxation; the same premise applies to children with reading difficulties.

For those children who cannot yet read on their own, parents & caregivers are invited to read with their children.

Check our online calendar for upcoming dates & times.

misc_none 7:00 PM  -  9:00 PM Acoustic Cafe presents Low Lily Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Hailing from Vermont, LOW LILY explores the roots and branches of American folk music, creating a unique brand of acoustic music that is rooted yet contemporary. Low Lily– Liz Simmons (vocals, guitar) Flynn Cohen (vocals, guitar, mandolin) and Lissa Schneckenburger (vocals, fiddle)– are masterful players, composers and arrangers with deep relationships to traditional music styles ranging from bluegrass to Irish, Scottish, New England and Old Time Appalachian sounds. Raised in Greenfield, NH, Liz developed a unique vocal, guitar and songwriting style that draws from her childhood raised by folk musicians, and her studies in the folk and ballad traditions of Ireland, Scotland, England and America as well as contemporary folk music. She has toured with Livingston Taylor, 3X Grammy winner Tom Chapin, and Lucy Wainwright Roche, to name a few. Flynn, an Ohio native, holds a degree in Composition from Dartington College (Devon) and an MA from Mills College (CA), and has toured worldwide with numerous notable acts in traditional and contemporary acoustic music, including John Whelan, Cathy Ryan and Ruth Moody. Lissa grew up in Maine as an active member of the folk community, graduated from The New England Conservatory of Music and has performed internationally as a solo artist and with Solas and Childsplay, among others. Together as Low Lily, these still relatively young but well-seasoned musicians bring their considerable strengths, experience and history together to create an undeniably rich and versatile musical palette.

Low Lily was recently voted #1 Most Wanted at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival (NY), they have had two #1 songs on international folk radio, and have been nominated for two New England Music Awards.

Why are we so fascinated with stone walls? Kevin Gardner, author of The Granite Kiss, explains how and why New England came to acquire its thousands of miles of stone walls, the ways in which they and other dry stone structures were built, how their styles emerged and changed over time and their significance to the famous New England landscape. Along the way, Kevin occupies himself building a miniature wall or walls on a tabletop, using tiny stones from a five-gallon bucket.

Kevin Gardner is a writer, teacher, tradesman, and a lifelong resident of Hopkinton, NH. He has been a stone wall builder for forty years, and is the author of The Granite Kiss: Traditions and Techniques of Building New England Stone Walls, as well as poetry, songs, and essays.

This program is funded by a grant from the New Hampshire Humanities.

Learning to write is one of the most important skills a child can learn!  Children have a natural enthusiasm for writing—as a way to express themselves. We will be working cooperatively on most projects with a lot of positive reinforcement.  The focus will be on creativity and not necessarily the mechanics of writing.

A history of the polio epidemic that caused widespread panic in America during the early 1950s draws on the papers of Jonas Salk, Albert Sabin, Isabel Morgan, and others to capture the intense--and bitter--competition between Salk and Sabin to find the first vaccine and its implications for such issues as government testing of new drugs and manufacturers' liability.. --  Baker & Taylor

misc_none 7:00 PM  -  9:00 PM Acoustic Cafe presents Hilton Park Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

A father, a son and a family friend who started writing and performing their music together just for fun, have become the band the Boston Examiner says has “reinvented acoustic”.

Hailing from a small town in rural Southern Maine, award winning Acoustic Roots trio HILTON PARK continue to share their unique blend of timeless tales and soulful “Blood Harmony” with audiences young and old. Hilton Park is finding that in an industry where individual talent often goes unnoticed, family unity and harmony can prevail.

Hilton Park is known in the Northeastern U.S. for earthy, emotionally expressive and superbly crafted Americana, Folk & Blues. The Third Half says, “Hilton Park is about as New England as clam chowder and flour biscuits… rootsy folk that imparts an old time feel in brand new songs. A listener would undoubtedly imagine themselves comfortably on an old front porch, right next to this dynamic trio.” Two albums and 3 New England Music Award nominations later (including the win in 2015 for “Best in State: Maine”), Hilton Park continues to weave stories into instantly classic melodies and lyrics that are as unforgettable as the ‘stick in your head’ songs from the peak era of beloved songwriters like Crosby, Stills & Nash and The Band, but with modern insight for today’s audience. Every song tells a story, and there’s a story behind every song.

No registration required.

Learning to write is one of the most important skills a child can learn!  Children have a natural enthusiasm for writing—as a way to express themselves. We will be working cooperatively on most projects with a lot of positive reinforcement.  The focus will be on creativity and not necessarily the mechanics of writing.

    Contact: Maria Sanders   832-260-1942   masanders1@plymouth.edu

The ancient Greek philosophers defined eudaimonia as living a full and excellent life. In this illustrated talk, Maria Sanders explores how ideas of happiness have changed in Western civilization through the ages, while comparing and contrasting major concepts of well-being throughout the world. Can money buy happiness? To what extent does engaging in one’s community impact happiness? When worldwide surveys of happiness are conducted, why doesn’t the United States make the top ten? Participants will be invited to discuss various definitions, current measures for assessing self-reported levels of happiness, specific findings reported as increasing people’s levels of happiness, and happiness projects undertaken by entire communities —including a town-wide happiness quest in Plymouth, New Hampshire.

Our selection this month is Behold the Dreamers by Imbolo Mbue.

“In the fall of 2007, Jende Jonga, a Cameroonian immigrant living in Harlem, lands a job as a chauffeur for Clark Edwards, a senior executive at Lehman Brothers. Their situation only improves when Jende's wife Neni is hired as household help. But in the course of their work, Jende and Neni begin to witness infidelities, skirmishes, and family secrets. Then, with the 2008 collapse of Lehman Brothers, a tragedy changes all four lives forever, and the Jongas must decide whether to continue fighting to stay in a recession-ravaged America or give up and return home to Cameroon.”

Our seleection this month is Rabble in Arms by Kenneth Roberts.

The second of Roberts's epic novels of the American Revolution, Rabble in Arms was hailed by one critic as the greatest historical novel written about America upon its publication in 1933. Love, treachery, ambition, and idealism motivate an unforgettable cast of characters in a magnificent novel renowned not only for the beauty and horror of its story but also for its historical accuracy. -- NBN

Our selection this month is The Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles.

“On 21 June 1922 Count Alexander Rostov - recipient of the Order of Saint Andrew, member of the Jockey Club, Master of the Hunt - is escorted out of the Kremlin, across Red Square and through the elegant revolving doors of the Hotel Metropol. But instead of being taken to his usual suite, he is led to an attic room with a window the size of a chessboard. Deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, the Count has been sentenced to house arrest indefinitely.”   Publisher Description

Are you looking for other yarn addicts? Look no further! Don't have a project in mind? Can't seem to finish that scarf for Grandma? Or are you a complete beginner with an itch to stitch? Bring your project in & be inspired; if you're a beginner, your local craft store can help you select a project & requisite supplies. There will be no formal instruction but 'knitwits' are a helpful bunch and love indoctrinating the uninitiated into the cult of knitting. Tea, helpful company & oodles of knitting books will be served.

Are you looking for other yarn addicts? Look no further! Join us for a drop-in stitch-fest.
