From mold-breaking saloon owners to current day cocktail mavens women have had a vital, though often overlooked, impact on the evolution of bars and cocktails. Boston and New York members of LUPEC - the Ladies United for the Preservation of Endangered Cocktails-  will present an inspiring history of ladies like Ada Coleman, former Head Bartender of the Savoy Hotel and Helen David, who opened the Brass Rail Bar in the midst of the Great Depression. The alcohol-influenced social changes that took place during Prohibition and WWII will be addressed, as well as modern-day first ladies of bartending who are innovating behind the stick today. With the spirit and wit specific to lady barkeeps, we will celebrate the women that have influenced cocktail history.

Join us for an "After-Party" at the Pasta Loft in Milford. Specialty cocktails will be served with proceeds to benefit the Wadleigh Memorial Library Building Program.

misc_vote.gif 6:00 AM  -  8:00 PM VOTE YES TO SUPPORT YOUR LIBRARY! Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Michelle Sampson     director@wadleighlibrary.org

Today's the day!  Don't forget to take time out to VOTE YES on Article #3!

EVERY VOTE COUNTS and since this is a bonded warrant article, it must receive a 60% majority.  If you want to see this project happen, it's imperative that you make the time to cast your vote.

If you are not yet registered to vote, don't worry:  you can register at the polls.  Just make sure to bring a valid photo ID and if it doesn't have your current Milford address on it, make sure to bring something that does (example:  a piece of mail addressed to you).

Voting location:  Milford Middle School, 33 Osgood Road.  Polls are open 6AM-8PM.

For more information about the building project, see http://www.wadleighlibrary.org/building

It was 20 years ago when the Library Board of Trustees first submitted a library expansion proposal to the town’s Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) Committee.   The CIP has scheduled a library project for funding 14 different times and for various reasons, 14 different times it has been postponed.  The original building is 65 years old; the addition, nearly 30 years old.  The facility is rapidly deteriorating and has increasingly expensive repair and maintenance costs.  It is the most heavily used building outside of the schools and yet it fails to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements and is 57% smaller than the average NH public library (square feet per capita).  Trustees have worked hard to come up with the most cost-effective solution to meet ever more pressing needs identified in community surveys, focus groups, a strategic planning process and a space needs analysis.  Highlights include expanded Children’s and Teen Departments; small, quiet study rooms; a larger, flexible meeting room space with after-hours use; a technology/business center; and greatly expanded parking.  This design also provides a facility which is vastly more efficient to operate, staff, secure and maintain for years to come.  It calls for an 8100 square foot addition and a rebuild of the current structure to be completed in three phases.  The library would remain open throughout construction.   Every year that passes, the cost increases.  The rate of inflation for construction is estimated to be 3%; in other words, this project will cost approximately $160,000 more if postponed to 2016.  The cost has been reduced by $500,000 in Library Trustee expenditures towards the project over the last several years; purchases include adjacent properties, furnishings, razing/landscaping, architectural and consultant services.  The total project cost is offset by a $500,000 gift from the Morris K. Webster Trust Fund.

The Library Board of Trustees supports this article 7-0.

Read to a DOG? Not just any dog....

Certified Therapy Pets are a wonderful way to encourage reluctant readers and children having difficulties with reading to become more confident in their ability to read. The use of Therapy Pets in hospitals, rehabilitation centers and nursing homes has been shown to decrease anxiety, lower blood pressure and promote relaxation; the same premise applies to children with reading difficulties.

For those children who cannot yet read on their own, parents & caregivers are invited to read with their children. In order to guarantee your spot, you must register for each session.

Registered children should arrive during the advertised time span and will read to the dog of their choice for approximately 15-20 mins.

Check our online calendar for upcoming dates & times.

To be held in the Milford High School Cafeteria

Welcome to the 1st Annual Milford Community SCRABBLE “Scrambler”.  The Milford Lions, The Friends of the Wadleigh Memorial Library and the Milford School’s Libraries are collaborating to offer a Sunday afternoon of fun for you while generating funds to support literacy efforts in OUR community.  We have set a very ambitious fundraising goal for this event but with your help, we will succeed!  Enhanced literacy skills have the potential to impact quality of life issues for individuals and families while also contributing to economic development benefits for businesses and the municipalities that we serve.

We are looking for four-person teams to register to play SCRABBLE on Sunday afternoon March 15th.  Each team is asked to raise a minimum of $100.00 in pledges to participate in the “Scrambler” There will be a prize for the team that raises the most money.  Each team will play four (4) thirty minute games.  A CHAMPIONS trophy will be presented to the team that scores the most combined point in their four games.  Additionally, we will recognize the team (NOT the CHAMPIONSHIP team) that achieves the HIGHEST SINGLE GAME score and the team (again, NOT the Championship team and NOT the team that scores the highest single game score) that plays the highest scoring SINGLE WORD.  NO team can win more than one prize for game play!

ALL registered participants will receive a 1st Annual Milford Community SCRABBLE “Scrambler” t-shirt.

Register your team TODAY!  ONLY the first forty (40) teams to submit their registration paperwork will be able to participate.

ENTRY DEADLINE IS MARCH 8, 2015.  If you are not able to play in the “Scrambler” but you would still like to donate to this worthy cause, tax-deductible donations can be made to Milford Lion’s Charities (“RAP” in the memo line please)  P.O. Box 274    Milford, NH  03055-0274

    Contact: Susan Amann   249-0645   refdesk@wadleighlibrary.org

Glenn Knoblock explores the fascinating history of New Hampshire’s beer and ale brewing industry from Colonial days, when it was home- and tavern-based, to today’s modern breweries and brew pubs. Unusual and rare photos and advertisements document this changing industry and the state’s earliest brewers, including the renowned Frank Jones. A number of lesser-known brewers and breweries that operated in the state are also discussed, including the only brewery owned and operated by a woman before the modern era. Illustrations present evidence of society’s changing attitudes towards beer and alcohol consumption over the years. Whether you’re a beer connoisseur or a “tea-totaler”, this lecture will be enjoyed by adults of all ages.

This program is funded by a grant from the New Hampshire Humanities Council.

Check our online calendar for upcoming dates & times.

misc_none 7:30 PM  -  9:00 PM Acoustic Cafe presents Off the Cuff Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Off The Cuff has been delighting audiences across southern New Hampshire and sorrounding areas for over a decade. Incorporating elements of jazz, swing, blues, bluegrass, rock, folk and world music styles, Off The Cuff infuses its own special blend of vocal and instrumental harmony into every song to reinvent it as something new and personal. Once this is done, the song is “Cuffed” – given that Off The Cuff touch.

Audiences love this music! Whether an original tune or an old standard, a pop tune or a nugget by some little known songwriter, the music touches a familiar chord in everyone, whether they grew up dancing to the big bands or to rock bands. It is music that each generation has managed to share; a part of the American musical soul. The music is upbeat, energetic and fun, and The Cuffers have a great time playing and interacting with the audience.

In October, 2008 Off The Cuff released its first CD, “Cuffed… At Last!” Recorded live at the Caleidh House in Westmoreland, NH, the CD contains 14 songs covering a broad range of styles that highlight the diversity and variety of an Off The Cuff performance.

Doors Open @ 7 PM - Performance @ 7:30PM - Admission is Free!

The Acoustic Café is a library-sponsored program showcasing regional acoustic musicians. Open to the public, it is held the 3rd Saturday from October through April in a smoke-free intimate

environment.  The Acoustic Café is also supported by the Friends of the Library.  All proceeds from coffee and refreshment sales benefit the café and the library.

NOTE: This is the last PAWS session until sachool begins again in the fall.

Dan Szczesny is a long-time journalist and author living in New Hampshire.

The Adventures of Buffalo and Tough Cookie is an exploration of one of New Hampshire’s least known mountain lists, the 52 With a View. It’s a hiking story unlike any other, as Dan takes on the task of turning a determined, urban elementary child into an experienced back-woods hiker, and in the process finds that sometimes the most important lessons are the one’s that she teaches him.

Through snow, storms, slugs and long miles over the state’s beautiful and challenging terrain, The Adventures of Buffalo and Tough Cookie is a journey and meditation on the transformative power of friendship, commitment and the meaning of family.

Are you looking for other yarn addicts? Do your Monday nights seem dull? Look no further! Join us for a drop-in stitch-fest on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month between 6:30-8:30pm. Don't have a project in mind? Can't seem to finish that scarf for Grandma? Or are you a complete beginner with an itch to stitch? Bring your project in & be inspired; if you're a beginner, your local craft store can help you select a project & requisite supplies. There will be no formal instruction but 'knitwits' are a helpful bunch and love indoctrinating the uninitiated into the cult of knitting. Tea, helpful company & oodles of knitting books will be served.
