Read to a DOG? Not just any dog....

Certified Therapy Pets are a wonderful way to encourage reluctant readers and children having difficulties with reading to become more confident in their ability to read. The use of Therapy Pets in hospitals, rehabilitation centers and nursing homes has been shown to decrease anxiety, lower blood pressure and promote relaxation; the same premise applies to children with reading difficulties.

For those children who cannot yet read on their own, parents & caregivers are invited to read with their children. In order to guarantee your spot, you must register for each session.

Registered children should arrive during the advertised time span and will read to the dog of their choice for approximately 15-20 mins.

Check our online calendar for upcoming dates & times.

    Contact: Susan Amann   249-0645   refdesk@wadleighlibrary.org

The 2016 presidential election is approaching, and New Hampshire is front and center as the home of the first-in-the-nation primary. As things begin to heat up on the national political front, Neil Levesque, Executive Director of the New Hampshire Institute of Politics, has been prominently featured in television specials and quoted in articles as an expert on the New Hampshire presidential primary. Levesque also serves as Chairman of the New Hampshire Presidential Primary Centennial Anniversary Commission which is tasked with encouraging, planning and coordinating appropriate events and activities commemorating the 100th anniversary of the New Hampshire presidential primary.  First held on March 14, 1916, laws were changed in 1949 to make the primary a way to directly select candidates rather than delegates, and thereby increase voter turnout.  In the decades since this change, the New Hampshire primary has become a cornerstone of presidential elections.  Join us for Mr. Levesque's engaging and fascinating talk on the history and significance of the NH primary and get the inside scoop on the issues and personalities in the current race for the White House.

This event will be held at the Milford Town Hall. Please use the entrance on Middle Street and take the elevator to the 3rd floor.

Shakespeare and Star Trek, Shakespeare and Schwarzenegger, Shakespeare and rap, Shakespeare and Superman. What's up with that?!

In his provocative book, Shakespeare and Modern Popular Culture, UNH Associate Professor of English Douglas Lanier explores how and why it is that Shakespeare, perhaps more than any other major literary figure, is alluded to or adapted in so many different ways in contemporary popular culture, and for so many different audiences. His book addresses the history of Shakespeare’s interaction with popular culture and examines examples from many different mass media, including film, TV, comic books, popular fiction, and music.

Prof. Douglas Lanier specializes in early British drama, particularly non-Shakespearean drama of the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods. He teaches a variety of courses in drama and theater history, Shakespeare, Renaissance literature, film, cultural studies and literary theory, and received a UNH Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2000.

Copies of his book will be available for purchase and signing.

Our selection for this month is The Day The World Came To Town: 9/11 In Gander, Newfoundland by Jim DeFede.

"For the better part of a week, nearly every man, woman, and child in Gander and the surrounding smaller towns stopped what they were doing so they could help. They placed their lives on hold for a group of strangers and asked for nothing in return. They affirmed the basic goodness of man at a time when it was easy to doubt such humanity still existed."      Amazon Editors

Tinker Tray Afternoon

This is an open ended building activity where children get to use their curiosity and creativity to make something out of everyday small objects.  Tinkering develops fine motor and manipulative skills, higher order thinking and problem solving.

Open to all ages, but parents need to be aware that there are many small parts. No registration necessary.

An atelier is a space of innovation, discovery and empathy. It provides children the opportunity to engage in long term projects, often in small groups, while exploring different types of materials and techniques. The atelier environment is a curriculum in itself, offering invitations to create, take risks and problem solve throughout the day.:

Haunted by the memory of his brothers' deaths and increasingly frustrated and isolated by his research, Bankson is on the verge of suicide when a chance encounter with colleagues, the controversial Nell Stone and her wry and mercurial Australian husband, Fen, pulls him back from the brink.”            Publisher Description

Our selection this month is:  The Worst Hard Time: the Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dust Bowl by Timothy Egan

“On April 14, 1935, the biggest dust storm on record descended over five states, from the Dakotas to Amarillo, Texas. People standing a few feet apart could not see each other; if they touched, they risked being knocked over by the static electricity that the dust created in the air. The Dust Bowl was the product of reckless, market-driven farming that had so abused the land that, when dry weather came, the wind lifted up millions of acres of topsoil and whipped it around in "black blizzards," which blew as far east as New York. This ecological disaster rapidly disfigured whole communities.” The New Yorker 2006

Are you looking for other yarn addicts? Do your Monday nights seem dull? Look no further! Join us for a drop-in stitch-fest on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month between 6:30-8:30pm. Don't have a project in mind? Can't seem to finish that scarf for Grandma? Or are you a complete beginner with an itch to stitch? Bring your project in & be inspired; if you're a beginner, your local craft store can help you select a project & requisite supplies. There will be no formal instruction but 'knitwits' are a helpful bunch and love indoctrinating the uninitiated into the cult of knitting. Tea, helpful company & oodles of knitting books will be served.
