Our selection this month is The Story of Arthur Truluv by Elizabeth Berg.

Truluv is a moving novel about three people who have lost the person they love most, and must find their way back to happiness. Arthur, a widower, meets Maddy, an angry and friendless teenage girl, while visiting his late wife at the cemetary, where he goes every day for lunch. Against all odds, the two strike up a friendship that pulls them out of a serious rut. They band together with Arthur's nosy neighbor Lucille, to create lives that are truly worth living. Europe was in turmoil in the early teens. Monarchies were flexing their muscles seeking to expand their borders, and emboldened leaders brought war to the continent. The United States declared war on Germany on April 6, 1917 and entered into the "Great War" that had begun in Europe three years earlier. Nineteen months later the war concluded with armistice signed on November 11, 1918.

"Ramblin' Richard" Kruppa is known for his well-received "World War II Songs and Stories" program here in Milford along with other music programs. In this new presentation on World War I and the music of the time he sings songs that were popular and tells interesting stories of how the songs related to the life and the times of Americans of that era. Richard plays guitar, banjo, and baritone ukele, and sings the songs related to the life and the times of Americans in that era - songs like "Alexander's ragtime band,"Over There," "For mea nd My Gal," that are still familiar today.

This program is presented at the Milford Town Hall Banquet Room. Please enter on Middle Street and take the elevator to the 3rd floor.

Our selection this month is Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult.

Ruth Jefferson is a labor and delivery nurse at a Connecticut hospital with more than twenty years' experience. During her shift, Ruth begins a routine checkup on a newborn, only to be told a few minutes later that she's been reassigned to another patient. The parents are white supremacists and don't want Ruth, who is African American, to touch their child. The hospital complies with their request, but the next day, the baby goes into cardiac distress while Ruth is alone in the nursery. Does she obey orders or does she intervene?  Publisher Description

In partnership with NHPBS, short films from Ken Burns’ and Lynn Novick’s PBS documentary The Vietname War will be presented at the Milford Town Hall Banquet Room at 6:30 pm. This 28-minute video includes war stories told by an American journalist, an anti-war activist, an American author and combat soldier, a Vietnamese author and soldier of the North Vietnamese Army, hero mothers, a South Vietnamese refugee, an ARVN officer, and several U.S. Marines.

Our discussion is facilitated by Bill Donoghue, a Vietnam combat veteran who served as a Corpsman with Marine Combined Action Platoons 1-4-5 and 2-7-0 from 1970-71. These Marine infantry squads of 10 Marines and a Corpsman lived and operated constantly in and around rural villages while training Vietnamese Popular Force/Regional Force soldiers. Immersion in Vietnamese society enabled Bill to experience war daily from a villager's view.

Please use the Milford Town Hall entrance on Middle Street and take the elevator to the 3rd floor.

This program in funded by a grant from the NH Humanities.

Our selection this month is The Aviator's Wife by Melanie Benjamin

Despite her own major achievements--she becomes the first licensed female glider pilot in the United States--Anne Morrow Lindbergh is viewed merely as Charles Lindbergh's wife. The fairy-tale life she once longed for will bring heartbreak and hardships, ultimately pushing her to reconcile her need for love and her desire for independence, and to embrace, at last, life's infinite possibilities for change and happiness. Our seleection this month is Dark Money: the Hidden History of the Billionaires Behind the Rise of the Radical Right by Jane Mayer.

Why is America living in an age of profound economic inequality? Why, despite the desperate need to address climate change, have even modest environmental efforts been defeated again and again? Why have protections for employees been decimated? Why do hedge-fund billionaires pay a far lower tax rate than middle-class workers?

Are you looking for other yarn addicts? Look no further! Join us for a drop-in stitch-fest. Don't have a project in mind? Can't seem to finish that scarf for Grandma? Or are you a complete beginner with an itch to stitch? Bring your project in & be inspired; if you're a beginner, your local craft store can help you select a project & requisite supplies. There will be no formal instruction but 'knitwits' are a helpful bunch and love indoctrinating the uninitiated into the cult of knitting. Tea, helpful company & oodles of knitting books will be served.

Free Tax help will be available at the Wadleigh Library from February 5th to April 11th. The hours will be the same each week:

Tuesdays - 9 am to 2 pm
Thursdays - 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm

Appointments are not required.

The Wadleigh Library is an official Tax Form Repository. We will provide forms as we receive them from the federal and state government. Tax forms can also be printed from the IRS website at www.irs.gov.

Since 1968, AARP Tax-Aide volunteers have helped nearly 50 million low- to middle-income taxpayers, many of whom are aged 60 or older. Tax-Aide volunteers (IRS Certified) are trained to assist with filing the 1040 Form and the more standard of the schedules, including Schedules A and B. Electronic filing (e-filing) is offered at the Wadleigh Memorial Library site, with no charge to the taxpayer. E-filing ensures more accurate tax returns and faster processing of tax refunds.
