misc_none 2:00 PM In Sisterhood: The Women's Movement in Pittsburgh Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Brandon   412-882-6622   taperb2@einetwork.net

Pittsburgh has a long history of producing entrepreneurs, philanthropists, artists, and musicians. What is less well known is that the region was also the birthplace of some influential leaders of the women’s movement and was home to several pioneering feminist organizations during the latter part of the 1900s. In Sisterhood is an oral history and multimedia project designed to promote a deeper understanding and appreciation of this inspiring aspect of the region’s history and to highlight how progress was achieved through the hard work and determination of a diverse group of local grassroots activists.

The project’s director and producer, Dr. Patricia Ulbrich, will lead a talk on the importance of our own homegrown contribution to the women’s movement, as well as why these recordings are essential to keeping that contribution alive in our memory and our history books.

Bio: Patricia Ulbrich, Ph.D., is a progressive social scientist, film student and visiting scholar in women studies at the University of Pittsburgh. For more than three decades, Dr. Ulbrich’s research has focused on women’s issues, including how individuals’ race, class and gender shape their life chances. She was active in Sociologists for Women in Society and was the recipient of their Feminist Activist Award. She co-founded the Women and Girls Foundation of Southwest Pennsylvania. She served on the board of Pittsburgh Action Against Rape. She conceptualized and directs In Sisterhood: the Women’s Movement in Pittsburgh.

The library knows how frustrating it can be to wait in line for a movie, so we’re starting a brand new club devoted to in-demand movies for the on-the-go patron.

Each meeting, we’ll vote on a different movie to watch   together on Netflix, the streaming video service that offers thousands of films with the touch of a button.  And we’ll have pizza and snacks ready for movie-time munching!

Don’t let Brandon dictate what to watch anymore.

Now you can choose your own adventure . . . or comedy or mystery or romance!    Get your Netflix fix this summer!

It's time to celebrate the fourteenth of July!

Join the library for a program that explores how the most dangerous time in America can be better understood through the power of the written word.

Imagine clearing out your family attic and discovering hundreds of letters written during the Civil War. This is exactly what happened to local professor Carleton Young.

The result of this discovery is Voices from the Attic: The Williamstown Boys in the Civil War. The book tells the story of two brothers who witnessed and made history by fighting in many important battles including Antietam, Cedar Creek, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg.

Rediscovered more than a century after being written, these letters offer a fascinating and fresh insight into the war as seen through the eyes of two young men who came of age at the same time their country almost broke apart.

Bio: Carleton Young has undergraduate degrees in economics and English from Westminster College and Point Park University, an MA in history from Ohio University, and his PhD in the history of education from the University of Pittsburgh. He has taught classes as an adjunct professor at the Community College of Allegheny County, the University of Pittsburgh, Eastern Gateway Community College, and in the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Carnegie Mellon University.

    Contact: Brandon   412-882-6622   taperb2@einetwork.net

Every Jewish child knows that all of his questions, no matter how big or small, are met with the same answer by his parents: “Just ask the rabbi.” In the spirit of this playful openness, the library wants you to join us for an informal talk with a real mensch of a man, Rabbi Charles Diamond!

What makes something kosher? Why are there so many Jewish doctors?

What the heck did Laverne and Shirley mean by “Schlemiel! Schlimazel?”

How does your hair stay so curly? Why is my husband such a klutz?

How do Jews celebrate Christmas? Do you really like eating matzoh?

He’ll answer all of your questions –and more!-- while we nosh on a bagel lunch fit for any hungry Hebrew.

You’ll have a goy old time!

Bio: Rabbi Chuck Diamond was ordained by the Jewish Theological Seminary of America in 1985. In 1991, Rabbi Diamond returned to his hometown of Pittsburgh where he became Assistant Rabbi of Education and Youth at Congregation Beth Shalom in Squirrel Hill. In 2005, Rabbi Chuck and a loyal group of followers founded Congregation Or L’Simcha. With two hundred families and having outgrown their modest, Or L’Simcha moved into the Tree of Life Synagogue.

Rabbi Chuck has also spent parts of the past 38 summers working at Camp Ramah in Canada. His passion and his abilities at working with children and people of all ages continues to guide his rabbinate.
