Join us for a special three-week seminar with Master Gardener Susan Salis during which she’ll dig up an abundance of facts on the do’s and don’ts of proper gardening and the landscaping life.

Whether you’re an old hat at horticulture or a green green-thumber, now is the time to turn your backyard into a schoolyard of great gardening knowledge!

Class One: Right Plant, Right Place, Right Soil

Beautiful, healthy gardens don’t happen by accident. We have to select plants that fit specific needs and growing conditions. This talk will cover the essential dos and don’ts of a successful ornamental garden, including types of plant material, things we need to do before and after we dig, microclimates, and common soil issues. If you’re a less-experienced gardener, or simply want a quick refresher course, this talk is for you.

Register for the class of your choice or all three.  Let’s get agri-cultured!

We're bringing Moxie back!

Join us as we welcome the tuneful twosome of Pittsburgh radio, Mike Plaskett and Dale Abraham of Rhythm Sweet and Hot, for a Friday night shindig of meals and music!

Each Saturday night on 90.5 FM, these two bring back to life the swing, jazz and big band numbers from the 1920s to the 1940s that you can’t find in the store.  And now they’re bringing that old black magic to Whitehall!

They’ll share their favorite finds from their own collections, talk about the music that made the country’s toes tap and its heart go pitter-pat, and even spin some wax to give your ears an earful!

But wait, there’s more!  Just to whet your appetite, we’ll be treated to a catered meal by Whitehall’s own Gianna Via’s.  It’ll be the bee’s knees!

Cost: $5.00 due at time of registration at the Circulation Desk

Stop by the Second Chapter Cafe and join other adults to watch a different film each week!  No registration required.

This week's selection is Big Eyes by director Tim Burton.  The film is based on the true story of Walter Keane (Christoph Waltz), who was one of the most successful painters of the 1950s and early 1960s. The artist earned staggering notoriety by revolutionizing the commercialization and accessibility of popular art with his enigmatic paintings of waifs with big eyes. The truth would eventually be discovered though: Keane's art was actually not created by him at all, but by his wife, Margaret (Amy Adams).  Big Eyes centers on Margaret's awakening as an artist, the phenomenal success of her paintings, and her tumultuous relationship with her husband, who was catapulted to international fame while taking credit for her work.

Stop by the Second Chapter Cafe and join other adults to watch a different film each week!  No registration required.

This week's selection is Wild starring Reese Witherspoon.  With the dissolution of her marriage and the death of her mother, Cheryl Strayed has lost all hope. After years of reckless, destructive behavior, she makes a rash decision: with absolutely no experience, Cheryl hikes more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail, alone. The film powerfully captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddens, strengthens, and ultimately heals her.

Run time: 115 minutes

misc_none 7:00 PM Almost Heaven: Angels in American Cemeteries Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Brandon   412-882-6622   taperb2@einetwork.net

Angels have long played an active role in perceptions of death. In American cemeteries winged skulls and cherub heads appear on early colonial gravestones, but the development of large-scale garden cemeteries in the mid-nineteenth century brought forth a multitude of full-bodied angels who weep and drop flowers over the grave, carry the soul to heaven, and comfort the bereaved.

This talk by Professor Elizabeth Roark will examine the development of angel markers in American cemeteries, focusing on both their beauty and how they vividly communicate the beliefs of the community at large.

Biographical information: Elisabeth Roark is an Associate Professor of Art at Chatham University.  A faculty member since 1996, she is responsible for coursework in Art History and Art Museum Studies in the Art, Design, and Communications Department.  Her research interests include Colonial American art, nineteenth-century American sculpture, painting, cemetery design, and cemetery sculpture.

Join us for a riveting talk and picture presentation with local historian Elizabeth Williams-Herrman, author of Pittsburgh in World War I: Arsenal of the Allies.

Through her use of homegrown archival documents and period photographs, Ms. Williams-Herrman will highlight the special contributions made by the City of Rivers that go beyond its steel and men.  Her book is a testament to a city whose diverse ethnic groups crossed political and ideological lines to come together for a common cause during a time when the world was turned against itself and bleeding from the tears.

Biographical information: Elizabeth Williams-Herrman is the college archivist at La Roche College.  She holds a master’s degree in public history from Duquesne University.  Besides Pennsylvania history, her areas of interest include twentieth-century American history, cultural history, and public history.

Join the book club devoted to turning that masterpiece into a piece of cake!

It’s easy to be intimidated by the classics, but there’s strength (and support!) in numbers and this group aims to prove it.

We’ll tackle another classic work each month to tease out its meaning and discuss whether the work "works" and if it deserves its place on history’s highest shelf.

So join now and get classy!
