    Contact: Brandon   412-882-6622   taperb2@einetwork.net

A continuing conundrum since humans began writing their thoughts down has been, “Why is there evil in the world?” and “Where does evil come from?” This topic is known by the modern name of "Theodicy,” and remains a contemporary philosophical and religious debate.  We will survey the origins of the response to these questions beginning with Hellenistic Judaism and focusing on the early Christian construction of the concept of the “Devil” as both the philosophical and religious worldview that continues to dominate our understanding of the polarity of the universe.

Our special guest speaker is Dr. Rebecca Denova of the University of Pittsburgh's Department of Religious Studies. In addition to the origins of Christianity, she teaches courses on ancient Greco-Roman religions and the religions of Ancient Egypt.  She also offers courses in Pitt’s Osher program for senior citizens and is a frequent contributor to book reviews on the history of religion for the Post-Gazette.

misc_none 7:00 PM  -  8:00 PM The Pillowcase Project Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Denise Ignasky   412-882-6622   ignaskyd@einetwork.net

The Pillowcase Project, a program sponsored by Disney, empowers children in grades 3rd through 5th to take action before and during an emergency. So, how are pillowcases related to preparedness? After Hurricane Katrina, students in makeshift communities began to decorate pillowcases to hold their belongings. The pillowcase became a symbol of resilience in the face of emergency.

The Learn, Practice, Share framework allows children to explore and talk about the environmental causes of natural hazards and the best way to prepare themselves, their families and communities for emergency situations.

Learn: Provide children with basic information about an emergency that is most likely to happen where they live and instruct them in the key protective actions.

Practice: Give children the opportunity to participate in a physical activity that reinforces what they have learned.

Share: Encourage children to share what they have learned through collaborative small group, problem solving, and discussion activities.

Each child will receive a pillowcase to personalize as well as a My Preparedness Workbook to complete with family and friends.

Free-Online registration is required. Scout troops welcome!
