This week's selection is Suffragette.  Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter, and Meryl Streep lead the cast of this powerful drama about the women who were willing to lose everything in their fight for equality. The stirring story centers on Maud (played by Carey Mulligan), a working wife and mother whose life is forever changed when she is secretly recruited to join the U.K.'s growing suffragette movement. Inspired by true events, SUFFRAGETTE is a moving drama about those who risked all they had for women's right to vote - their jobs, their homes, their children, and even their lives.

We are so excited to announce that children’s author and illustrator Will Hillenbrand will be at the Whitehall Library as part of Pennsylvania’s One Book, Every Young Child Initiative.

Kite Day is this year’s book selection for One Book, Every Young Child. Celebrating its 11th year, this is a collaborative project using the vehicle of a “One Book, One State” program to highlight the importance of early literacy development in preschoolers ages 3-6 years. In its inaugural year, the One Book, Every Young Child program won the coveted national John Cotton Dana Library Public Relations Award.
Published in 2012 by Holiday House, this story is about two friends, Mole and Bear, who decide to make a kite and find themselves on a windy-day adventure.

By making this reading a family event, parents and caregivers will not only enjoy sharing a story experience with their preschooler, but they will also have the opportunity to learn more about the One Book, Every Young Child initiative.
Studies show that activities like reading aloud and sharing books and stories are crucial to early learning. Adults must find ways to engage children in activities like talking about a book's cover and illustrations, discussing the action in the book and favorite parts, pretend play related to the book and more. Through One Book, Every Young Child, adults with preschoolers in their lives will learn how they can support the development of literacy in preschool children.

This event is free and open to the public. To learn more about the One Book, Every Young Child initiative, visit www.paonebook.org.

One Book, Every Young Child is made possible through a collaboration of the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Pennsylvania Department of Human Services, Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, Please Touch Museum, State Museum of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Library Association, Pennsylvania Center for the Book, Pennsylvania’s Promise for Children, Pennsylvania Association for the Education of Young Children and The Pennsylvania Child Care Association. This project is made possible by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services as administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Education through the Office of Commonwealth Libraries.

Join us for this special event! Each child in attendance will receive a free signed copy of the book. Activities will include crafts, snacks, and games. Registration is required. If you are interested in bringing a group or class to this event please contact Denise Ignasky (412) 882-6622 ignaskyd@einetwork.net

Pull up a chair and unfurl the bib for a morning of short fiction, savory food, and local author Sherrie Flick.  Ms. Flick, a food writer whose appetite for fiction is just as strong, will dish on her experiences as a gourmand as well as on “flash fiction” –writings so short that some are mere sentences long!

While enjoying tasty appetizers, we’ll also be treated to a reading from Sherrie’s new collection, Whiskey, Etc.  What better way to enjoy bite-sized food than with bite-sized fiction!

Bio: Sherrie Flick is a fiction writer, food writer, and freelance writer and copy editor.  Her food writing appears in Ploughshares, Pittsburgh Quarterly, The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, and NEXTPittsburgh as well as the anthology Fried Walleye and Cherry Pie: Midwestern Writers on Food.
