This week's selection is the Tom Cruise action drama, Edge of Tomorrow.  The action unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world. Major William Cage (Tom Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop-forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again...and again. But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt). And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.

Do you know the lines of your favorite movie by heart? Are you a movie buff? A film fella? A flick chick?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions —or if you’re looking for a fun way to spend a couple of hours— join this program that devotes itself to discovering new films and rediscovering older ones. Each free film screening is accompanied by refreshments as well as an optional discussion following the feature for those who wish to dish on all things movies.

This week's selection is the 1941 comedy, The Devil and Miss Jones.  John P. Merrick (Charles Coburn), the world's richest man, gets word that someone is trying to unionize a department store that he owns. To thwart this blatant act of democracy, Merrick changes his name and takes a menial job at the store, the better to catch the union activists without detection.  However, his plans didn't take into account little Miss Jones (Jean Arthur) of the Shoe Department whose warmth and good-naturedness may prove a stumbling block to his goal.

Stop by the Second Chapter Cafe and join other adults to watch a different film each week!  No registration required.

This week's selection is Million Dollar Arm starring Mad Men's Jon Hamm.  Based on a true story, the film follows JB Bernstein, a once-successful sports agent who now finds himself edged out by bigger, slicker competitors.  Late one night, while watching cricket being played in India on TV, JB comes up with an idea so radical it just might work. Why not go to there and find the next baseball pitching sensation? Setting off for Mumbai with nothing but a gifted but cantankerous scout (Alan Arkin) in tow, JB stages a televised, nationwide competition called "Million Dollar Arm" where 40,000 hopefuls compete.

Each free film screening is accompanied by refreshments as well as an optional discussion following the feature for those who wish to dish on all things movies.

This week's selection is the 1941 drama, The Devil and Daniel Webster.  Jabez Stone is a hard-working farmer trying to make an honest living, but a streak of bad luck tempts him to do the unthinkable: bargain with the Devil himself. For seven years of good fortune, Stone promises “Mr. Scratch” (Walter Huston) his soul when the contract ends. When the troubled farmer begins to realize the error of his choice, he enlists the aid of the one man who might save him: the legendary orator and politician Daniel Webster.

    Contact: Brandon   412-882-6622   taperb2@einetwork.net

As long as we’ve had the ability to make motion pictures, we’ve had audiences to scare and frighten.  Some of the earliest and most enduring movies are horror films –starring Frankenstein, Dracula, demons and devils. Beyond their ability to raise the hairs on our necks, these “scary stories” also inform us about our world and ourselves.

Come join us for this hair-raising program with nationally-recognized (and home-grown!) authority on culture and cinema, Professor Adam Lowenstein.  He will explain “why horror films matter”, provide a history of some of the most important examples, and shed some light on this right to fright!

I’d be scared if I didn’t attend!

About the speaker: Adam Lowenstein is Associate Professor of English and Film Studies at the University of Pittsburgh, where he also directs the Film Studies Program. He is the author of Shocking Representation: Historical Trauma, National Cinema, and the Modern Horror Film (Columbia University Press, 2005) as well as essays that have appeared in Cinema Journal, Representations, Film Quarterly, Critical Quarterly, boundary 2, Post Script, and numerous anthologies. He has been interviewed on issues of cinema and culture in the New York Times, the Village Voice, and in the documentary The American Nightmare. His new book, Dreaming of Cinema: Spectatorship, Surrealism, and the Age of Digital Media, is forthcoming from Columbia University Press in January 2015.

It’s easy to be intimidated by the classics, but there’s strength (and support!) in numbers and this group aims to prove it.

We’ll tackle another classic work each month to tease out its meaning and discuss whether the work "works" and if it deserves its place on history’s highest shelf.

So join now --and get classy!

Well, me neither!

We all have certain things we would like to do or try, but we don’t because we’re busy, scared, or unsure how to begin.  Since these “little things” can build up, our new club is designed to take the time to try them as a group.  We’ll make our own list and try a different one each month!

So why get cross when you can cross off?

Join the book club devoted to turning that masterpiece into a piece of cake!

---Please be sure to register online or by calling the library!---

Have you ever written a song?  Crafted a memory book?   Ever acted out a Shakespeare play?  Made a fancy dessert?

Well, me neither!

We all have certain things we would like to do or try, but we don’t because we’re busy, scared, or unsure how to begin.  Since these “little things” can build up, our new club is designed to take the time to try them as a group.  We’ll make our own list and try a different one each month!

So why get cross when you can cross off?
