From the pain of depression and the joys of mania, to the shock of the diagnosis and the life-changing 3,400-mile bicycle ride across the United States that followed, Karen Hurley shares her intriguing autobiography. Take a glimpse inside her mind as she describes her surprising reaction to the help she finally got and how she adapted to a new way of life. A compelling story that candidly reveals the thoughts and emotions of someone who suffers from bipolar disorder or depression, Pedaling out of the Dark also includes a detailed account of the cycling adventure that gave her hope and changed her life.

The Whitman Public Library is pleased to present "Stealing From the Dead - Ideas and Where We Get Them" Writers panel. This session will have the following authors:

Gustaf Berger: After a varied and colorful career in business, Berger began writing full time eight years ago. He’s never been happier. Six of his short stories have been published by literary journals. Death Postponed, which he worked on for five years (taking breaks to write three other books) is his first published novel. He looks forward to writing until he becomes physically unable to tap those keys.

Elisabeth Elo: Elo's suspense novel, North of Boston, was named one of Booklist’s “Best Crime Novels, 2014” and was published in six countries. Elisabeth worked as an editor, an advertising copywriter, a high-tech project manager, and a halfway house counselor before earning a PhD in American Literature at Brandeis University. Since then, she’s taught writing and literature at colleges in the Boston area. Her essays and short stories have appeared in a variety of publications, and a comic novel, Save Your Own, was published in 2006 under the name Elisabeth Brink.

Toni L.P. Kelner: This Agatha award winner is two authors in one. As Toni L.P. Kelner, she's the author of the eight Laura Fleming mysteries (available as ebooks and audio downloads) and three books in the "Where are they now?" series (all available as audio downloads, and the third is available is an ebook.) She has also co-edited urban fantasy anthologies with Charlaine Harris, including AN APPLE FOR THE CREATURE, and GAMES CREATURES PLAY, and solo-edited the anthology with DEAD BUT NOT FORGOTTEN. In between novels and short stories, she sneaks in short stories about pirates, PIs, zombies, and demonic phone calls. As Leigh Perry, she writes the Family Skeleton series featuring a walking talking skeleton named Sid. The series debuted with A SKELETON IN THE FAMILY in September 2013, and has continued with DEATH TAKES A BOW (2014).

This event is sponsored by the Whitman Friends of the Library.
