Mistress of the Art of Death
by Ariana Franklin

In medieval Cambridge, four children have been murdered. The Catholic townsfolk blame their Jewish neighbors, so to save them from the rioting mob, the Cambridge Jews are placed under the protection of the king. Henry II is no friend of the Jews - or anyone, really - but he believes in law and order, and he desperately needs the taxes he receives from Jewish merchants. Hoping scientific investigation will help catch the true killer, Henry calls on his cousin, the King of Sicily - whose subjects include the best medical experts in Europe - and asks for his finest "master of the art of death," the earliest form of medical examiner. The Italian doctor chosen for the task is a young prodigy from the University of Salerno, an expert in the science of anatomy and the art of detection. But her name is Adelia; the king has been sent a "mistress of the art of death."

Join us for a presentation by Kevin Kopchynski as we explore Life Underground!

At first, the idea of life underground may seem impossible. It is dark, damp and surrounded by dirt. Yet, many creatures call the underground their home for all or part of their lives. We see and admire trees, but we see only part of them. Underground their roots interact in fascinating ways. In caves many creatures live their lives without seeing the light of day. Some bacteria live inside of rocks, and over 400 lakes are underground in Antarctica. We will explore these many facets of the underground biosphere.

Sign ups are limited by the number of library computers. Participants can feel free to bring their own laptop if desired (NOTE: iPad app seems to work with individual Ancestry account ONLY).

Elizabeth and Hazel: Two Women of Little Rock
by David Margolick

Looks at the lives of the two women at the center of a famous historic photograph taken during the Little Rock school desegregation crisis in 1957--one, a black girl being harrassed by a mob; the other, a white teen at the center of the mob--in a book that discusses how each dealt with the fallout from that fateful day.

As part of our Epic Community Read with the Monson Free Library, Adult Services Librarian Mary Bell will host a book discussion on Outwitting History: The Amazing Adventures of a Man Who Rescued a Million Yiddish Books by Aaron Lansky.

In 1980, a twenty-three-year-old student named Aaron Lansky set out to rescue the world’s abandoned Yiddish books before it was too late. Twenty-five years and one and a half million books later, he’s still in the midst of a great adventure.

Filled with poignant and often laugh-out-loud tales from Lansky’s travels across the country as he collected books from older Jewish immigrants—books their own children had no use for—Outwitting History also explores brilliant Yiddish writers and enables us to see how an almost-lost culture is the bridge between the Old World and the future.
