misc_none 7:00 PM  -  8:30 PM Living History: Stories of Survival     Tell a Friend

Seng Ty, a survivor of the Khmer Rouge and author of Years of Zero, was thirteen when he made his way alone to a refugee camp in Thailand in 1981. His story was featured in Time Magazine’s article, which was read by an American family in Amherst, Massachusetts, who adopted him a year later. Now he is a citizen of the United States and an educator in the Lowell. He has shared his story on the Phil Donahue Show, many major newspapers, and CBS 60 Minutes.

Mary Recko, a survivor of the Holocaust, was born in Warsaw, Poland. In August of 1944 there was the Warsaw Uprising and the German army occupied the city.  The soldiers took her father, mother, younger sister and herself from their home.  Her father was separated from the family and sent to Buchenwald where he died in November of 1944.  The rest of the family was taken to Dachau and Bergen Belsen where they were detained until liberated in 1945. Mary, her mother, and sister came to the US in August of 1950 through the Catholic Relief Services and settled in Boston.
