Contact: Mary Kate Schulte    617-846-1703   schulte@noblenet.org

Young Adult author, Katie Bayerl, will discuss her book A Psalm for Lost Girls.

Katie fell in love with books before she can remember and with teaching when she was just a teen. The writing books for teens part came a bit later. She jumped right in and hasn’t looked back.

Katie has degrees in education from Brown, teaching from Tufts, and writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts. She has taught teens in a range of settings, worked as editor of a teen-generated magazine, led the communications efforts of a Boston nonprofit, and helped dozens of schools and nonprofits tell their stories. She currently leads the VCFA Young Writers Network and teaches classes for teens at GrubStreet. Her young adult fiction won early honors, including the PEN New England Children’s Book Discovery Award and the Flying Pig Bookstore/Vermont College Humor Award. A Psalm for Lost Girls (spring 2017, Putnam) is her first novel.

"[A] gripping story of loss and grace... Richly and evocatively written, Bayerl's story is ideal for fans of Jandy Nelson and Melina Marchetta." - Publisher's Weekly, starred review

"Fans of realistic fiction, mystery, or crime thrillers will find themselves at home in this spectacular debut... A compelling must-have for YA collections." - School Library Journal, starred review

"Ideal for fans of both mysteries and character-driven novels." - Booklist

Story Jam Workshop/Story Slam with accomplished storyteller Julie Baker.

For Adults and Teens.

Have you ever listened to The Moth on public radio and thought "I have some great stories...I wonder if I could do that?".  Or, "I wish I could hear stories like that without going to Boston".

Now you can!

6:00 - 6:45 pm  Story Jam Storytelling Workshop  Join storyteller & educator Julie Baker for a special storytelling workshop.  Julie is a local Moth story slam winner and regularly appears at storytelling events in and around Boston.  She is a volunteer and featured storyteller at Massmouth events, has appeared on WGBH Stories from the Stage, and is a frequent teller and host at the South Shore Story Slams at Doyle's Cafe.

In this 45 minute workshop, Julie will teach you how to tell an entertaining 5 minute true story with no notes.  This workshop is designed to provide a safe space to develop and practice a story on the theme, "The Next Chapter".

7:00 - 8:00 pm   Story Slam   After a short break, we'll welcome neighbors, friends, and other community members into the library for a mini Moth-style story slam on the theme, "The Next Chapter".  Anyone who would like to tell a story is invited to put their name in the hat.  Whether you want to tell your story, or simply sit and listen, you'll be glad you came.

Free event.  Sponsored by the Friends of the Winthrop Public Library.

Light refreshments will be served.  Please join us.
