This workshop introduces the skills small libraries need to prepare for the policy change requiring all member libraries to place their own holds in western MA C/W MARS locations by July 1, 2009. Content of the workshop includes instructions and hands on practice in: searching the C/W MARS data base, placing holds, checking items that are charged or overdue on the library’s account, placing subject requests, using the ILL online forms, shortcuts to filling out request forms, keeping local records, troubleshooting requests, and other ILL resources as time allows. This workshop is offered in a small group seminar format. Jan Resnick and Shirley Keech will conduct the workshop.

They love to challenge authority and are notoriously moody -- are we talking about teens, or two-year-olds? Teen brain growth development rivals that of the toddler years -- maybe that explains the attitude and characteristics of this historically underserved age group. Discover the underlying biological and physical changes that may impact why teens act the way they do, and learn how librarians can address patron behavior issues in a way that will develop relationships with young adults. By the end of this session, participants will:
* Name three changes the teen brain undergoes during adolescence
* Identify teen developmental assets
* Distinguish between library behaviors that are merely disruptive/annoying vs. harmful/dangerous
* Learn how to apply tips for nipping negative behavior in the bud
Beth Gallaway, Information Goddess Consulting, is the workshop leader.

By the end of this session, participants will:
• Discover model programs in technology for teens
• Test new technologies and evaluate for usability
• Brainstorm a teen technology program

Computer based games and gaming are extremely popular with kids and newer adults. Some libraries are beginning to develop collections of games and books on game strategies; other libraries don't know where or if to start. This roundtable will address the questions by bringing together librarians who do and do not collect games. Join us to learn where to get them, how to keep them, and what's popular.

As NASA Returns to the Moon, you can bring an actual piece of the moon to your summer programming through a free training opportunity provided by NASA Education and the Aerospace Education Services Project (AESP.) Completion of this two-hour workshop will certify you to borrow educational disks from NASA that contain samples of the lunar materials collected by the Apollo astronauts. This workshop will include a historical perspective on the Apollo era of exploration and simple, inexpensive activities that will reinforce MA grade 3-5 standards for Earth-Moon Relationships. There will be time set aside specifically for brainstorming with your peers to develop your ideas for the related summer reading program. Presented by Richard Varner, Aerospace Education Specialist, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD.

Intended for librarians and support staff in interlibrary loan and reference, this hands-on computer lab will provide
a step-by-step introduction to the databases and an overview of the variety of electronic resources available to you and your patrons. We'll review tips on basic searching, and techniques for the Advanced Search. You'll acquire the knowledge and self-confidence to help your patrons find full-text periodical articles themselves! There will be ample time for questions and free time to practice in the lab. Your participation in this program fulfills the Database Training requirement for the "Basic Library Techniques in Reference" course that WMRLS is conducting this fall.
