Graphic Novels in Libraries: Not Just For Kids Anymore

Does your library have a graphic novel (GN) collection? Do you want to build one and don’t know where to start? Do you just want to know what all the fuss is about? Join Lisa Prolman, Assistant Director at the Greenfield Public Library and graphic novel enthusiast, for an informative and fun morning exploring this genre. We will discuss traditional superhero comics, the growing subgenre of non-fiction and biography, literary comics (yes, there are some!), and various types of manga (Japanese comics). Learn about resources available to you to determine if the graphic novels you want to purchase are appropriate for your collection and programs you can run to highlight your collection. Graphic Novels will be available for browsing.

Basic Library Techniques in Reference

This day long reference event will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Pittsfield. Presented by Belinda Boon of Kent State University, this training on reference resources, the reference interview, and reference with youth will count as 75% of the reference educational requirement that Directors in towns under 10,000 population without a Masters in Library Science degree must meet to maintain their library's certification with the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. Participation in the Online Resources: Finding Full Text Articles and more! training on electronic resources provided through Gale and Newsbank will complete the reference requirement. WMRLS will provide several opportunities for librarians to receive this database training within FY09/10. Lunch will be provided to all participants.

Rain or Shine ... Show your support for libraries by taking part in the Book It to the Library Road Race. Five days a week WMRLS delivery trucks travel the hills and valleys of Western Massachusetts delivering books and other library materials to patrons at their libraries. The race will begin and end at the Western Massachusetts Regional Library System in Whately. Runners and walkers will travel down gently sloping paved roads that pass through picturesque farm lands and residential neighborhoods.

After a brief business meeting Leverett Library Director Linda Wentworth will report on what it took to organize the extremely successful First Annual Friends of WMRLS BOOK IT TO THE LIBRARY Road Race, which just took place as a fundraiser for WMRLS on October 3. The race was a huge success and lots of fun, so come to learn the nuts and bolts of how you can organize your own community road race! We will also hear from Regional Administrator John Ramsay about what is happening in the budget struggle for regional library systems next year.
The Friends of WMRLS support the regional library with monetary donations and organizational help. They advocate for libraries all across Massachusetts and make it possible for all of us to meet with our elected state officials at Legislative Breakfasts and at the State House each spring.

FRBR: How it can help you prepare for RDA: Live Instructor Led Online Course

FRBR (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records) was created in 1998 and is the basis for the new RDA (Resource Description and Access). RDA is slated to replace AACR2 and be released in early 2010. Come and explore the new vocabulary and the bones of FRBR. By identifying FRBR, you are ready to recognize RDA when it is completed. Lively discussion is encouraged. This class is geared towards both lecture and discussion. Extra time has been built into the class to encourage free flowing discussion of the topics.
Prerequisites: Participants should have a basic knowledge of cataloging principles and MARC format. Short homework assignments are required after each session. Class participation includes discussion (both verbal and text available) and contribution to cooperative assignments.
This course consists of two 2-hour sessions. WMRLS will issue a coupon code to all registrants that waives the $360 per person course fee.
