According to the Office of Educational Research and Improvement of the U.S. Department of Education (1993), “performance assessment, also known as alternative or authentic assessment, is a form of testing that requires students to perform a task rather than select an answer from a ready-made list.” Many classrooms incorrectly use participation as a measure of achievement when a performance assessment should be done.
