You’ve completed the assessment of your readers. You’ve determined their strengths and needs. You’ve implemented some instructional strategies but they don’t seem to be making much difference. Now what? What’s next?
A professional study group for elementary teachers is being formed around questions like these that often arise after assessment. Through a Distance Learning forum, a study group will “meet” for 6 one hour sessions to explore topics related to planning instruction in response to assessed student reading strengths and needs, K-6. The study group will read the professional text, What’s After Assessment? by Kathleen Strickland. The text will provide a foundation for individual session topics across the study group series. Some of those topics will include discussion of what assessments are available and which are being used by study group members, along with planning instruction in areas such as phonological awareness and phonics, working with words, fluency, developing meaning vocabulary, and strategies for comprehending.
The professional study group will meet from distance learning sites across the BOCES. (Specific sites to be determined.) Meetings are scheduled for January 12, January 26, February 9, February 23, March 9, and March 23. Study group conversations will run from 4:00-5:00 on these dates. While educators interested in participating in this professional study group do not need to register for all 6 sessions, they are encouraged to participate in the first broadcast on January 12th.

Recognizing the experiences and histories of all our students is an important first step in creating a climate that honors and celebrates diversity. As educators, our teaching behaviors should reinforce our commitment to equity. Activities and discussions will provide you with strategies to work with your students on appreciating each other and dispelling the stereotypes that divide us. This session will also address the perceptions that drive false realities.

We are pleased to announce that we will host a new series of interactive workshop sessions for Pre-K teachers during the 2009-2010 school year. Those who attended in 2008-2009 found it very valuable to get to know one another to share ideas about teaching, assessment practices, photos and materials from their own classrooms. Participants identified several areas of interest that will be the focus of our workshop series for 2009-2010. A list-serve has also been established to facilitate communication among participants. This innovative model for professional development provides an ideal venue for collaborating on issues pertinent to Pre-K teachers in classrooms throughout the region. We hope you will plan to join us to discuss new ideas and network with other pre-kindergarten professionals!

“Are you tired of being stressed out? Is everyone driving you crazy? Are you tired of solving constant problems?” This workshop will allow you to take a look at your life and define the stressors that control you. You will leave with an enlightened concept of “self” and learn how to deal with those “button pushers”. Humor will highlight the session.
