    Contact: Suzanne Martell   (508) 430-7562 ext 7   smartell@clamsnet.org

Presented by James Claflin, author of the book Lighthouses and life-Saving Along Cape Cod published in July 2014.  For centuries, heroic men and women have guarded the treacherous yet beloved Cape Cod coastlines. From Provincetown to Chatham, Sandwich to Cuttyhunk, and many towns in between, residents have relied on the Atlantic for employment and nourishment. In 1792, as shipping increased, mariners petitioned for a sorely needed lighthouse. It was not until 1797 that the first lighthouse on Cape Cod was built at the Highlands in North Truro. This program is cosponsored by the Harwich Historical Society and offered as part of the Maritime Days offered by the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce.

    Contact: Suzanne Martell   (508) 430-7562 x7   smartell@clamsnet.org

JUMPIN' JUBA, together since 1998, plays a unique mix of blues and roots-y rock & roll tunes, with flavors from many other genres (folk-Americana, Latin, Caribbean, jazz and country) stirred into their blue stew. STEVE HURL brings a songwriter's focus to the band's many blues-inflected styles . He plays a tough, sensuous guitar, and bends his slightly raspy voice around blues melodies with nuance and conviction. BRUCE WARD is a REAL piano player. He plays with a pounding precision reminiscent of Otis Spann, Prof. Longhair, and Jimmy Yancey. He's adept at Blue Note label-type jazz-blues amalgams, and lately, has developed an affinity for Cuban jazz flavors. BRIAN FLAN is equally at home playing in a theatre or a roadhouse. His drumming is solid, tasteful, funky, with an excellent sense of swing. Concert will move inside to Brooks Free Library in case of rain with limited attendance.

“The Greatest Generation Meets” is a monthly book group that meets on the third Friday of the month from 1:00-2:00 in the Thornton Room at the Brooks Free Library. “The Greatest Generation” is a term coined by Tom Brokaw that pays tribute to the men and women who served our country, both overseas and at home, during World War II. If you are a member of this generation, or are interested in this period of history, join our discussion and share your ideas and experiences. This month's selection is                    . Pick up a copy of the book at the circulation desk. Harwich residents needing transportation should call the Council On Aging van at (508) 241-1566 by 11am the day before each Friday to make a reservation.
