    Kyung Yoo will present a free solo classical guitar performance in the Library’s Whiton Meeting Room on November 21 at 3 PM. He will perform Bach BWV 997, BWV 998 and BWV1003. The program is sponsored by the Hingham Public Library and the Boston Classical Guitar Society as part of its “Saturday Sounds Special” series. Kyung Yoo, a native of Seoul, South Korea, began learning classical guitar at the age of 12. In 1978 he moved to the Boston area to study classical guitar at the New England Conservatory of Music. Over the years he has studied classical guitar with Robert Sullivan, Neil Anderson and David Leisner and taken master classes with Manuel Barruecco and Virginia Luque. In 1984, while at New England Conservatory, he won the Conservatory’s Honors Gala Chamber Music Competition and premiered a guitar trio Sori, written for guitar, flute and cello and composed by fellow Korean Byungdong Paik. Kyung Yoo now dedicates himself to the study and performance of the music of J.S. Bach. Kyung Yoo performing J.S.Bach     [Directions]

    Water Works is a sustainability project that will reduce plastic water bottle consumption in Hingham and Hull by facilitating the availability of inexpensive reusable water bottles as well as access to refilling stations. We will discuss the scope of the project and form a team to move forward. We are seeking a team of 6-8 volunteers. Please come and contribute your knowledge.

Steve Marchena is a Magna cum Laude graduate of Berklee College of Music with a degree in music performance. He has studied with John Mason, David Newsam, Bill Bounocore and John Finn. Marchena is equally at home performing classical, rock, jazz and traditional blues. In addition to performing regularly as a solist, he also performs with the Back Bay Guitar Trio.     Author Anthony M. Sammarco will present a slide lecture on Milton's Baker Chocolate Company, the subject of his new book titled "The Baker Chocolate Company: A Sweet History. "The Baker Chocolate Factory was the oldest manufacturer of chocolate in the United States. His lecture will be followed by a book-signing.



Mr. Sammarco is the author of numerous books on the history and development of the Boston area. A graduate of the University of Massachusetts, he also teaches at the Urban College of Boston. His course on "Boston's Immigrants" was developed especially for the Urban College. [Directions]

    Gerry Johnston performs slections from the Great American Songbook. Sponsored by the Library and the Boston Classical Guitar Society as part of the Saturday Sounds Special Series. Free.
Mr. Johnston is an accomplished musician who eschews stylistic barriers and includes music from a variety of musical genres in his performances. A particular specialty for which he has become known is “The Great American Songbook.” These are his own arrangements of the standards by composers such as George Gershwin, Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck, Carole King, Burt Bacharach and others, played on the classical guitar.
Mr. Johnston began studying guitar at age ten. After high school, he moved to Boston to study jazz at Berklee College of Music and then classical guitar at the New England Conservatory, from which he graduated as a guitar performance major [Directions]

    Daniel Acsadi performs solo classical guitar as part of the Saturday Sounds Special Series offered by the library in conjunction with the Boston Classical Guitar Society. Free.

Through his acclaimed performances, arrangements, and teaching, Dan Acsadi is a passionate advocate for both the guitar and the music of his native Hungary. Dan’s arrangements encompass art and folk music of the 18th through 21st centuries, innovatively expanding the guitar’s repertoire. Acsadi earned his Masters in Music from New England Conservatory (NEC) and B.A. from Cornell University, where he double majored in music and economics. He is currently pursuing the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at NEC with Eliot Fisk. He maintains a large and diverse teaching studio in the Boston area. [Directions]

    Guitarist Robert Margo and vocalist Wendy Silverberg perform in concert as part of the Saturday Sounds Special Series sponsored by the Library and the Boston Classical Guitar Society. Free.

Soprano Wendy J. Silverberg has combined a career as a music educator with more than three decades of performance. Since 1972, she has appeared as a member of the Boston Cecilia ensemble in more than 125 concerts and has joined the chorus for several recording sessions preserved on the AFK Records and Newport Classics label on CD. She has performed with the chorus to celebrate Symphony Hall's 100 th Anniversary, at Boston's First Night, and with the Boston Christmas Pops. She has sung under the direction of such noted conductors and composers as Donald Teeters, Daniel Pinkham, Benjamin Zander and Christopher Hogwood. She earned the Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education at the University of Rhode Island, and the Masters Degree in Education from Antioch College. An advocate of pedagogical theories of Zoltan Kodaly, Silverberg has taught in the Cambridge Public Schools since 1971, and remains active in the Kodaly Musical Training Institute. She currently studies voice with Pamela Wood.

Guitarist Robert Margo studied classical guitar with William Newman in Philadelphia and John Johns in Nashville. Margo has performed in master classes taught by noted classical guitarists Sergio and Odair Assad, Manuel Barrueco, and David Starobin, and he has given solo and duo recitals in Boston and Nashville. On mandolin Margo performs in concert and on recordings with the Providence (Rhode Island) Mandolin Orchestra, and he was a prizewinner on mandolin in the 2005 Classical Mandolin Society of America performance competition. Margo writes a regular column, “The Fourth String” for the Boston Classical Guitar Society newsletter. When he is not making music, Margo can be found teaching and conducting research in economic history at Boston University, where he serves as Professor of Economics and African-American Studies.
