Ted Reinstein has been a reporter for “Chronicle,” WCVB-TV/Boston’s award-winning and America’s longest-running, locally-produced, nightly news magazine since 1997. He has written this book with his wife, Emmy award-winning journalist, Anne-Marie Dorning. The book looks at how the humble general store helped shape New England, and how today, in the era of the big box store, it continues to be a focal point and a gathering place for towns all across the region. No wonder that, like the diner, the general store is enjoying a resurgence and is even being reinvented and reimagined.  Registration required. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

Are you working on a short story, a screenplay, essays, or a novel? Is it a story you feel must be told or are you experimenting with something new? Whether you are new to writing, in the middle of several projects, or have published work, this group is for you! The goals of this meetup are to empower each other by offering constructive feedback, encourage one another to push the boundaries of our writing, establish an online presence, and if it's your goal, to get published. We will meet the 3rd Saturday of every month.

Ground Rules:

1. You don't have to have a piece of writing to share in order to attend.

2. Please limit submissions to no more than 4 pages so that we may have time to offer you proper feedback.

3. Bring printed copies of your writing to share, and yes, you are going to have to estimate. If you don't bring enough, that's okay, we can share.

4. Make sure your writing has: your name, the title of the piece, and PAGE NUMBERS. This makes it easier for us to follow along.

5. You are encouraged to read a section of your writing with the group. This is a great way to hear the story through your voice and get a sense of the plot and characters. You are also encouraged to tell us what you'd like us to focus on (e.g. character development, style, structure, flow, etc.).

6. Please be mindful that it is not always easy to share personal writing, so be constructive when offering feedback and refrain from focusing on mechanical issues. The reader can check those when they receive everyone's marked copies.

Judith Walz has been organizing and running events and groups long before Meetup.com was a thing. She's a teacher turned entrepreneur who took her passion for traveling around the world and writing, and combined it into a successful business. She loves meeting new people and connecting them with each other to form lasting friendships and business connections.

He will also discuss and display his remarkable photographs of tribal living (Himba tribe) trying to hold onto its almost extinct culture. Most of the land is desert but nearly all of the African game animals still live there. Join librarian Roxane Starkin as she moderates this new and unique book club for busy families looking to do something fun together during the winter months. Here's the idea: listen to the book together - in the car, at home, wherever. The club will meet on December 26, January 30, and February 27 from 6:30-7:30 pm to talk about the story (with the added fun of discussing the narration).

We will be choosing books appropriate for students in grades 4 through 6. Parents, Grandparents, Guardians are all welcome to participate.

Please note: we will have a special guest on January 30 -  Mike Zeller, our Electronic Resources Librarian. Mike will provide information on how to access to free audiobooks available through your library card account.

If you would like to read a brief article about the benefits of listening to audiobooks, follow this link: http://www.readingrockets.org/article/benefits-audiobooks-all-readers
