Justice: What is the Right Thing to Do? “'Justice' is one of the most popular courses in Harvard’s history.” Boston’s public television station WGBH teamed up with Harvard University Professor Michael Sandel to record his popular lecture series, “Justice: What is the Right Thing to Do?” This fall, we are going to offer this program on 12 consecutive Tuesday evenings (repeating the daytime program offered this summer). Open discussion is encouraged about the ethical issues presented following each segment. “In this twelve part series, Sandel challenges us with difficult moral dilemmas and asks our opinion about the right thing to do. He then asks us to examine our answers in the light of new scenarios. The results are often surprising, revealing that important moral questions are never black and white.” Visit the Justice website at www.justiceharvard.org to read more about this fascinating production and join us as we “attend” Dr. Sandel’s lectures and then continue the debate started by the students in the classroom. The tentative schedule for the fall is: Sept. 21: The Moral Side of Murder / The Case for Cannibalism; Sept. 28: Putting a Price Tag on Life / How to Measure Pleasure; Oct 5: Free to Choose / Who Owns Me?; Oct. 12: This Land is my Land / Consenting Adults; Oct. 19: Hired Guns? / For Sale: Motherhood; Oct. 26: Mind Your Motive / The Supreme Principle of Morality; Nov. 2: A Lesson in Lying / A Deal is a Deal; Nov. 9: What’s a Fair Start? / What Do We Deserve?; Nov. 16: Arguing Affirmative Action / What's the Purpose?; Nov. 23: The Good Citizen / Freedom vs. Fit; Nov. 30: The Claims of Community / Where Our Loyalty Lies; Dec. 7: Debating Same-sex Marriage / The Good Life. Please register for this program if you are interested. If there are enough responses, the program will be offered. You will be contacted either way.

The English Conversation Group this summer did so well that we have decided to continue to hold this group through the rest of the year. Magda, one of our wonderful and dedicated volunteers, has graciously agreed to continue to lead this group every Thursday morning from 10:30 to 11:30 in the Quiet Study. The first official meeting of this group will be Thursday, September 9, 2010 and will continue through the end of December. The class will not meet when the library is closed on November 11, 2010 for Veteran's Day and November 25, 2010 for Thanksgiving. This group is for those who already speak some English but want to develop their conversation skills in a social setting. ESL instruction will not be given. This is a walk-in group; you do not need to attend every session; however, each student who attends should come to each class prepared with a topic they wish to discuss with the group. Photographs or mementos that you can share with the group are encouraged. This group is a fun way to enjoy a friendly conversation while having a chance to practice English Language conversation in a non-judgmental setting. For more information, contact the Information Desk.
