"Fact Into Fiction:" Creative Writing Workshops for Teens with author and poet Steven Parlato

Thursday, August 13 also. We strongly encourage you to attend both workshops, as different topics will be discussed and there will be an opportunity for Steven to constructively review your writing.

Steven Parlato is an Assistant Professor of English at Naugatuck Valley Community College. Following the release of his debut YA novel, "The Namesake" in 2013, "Publishers Weekly" called Steven “a name to watch.” Steven has led writing workshops at several Connecticut libraries, and is pleased to add Southington Library to the list! Follow him online at www.stevenparlato.com and on Twitter @parlatowrites.

Using real-life observations and experiences, Steven will help participants create vivid fiction. Focusing on the little details of the world around us (including sensory descriptions) and the bigger issues of experiences, participants will learn to create fiction that feels truly authentic.

Bring with you whatever you use to write... Pen and paper... laptop... iPad...

misc_none 9:00 AM  -  9:00 PM Artist of the Month Andy Zygmunt Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Andy Zygmunt majored in physics while studying at UConn, but he couldn’t help but be intrigued by art.

Zygmunt recalled living across the hall from an art major in the 1970s and being fascinated by the student’s textbooks. He remembered looking at pieces of work by Leonardo da Vinci and trying to recreate them.

Before he knew it, Zygmunt was hooked.

“I was doodling with my ballpoint pen in my physics notes,” Zygmunt recalled. “I love faces. I copied whatever I liked for a long time.”

For more than 20 years, Zygmunt has created pieces of artwork for himself and for clients on the side while working in the computer world full-time.

“It started when I was 5 years old and I made toys out of paper tubes and cardboard,” said Zygmunt, a Southington resident. “I didn’t know it was art, but it was.”

Zygmunt often works with pastels, pen and ink, oil, and more. He says every medium is different and creates art in a unique way that he can’t find one he loves to use more often than the other.

For the past three years Zygmunt has been on the board of directors for the Southington Arts Council. Since he’s been on the board, Zygmunt has helped out with different events including a recent gallery he helped judge called “Artists with Disabilities” that was on display over the summer at Paris in Plantsville gallery.

He also worked on a mural on one of the Total Maintenance buildings facing the Rails to Trails Linear Trail in Plantsville called “Superdog.”

"Fact into Fiction:" Creative Writing Workshops with poet and author Steven Parlato.

Wednesday, July 29 also.

Pen and paper... laptop... iPad...

This group of books will take you to Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Connecticut.

Back to Connecticut on November 12, to discuss The Cold Blue Blood by David Handler.

New York film critic Mitch Berger, assigned to do a feature story on Connecticut's Gold Coast, rents a cottage on a private island. When a body is found in Mitch's garden, he becomes "a person of interest" - in more ways than one - to Lt. Desiree Mitry of the CT State Police.
