misc_none 6:30 PM  -  8:30 PM Lincoln Center screening program to be announced Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Broadway Variety and American Songbook of Unsung Carolyn Leigh

From such popular standards as “Witchcraft” and “Young at Heart” to Broadway’s Little Me and Peter Pan, legendary lyricist Carolyn Leigh has an enduring legacy of smart, sophisticated and often sexy songwriting. Unsung Carolyn Leigh highlights the Tony-and Grammy-nominated icon’s little-known works, including several jazz-infused items from her acclaimed 1969 Gatsby score, a cut song from How Now Dow Jones, and two numbers written with Marvin Hamlisch for the original, unproduced version of Smile. Ten dynamic performers, a sizzling trio of musicians and over twenty melodic gems color the intimate evening, which also features rare audio clips from two of Ms. Leigh’s original demo recordings.

Due to the extreme length of the original screening selection this Broadway Variety program was chosen as a replacement.

This free concert film will be presented in the Program Room and will run from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.

Seabiscuit is the true story of the undersized Depression-era racehorse whose victories lifted not only the spirits of the team behind it but also took the entire nation on the ride of a lifetime.  Jeff Bridges stars as Charles Howard, an entrepreneur who owns the unlikely racehorse.  Howard teams with partially blind boxer-turned-jockey Red Pollard (Toby Maguire) and horse trainer Tom Smith (Chris Cooper). Together, the three work to help the famed horse to several symbolic victories that helped to inspire a downtrodden 1930s America. The supporting cast, headed by William H. Macy, includes Elizabeth Banks (Spider-Man) and real-life jockeys Gary Stevens and Chris McCarron.  This 2003 release by Universal Pictures is directed by Gary Ross and is a dramatization of  Seabiscuit: An American Legend by Laura Hillenbrand.

Mariachi is an important part of Mexican folk culture, known for its vivid vocals, driving string rhythms and soaring trumpet melodies. New York’s first all-female mariachi group and one of the city’s most exciting new bands, Mariachi Flor de Toloache celebrates the traditions of this folk form from around the world while creating a style all their own. Mariachi Flor de Toloache takes pride in choosing material from the traditional mariachi playbook but also uses other musical influences within their work. Their original songs and new arrangements reflect the influence of salsa, cumbia, gypsy music, Latin jazz as well as pop, hip-hop and even soul music. This free concert film will be presented in the Program Room and will run from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.  Registration begins Wednesday April 12th.
