misc_none 9:00 AM  -  5:00 PM Artists of the Month Brownbag Art Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

"Brownbag" is a collective of local Southington artists that explore art in every medium we can find: landscapes, cartoons, portraits, pretty colors, and plenty of abstraction along the way. Although we've been exploring art forever, we started collectively promoting “Brownbag Art” online and around town in 2013. They have had a number of booths and displays in and around town, so you may already be familiar with "Brownbag".

Displayed works are by 4 artists: Kevin Curtis is behind the marbling, Cody Lord paints the landscapes, Gerry Niemierowko works most with pen and ink characters, and John Sokolowski takes the photographs. The works are on display for the month January.

In 2014 artists worked under the direction of Joey Mauro, another "Brownbag" artist, with Curse the Son, Hamden's heaviest doom metal band, to film and produce the band's first official music video. Browse through their works @ https://www.facebook.com/brownbagartistz

You can contact Brownbag through their Facebook page or email John @ johnesokolowski@yahoo.com if you have any questions or are interested in making a purchase.

Most of us know or think we know who Ernest Hemingway was -- a brilliant writer full of macho swagger, driven to take on huge feats of bravery and a pitcher or two of martinis -- before lunch. But beneath this man or myth, or some combination of the two, is another Hemingway, one we’ve never seen before. Hadley Richardson, Hemingway’s first wife, is the perfect person to reveal him to us -- and also to immerse us in the incredibly exciting and volatile world of Jazz-age Paris.

This month Patricia will discuss, The Pilot's Wife by Anita Shreve.Who can guess what a woman will do when the unthinkable becomes her reality? Until now, Kathryn Lyons's life has been peaceful if ordinary: a satisfying job teaching high school in the New England mill town of her childhood; a picture-perfect home by the ocean; a precocious, independent-minded fifteen-year-old daughter; and a happy marriage whose occasional dull passages she attributes to the unavoidable deadening effect of time.

They called her Reckless A True Story of War, Love And One Extraordinary Horse    By Janet Barrett

When the  Fifth Regiment's Recoilless Rifle Platoon acquired a small Korean pony to haul ammunition to the front lines, what they got was a real-life warhorse, the courageous and indomitable Reckless, who stood with her Marines for two years during the Korean War, saving many lives, raising spirits, and winning the love and respect of all who knew her.

Now read her full story, enhanced by 14 pages of photographs. Awesome, heart-warming, and downright funny -- just the way she was -- as remembered by those who knew Reckless, and love her still today.

Ms. Barrett's talk will weave some history of the Korean War and the Marines’ part in it with Reckless’ story – the heroics, and the amusing events.

Copies of the book will be available to purchase at the end of the program. Registration is required, please click the Register button below.
