March 14: Edward Larson's "A Magnificent Catastrophe: The Tumultuous Election of 1800, America's First Presidential Campaign". The presidential election of 1800 was so fraught with controvery that Thomas Jefferson called it "America's second revolution." This title is available to borrow from the Reference Desk. Author David Pietrusza will join Dr. Paul Petterson in the discussion of "1920. The Year of Six Presidents". There will be a limited number of copies of this book available to borrow. Registration will begin April 11th.

May 23: "Game Change: Obama and the Clintons, McCain and Palin and the Race of a Lifetime," by John Heileman and Mark Halperin. A riveting backstage look at the 2008 presidential election. The Financial Times called it "one of the best books on politics of any kind." Registration will begin April 11th.

These four books cover over a century of American presidential elections and will give participants the opportunity to discuss a broad range of political and social issues including our form of government, women's right to vote, prohibition, corruption, image-makers, the role of the press and more.

Dr. Paul Petterson, Chair of the Political Science Dept. at CCSU  will lead all four discussions.

misc_none 7:00 PM  -  9:00 PM Southington Reads 2016 Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

The Southington Library is delighted to announce that Anita Diamant is our 2016 Southington Reads author. Anita is a world-famous, best-selling author. Her novel The Red Tent has been published in more than 25 countries and was adapted as a Lifetime TV miniseries.

We have chosen Anita's most recent best-selling novel The Boston Girl as the book we will read this year. The Boston Girl is an exploration of the immigrant experience set against the backdrop of two World Wars, prohibition, the flu epidemic and the civil rights movement.

Here is what the critics are saying about The Boston Girl:
"Ravishing. . . .whip-smart, warm, and full of feeling... deeply pleasurable. . . you can't help wanting to linger." (Boston Globe)

"Crisp, lively, clear, wry, affectionate, compulsively readable and very entertaining...The Boston Girl's...[narrator] is supremely brave and bighearted - a marvelous role model no matter how you parse it." (San Francisco Chronicle)

"The Boston Girl convincingly traces the story of a scrappy, intelligent immigrant, who does more than merely survive the 20th century; she embraces it all-tragedies, joys, and the humdrum-with unflagging passion." (Miami Herald)

"Addie, the narrator,  is a good storyteller, and her descriptions of the human devastation of World War I and the flu epidemic have an immediacy that blows away any historical dust." (USA Today)

Anita will be speaking at The Aqua Turf on Wednesday, March 30th. Registration will begin Thursday,  February 18th, 2016. Save the date.

When registration is open click the Register button below to register.

Copies of The Boston Girl are available at the Library. Call (860.628.0947 option  6500) or visit www.southingtonlibrary.org  to reserve a copy.

misc_none 6:30 PM  -  8:30 PM Path to the Presidency series Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

The Path to the Presidency will be a four-part, scholar-led book discussion series designed to stimulate lively discussion about America's political system as seen through our presidential elections.  The following books will be discussed:

March 14: Edward Larson's "A Magnificent Catastrophe: The Tumultuous Election of 1800, America's First Presidential Campaign". The presidential election of 1800 was so fraught with controvery that Thomas Jefferson called it "America's second revolution." This title should be available to borrow on Tuesday February 16th.

April 11: "1920: The Year of the Six Presidents," by David Pietrusza. In 1920 Wilson, Harding, Coolidge, Hoover, Teddy and Franklin Roosevelt were all in the race for the White House. Author David Pietrusza will join Dr. Paul Petterson in the discussion of "1920. The Year of Six Presidents". There will be a limited number of copies of this book available to borrow. Everyone is invited to meet the author and join in the discussion. Registration will begin March 14th.

May 9: "The Making of the President 1960," by Theodore H. White. This book changed the nature of political journalism. White was granted almost complete access to both candidates and his class book tells the story of the battle between JFK and Richard Nixon including coverage of the first televised debates.

Registration is required. Registration for todays (April 11th)  discussion will begin Monday, March 14th, please click the register button below or contact the Reference/Information staff at 860.628.0947 option 5 for more information.

misc_none 6:30 PM  -  8:30 PM Path to the Presidency series Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Registration is required. Registration for todays (May 9th)  discussion will begin Monday April 11th, please click the register button below or contact the Reference/Information staff at 860.628.0947 option 5 for more information.
