Andy Zygmunt is an artist and illustrator from Southington. He specializes in portraits and illustration but has a wide variety of interests and is fluent in Pencil, Pastel, Watercolor, Oils, Acrylics, and Digital media. For more information about Andy and to see more of his work please visit his website at http://www.petshark.com.

Artist’s Statement

"I was an artist long before I knew it. From age five I made toys, games, airplanes, boats and dinosaurs out of cardboard, paper, tape and whatever I could find, while drawing my ideas on paper to make the more complicated things clearer.  After high-school, I became fascinated by human faces and started copying them. In college I made the jump to classical art and have been drawing and painting ever since, though I've never settled on a single medium. I believe that making art is not really what we do with our hands, but what we do with our eyes, and the mind behind them. "

Visit the Gallery at the Library while the exhibit is on display during the normal business hours of the library, Monday through Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Friday and Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  The Gallery is located on the main level near the Café and the Mezzanine. Together with her inexperienced but plucky young lawyer Randy Schoenberg (Reynolds), she embarks upon a major battle which takes them all the way to the heart of the Austrian establishment and the U.S. Supreme Court, and forces her to confront difficult truths about the past along the way.  PG-13 109 minutes.

"Fact into Fiction:" Creative Writing Workshops with poet and author Steven Parlato.

Wednesday, July 29 also. We strongly encourage you to attend both workshops, as different topics will be discussed and there will be an opportunity for Steven to constructively review your writing.

Steven Parlato is an Assistant Professor of English at Naugatuck Valley Community College. Following the release of his debut YA novel, "The Namesake" in 2013, "Publishers Weekly" called Steven “a name to watch.” Steven has led writing workshops at several Connecticut libraries, and is pleased to add Southington Library to the list! Follow him online at www.stevenparlato.com and on Twitter @parlatowrites.

Using real-life observations and experiences, Steven will help participants create vivid fiction. Focusing on the little details of the world around us (including sensory descriptions) and the bigger issues of experiences, participants will learn to create fiction that feels truly authentic.

Bring with you whatever you use to write... Pen and paper... laptop... iPad...

If you are a writer or think you might want to become one these workshops will help you get on the right page.

W. Somerset Maugham once said, “There are only three rules for writing a novel. Unfortunately, nobody knows what they are.”  Maybe he was wrong. Different techniques work for different people, and Steve offers methods that take advantage of your own skills and interests. He offers a low-stress approach that will produce a few pages every day instead of trying to create a “whole novel” in one gulp. By breaking the novel down to the components of character, plot, and scene, these exercises will help you whether you like to plan everything out, jump right in, or do a little of each.

Attendance is required at both workshops and registration is required. For more information about Steve and his writing please visit his website at www.steveliskow.com.

misc_none 9:00 AM  -  9:00 PM Artist of the Month Angie Shearstone Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

I've been a professional artist for over two decades. Over that time, I have explored many subjects and accumulated a large body of work. I hope you enjoy my work!

Angi Shearstone is an award-winning professional artist with an MFA in comics, a small herd of cats, strong geek tendencies and a fondness for ska-core.  She's worked in children's books with Mercer Mayer, in comics on Batman: Gotham County Line with Scott Hampton, and on Princess: Tales of Girls who Rock with Jeremy Whitley, collaborated with Mur Lafferty on Beyond the Storm: Shadows of the Big Easy, and otherwise has self-published a handful of comic book projects, two of which with Joe Sutliff Sanders.

She currently designs, illustrates, works with video, and sells fine art painting to keep the bills paid while working on her own projects. Her video and design website can be found at ShearstoneCreative.com

She is currently writing a novel version of her epic-sized fully painted comic book BloodDreams, in the belief that she can get the first story arc done in prose faster than trying to paint the next 4 issues. The first two issues are available at ComiXology.com,  and a printed version of the first issue can be ordered direct from Angi at BloodDreams.com.

The rest of Angi's comic books and sequential art projects can be found at paintedcomics.com

“A painting is never finished, it simply stops in interesting places...”
(Paul Gardner)
