misc_none 9:00 AM  -  9:00 PM May Artist of the Month Friends Share the Gallery Wall Starr Erkel and Joanne Cyr Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Starr studied photography at Endicott College, where she captured Pope John Paul II looking directly at her during his visit to Boston. She taught photography to students of Wesleyan University’s Upward Bound program, and still smiles thinking of the expression on the student’s face when the first Black & White print appeared through the chemicals. Starr has dabbled in writing poetry since she was a kid. She would play her guitar and write ‘lyrics’ to the tunes.

This show, “Photo Prose – Naturally”, brings her two favorite hobbies together into an Ekphrastic Poetry Display.  Each framed photograph is covered with a printout of a poem that describes the image it represents. The show is meant to begin the creative process and invoke images to the reader that are very different than that in the photograph.

Starr invites you to read, relax, and imagine. Do you see, what she sees?

Joanne Cyr has been painting since she was a teenager.  She finds much of her inspiration from the natural world and enjoys painting animals, people, and flowers.

She has studied under some wonderful teachers at Southington High School, Tunxis Community College and Paier College of Art.  These inspirational instructors include:  Ralph Grimaldi Jr., the late LeAnder Canady, Bill Thomson, John Falato and the late Sante Graziani.

Joanne and Starr invite the public to a reception Wednesday May 12 at 7:00 p.m. in the Cafe.

Go With the Spring Flow Yoga

In keeping with the spring energy flow of new things the Southington Public Library is offering a free yoga experience. Learn some yoga moves to energize and detoxify your body as we move forward through spring. Move through standing twists to detoxify and cleanse, as well as restorative postures to ground, center, and connect as this new season unfolds. Instructor Molly Virello is completing her final steps towards Yoga Teacher Certification. She fell into yoga as a way to get through her Master's program. Molly is a Children's Librarian at the Southington Public Library. misc_none 6:30 PM  -  8:30 PM Path to the Presidency series Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

The Path to the Presidency is a four-part, scholar-led book discussion series designed to stimulate lively discussion about America's political system as seen through our presidential elections.  The following books will be discussed:

March 14: Edward Larson's "A Magnificent Catastrophe: The Tumultuous Election of 1800, America's First Presidential Campaign". The presidential election of 1800 was so fraught with controvery that Thomas Jefferson called it "America's second revolution." This title should be available to borrow on Tuesday February 16th.

April 11: "1920: The Year of the Six Presidents," by David Pietrusza. In 1920 Wilson, Harding, Coolidge, Hoover, Teddy and Franklin Roosevelt were all in the race for the White House.
