Historical mysteries take us to distant places and times. In this series we will look at three modern British detectives attempting to solve crimes that occurred 40–50 years earlier.  Like Foyle’s War on public television, these books combine mystery with vivid accounts of the British homefront during World War II.

In a Dry Season (1999) – Peter Robinson

In a summer drought, the waters of Thornfield Reservoir become depleted, revealing the ruins of a small Yorkshire village at its bottom and the unidentified bones of a young woman. DCI Alan Banks must investigate life in the long-gone village of Hobb’s End in order to unmask a killer who has escaped detection for half a century.

misc_none 7:00 PM  -  8:00 PM Music in the Cafe Survivors Swing Band Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Remember when you listened, sang, and danced to the great old tunes of the 1920’s, 1930’s and 1940's?   Join us in the Café for a fun time as the “Survivors Swing Band” revive those memories for you and get your toes a-tapping and fingers snapping those recognizable tunes.

The “Survivors Swing Band”, a 7-piece professional jazz band, generates energy and excitement everywhere they perform. Together since 2011 “Survivors” has been playing the classic melodies, hot tunes and soothing ballads of the Swing Era, plus many of the wonderful melodies through the 50’s, throughout Connecticut.  The Big Bands played this music with a high degree of rigid orchestration.  The “Survivors” render it with a tilt towards improvisation, thus giving each pass at a tune somewhat of a new flavor while still keeping true to the original melodies.  Your memories of the "good old tunes" you hear will be readily revived!  With trumpet, Saxes, piano, guitar, bass, and drums, let the “Survivors” entertain you!

Registration is required, seating is limited. Please visit the library website southingtonlibrary.org and click on Calendar of Events or contact the Reference desk at 860.628.0947 x 5.

Ocean at the end of the Lane by Neil Gaiman

Sussex, England. A middle-aged man returns to his childhood home to attend a funeral. He is drawn to the farm at the end of the road, where, when he was seven, he encountered a most remarkable girl, Lettie Hempstock. He hasn't thought of Lettie in decades, and yet sitting by the pond (a pond that she'd claimed was an ocean), the unremembered past comes flooding back.

Copper on Copper Artwork by Halina Gorecki

July Artist of the Month

Fuse the ideas of art, travel and patriotism and some astounding results can be seen. During the month of July, the Southington Public Library will exhibit works by artist Halina Gorecki.  The large pieces of artwork are made of pressed pennies on a copper background. One piece is of the United States a second piece is the United States flag.  While travelling around the country for the last 15 years Gorecki saw a proliferation of penny press machines which elongate normal U.S. pennies into souvenirs.  She developed the idea to create the 'United Cents of America' to be representative of the tourist destinations where she made her penny souvenir.

Visit the Gallery at the Library while the exhibit is on display during the normal business hours of the library, Monday through Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Friday and Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  The Gallery is located on the main level near the Café.

Do you enjoy browsing through cookbooks and trying new recipes? Do you enjoy tasting new dishes? Then grab your apron and join Southington Library's new cookbook club!  Check out a Southington Library cookbook on August's topic, "Picnic Foods: Dishes to Make & Take," and then spend some time experimenting  with it. Come to the program on the date posted, ready to share a dish and discuss your experience. If your experiments yield disastrous results, please bring a donation for the Food Pantry and be prepared to share your tale of woe.

Participants are encouraged to go green – please bring your own plate, utensils, and serving spoon. Dishes should arrive ready to eat as there is no kitchen facility on hand. Please also bring 12 copies of your recipe to share. Everyone who attends will receive a binder to store their cookbook club recipes.
