misc_none 6:30 PM  -  8:30 PM Healthy Living Series Management of Severe Obesity Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Dr. Edward Hannoush, of Hospital of Central Connecticut will discuss severe obesity, the number one cause of poor health and preventable death in the United States.

Obesity means having too much body fat. It is different from being overweight, which means weighing too much. The weight may come from muscle, bone, fat, and/or body water. Both terms mean that a person's weight is greater than what's considered healthy for his or her height.

Obesity occurs over time when you eat more calories than you use. The balance between calories-in and calories-out differs for each person. Factors that might affect your weight include your genetic makeup, overeating, eating high-fat foods, and not being physically active.

Being obese increases your risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, arthritis, and some cancers. If you are obese, losing even 5 to 10 percent of your weight can delay or prevent some of these diseases. For example, that means losing 10 to 20 pounds if you weigh 200 pounds.

The Doctor will offer obesity prevention options the medical and surgical treatments available.

misc_none 7:00 PM  -  9:00 PM Southington Reads 2015 Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

The Southington Library is delighted to announce that Chris Bohjalian's highly acclaimed historical novel, The Sandcastle Girls, has been chosen as our 2015 Southington Reads book. The Sandcastle Girls tells the story of the Armenian genocide through the eyes of a survivor's descendant.

The Sandcastle Girls was named a Best Book of 2012 by the Washington Post, Library Journal, Kirkus Reviews, and BookPage. It was also an Oprah Book.

Here is what the critics had to say:
"Bohjalian powerfully narrates an intricately nuanced romance with a complicated historical event at the forefront. With the centennial of the Armenian genocide fast approaching, this is not to be missed. Simply astounding." -- Library Journal (starred review)

"Bohjalian succeeds in depicting the horror, without sentimentalizing it. . . He has fulfilled the duty of anyone seeking to document a genocide -- he ensures that we don't look away." -- The Boston Globe

"Dead-solid perfect. Bohjalian is a literary novelist unafraid to reference Proust's madeleine and expect readers to get it. But his books are also filled with artfully drawn characters and great, passionate storytelling. The Sandcastle Girls is all that, but different, more powerful." -- The Seattle Times

Chris Bohjalian will be speaking about The Sandcastle Girls at the Aqua Turf on the evening of Wednesday, March 25, 2015. Registration for this free program is required.  Please click on the register button below or contact the Reference/Information desk to save your seat. Copies of The Sandcastle Girls are available to borrow from the library.

misc_none 6:30 PM  -  8:30 PM Finding the Poet in You! Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

This two-session poetry workshop is designed as an introduction to the joyful abundance of poetry in our lives. Beginning with an introduction to famous poets and poems and to the tools utilized in the craft of writing, you'll learn how emotion is recreated on the page. Writing allows you to be whomever you want to be, absorb the world around you and turn it into poetry! So, be prepared to put on a lot of masks. You'll receive a packet of handouts illustrating best examples of the power of poetry. You will, of course, also have an opportunity to write and receive feedback on your own work. And, you are welcome to merely sit and listen and enjoy!

The workshop leader is Pat Mottola. She earned her M.S. in Art Education as well as an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Southern Connecticut State University, where she currently teaches Creative Writing. An award winning poet, her work has been published in numerous journals including War, Literature & the Arts, and Connecticut Review. In addition to SCSU, she teaches art and poetry to Senior Citizens. For the past twenty-five years she has been a passionate teacher of students from ages five to ninety-five. Pat has served as Keynote Speaker for the IMPAC-Young Writers Awards, and is a frequent judge for Connecticut High School Poetry Out Loud Competitions. Pat serves on the Board of Directors of the CT Poetry Society, and is editor of Connecticut River Review. misc_none 6:00 PM  -  8:00 PM Finding the Poet in You! Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Session two of a two-session poetry workshop is designed as an introduction to the joyful abundance of poetry in our lives.

She is most proud of her latest endeavor, mentoring Afghan women with the Afghan Women’s Writing Project. http://awwproject.org/
