misc_none 6:30 PM  -  8:00 PM Mindful Meditation for Adults Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Bill Lynch, a meditation leader who has trained at Vipassana Meditation Center in Shelburne Massachusetts returns to introduce patrons to the benefits of Mindful Meditation.

Registration is required for this free program.  Click the register button below or contact the Reference/Information Department at 860-628-0947 x 5.

Please wear comfortable clothing and footwear and bring a yoga mat or thick towel for your use.

Some 30 minutes of meditation daily may improve symptoms of anxiety and depression, a new Johns Hopkins analysis of previously published research suggests. Madhav Goyal, M.D., M.P.H., an assistant professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and leader of a study published online January 6 in JAMA Internal Medicine notes, meditation has a long history in Eastern traditions, and it has been growing in popularity over the last 30 years in Western culture. “A lot of people have this idea that meditation means sitting down and doing nothing,” Goyal says. “But that's not true. Meditation is an active training of the mind to increase awareness, and different meditation programs approach this in different ways.”

Celebrate Native American Month with the vibrant soundscape of Native North America from the “heartbeat” of intertribal drums and “warble” of Native flutes to contemporary rock, hip-hop, and electronic music with Craig Harris.  Drawing on more than one hundred interviews with musicians, producers, ethnographers, and record-label owners, author, photographer, and musician Harris conjures an aural tapestry in which powwow drums and end-blown woodwinds resound alongside operatic and symphonic strains and Native infused rock, jazz, reggae, country music, blues, hip-hip, and electronic dance musicas he gets the audience involved in his Drum Away the Blues program.   A skilled hand drummer, he's appeared in concert and/or on recordings with Rod MacDonald, C.J. Chenier & His Red Hot Louisiana Zydeco Band, and is currently  a member of  the Standing Bear Jam Band and the Gaea Star Band. Possessing a Master’s in education, Harris taught music in public and charter schools for a quarter of a century before launching his multicultural, participatory, and fun-for-all-ages Drum Away the Blues program in 2009.
