Learning to write is one of the most important skills a child can learn!  Children have a natural enthusiasm for writing—as a way to express themselves. We will be working cooperatively on most projects with a lot of positive reinforcement.  The focus will be on creativity and not necessarily the mechanics of writing.

Are you looking for other yarn addicts? Look no further! Don't have a project in mind? Can't seem to finish that scarf for Grandma? Or are you a complete beginner with an itch to stitch? Bring your project in & be inspired; if you're a beginner, your local craft store can help you select a project & requisite supplies. There will be no formal instruction but 'knitwits' are a helpful bunch and love indoctrinating the uninitiated into the cult of knitting. Tea, helpful company & oodles of knitting books will be served.

Our selection this month is News of the World by Paulette Jiles.

In the aftermath of the Civil War, an aging itinerant news reader agrees to transport a young captive of the Kiowa back to her people in this exquisitely rendered, morally complex, multilayered novel of historical fiction from the author of Enemy Women that explores the boundaries of family, responsibility, honor, and trust. Publisher Description

In partnership with NHPBS, short films from Ken Burns’ and Lynn Novick’s PBS documentary The Vietnam War will be presented at the Milford Town Hall Banquet Room at 6:30 pm. This 28-minute video includes war stories told by an American journalist, an anti-war activist, an American author and combat soldier, a Vietnamese author and soldier of the North Vietnamese Army, hero mothers, a South Vietnamese refugee, an ARVN officer, and several U.S. Marines.

Our discussion is facilitated by Bill Donoghue, a Vietnam combat veteran who served as a Corpsman with Marine Combined Action Platoons 1-4-5 and 2-7-0 from 1970-71. These Marine infantry squads of 10 Marines and a Corpsman lived and operated constantly in and around rural villages while training Vietnamese Popular Force/Regional Force soldiers. Immersion in Vietnamese society enabled Bill to experience war daily from a villager's view.

This program in funded by a grant from the NH Humanities.

Please use the Milford Town Hall entrance on Middle Street and take the elevator to the 3rd floor.

Over the last two centuries, more than 200 hikers, climbers and backcountry skiers have died in New Hampshire's White Mountains. Due to oversights or poor decisions made by individuals, most of these deaths didn't have to happen. In Death in the White Mountains, author Julie Boardman studies past fatalities and identifies the mistakes that caused them in the hope that readers can all learn to survive in the mountains.

Our selection this month is The Aviator's Wife by Melanie Benjamin

Despite her own major achievements--she becomes the first licensed female glider pilot in the United States--Anne Morrow Lindbergh is viewed merely as Charles Lindbergh's wife. The fairy-tale life she once longed for will bring heartbreak and hardships, ultimately pushing her to reconcile her need for love and her desire for independence, and to embrace, at last, life's infinite possibilities for change and happiness. Certified Therapy Pets are a wonderful way to encourage emergent or reluctant readers to become more confident in their ability to read.  The use of Therapy Pets in hospitals, rehabilitation centers and nursing homes has been shown to decrease anxiety, lower blood pressure and promote relaxation; the same premise applies to children who are learning to read.

Our seleection this month is Dark Money: the Hidden History of the Billionaires Behind the Rise of the Radical Right by Jane Mayer.

Why is America living in an age of profound economic inequality? Why, despite the desperate need to address climate change, have even modest environmental efforts been defeated again and again? Why have protections for employees been decimated? Why do hedge-fund billionaires pay a far lower tax rate than middle-class workers?

Learning to write is one of the most important skills a child can learn!  Children have a natural enthusiasm for writing—as a way to express themselves. We will be working cooperatively on most projects with a lot of positive reinforcement.  The focus will be on creativity and not necessarily the mechanics of writing.

Jordan Marsh opened its first store in 1851 on Milk Street in Boston selling assorted dry goods. Following the Civil War, the store moved to Winthrop Square and later to Washington Street between Summer and Avon Streets. The new five-story building, designed by Winslow & Wetherell, unveiled the novel concept of department shopping under one roof. It attracted shoppers by offering personal service with the adage that the customer is always right, easy credit, art exhibitions and musical performances. By the 1970s, it had become a regional New England icon and the largest department store chain in the nation. Author and historian Anthony Sammarco reveals the fascinating history of Boston's beloved Jordan Marsh.

Cindy Ross' story begins in the Rocky Mountain wilderness on a unique and extraordinary journey: two parents leading their young children 3,100 miles on the backs of llamas. This Canada-Mexico trek illustrated to Cindy and her husband what experiential education can do. Inspired by the experience, they went on to create a new way of supplementing their children’s education, focusing on two arenas for learning: the natural world and travel.

In this age of world connection, it is important to raise broad-minded and empathetic children who are knowledgeable about other cultures. To accomplish this goal, Cindy chose an unorthodox approach: she orchestrated learning opportunities for her children, Sierra and Bryce, in twelve countries. The family traveled the world, moving about on foot and bicycle, living simply and intimately. But just as important, and more accessible for many parents, were the opportunities for learning closer to home.

Cindy Ross will be here to talk about her new book and will have copies available for purchase and signing.

Learning to write is one of the most important skills a child can learn!  Children have a natural enthusiasm for writing—as a way to express themselves. We will be working cooperatively on most projects with a lot of positive reinforcement.  The focus will be on creativity and not necessarily the mechanics of writing.

Our selection for discussion this month and continuing on December 19 is Lindbergh by A. Scott Berg.

National Book Award winner A. Scott Berg is the first and only writer to have been given unrestricted access to the massive Lindbergh archives - more than two thousand boxes of personal papers, including reams of unpublished letters and diaries - and to be allowed freely to interview Lindbergh's friends, colleagues, and family members, including his children and his widow, Anne Morrow Lindbergh. The result is a biography that clarifies a life long blurred by myth and half-truth.

Book Clubs are a great place to make new friends while engaging in activities that are geared toward establishing a love of reading.  Come talk about books, play a game or make a fun project while enjoying a snack.

Tonight we will be taking part in a special Holiday edition of the Book Club.  This party is only for children who have been participating in Book Clubs this fall, though new readers are welcome to join us again in January.

Learning to write is one of the most important skills a child can learn!  Children have a natural enthusiasm for writing—as a way to express themselves. We will be working cooperatively on most projects with a lot of positive reinforcement.  The focus will be on creativity and not necessarily the mechanics of writing.

This month  we continue our discussion of Lindbergh by A.

Our selection this month is David Copperfield by Charles Dickkens.

The eighth novel of Charles Dickens, which was first published serially between May 1849 and November 1850, “David Copperfield,” is viewed as one of the most autobiographical of all the author’s novels. A classic coming-of-age story, it is the tale of its titular character from childhood to maturity which chronicles the struggle between the emotional and moral aspects of his life. Central to the theme of the novel is the idea of the disciplined heart. Dickens suggests that people basically fall into three categories: those who have one, those who don’t, and those who seek to cultivate one.   Publisher Description

Tax-Aide volunteers (IRS Certified) are trained to assist with filing the 1040 Form and the more standard of the schedules, including Schedules A and B. Kate Chadbourne is an award-winning songwriter and poet, a scholar and teacher of Irish language and folklore with a PhD from Harvard, and a beloved performer at venues throughout New England. She has been honored as a “tradition bearer” in the Revels Salon series and in the Gaelic Roots Concert Series at Boston College, and her music has been featured on NPR’s programs, “Cartalk” and “All Songs Considered.” She has released four solo CD’s, three collections of poetry, and has collaborated on recordings and live performances with Tim Janis, Lauren Passarelli, The Chanticleers, The Celtic Kates, and many others. Kate’s newest CD is Songs of the Poets, a gathering of beloved poems she set to music for voice, piano, and harp. Named as one of “The Most Fascinating People” in Central Massachusetts by the Sentinel and Enterprise Newspaper, Kate is also the founder of The Bardic Academy, a school for great-hearted people learning and growing at the crossroads of art and magic. She brings to her audiences the sounds of the harp, piano, tin whistle, Irish flute, and melodeon, a deep love and knowledge of traditional Irish story, a warm and welcoming presence, and a voice often described as “the voice of an angel.”
