    Contact: Miss Trina   249-0645   tmclenon@wadleighlibrary.org

Read to a DOG? Not just any dog....

Certified Therapy Pets are a wonderful way to encourage reluctant readers and children having difficulties with reading to become more confident in their ability to read. The use of Therapy Pets in hospitals, rehabilitation centers and nursing homes has been shown to decrease anxiety, lower blood pressure and promote relaxation; the same premise applies to children with reading difficulties.

For those children who cannot yet read on their own, parents & caregivers are invited to read with their children. In order to guarantee your spot, you must register for each session.

Registered children should arrive during the advertised time span and will read to the dog of their choice for approximately 15-20 mins.

Check our online calendar for upcoming dates & times.

NOTE: This is the last PAWS session until sachool begins again in the fall.

Dan Szczesny is a long-time journalist and author living in New Hampshire.

The Adventures of Buffalo and Tough Cookie is an exploration of one of New Hampshire’s least known mountain lists, the 52 With a View. It’s a hiking story unlike any other, as Dan takes on the task of turning a determined, urban elementary child into an experienced back-woods hiker, and in the process finds that sometimes the most important lessons are the ones that she teaches him.

Through snow, storms, slugs and long miles over the state’s beautiful and challenging terrain, The Adventures of Buffalo and Tough Cookie is a journey and meditation on the transformative power of friendship, commitment and the meaning of family.

The Troubadours sang of it; courtly knights quested for it; Monty Python laughed at it. The Chalice beckons through the mists of pre-history to bind us in its intrigue still. Our fascination with this symbol is alive and well in New Hampshire. In this talk and retelling by Diana Durham we get to understand why the young knight Perceval’s quest for the grail has as much meaning today as when the story was first told centuries ago. Humour and the rich symbolism of the Middle Ages combine as willing audience members act out a scene from a new dramatic retelling, becoming King Arthur, Merlin, the Grieving Maiden, and other characters as we mix storytelling, acting and discussion.

Diana Durham is a New Hamshire Humanities Scholar with an M.A. from University College of London (U.K.) and author of the book The Return of King Arthur: Completing the Quest for Wholeness and two books of poetry, Sea of Glass and To the End of the Night.

This program is funded by a grant from the New Hampshire Humanities Council.

This program will be presented at the Milford Town Hall Banquet Room. Use the Middle Street entrance next to the old ambulance bays.

Our selection for this month is Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah

Meredith and Nina Whitson are as different as sisters can be. One stayed at home to raise her children and manage the family apple orchard; the other followed a dream and traveled the world to become a famous photojournalist. But when their beloved father fails ill, Meredith and Nina find themselves together again, standing alongside their cold, disapproving mother, Anya, who even now offers no comfort to her daughters.

Our selection this month is In the Garden of Beasts: love, terror, and an American family in Hitler's Berlin by Erik Larsen.

The Dodd family moves to Berlin when William Dodd is appointed ambassador to Berlin. Suffused with the tense atmosphere of the  times in 1933 Berlin, and with unforgettable portraits of the bizarre Goring and the unexpectedly charming--yet wholly sinister--Goebbels, In the Garden ofBeasts lends a stunning, eyewitness perspective on events as they unfold in real time, revealing an era of surprising nuance and complexity.

Tax-Aide volunteers (IRS Certified) are trained to assist with filing the 1040 Form and the more standard of the schedules, including Schedules A and B. Electronic filing (e-filing) is offered at the Wadleigh Memorial Library site, with no charge to the taxpayer. E-filing ensures more accurate tax returns and faster processing of tax refunds.
