misc_none 7:00 PM  -  8:30 PM LAWRENCE LESSIG: WE THE PEOPLE CAN END THE CORPORATE CORRUPTION OF CONGRESS Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Michelle Sampson     director@wadleighlibrary.org

We are honored to welcome Harvard Law Professor and one of Scientific American’s Top 50 Visionaries, Lawrence Lessig, as he deconstructs one of the primary concerns of voters across the political spectrum:  the corporate corruption of Congress.  Lessig details in his latest book, USA is Lesterland, the large majority of campaign donations to political candidates come from a very tiny percentage of citizens -- a percentage approximately equal to the number of people named “Lester” in the United States.  He persuasively illustrates how a small number of people actually decide what happens in this country—and what doesn’t.  His two most recent TED talks focused on this subject and have been collectively downloaded over 1.2 million times.

Professor Lessig's presentation has been described as “blistering…with rapid-fire visuals” in showing “how the funding process weakens the Republic in the most fundamental way, and issues a rallying bipartisan cry that will resonate with many….”  We hope you will be able to join us for this very special evening with one of the greatest minds of our time.  Professor Lessig will follow his talk with a book signing.  Toadstool Books will have copies of USA is Lesterland and Republic, Lost for sale on site.

PLEASE NOTE: this event will be held at the Amato Center for the Performing Arts, 56 Mont Vernon Road in Milford and is FREE and open to all.  There will be no tickets or RSVPs.  The theatre seats approximately 400 people; seating will be first come, first serve.

Lawrence Lessig is the Roy L. Furman Professor of Law and Leadership at Harvard Law School, director of the Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics at Harvard University, and founder of Rootstrikers and NH Rebellion, both networks of activists leading the fight against government corruption.  In addition to USA is Lesterland, he has authored numerous books including Republic, Lost: How Money Corrupts Our Congress—and a Plan to Stop It, Code and other Laws of Cyberspace; Free Culture; and Remix.

Lessig serves on the Boards of Creative Commons, AXA Research Fund and iCommons.org, and on the Advisory Boards of the Sunlight Foundation, the Better Future Project, and Democracy Café. He is a Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Association, and has received numerous awards, including the Free Software Foundation’s Freedom Award, Fastcase 50 Award and being named one of Scientific American's Top 50 Visionaries.

Lessig holds a BA in economics and a BS in management from the University of Pennsylvania, an MA in philosophy from Cambridge, and a JD from Yale. As Professor at Stanford Law School, Lessig founded the school’s Center for Internet and Society. He clerked for Judge Richard Posner on the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals and Justice Antonin Scalia on the United States Supreme Court.

Want to have your child meet some interesting charcters?  They should open a book!  Want to have them meet some real-life characters, too? Then join our book club!  Book clubs are a great way to communicate with friends and meet new people while exploring and discussing good books.  What's more, membership in a book club can help children stay motivated to read if they otherwise have difficulty finding the time to pick up a book.  We often play games or make a creative project, and we always enjoy a yummy snack while having a fun time together!

For this first meeting students should bring a favorite book and be prepared to tell us why it's one of their favorites.  We will get to know each other a bit, share a snack and then I will introduce the assigned reading for our next meeting.  This club is for students in grades 4 and 5.  Please note that, in order to help me plan materials and snacks, you will need to register your child for each session that they can attend.  If s/he cannot attend this month, or at any other time, extra copies of the books can be found in the J Fic section of our library.

    Contact: Michelle Sampson     director@wadleighlibrary.org

Given the response to the first time we held this program in July, we are holding it again to accommodate those who were unable to attend.

Not in our town?  Think again.

We've all heard about it on the national news and read it in the papers: people of all ages and across all income levels are succumbing to the lure of a cheap high known as heroin. Its use has skyrocketed in recent years and communities across the country are struggling to stem the tide.  But Milford?  Nothing like that ever happens here, right?

Since December 2013, Milford has had 4 deaths and several near fatal overdoses due to heroin alone.  Please join us in welcoming back Sgt. Matthew Fiffield from the Milford Police Department as he presents a reprise of the program he led in July on the status of heroin and similar drugs (collectively known as opiates) in our community.  A new addition to the program will be Allen Peck of the Milford Ambulance Department; Peck will provide the paramedic's perspective from the front lines.

This program is free and open to all, but space is limited.  Parents, please use discretion if bringing a minor as some content may be graphic in nature.

    Contact: Susan Amann   249-0645   refdesk@wadleighlibrary.org

Making Sense of the American Civil War is a scholar–led series (part lecture, part discussion) that explores the Civil War as well as the economic and political culture of mid-19th century America from a variety of perspectives.  We will discuss eyewitness accounts by soldiers and military leaders, speeches by key decision makers, interpretive commentary by historians, and literary renderings of life on the ‘home front.’

The discussions will be facilitated by Dr. Denise Askin, Professor Emerita of St. Anselm College. Attendees will read the novel March by Geraldine Brooks, Crossroads of Freedom: Antietam by James McPherson, and selected readings from America’s War edited by Edward Ayers.

The series will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 1 and will continue at the same time on October 8, 15, and 29, 2014. In addition to the discussions there will be two film viewings: Friday October 3 at 2 p.m. to view the film Glory and Wednesday, October 22 at 6:30 p.m. to view the film Lincoln.

October 1 - Imagining War - the first session of the Civil war series, used fiction to enter the bewildering world of America during the Civil War. In the novel March, by Geraldine Brooks, Reverend March (the father of Little Women by Louisa May Alcott) leaves New England to minister to Union soldiers. His experiences threaten the very beliefs that led him into the war. Participants will compare the “real life” journal kept by Louisa May Alcott in a Civil War hospital, with Brooks’ imaginative exploration of horror and redemption in war time.

This program is free and open to the public. It is not necessary to attend all the meetings but registration is required in order to assure distribution of materials. To register call the library at 249-0645, or email refdesk@wadleighlibrary.org, or sign up on the online library calendar at www.wadleighlibrary.org. Copies of the books are available now at the Circulation Desk. A syllabus with reading assignments will be emailed to registrants.

"Choosing Sides"

“Choosing Sides,” the second session of the Civil War series, leads us into the period immediately preceding the Civil War. We will hear the voices of individuals caught in the political and moral storm: committed secessionists (Stephens), an escaped slave (Douglass), a conflicted Virginia military leader before the state’s secession (Lee), and the president (Lincoln) elected just as seven states had left the Union. Explosive issues, political deadlock, a polarized nation. Sound familiar? What can we learn from this glimpse into the days leading up to the Civil War?

Our seleection this month is The Dinner by Herman Koch.

"An internationally bestselling phenomenon: the darkly suspenseful, highly controversial tale of two families struggling to make the hardest decision of their lives -- all over the course of one meal....Tautly written, incredibly gripping, and told by an unforgettable narrator, The Dinner promises to be the topic of countless dinner party debates. Skewering everything from parenting values to pretentious menus to political convictions, this novel reveals the dark side of genteel society and asks what each of us would do in the face of unimaginable tragedy."

Copies are available at the Main Desk. Newcomers always welcome.

    Contact: Ken MacDonald

Peterborough author Ken MacDonald has recently published the world's first consumer-oriented book on wood pellet stoves, "The Pellet Stove Almanack: Home Heating Joins the 21st Century".

The author came to write his book through an unusual route. A software engineer by profession, he was dismayed to find when he went to purchase a pellet stove that very little practical information was available, and that much of the information seemed to be inaccurate or conflicting. After much research (online and on foot), and owning a pellet stove for several years, he decided to publish his findings so that other consumers would be aware of the many benefits, as well as occasional pitfalls, of this new technology.

Pellet stoves provide one of the most comfortable forms of heat for a home, as well as significant savings on heating bills, rapid payback of up-front costs, and are one of the environmentally "greenest" available options for home heating. Current users of cord-wood stoves are frequently surprised to find that they can save significantly on their overall annual heating costs, even when they have their own free wood supplies!

Ken will be at the Wadleigh Library in Milford, NH on Tuesday, October 14th at 6:30 PM to discuss his book and sign copies.

Read to a DOG? Not just any dog....

Certified Therapy Pets are a wonderful way to encourage reluctant readers and children having difficulties with reading to become more confident in their ability to read. The use of Therapy Pets in hospitals, rehabilitation centers and nursing homes has been shown to decrease anxiety, lower blood pressure and promote relaxation; the same premise applies to children with reading difficulties.

For those children who cannot yet read on their own, parents & caregivers are invited to read with their children. In order to guarantee your spot, you must register for each session.

Registered children should arrive during the advertised time span and will read to the dog of their choice for approximately 15-20 mins.

Check our online calendar for upcoming dates & times.

misc_none 7:30 PM  -  9:00 PM Acoustic Cafe presents Lui Collins Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Folk singer/songwriter Lui Collins has been performing, writing and recording for over 40 years, earning international acclaim for her music.   Her music ranges from original and traditional folk songs to bossa nova in the original Brazilian Portuguese.   She’s made 16 recordings of her own and has sung and played guitar or banjo on others’ projects as well.  She’s shared the stage with such folk-world notables as Tom Rush, Bonnie Raitt, Dave Van Ronk, Stan Rogers, John Gorka, and Anais Mitchell, and has recorded with Johnny Cunningham, David Darling, and Rani Arbo, among others.

Lui has been hailed by the Boston Herald as a “folksinger for our times” and by the Boston Globe as “one of New England’s first and brightest stars.” She was voted third most popular performer at the Champlain Valley Festival in 1992, along with Pete Seeger and French Canadian band La Bottine Souriante.  Renowned guitarist Dave van Ronk called her “one of the best guitarist-arrangers I have heard in years.” And Canadian folk icon Stan Rogers quipped, “Lui sings my songs better than I do.”

Besides her concerts, Collins is involved in teaching and early elementary music curriculum development. In 2003 she founded “Lui Collins’ Upside-Up Music” for families with young children.

"War, Freedom and Reconciliation"

How does a nation forge a path toward healing and unity after civil war? What can we learn from history in our own efforts to secure freedom and reconciliation on many fronts today? In this last session in the Civil War series, participants will have the opportunity to learn the complex issues surrounding emancipation: Lincoln’s evolving thinking about it, factors affecting the nation’s understanding of African Americans, steps taken by freed slaves to secure their place as citizens in the United States, and Lincoln’s task of reuniting a nation so deeply wounded by war and mistrust. Readings will be drawn from Walt Whitman’s Drum Taps, and from the Ayers anthology. We will pay special attention to Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address, considered by many to be “the greatest speech in American history” (Ayers).

Check our online calendar for upcoming dates & times.

classic-sounding duet was born. Add banjo picker/singer Bruce Stockwell, a 40-year bluegrass veteran and Merle Fest banjo contest winner, along with his wife, bassist Kelly Stockwell, and you’ve got some hot and spicy bluegrass chemistry!

misc_none 7:30 PM  -  9:00 PM Acoustic Cafe presents Off the Cuff Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Off The Cuff has been delighting audiences across southern New Hampshire and sorrounding areas for over a decade. Incorporating elements of jazz, swing, blues, bluegrass, rock, folk and world music styles, Off The Cuff infuses its own special blend of vocal and instrumental harmony into every song to reinvent it as something new and personal. Once this is done, the song is “Cuffed” – given that Off The Cuff touch.

Audiences love this music! Whether an original tune or an old standard, a pop tune or a nugget by some little known songwriter, the music touches a familiar chord in everyone, whether they grew up dancing to the big bands or to rock bands. It is music that each generation has managed to share; a part of the American musical soul. The music is upbeat, energetic and fun, and The Cuffers have a great time playing and interacting with the audience.

In October, 2008 Off The Cuff released its first CD, “Cuffed… At Last!” Recorded live at the Caleidh House in Westmoreland, NH, the CD contains 14 songs covering a broad range of styles that highlight the diversity and variety of an Off The Cuff performance.
