    Contact: Susan Amann   6032490645   refdesk@wadleighlibrary.org

Scams and frauds rob millions of Americans of their hard-earned money. AARP NH has in excess of 225,000 members, so it has the best opportunity to get out into the public with talks about how to deal with frauds and scams.  Americans 65 and older are more likely to be targeted and 34% more likely to lose money once targeted than those Americans in their 40s.  Every 3 seconds someone’s identity is stolen.  2015 data shows that 13.1 million Americans were victims of fraud, resulting in 15 billion dollars stolen.  Total identity fraud in the past 6 years is $112 billion, which is an average of $35,600 stolen per minute.  Staggering!  This AARP Top Frauds and Scams Presentation will tell how to identify frauds, how to avoid frauds, and what to do should you become a victim.  Norma Boyce has been with the AARP Fraud Watch speakers group since its inception in the spring of 2010, and has spoken to many various groups, large and small,  across Southern NH in that time.  Register today!

Read to a DOG? Not just any dog....

Certified Therapy Pets are a wonderful way to encourage reluctant readers and children having difficulties with reading to become more confident in their ability to read. The use of Therapy Pets in hospitals, rehabilitation centers and nursing homes has been shown to decrease anxiety, lower blood pressure and promote relaxation; the same premise applies to children with reading difficulties.

For those children who cannot yet read on their own, parents & caregivers are invited to read with their children.

Check our online calendar for upcoming dates & times.

No registration required.

In London covering the Blitz with Edward R. Murrow, Frankie Bard meets a Cape Cod doctor in a shelter and promises that she'll deliver a letter for him when she finally returns to the United States. Filled with stunning parallels to today's world, "The Postmistress" is a sweeping novel about the loss of innocence of two extraordinary women--and of two countries torn apart by war.

    Contact: Jason Clark   554-5338   jclarknh@gmail.com

If you want to see what you can make with a dismantled Keurig, come to the next Idea to Invention meeting on Thursday, September 14 (6:30 p.m.)

Join Jason Clark to explore 3D Printing, microcontroller programming (Arduino, Raspberry Pi), basic mechanical design, robotics and more.
Depending on interest, potential projects include creating an automatic plant watering unit, a mini robot arm, a line following robot, a ghost detector, or a metal detector. Learn to think like an inventor. For ages 10 and up.

Jason is a lifelong Milford resident with 20 years of experience in prototype design and fabrication.  His latest project is a device that can measure blood sugar without a blood sample!  His projects vary wildly...  from automated bird feeders to temperature measuring robots.  His favorite part of any day is helping someone to the "ah-ha" moment, the point when an idea clicks.

misc_none 3:00 PM  -  4:00 PM Yoga Nidra Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Jane Wilkins   603-494-9012

Yoga nidra is primarily meditation. It can be done in a chair or on a mat on the floor. It is a great way to relieve stress and  bring focus and clarity to our very busy minds. People should bring their own yoga mat, a pillow, and a blanket, and anything else they need to be comfortable. The body tends to cool down during this class. There will be a short stretching session at the beginning. Loose fitting comfortable clothing is appropriate. Jane suggests no one under 14 and that those under 17 should be with an adult. There are other methods to use for younger populations.

There are many things that yoga can be beneficial for, including hypertension, insomnia, headaches, arthritis, chronic pain, movement disorders, digestive issues, thyroid issues, endocrine disorders, respiratory conditions, palpitations, anxiety, depression, balance, posture, self confidence, and so much more. Therapeutic seated yoga is something anyone can do. Studies have shown that if a person closes his/her eyes and imagines they are doing the moves that they physically can't do, they will still benefit from it.

Join Jane Wilkins, certified therapeutic yoga instructor, for a one time, free class to find out how yoga nidra works for you.

Learning to write is one of the most important skills a child can learn!  Children have a natural enthusiasm for writing—as a way to express themselves. We will be working cooperatively on most projects with a lot of positive reinforcement.  The focus will be on creativity and not necessarily the mechanics of writing. For grades 1 & 2.

George Yeomans Pocock’s great-nephew, James Pocock, will speak about his personal memories of his great uncle, the development of the sport of rowing in America, and tell many rich stories that are omitted in the book.

Jim Pocock grew up in a family of racing shell builders that goes back four generations. His grandfather, Dick Pocock, built shells exclusively for Yale University for 40 years, and his great uncle, George Pocock, supplied every other college in America from his shop in Seattle. All together, these brothers built 21 Olympic gold medal winning boats, including every gold medal winning 8 oared shell from 1920 – 1956.

Jim is not a boat builder, but a minister, having served churches in Connecticut, California and Massachusetts. He now resides in Salem and serves as Counselor to the President at Gordon College in Wenham, MA.

This presentation will take place in the Banquet Hall in Town Hall. Please use the elevator.

Learning to write is one of the most important skills a child can learn!  Children have a natural enthusiasm for writing—as a way to express themselves. We will be working cooperatively on most projects with a lot of positive reinforcement.  The focus will be on creativity and not necessarily the mechanics of writing.

Our selection this month is Before the Fall by Noah Hawley.

On a foggy summer night, eleven people--ten privileged, one down-on-his-luck painter--depart Martha's Vineyard headed for New York. Sixteen minutes later, the  unthinkable happens: the passengers disappear into the ocean. The only survivors are Scott Burroughs-- the painter--and a four-year-old boy, who is now the last remaining member of a wealthy and powerful media mogul's family. ----Publisher Description

Learning to write is one of the most important skills a child can learn!  Children have a natural enthusiasm for writing—as a way to express themselves. We will be working cooperatively on most projects with a lot of positive reinforcement.  The focus will be on creativity and not necessarily the mechanics of writing.

Our selection this month is Freud's Mistress by Karen Mack.

Minna is everything Martha is not - intellectually curious, engaging and passionate. Minna and Frued embark on what is, at first, simply a meeting of the minds, but something deeper is brewing beneath the surface, an inevitable catastrophe that she cannot escape. In this sweeping tale of love, loyalty, and betrayal, fact and fiction meld seamlessly together.  ---Publisher Description

Learning to write is one of the most important skills a child can learn!  Children have a natural enthusiasm for writing—as a way to express themselves. We will be working cooperatively on most projects with a lot of positive reinforcement.  The focus will be on creativity and not necessarily the mechanics of writing.

Bring your project in & be inspired; if you're a beginner, your local craft store can help you select a project & requisite supplies. There will be no formal instruction but 'knitwits' are a helpful bunch and love indoctrinating the uninitiated into the cult of knitting. Tea, helpful company & oodles of knitting books will be served.

Tuesdays - 9:30am to 2:00pm
Thursdays - 3:30pm to 6:30pm

Since 1968, AARP Tax-Aide volunteers have helped nearly 50 million low- to middle-income taxpayers, many of whom are aged 60 or older. Tax-Aide volunteers (IRS Certified) are trained to assist with filing the 1040 Form and the more standard of the schedules, including Schedules A and B. Electronic filing (e-filing) is offered at the Wadleigh Memorial Library site, with no charge to the taxpayer. E-filing ensures more accurate tax returns and faster processing of tax refunds.
