Read to a DOG? Not just any dog....

Certified Therapy Pets are a wonderful way to encourage reluctant readers and children having difficulties with reading to become more confident in their ability to read. The use of Therapy Pets in hospitals, rehabilitation centers and nursing homes has been shown to decrease anxiety, lower blood pressure and promote relaxation; the same premise applies to children with reading difficulties.

For those children who cannot yet read on their own, parents & caregivers are invited to read with their children. In order to guarantee your spot, you must register for each session.

Registered children should arrive during the advertised time span and will read to the dog of their choice for approximately 15-20 mins.

Check our online calendar for upcoming dates & times.

Welcome to a new year of book groups!  This program is a fun way to have your children form new friendships while engaging in activities that are geared to promote a love of reading. For this first session, children should bring a favorite chapter book and be prepared to talk about why they like this story. We will be getting to know each other better while also enjoying some snacks, so please let me know if your child has any food allergies. The book that will be assigned for the next meeting will be introduced.

This group is for students in grades 2 and 3 only.  Please note that, in order to help me to plan materials and snacks,  you will need to register them for each session that they can attend. If you are unable to attend on this night, but plan to be here for the next meeting, extra books will be out in the J Fic area of the library located just outside of the Children's Room.

Our selection this month is Amoskeag: Life and Work in an American Factory-City by Tamara Hareven.

First published in 1978, this classic book, through vivid oral histories and historic photographs, documents the social and cultural impact of the industry during America' s rise as a manufacturing power. For nearly a century, the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company was chief architect of the social, ethnic, and economic existence of Manchester, New Hampshire. In the early 1900s, it was the largest textile mill in the world, employing 17,000; its red brick facade stretched for nearly a mile along the Merrimack River and its payroll drew immigrants by the thousands.    Amazon Editors

Copies are available at the Main Desk. Newcomers welcome.

This group is for students in grades 4 and 5 only.  Please note that, in order to help me to plan materials and snacks,  you will need to register them for each session that they can attend. If you are unable to attend on this night, but plan to be here for the next meeting, extra books will be out in the J Fic area of the library located just outside of the Children's Room.

The era of the Salem witch trials of 1692 is one of the most infamous, and least-understood, episodes in American history. Rory O’Brien, author of the novel Gallows Hill, lays out the story of what happened, separating fact from fiction.

Rory O’Brien, author, historian, and tour guide, will present this fascinating and seasonally topical program at the library, as well as have copies of his novel available to purchase afterward.

This program will be presented at the Milford Town Hall Banquet Room. Use the Middle Street entrance next to the old ambulance bays and take the elevator to the 3rd floor.

        There are many spaces available.

Check our online calendar for upcoming dates & times.

misc_none 7:30 PM  -  9:00 PM Acoustic Cafe presents Brendan Taaffe with special guest Mark Roberts Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Deeply versed in Irish and American traditions, it is on the mbira that Brendan Taaffe has found a truly distinctive voice, blending old-time ballads with traditional Zimbabwean rhythms. The ripple of the mbira, an instrument over a thousand years old, and Taaffe’s lush tenor casts old songs in a new light, creating “the kind of hushed, lonely warmth you experience sitting by a fire in a drafty house.”

A multi-instrumentalist on guitar, fiddle, banjo, and mbira, Brendan has toured with many different groups, including nationally acclaimed dance band Magic Foot and the internationally acclaimed vocal ensemble Northern Harmony. In addition to performing solo, he currently directs The Bright Wings Chorus, a vocal ensemble, and is the frontman of The New Line, a band that blends mbira with banjo, electric guitar, and percussion, creating a bridge between American and African traditions.

Originally from Minnesota, Brendan now lives in Brattleboro, Vermont and tours regularly throughout the U.S. and Europe. He will be joined by Mark Roberts on gourd banjo.

Doors Open @ 7 PM ~ Performance @ 7:30 PM ~ Admission is Free!

The Acoustic Café is a library-sponsored program showcasing regional acoustic musicians. Open to the public, it is held the 3rd Saturday from October thru April in a smoke-free intimate environment.

The Acoustic Café is also supported by the Friends of the Library. All proceeds from coffee and refreshment sales benefit the café and the library.

Our selection this month is The Guns of August by Barbara Tuchman.

"More dramtatic than fiction...THE GUNS OF AUGUST is a magnificent narrative--beautifully organized, elegantly phrased, skillfully paced and sustained....The product of painstaking and sophisticated research." CHICAGO TRIBUNE Historian and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Barbara Tuchman has brought to life again the people and events that led up to Worl War I. With attention to fascinating detail, and an intense knowledge of her subject and its characters, Ms. Tuchman reveals, for the first time, just how the war started, why, and why it could have been stopped but wasn't.              Publisher Description

Check our online calendar for upcoming dates & times.

misc_none 7:30 PM  -  9:00 PM Acoustic Cafe presents Sky Blue Boys Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

It’s a venerable tradition as old as American music itself…

Two fellows with a mandolin and guitar, a musical teamwork built of habit, their voices fused in the special blend produced by kinship. They were called “brothers duets,” and during the 1930s and ’40s it was the predominant format in country music, practiced by now-legendary teams of brothers on radio stations and stage shows throughout the countryside.

In Vermont, Dan and Willy Lindner, The Sky Blue Boys, have revived the tradition. Following the example of old-time duos such as The Blue Sky Boys, The Delmore Brothers and the Louvin Brothers they have built up a large repertoire of wonderful old ballads, parlor songs, heart songs and sacred numbers. Heeding their own musical instincts they have expanded the accompaniment to include a variety of acoustic instruments and added many newer songs including several of their own compositions.

Willy and Dan have played together for decades. They formed the celebrated Vermont bluegrass band Banjo Dan and the Mid-nite Plowboys in 1972 and have toured and recorded extensively in that context, as well as sitting in on shows and recording sessions for many of the region’s top acoustic musicians. But never far from their hearts were the sounds they learned to love long ago – the simple moving sounds of the early “brothers duets.”

It’s that clean, evocative sound The Sky Blue Boys now recreate for audiences throughout the Northeast… a reminder of things past, and of things constant.

Equally at home in the contemporary and traditional camps of the Folk world, he is a fine musician and storyteller. His prime instrument is the guitar, upon which he shines with intricate fingerstyle arrangements of anything from Tin Pan Alley tunes of the ’20s to fiddle tunes to his own music. He also plays concertina, piano, banjo, or sings acapella. He can be uproariously funny, contempletive, and powerfully emotional in the space of a few minutes. Not so much a singer-songwriter as a “singer-songfinder, Mike takes great delight in discovering the little-known hidden gems, polishing them with his own distinctive style, and bringing them to the light of day where they sparkle. The man will capture your attention, and then your heart.

Not only a performer, Mike is involved in presenting folk music as well. He is one of the prime movers of The Folk Project, New Jersey’s oldest and strongest folk music organization. For over two decades he has been chairman of that organization’s Minstrel Coffeehouse, one of the longest lived and most respected folk venues in the country.
