We are pleased to have Ray Rickman here tonight as he discusses slavery and how it positively affected the Rhode Island economy.

Ray Rickman is a former state representative from Providence’s College Hill area. He served as Rhode Island Deputy Secretary of State from 2000-2002. Ray Rickman is a rare book dealer and is considered a leader in the promotion of African American history. He conducts architectural and African American history tours in the Brown University area of Providence.

Ray will draw on his extensive knowledge of both Rhode Island history and African American history/culture to highlight the effect Slavery had on this state and how we are still dealing with these effects today.  He explains the economic basis of slavery and its African origins. He provides detailed information on how many Rhode Islanders were involved and how it elevated the entire economy of the state. Attention is paid to every aspect of the trade including manufacturing of “Negro” cloth and the building of slave ships with wood and material from every town in Rhode Island.

We invite you to join us!  Please sign up here.

misc_none 6:30 PM  -  8:00 PM Adult Summer Reading: The Little World Series in Attleboro   Download Event Info Tell a Friend

Join APL Adult Summer Reading for an All Ages evening with George Kelleher-Bianchi, who tells the history of when some Major League Players came to Attleboro for some "friendly" Attleboro/North Attleboro baseball games known as the Little World Series.

Between 1919 and 1923, Attleboro and North Attleboro staged over a dozen exhibition baseball games featuring scores of Major League ballplayers, including twenty future members of the Baseball Hall of Fame. These games gained national media attention, attracted players from every Major League franchise to travel to Attleboro, and transformed the area, for a few Saturdays in October, into the center of the baseball universe.

But what brought baseball legends like Babe Ruth, Walter Johnson, Rogers Hornsby, George Sisler, Grover Cleveland Alexander. and Eddie Collins to Attleboro starting in 1919? Why did they travel across the country at the end of long baseball seasons to play at Brady Field, Hayward Field, and Columbia Field? And why did the Little World Series suddenly end in 1923? To hear the answers, please join George Kelleher-Bianchi, a graduate of Attleboro High School, for an evening of local baseball history.

Please register here to let us know you're coming!

Tonight we'll be discussing New York Dead, the first Stone Barrington book by Stuart Woods.

Everyone is always telling Stone Barrington that he's too smart to be a cop, but it's pure luck that places him on the streets in the dead of night, just in time to witness the horrifying incident that turns his life inside out.

Suddenly he's on the front page of every New York newspaper, and his life is hopelessly entwined in the increasingly shocking life (and perhaps death) of Sasha Nijinsky, the country's hottest and most beautiful television anchorwoman.

No matter where he turns, the case is waiting for him, haunting his nights and turning his days into a living hell.

Tonight we'll be discussing The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith

After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Then John Bristow walks through his door with an amazing story: His sister, the legendary supermodel Lula Landry, known to her friends as the Cuckoo, famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man.

Detective Inspector Ruiz has no recollection of the firefight that landed him in the Thames, covered in his own blood and that of at least two other people. Accused of faking amnesia, Ruiz reaches out to psychologist Joe O'Loughlin to help him unearth his memory and clear his name.
