Youth age 13+ are welcome to join us for the teen book club! This month we will be discussing My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand.

The comical, fantastical, romantical, (not) entirely true story of Lady Jane Grey. In My Lady Jane, coauthors Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows have created a one-of-a-kind fantasy in the tradition of The Princess Bride, featuring a reluctant king, an even more reluctant queen, a noble steed, and only a passing resemblance to actual history—because sometimes history needs a little help.

Copies of the book will be available in the children's room at the end of December. Register here.

Our monthly book discussion led by Trish Ferrara. We will be reading V is for Vengeance by Sue Grafton. We'd love to have you join us!

Private detective Kinsey Millhone feels a bit out of place in Nordstrom’s lingerie department, but she’s entirely in her element when she puts a stop to a brazen shoplifting spree. For her trouble she nearly gets run over in the parking lot by one of the fleeing thieves—and later learns that the one who didn’t get away has been found dead in an apparent suicide. But Audrey Vance’s grieving fiancé suspects murder and hires Kinsey to investigate—in a case that will reveal a big story behind a small crime, and lead her into a web that connects a shadowy “private banker,” an angry trophy wife, a spoiled kid with a spiraling addiction, and a brutal killer without a conscience…

The APL has started a photography club for our tween and teen patrons in grades 5-12.  Have a middle or high schooler who loves to take photos and wants to learn how cameras work and develop their eye? Have them join our photography club! Run by local photographer/library LSTA grant consultant, Melissa Naclerio and teen librarian, Meghan Witherell, the photography club will learn to take photos with a variety of devices.  Youth are encouraged to bring their own device to use (cell phone camera, digital camera etc) and/or take turns using the photography club's DSLR camera.  Each session participants will learn new skills, practice and discuss photography with other youth!

Parents/legal guardians should note the following:
  1. Each youth will be asked to have a parent sign a photography release form for the library so that they may appear in photos taken during the sessions which may be used by the library in social media or other campaigns.  If you have signed up your child and would like to not have your child appear in photos please contact Mrs. Witherell at mwitherell@sailsinc.org
  2. Photography club may use the Balfour Riverwalk Park (the park next to the library) to take photos, for this reason parents will be asked to sign a permission form stating they are aware the club may venture in to the park during the session if weather permits.
  3. Youth should be mature enough to handle photography equipment with care.
  4. The APL is not responsible for the devices/cameras the youth bring to the session.  The youth who attend must be responsible enough to take care of their own items.
Space in the club is limited and registration is required to attend.  Please register here.

An opportunity to hear from two organizations – AHOPE RI and Refugee Immigration Ministry (RIM) in MA.

Americans Helping Others Prosper (AHOPE) is a volunteer based organization that was established to assist new Syrian and other refugees coming to Rhode Island with little to their name. We are dedicated to helping families integrate into American society. AHOPE is an entirely volunteer based organization. Our members range from students to professionals, all dedicated to helping develop prosperous Rhode Island communities.

"Building community with uprooted people to serve the common good," is the mission of Refugee Immigration Ministry (RIM). This faith-based organization was founded in 1986 and provides community-based support to individuals and families who have been uprooted by violence. Research has shown that when someone has lost everything, they hold on to their faith. RIM's faith-based approach builds collaboration between community faith groups in order to provide support to each client from his or her own faith.

Join us as we discuss Still Life by Louise Penney.

Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Sûreté du Québec and his team of investigators are called in to the scene of a suspicious death in a rural village south of Montréal and yet a world away. Jane Neal, a long-time resident of Three Pines, has been found dead in the woods. The locals are certain it’s a tragic hunting accident and nothing more but Gamache smells something foul this holiday season…and is soon certain that Jane died at the hands of someone much more sinister than a careless bowhunter.

The Spies, Lies, and Alibis mystery book club reads a different mystery/thriller title each month. New members are always welcome!

We invite you to join us! Let us know you're coming by signing up online here.

Kids of all ages (up to 14 years old) are invited to make an appointment to read to a certified therapy dog! Reading to a nonjudgmental, patient listener can give children the encouragement they need to improve their reading skills. The child’s confidence will grow in this relaxed environment.

Kids read in 20 minute increments and the only
requirement is that the child MUST be able to read (beginning readers are welcome).

This month we will be reading Leningrad : the Epic Siege of World War II, 1941-1944 by Anna Reid.

On September 8, 1941, eleven weeks after Hitler launched Operation Barbarossa, his brutal surprise attack on the Soviet Union, Leningrad was surrounded. The siege was not lifted for two and a half years, by which time some three quarters of a million Leningraders had died of starvation. Anna Reid's Leningrad is a gripping, authoritative narrative history of this dramatic moment in the twentieth century, interwoven with indelible personal accounts of daily siege life drawn from diarists on both sides.

In December 1937, the Japanese army invaded the ancient city of Nanking, systematically raping, torturing, and murdering more than 300,000 Chinese civilians. This book tells the story from three perspectives: of the Japanese soldiers who performed it, of the Chinese civilians who endured it, and of a group of Europeans and Americans who refused to abandon the city and were able to create a safety zone that saved many.
