Join us for a discussion of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Annie Barrows and Mary Ann Shaffer

January 1946: writer Juliet Ashton receives a letter from a stranger, a founding member of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. And so begins a remarkable tale of the island of Guernsey during the German occupation, and of a society as extraordinary as its name.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society—born as a spur-of-the-moment alibi when its members were discovered breaking curfew by the Germans occupying their island—boasts a charming, funny, deeply human cast of characters, from pig farmers to phrenologists, literature lovers all.

Like reading WWII Non Fiction? We invite you to join our WWII Non Fiction Book Club.

This month we will be reading  Brothers In Arms: The Epic Story of the 761st Tank Batallion, WWII's Forgotten Heroes by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

A powerful wartime saga in the bestselling tradition of Flags of Our Fathers, BROTHERS IN ARMS recounts the extraordinary story of the 761st "Black Panthers," the first all-black armored unit to see combat in World War II. The racism that shadowed them during the war and the prejudice they faced upon their return home is an indelible part of their story. What shines through most of all, however, are the lasting bonds that united them as soldiers and brothers, the bravery they exhibited on the battlefield, and the quiet dignity and patriotism that defined their lives.

New England Notebook: One Reporter, Six States, Uncommon Stories

An Evening with journalist and author Ted Reinstein

 __________________________________________________________________________

Ted Reinstein is a longtime, award-winning reporter for “Chronicle,” Boston’s celebrated—and the nation’s longest-running—nightly TV newsmagazine.  In June, 2013, Globe Pequot Press released his first book, a collection of Ted’s most memorable and favorite stories drawn from over fifteen years of reporting from every corner of New England.  His talk itself will run approx. 50-minutes and covers, as Ted puts it, “the best of the best—my all-time most favorite people and places in New England.”  The talk will be highlighted with photos, many the work of some of the region’s most talented and successful photographers, and all featured in the book.  Following the talk, Ted will take questions from the audience.  At the conclusion of the Q&A session, Ted’s books will be on sale, and he will be happy to personally sign copies.

To reserve a seat, call or register online at attleborolibrary.org/register  Sign-ups begin May 5.
