Like reading WWII Non Fiction? We invite you to join our WWII Non Fiction Book Club.

This month we will be reading  Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors: The Extraordinary World War II Story of the U.S. Navy's Finest Hour by James D. Hornfischer.

“This will be a fight against overwhelming odds from which survival cannot be expected. We will do what damage we can.”

With these words, Lieutenant Commander Robert W. Copeland addressed the crew of the destroyer escort USS Samuel B. Roberts on the morning of October 25, 1944, off the Philippine Island of Samar. On the horizon loomed the mightiest ships of the Japanese navy, a massive fleet that represented the last hope of a staggering empire. All that stood between it and Douglas MacArthur’s vulnerable invasion force were the Roberts and the other small ships of a tiny American flotilla poised to charge into history.

Like reading WWII Non Fiction? We invite you to join our WWII Non Fiction Book Club.

This month we will be reading  The Greatest Generation by Tom Brokaw. In this superb book, Tom Brokaw goes out into America, to tell through the stories of individual men and women the story of a generation, America's citizen heroes and heroines who came of age during the Great Depression and the Second World War and went on to build modern America. This generation was united not only by a common purpose, but also by common values--duty, honor, economy, courage, service, love of family and country, and, above all, responsibility for oneself. In this book, you will meet people whose everyday lives reveal how a generation persevered through war, and were trained by it, and then went on to create interesting and useful lives and the America we have today.

Did you love this year’s Big Read “A Wizard of Earthsea” by Ursula K. LeGuin? Would you like to read more fantasy and science fiction? How about joining the library’s newest book club? You will get a chance to vote on the book picks for the upcoming months, discuss the current book with other fantasy book-lovers, and best of all, be able to nerd out with the newest reference librarian Amy Rosa! How could you possibly resist joining us?

Tonight we will be discussing Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. "Under the streets of London there's a place most people could never even dream of. A city of monsters and saints, murderers and angels, knights in armour and pale girls in black velvet. This is the city of the people who have fallen between the cracks. Richard Mayhew, a young businessman, is going to find out more than enough about this other London."

Register by contacting Amy by email, or just read the book and come by. All are welcome!

Our monthly book discussion led by Trish Ferrara. We will be reading Rules of Civility by Amor Towles. We'd love to have you join us!

On the last night of 1937, twenty-five-year-old Katey Kontent is in a second-rate Greenwich Village jazz bar with her boardinghouse roommate stretching three dollars as far as it will go when Tinker Grey, a handsome banker with royal blue eyes and a tempered smile, happens to sit at the neighboring table. This chance encounter and its startling consequences propel Katey on a yearlong journey from a Wall Street secretarial pool toward the upper echelons of New York society and the executive suites of Condé Nast--rarefied environs where she will have little to rely upon other than a bracing wit and her own brand of cool nerve.

This month we will be reading 17 Carnations: The Royals, the Nazis, and the Biggest Cover-up in History by Andrew Morton. 17 CARNATIONS tells the story of the feckless Edward VIII, Duke of Windsor, and his wife Wallis Simpson, whose affair with Joachim von Ribbentrop embroiled the duke in a German plot to use him as a puppet king during their takeover of the British Empire. Although we know that the war ended with Hitler's defeat, Edward's story was far from over.

Our monthly book discussion led by Trish Ferrara. We will be reading Major Pettigrew's Last Stand by Helen Simonson. We'd love to have you join us!

You are about to travel to Edgecombe St. Mary, a small village in the English countryside filled with rolling hills, thatched cottages, and a cast of characters both hilariously original and as familiar as the members of your own family. Among them is Major Ernest Pettigrew (retired), the unlikely hero of Helen Simonson's wondrous debut. Wry, courtly, opinionated, and completely endearing, Major Pettigrew is one of the most indelible characters in contemporary fiction, and from the very first page of this remarkable novel he will steal your heart.

This is a very casual, social environment for parents who love to read. This month we'll be reading Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll.

Commonly shortened to Alice in Wonderland, this is an 1865 novel written by English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll. It tells of a girl named Alice falling through a rabbit hole into a fantasy world populated by peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures. The tale plays with logic and is considered to be one of the best examples of the literary nonsense genre. Its narrative course and structure, characters and imagery have been enormously influential in both popular culture and literature, especially in the fantasy genre.

Kids of all ages (up to 14 years old) are invited to make an appointment to read to a certified therapy dog! Reading to a nonjudgmental, patient listener can give children the encouragement they need to improve their reading skills. The child’s confidence will grow in this relaxed environment.

Kids read in 20 minute increments and the only
requirement is that the child MUST be able to read (beginning readers are welcome).

To register click here (soon). You will receive a confirmation e-mail once the registration is approved.

Preschool & Kindergarten

The Attleboro Public Library and Project Connect are teaming up to bring kids in preschool & kindergarten a monthly “Science Saturday” program.  We will be exploring STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) concepts and doing hands-on activities for some of our youngest patrons and their adults.  To make sure everyone stays safe and focused, we are asking that no younger siblings join us during this program.
