Our monthly book discussion led by Trish Ferrara. We will be reading The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. We'd love to have you join us!

In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.

An opportunity to hear from two organizations – AHOPE RI and Refugee Immigration Ministry (RIM) in MA.

Americans Helping Others Prosper (AHOPE) is a volunteer based organization that was established to assist new Syrian and other refugees coming to Rhode Island with little to their name. We are dedicated to helping families integrate into American society. AHOPE is an entirely volunteer based organization. Our members range from students to professionals, all dedicated to helping develop prosperous Rhode Island communities.

"Building community with uprooted people to serve the common good," is the mission of Refugee Immigration Ministry (RIM). This faith-based organization was founded in 1986 and provides community-based support to individuals and families who have been uprooted by violence. Research has shown that when someone has lost everything, they hold on to their faith. RIM's faith-based approach builds collaboration between community faith groups in order to provide support to each client from his or her own faith.

The library is once again teaming up with the Attleboro Area Bar Association for the return of our Ask A Lawyer Series! Practicing lawyers Deborah Blum-Shore and Austin McHoul will be giving a presentation and answering all of your estate planning questions. Starting with the answer to “what exactly IS estate planning?” this program will cover the most frequently asked questions and concerns raised by people of all ages as they plan to protect themselves, their families, and their assets. This session will cover the legal documents that allow us to protect against incapacity while we are living, and which express our wishes for what happens to our property when we are gone.  As a lead in to our March 23rd program on elder law, this program will also introduce the topic of the use of estate planning documents to plan for long term care.  Plenty of time will be set aside to answer YOUR pressing questions so write them down and come learn the answers.

The March 9th and March 23rd sessions each stand alone, but attendees can get the fullest experience by attending both. Please register here for each session you'll be attending.

A series of grisly murders is rocking the streets of nineteenth-century Boston. But these are no ordinary killings. Each is inspired by the hellish visions of Dante's Inferno. To end the bizarre and bloody spree, no ordinary detective will suffice. Enter the unlikely sleuths of the Dante Club: Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Oliver Wendell Holmes, James Russell Lowell, and J. T. Fields --- renowned scholars with the skills to decipher the devilish clues. But can this band of bookish gentlemen outwit a crafty killer? A terror-stricken city --- and their own lives --- depend on it.

Run by local photographer/library LSTA grant consultant, Melissa Naclerio and teen librarian, Meghan Witherell, the photography club will learn to take photos with a variety of devices.  Youth are encouraged to bring their own device to use (cell phone camera, digital camera etc) and/or take turns using the photography club's DSLR camera.  Each session participants will learn new skills, practice and discuss photography with other youth!

Parents/legal guardians should note the following:
1. Each youth will be asked to have a parent sign a photography release form for the library so that they may appear in photos taken during the sessions which may be used by the library on social media and other print materials etc. If you have signed up your child and would like to not have them appear in photos please contact Meghan Witherell at mwitherell@sailsinc.org

2. Photography club may use the Balfour Riverwalk Park (the park next to the library) to take photos, for this reason parents will be asked to sign a permission form stating they are aware the club may venture into the park during the sessions if weather permits.

3. The Attleboro Public Library is not responsible for cameras or other devices youth bring to the session.  Youth must be responsible enough to care for their own items during the club.

Space in the club is limited and registration is required to attend.  Please register here.

The library is once again teaming up with the Attleboro Area Bar Association for the return of our Ask A Lawyer Series! Practicing lawyers Deborah Blum-Shore and Austin McHoul will be giving a presentation and answering all of your elder law questions. Starting with the answer to “what exactly IS elder law?” this program will cover the most frequently asked questions and concerns raised by seniors and their families planning for current and future long term care needs. Topics include a review of the fundamental elements of every estate plan, what is probate and is it “good” or “bad,” how families can maximize their resources and protect their assets while obtaining the best health care services, and how/if gifting can be part of a long term care plan.  Plenty of time will be set aside to answer YOUR pressing questions so write them down and come learn the answers.

The March 9th and March 23rd sessions each stand alone, but attendees can get the fullest experience by attending both. Please register here for each session you'll be attending.

Riley Cavanaugh is many things: Punk rock. Snarky. Rebellious. And gender fluid. Some days Riley identifies as a boy, and others as a girl. The thing is…Riley isn’t exactly out yet. And between starting a new school and having a congressman father running for reelection in uber-conservative Orange County, the pressure—media and otherwise—is building up in Riley’s so-called “normal” life.

Join us for a book discussion of  In the Country We Love: My Family Divided, by Diane Guerrero.

In the Country We Love is a moving, heartbreaking story of one woman's extraordinary resilience in the face of the nightmarish struggles of undocumented residents in this country. There are over 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the US, many of whom have citizen children, whose lives here are just as precarious, and whose stories haven't been told. Written with Michelle Burford, this memoir is a tale of personal triumph that also casts a much-needed light on the fears that haunt the daily existence of families likes the author's and on a system that fails them over and over.

The Biography Book Group meets once a month, generally on the first Monday, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. We read biographies, memoirs, autobiographies, and travel narratives. A variety of themes will be explored throughout the year.

Tonight we'll be discussing The Hound of Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle.

Holmes and Watson are faced with their most terrifying case yet. The legend of the devil-beast that haunts the moors around the Baskerville family's home warns the descendants of that ancient clan never to venture out in those dark hours when the power of evil is exalted. Now, the most recent Baskerville, Sir Charles, is dead and the footprints of a giant hound have been found near his body. Will the new heir meet the same fate?

There she forms an unlikely bond with a free-spirited Australian girl, a born adventurer who spurs Rachel on to a yearlong odyssey that takes her to three continents, fills her life with newfound friends, and gives birth to a previously unrealized passion for adventure.

On September 8, 1941, eleven weeks after Hitler launched Operation Barbarossa, his brutal surprise attack on the Soviet Union, Leningrad was surrounded. The siege was not lifted for two and a half years, by which time some three quarters of a million Leningraders had died of starvation. Anna Reid's Leningrad is a gripping, authoritative narrative history of this dramatic moment in the twentieth century, interwoven with indelible personal accounts of daily siege life drawn from diarists on both sides.

Tonight we'll be discussing The Blessing Way by Tony Hillerman.

Homicide is always an abomination, but there is something exceptionally disturbing about the victim discovered in a high lonely place, a corpse with a mouth full of sand, abandoned at a crime scene seemingly devoid of tracks or useful clues. Though it goes against his better judgment, Navajo Tribal Police Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn cannot help but suspect the hand of a supernatural killer.

This month we will be reading The Taste of War: World War II and the Battle for Food by Elizabeth Collingham.

Tracing the interaction between food and strategy, on both the military and home fronts, this title demonstrates how the issue of access to food was a driving force within Nazi policy and contributed to the decision to murder hundreds of thousands of 'useless eaters' in Europe.

Tonight we'll be discussing The Godwulf Manuscript by Robert B. Parker.

The first in the series featuring private detective Spenser, sees Spenser hired to return a rare stolen fourteenth-century manuscript to its rightful owners, a Boston university who has hired him. Spenser earned his degree in the school of hard knocks so he is hardly surprised that his only clue is a radical student with four bullets in his chest.

Based on exhaustive research and never-before-seen diaries and letters of the saboteurs, The Winter Fortress is a compulsively readable narrative about a group of young men who endured soul-crushing setbacks and Gestapo hunts and survived in one of the coldest, most inhospitable places on earth to save the world from destruction.

Tonight we'll be discussing The Enemy by Lee Child.

Jack Reacher. Hero. Loner. Soldier. Soldier’s son. An elite military cop, he was one of the army’s brightest stars. But in every cop’s life there is a turning point. One case. One messy, tangled case that can shatter a career. Turn a lawman into a renegade. And make him question words like honor, valor, and duty. For Jack Reacher, this is that case.

This month we will be reading The Rape of Nanking: the Forgotten Holocaust of WWII by Iris Chang.

In December 1937, the Japanese army invaded the ancient city of Nanking, systematically raping, torturing, and murdering more than 300,000 Chinese civilians. This book tells the story from three perspectives: of the Japanese soldiers who performed it, of the Chinese civilians who endured it, and of a group of Europeans and Americans who refused to abandon the city and were able to create a safety zone that saved many.

This month we will be reading MacArthur at War: World War II in the Pacific by Walter Borneman.

World War II changed the course of history. Douglas MacArthur changed the course of World War II. MacArthur at War will go deeper into this transformative period of his life than previous biographies, drilling into the military strategy that Walter R. Borneman is so skilled at conveying, and exploring how personality and ego translate into military successes and failures.

Tonight we'll be discussing The Neon Rain by James Lee Burke.

Detective Dave Robicheaux has fought too many battles: in Vietnam, with killers and hustlers, with police brass, and with the bottle. Lost without his wife’s love, Robicheaux’s haunted soul mirrors the intensity and dusky mystery of New Orleans’ French Quarter — the place he calls home, and the place that nearly destroys him when he becomes involved in the case of a young prostitute whose body is found in a bayou. Thrust into the world of drug lords and arms smugglers, Robicheaux must face down a subterranean criminal world and come to terms with his own bruised heart in order to survive.
