This year Attleboro will be reading Dinaw Mengestu’s The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears. In this novel, the author describes the pain of exile, when one is violently uprooted from his or her homeland.  Having fled the Ethiopian Red Terror of the late 1970s to live and work in Washington, DC. Sepha Stephanos is acutely aware of the loneliness, sadness, and dislocation that accompany his pursuit to find a quiet refuge from the ghosts of his old life.

In response to the novel’s theme of struggling with how to live with and maintain memories, the Attleboro Arts Museum will mount an invitational exhibition of portraits that have been created by an artist’s memory-- without the aid of a model or photograph to serve as a guide.  All media will be exhibited, from paint on canvas to installation.  The installation is entitled, Distinguishing Features.

This is a very casual, social environment for parents who love to read. Tonight we are celebrating our 10th Anniversary by discussing Attleboro's Big Read title: The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears. The themes of identity, belonging and creating a family out of friends with common circumstances resonates with our group. This book promises a walk down memory lane, both as the story takes us on the journey of the main character and as we look at our own journeys through parenthood.

Coach Ed from the YMCA will lead the walk.  Director Carleton Legg, from the Attleboro Area Industrial Museum will accompany the walk and host at the Museum.

The Literacy Center and the Attleboro Area Council of Churches will partner to present a panel discussion, inspired by Attleboro's 2016 Big Read book, “The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears”. Panelists will relate their personal experiences of coming to America to seek economic or educational opportunity for themselves and their families or to seek safety and security from conflict in their home countries. Each individual has a unique story of why they left and what they experienced in settling in this area.  This forum is a place to share their stories with the Attleboro community.

Panelists will address their expectations of their American experience vs. what actually has happened, as well as their assimilation into the community vs. isolation. We will also hear about what part of their American experience has surprised each individual the most.

Tonight we'll be discussing The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith

After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Then John Bristow walks through his door with an amazing story: His sister, the legendary supermodel Lula Landry, known to her friends as the Cuckoo, famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man.

Detective Inspector Ruiz has no recollection of the firefight that landed him in the Thames, covered in his own blood and that of at least two other people. Accused of faking amnesia, Ruiz reaches out to psychologist Joe O'Loughlin to help him unearth his memory and clear his name.

"Finding Home: Universal Themes and Personal Reflections:" a panel discussion based on "The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears."  With Shawn Christian, Associate Provost, Associate Professor of English and African American Studies at Wheaton College, Carrie Bridges-Feliz, Director of Lifespan Community Health Institute in Providence, RI and others tbd.

Dinaw Mengestu's novel calls us to consider the experience of displacement, of forging an identity and re-imagining a future while living between two worlds.  It is not just a "tale of two cities," Washington D. C. and Addis Ababa, but an exploration of memory and forgetting, hope and loss, choice vs. circumstance, and of what it means for an immigrant to become an American today.

May it lead us to examine what we can do to positively reshape our communities and welcome the inevitable process of change.  Event sponsored by Community VNA.  Discussion will be held in the Community Room of the agency at 10 Emory St. in Attleboro.

APL Writers Group‘s memoir series “A Glimpse Into A Life” will present in collaboration with Attleboro's Big Read, “A Story To Be Told”.

Each one has hidden inside the shadows of memories a story to be told: the stories of struggles and triumphs. Each holds its message waiting to be heard.  These are the stories that make us who we are.  They are the very elements that shape our character.  Writers will be inspired and empowered to search those shadows for their "story to be told".

Preschool & Kindergarten

The Attleboro Public Library and Project Connect are teaming up to bring kids in preschool & kindergarten a monthly “Science Saturday” program.  We will be exploring STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) concepts and doing hands-on activities for some of our youngest patrons and their adults.  To make sure everyone stays safe and focused, we are asking that no younger siblings join us during this program.

To register, click here (soon).

Did you know art has many stimulating effects on the mind and body? Come relax and find out the benefits of art at our SMILE through Art workshops designed specifically for those living with Parkinson’s disease.

We will explore different methods of art that will teach us how to strengthen fine muscle movements and combat symptoms of Parkinson’s such as stiffness, rigidity of limbs, micrographia, and depression.

The Smile Through Art Workshop will provide the positive benefits of creativity while allowing us to connect with others in a positive environment.

Workshops are designed to be consecutive sessions. Participants are encouraged to attend all workshops. This workshop will be held once a month from September 10, 2016 through January 7, 2017. Registration is required. Please call or email for details!
