Again this year, members of the Writers Workshop at the Senior Center will participate in The Big Read. Some plan to use the Japanese style of poetry known as haiku. A challenge for any poet, this method should lend itself well to the subject matter of "When the Emperor was Divine". Haiku consists of three lines, the first of five syllables, the second of seven, and the third of five. Others will write about certain characters of the theme in general. The recording session with DoubleACS will take place on September 9th.

The 2014 Big Read title, When the Emperor Was Divine, will give our Parents Book Club much to discuss. How does a parent manage when families are separated? How does a family work together during times of crisis? What keeps a family together when everything surrounding them is falling apart? After you bring the kids to story time, is there still time for YOU to read? Join other parents trying to carve out time to read grown up books. The Parents Book Club meets year round on the fourth Wednesday of the month. All are welcome to join! To be sure to get the latest information on what the book club is up to, please ask a library staff member to add your name to our email list or join our facebook group. To get more information, contact Amy Rhilinger, Assistant Director at arhilinger@sailsinc.org or call 508-222-0157.

The Big Read Writers Workshop will embark on a mission to provide a community forum for "When the Emperor Was Divine" by Julie Otsuka. The historical novel evokes a humanistic look at the displacement and cultural ramifications endured by the American Japanese during World War II. The workshop sessions will endeavor to provide literary and cultural paradigm from different perspectives. The elements of cultural identity and displacement will serve as book discussions and the writing of a key event in one’s life. Writing strategies and skills are to be presented in an easy format for the creation of the KEY Event. The workshop goal is to bring out the passionate writer within all of us with the extraordinary storytelling of Julie Otsuka.

Kids of all ages (up to 14 years old) are invited to make an appointment to read to a certified therapy dog! Reading to a nonjudgmental, patient listener can give children the encouragement they need to improve their reading skills. The child’s confidence will grow in this relaxed environment.

Kids read in 20 minute increments and the only
requirement is that the child MUST be able to read (beginning readers are welcome). To make an appointment for your child, call the Children’s Room or email Mrs. Brown.

This month, the Wednesday Morning Book Group will be discussing this year's Big Read, When the Emperor Was Divine. It is a marvelous, slim novel that paints the harshness of the Japanese internment camps of World War II with the delicate brushstrokes of a Japanese watercolor. The novel concerns a single California family's experiences from the time they are asked to pack up and report for relocation through their haunted return home. The narrative is an accumulation of quiet details that softly build up an indictment of the camps and the attitudes that led to them. Please join us at the APL for a lively discussion of this compelling book.

Brown.

Cost:  $10 per child or $25 per family.  Registration required.  Space is limited.  Proceeds to benefit the renovation of the Children's Room.
