“Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War,” a national traveling exhibition which focuses on Abraham Lincoln’s struggle to meet the constitutional challenges of the Civil War, opens at the Edison Main Library, 340 Plainfield Avenue on May 15 through June 20.

Abraham Lincoln was elected the sixteenth President of the United States in 1860, at a time when the nation was falling apart. By the time he took the oath of office, seven states had already seceded from the Union. The exhibition vividly evokes Lincoln’s struggle to resolve the basic questions that divided Americans at the most perilous moment in the nation’s history: Was the United States truly one nation, or was it a confederacy of sovereign and separate states? How could a country founded on the belief that “all men are created equal” tolerate slavery? In a national crisis, would civil liberties be secure?

The National Constitution Center and the American Library Association Public Programs Office organized the exhibit with the help of a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH): great ideas brought to life. The traveling exhibition is based on an exhibition of the same name developed by the National Constitution Center.

The Edison Library is offering free programs and a free exhibit for the public. This exhibit was obtained through a grant from the ALA.

In town, the people suffer, powerless, from the regime of terror imposed by the Jihadists determined to control their faith. Music, laughter, cigarettes, even soccer have been banned. The women have become shadows but resist with dignity. Every day, the new improvised courts issue tragic and absurd sentences. In Israel there is neither civil marriage nor civil divorce. Only rabbis can legitimate a marriage or its dissolution. But this dissolution is only possible with full consent from the husband, who in the end has more power than the judges. Viviane Amsalem has been applying for divorce for three years. But her husband Elisha will not agree. His cold intransigence, Viviane's determination to fight for her freedom, and the ambiguous role of the judges shape a procedure in which tragedy vies with absurdity, and everything is brought out for judgment, apart from the initial request.

Is lasting peace and happiness not what all of us are seeking? Are not all our endeavors meant to bring us happiness and lasting peace. Yet why have we not found them? Is it really possible to achieve a level of peace and happiness that nothing or no-one can take away from us? The answers to these questions can help us realize that lasting peace cannot be found in the outer world in which we live, but found within.

Come learn how the regular practice of a simple technique of spiritual meditation (explained and practiced during the session) can help us to achieve a lasting state of peace and happiness found through no outer experience. Join Jim Rose, M Ed Rutgers University, who has been meditating for over 30 years for this powerful workshop.
