Calliope Poetry Book Group to Present Discussion on “Common Threads & You”

The Calliope Poetry Book Group will present a discussion of the poems of Seamus Heaney, Denise Levertov, and five other Massachusetts poets included in this year’s Common Threads, the annual publication and outreach project sponsored by the non-profit Mass Poetry. This discussion, open to the community, “Common Threads & You,” will include several videos of the poets reading their work.  The event is free and light refreshments will be provided.

The “Common Threads & You” discussion will be a wonderful, accessible way for even those who think they don’t like poetry to discover how a poem can deepen our lives,” says book group founder Alice Kociemba of East Falmouth, who edited this year’s edition of Common Threads. “Many people view poetry in the same way they view jazz, as something inaccessible and difficult to understand. But, just like in jazz, poetry covers a broad range of expression and emotion. You just have to find something that speaks to you—and the Common Threads poems were assembled with that in mind.”

Published annually, Common Threads assembles 7 to 10 poems that relate to a general theme and were written by poets that at one point lived in Massachusetts. This year’s edition explores “threshold moments” and includes poems by Heaney (“St. Kevin and the Blackbird”), Levertov (“O Taste and See”), former poet laureate Natasha Trethewey (“Incident”), Susan Donnelly (“Chanson on the Red Line”), Alan Feldman (“The Terrible Memory”), current Boston poet laureate Danielle Legros Georges (“The List Grows”), and Robert Francis (“The House Remembers”).

In her introduction to the book, Kociemba describes  “threshold moments” as “those boundaries between ourselves and others, the past and the present, what we perceive and what is. These poems show that, by crossing those thresholds and telling the stories, we enter new realizations and understandings, which in turn lead to transformation—the astonished discovery that we are all part of the greater whole, a connected universe."

For more information about Common Threads, to download a free PDF of the book, and to view videos of the poets reading their poems, go to masspoetry.org/commonthreads.

" In the comics boom of the 1940s, a legend was born: the Green Turtle. He solved crimes and fought injustice just like the other comics characters. But this mysterious masked crusader was hiding something more than your run-of-the-mill secret identity: the Green Turtle was the first Asian American super hero."

The second lecture in a series of three by naturalists from Long Pasture, the base of Mass Audubon's mid-Cape operations.

In this illustrated presentation, Ian Ives, sanctuary director, will talk about salt marsh ecology.  Salt marshes are one of the most biologically rich communities in North America and are nurseries for many of the fish and shellfish Cape Codders rely so much upon.  Salt marshes are also invaluable for their pollution prevention and storm and flood reduction.  With increasing coastal development, many of Cape Cod's salt marshes have become degraded.  Learn more about these rich habitats, the creatures within them and how to help protect them.

This program is appropriate for teens and adults.  No registration necessary.

Michael J. Tougias, bestselling author and co-author of 24 books, will give a dramatic presentation based on his co-authored book So Close to Home.  Tougias will use slides of the attack, the survivors, and the rescue to make this “an edge-of-your seat” visual program. His book, The Finest Hours, will also be touched upon, as well as the making of the movie.

Please arrive early to reserve your seat(s). Doors will open at 6pm. The presentation is appropriate for all ages.

This program is made possible by the Trustees of the Falmouth Public Library.

-----

On May 19, 1942 a German U-boat in the Gulf of Mexico stalked its prey 50 miles off New Orleans. Captained by 29-year-old Erich Wurdemann, the submarine commander had his sights set on the freighter Heredia with 59 souls on board.  Most of the crew were merchant seamen, but there were also a handful of civilians including the Down’s family.  The family was comprised of the parents, Ray Sr. and Ina, along with their two children, eight year old Ray Jr., nick-named “Sonny”, and eleven year old Lucille.

Fast asleep in their berth the Down’s family had no notice that two torpedoes were heading their way.  When the ship exploded all four members of the family were separated from each other.  More than half the crew and passengers aboard the Heredia  perished, but incredibly, after 15 hours in the ocean – facing sharks, hypothermia, drowning, and dehydration—all the members of the Down’s family survived and were reunited. Ray Downs Jr. aka “Sonny” is now 80 years old but he remembers every detail of the voyage, the attack, and his family’s miraculous survival story.

SO CLOSE TO HOME  is a survival story and history book rolled into one, similar to Laura Hillenbrand’s Unbroken.  “I enjoy doing these programs,” says Tougias, “because I like to transport the audience into the heart of the storm so that they ask themselves ‘what would I have done.’  It’s like watching a movie with the author giving behind the scene details.” A book signing will follow the program, and the presentation is suitable for all ages.

Tougias, known for his fast paced writing style and character-driven stories, has written several true survival thrillers, including The Finest Hours, which is currently being made into a major motion picture by the Disney Corporation.  His other sea saga’s, include Rescue of the Bounty, Overboard!, Fatal Forecast, A Storm Too Soon, and Ten Hours Until Dawn.   On a lighter note, the author penned the award-winning memoir There’s A Porcupine In My Outhouse: Misadventures of a Mountain-man Wannabe. With his daughter Kristin he also co-authored The Cringe Chronicles: Mortifying Misadventures With My Dad.

Using GPS for Navigation

Instructor: Bob Sweet, Senior Navigator, Author: The Weekend Navigator, GPS for Mariners, Using GPS, Using GPS with Charts, and former National Educational Officer, USPS.

GPS, and chartplotters, have dramatically changed how we navigate our boats. It offers many features that can help, especially when paired with paper charts and basic navigation skills. This seminar explains what GPS provides and how to use it to your advantage. You will learn about accuracy, planning with GPS< staying on course, and then how to check your navigation. You also will learn some tips and tricks to make your navigation task simpler and safer while freeing you up for other tasks. You will gain confidence in handling your GPS and navigation. We'll also talk about digital charts and working with navigation software as complementary tools and options if you are looking to expand or upgrade your navigation gear.

Set against the backdrop of an expanding nation, Brilliant Beacons traces the evolution of America's lighthouse system from its earliest days, highlighting the political, military, and technological battles fought to illuminate the nation's hardscrabble coastlines. Beginning with "Boston Light," America’s first lighthouse, Dolin shows how the story of America, from colony to regional backwater, to fledging nation, and eventually to global industrial power, can be illustrated through its lighthouses.

This is your chance to meet an author and ask the questions you're dying to get answered. This time, the high school book club will meet with Kendare Blake, author of the Girl of Nightmares and Goddess of War series.

"Kendare Blake is the author of several novels and short stories. Her work is sort of dark, always violent, and features passages describing food from when she writes while hungry. She was born in July (for those of you doing book reports) in Seoul, South Korea, but doesn’t speak a lick of Korean, as she was packed off at a very early age to her adoptive parents in the United States. That might be just an excuse, though, as she is pretty bad at learning foreign languages. She enjoys the work of Milan Kundera, Caitlin R Kiernan, Bret Easton Ellis, Richard Linklater, and the late, great Michael Jackson, I mean, come on, he gave us Thriller.

She lives and writes in Kent, Washington, with her husband, their two cat sons (Tybalt and Tyrion Cattister) and their red Doberman dog son, Obi Dog Kenobi."

--

The high school book club is a new book club that meets during the summer. Teens are invited to read any book by Kendare Blake. Skype chat begins at 4:20pm. Pizza and refreshments served beginning at 4pm. Copies are available to pick up starting on July 1 in the YA Room at the Main Library.

Hallie Ephron will join us for a reading, signing, and discussion of Night, Night, Sleep Tight and her impressive life of writing with Boston's own Hank Phillippi Ryan, the dynamic and renowned author of What You See

New York Times best selling author Hallie Ephron grew up in a family of writers and a household filled with books. Her parents were Henry and Phoebe Ephron who wrote screenplays for classic movies like Carousel and Daddy Long Legs. Hallie was the last of their four daughters (Nora, Delia, Hallie, Amy) to start writing or, as she calls it, succumb to her genes. Now Hallie writes suspense novels she hopes keep readers up nights.

An Edgar Award finalist and a three-time finalist for the Mary Higgins Clark Award, Hallie grew up in Beverly Hills where her new suspense novel, Night Night, Sleep Tight, is set. The story is inspired by Hallie’s experiences growing up there in a Hollywood family, and by  an infamous Hollywood murder.

Hank Phillippi Ryan is the on-air investigative reporter for Boston's NBC affiliate. She's won 33 EMMYs, 13 Edward R. Murrow awards and dozens of other honors for her groundbreaking journalism. A bestselling author of seven mystery novels, Ryan has won multiple prestigious awards for her crime fiction: five Agathas, the Anthony, Daphne, Macavity, and for The Other Woman, the coveted Mary Higgins Clark Award. National reviews have called her a "master at crafting suspenseful mysteries" and "a superb and gifted storyteller."

This is your chance to meet an author and ask the questions you're dying to get answered. This time, the high school book club will meet with Fonda Lee, debut author of Zeroboxer

"A rising star in the weightless combat sport of zeroboxing, Carr “the Raptor” Luka dreams of winning the championship title. Recognizing his talent, the Zero Gravity Fighting Association assigns Risha, an ambitious and beautiful Martian colonist, to be his brandhelm––a personal marketing strategist. It isn’t long before she’s made Carr into a popular celebrity and stolen his heart along the way.

As his fame grows, Carr becomes an inspirational hero on Earth, a once-great planet that’s fallen into the shadow of its more prosperous colonies. But when Carr discovers a far-reaching criminal scheme, he becomes the keeper of a devastating secret. Not only will his choices put everything he cares about in jeopardy, but they may also spill the violence from the sports arena into the solar system."

This is your chance to meet an author and ask the questions you're dying to get answered. This time, the high school book club will meet with Jeff Garvin, debut author of Symptoms of Being Human

"Riley Cavanaugh is many things: Punk rock. Snarky. Rebellious. And gender fluid. Some days Riley identifies as a boy, and others as a girl. The thing is . . . Riley isn’t exactly out yet. And between starting a new school and having a congressman father running for reelection in uber-conservative Orange County, the pressure—media and otherwise—is building up in Riley’s so-called “normal” life.

On the advice of a therapist, Riley starts an anonymous blog to vent those pent-up feelings and tell the truth of what it’s REALLY like to be a gender-fluid teenager. But just as Riley’s starting to settle in at school—even developing feelings for a mysterious outcast—the blog goes viral, and an unnamed commenter discovers Riley’s real identity, threatening exposure. Riley must make a choice: walk away from what the blog has created—a lifeline, new friends, a cause to believe in—or stand up, come out, and risk everything."

Praise:

“Jeff Garvin has written a gorgeously crafted story with a complex, fascinating, and intensely real lead who I know will stay with me for a long time. Riley is a character who’s deeply needed in young adult fiction, and this book is a beautiful new addition to the queer YA canon.”

—ROBIN TALLEY, author of What We Left Behind

“…A smart, funny, sharp-eyed force. The knowledge [Garvin] imparts buoys this rewarding story.”

—?PUBLISHERS WEEKLY (starred review)

“Garvin’s novel is one of the first YA books to deal with the complex issue of gender fluidity…Riley’s emotional life and personal growth shed welcome light on a hitherto obscure subject.”

Marc's latest album is RIDE, released in 2015. Inspired by Marc’s lifelong love affair with the American West and produced by Marc and Mike Ricciardi, RIDE now presents ten cinematic recordings capturing the vastness and romance of the West while exploring its deep roots in the American psyche.  From the haunting message and beat of “Twister” and the soul-shaking challenge of taming a wild horse in “Take it on the Chin”, to the sexy, mind-blowing, middle-of-nowhere encounter of “Time Waits For No Man” and on through seven more scenic stops, RIDE takes you on a dusty tour of the Great American Frontier.

Monthly meeting of the Fiction Book Club.  New members always welcome! Come to the reference desk for information.

This month we are reading The Doctor's Daughter by Hilma Wolitzer.

"The Doctor's Daughter is a haunting portrait of a woman coming to terms with her family history and the fallibility of memory. One morning, Alice Brill awakes with a sudden awareness that something is wrong. There's a hollowness in her chest, and a sensation of dread that she can't identify or shake. Was it something she's done, or forgotten to do? As she scours her mind for the source of her unease, she confronts an array of disturbing possibilities."

Please join us! Copies are available at the Reference Desk.
