Monthly meeting of the Fiction Book Club.  New members always welcome! Come to the reference desk for information.

This month we are reading Harvard Square by Andre Aciman.

"An elegant and powerful tale of the wages of assimilation--a moving story of an immigrant's remembered youth and the nearly forgotten costs and sacrifices of becoming an American. A Harvard graduate student, a Jew from Egypt, longs more than anything to become an assimilated American. He spends his days in a pleasant blur of 17th century fiction, but when he meets a brash, charismatic Arab cab driver in a Harvard Square cafe everything changes."

Please join us. New members are always welcome!

Copies of the book are available at the Reference Desk.

Monthly meeting of the Falmouth Public Library Narrative Nonfiction Book Club.  This month we will be discussing Confederates in the Attic:  dispatches from the unfinished  Civil War by Tony Horwitz.  Pick up a copy of the book at the reference desk and join us!

"Propelled by his boyhood passion for the Civil War, Horwitz embarks on a search for places and people still held in thrall by America's greatest conflict.  The result is an adventure into the soul of the unvanquished South, where the ghosts of the Lost Cause are resurrected through ritual and rememberances." Request a copy from the library

A piercing and compassionate debut novel about how the new generations atone for the sins of the old in small-town America. Robert and Irene Kelly were a golden couple of the late '70s--she an artist, he a businessman, each possessed by dynamism and vibrancy. But with two young boys to care for, Irene finds herself confined by the very things she'd dreamed of having. And Robert, pressured by Irene's demands and haunted by the possibility of failure, risks the family business to pursue a fail-safe real estate opportunity. Twenty years later, their now-grown sons, Nathan and Andrew, are drawn back to confront a fateful diagnosis. As they revisit the Cape Cod of their childhood, the ghosts of the past threaten to upend the tenuous peace of the present. In The Outer Cape, Patrick Dacey delivers a story of four people grappling with the shadow of infinite possibility, a book in which chasing the American dream and struggling to survive are one and the same.

Please join us for a reading and signing with America's beloved nature writer Robert Finch. Copies of The Outer Beach will be available for sale from Eight Cousins Bookstore following the reading.

Those who have encountered Cape Cod – or merely dipped into an account of its rich history – know that it is a singular place. Robert Finch writes of its beaches: “No other place I know sears the heart with such a constant juxtaposition of pleasure and pain, of beauty being born and destroyed in the same moment.” And nowhere within its borders is this truth more vivid and dramatic than along the forty miles of Atlantic coast – what Finch has always known as “The Outer Beach.” The essays here represent over fifty years and a cumulative thousand miles of walking along the storied edge of the Cape’s epochal arm.

Widely regarded as one of America's leading nature writers, Robert Finch has lived on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, since 1971. He has published seven books of essays and is co-editor of The Norton Book of Nature Writing. His most recent book is A Cape Cod Notebook 2, a second collection of his weekly radio commentaries that have been broadcast since 2005 on WCAI, the Woods Hole NPR affiliate of WGBH, and for which he received the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award for Radio Writing in 2005 and 2013. His essays have appeared in numerous magazines and journals and his books have been translated into Japanese and Chinese. For his body of work he was named as one of the New England Literary Lights for 1999 by the Associates of the Boston Public Library, and in 2001 he received the Non-Fiction Award from the New England Booksellers Association.

Art theft is a multi-billion dollar per year illicit industry, and the world’s most significant heists share one thing in common: the priceless works of Rembrandt.  The great Dutch Master’s paintings are known for their value by everyone, from high school dropouts to museum curators. While Hollywood has portrayed the theft of high-value paintings as the work of dashing, likeable thieves working to steal art for evil, reclusive geniuses, in fact that’s nothing like the reality of art theft. Instead, it’s much more interesting.  New York Times bestselling author, Anthony Amore, takes his audience behind the scenes of the most notorious of these heists, telling the true story of art crime from the conception of the crime to the recovery of the art. Anthony Amore is the author of two best sellers: Stealing Rembrandts and The Art of the Con. The former was a Wall Street Journal True Crime Best Seller, and the latter a New York Times Crime Best Seller as well as one of Amazon's top 10 non-fiction books of 2015.

The Boston Girl is the story of Addie Baum, born in 1900 to immigrant parents who were unprepared for and suspicious of America and its effect on their three daughters. Addie’s intelligence and curiosity take her to a world her parents can’t imagine—a world of short skirts, movies, celebrity culture, and new opportunities for women; a world where women finish high school, go to college, have a career, and find true love. The Boston Girl begins when Addie’s twenty-two year old granddaughter asks, “How did you get to be the woman you are today?”

When the King of Botswana, Seretse Khama, falls in love with a London office worker, it sets in motion an international conflict of epic proportions. It is 1947 and South Africa has recently introduced Apartheid as a national law and does not like the idea of a bi-racial couple ruling a neighboring nation. South Africa threatens Great Britain's access to the country's uranium and gold mines in an attempt to stop the wedding they so fear and loathe. They also threaten to invade the smaller and poorer country if the marriage takes place and the couple continues to rule Botswana. The screenplay is by Guy Hibbert, based on the book Colour Bar by Susan Williams.

Rated PG-13, 111 minutes.

Starring, David Oyelowo, Rosamund Pike, Jack Davenport.

Cape Cod and its neighboring islands, Nantucket and Marthas Vineyard, possess extraordinary beauty. Magnificent ocean vistas, spectacular sand dunes, quiet marshes, and historic seaside villages, bring people back year after year. For the inquiring visitor the remarkable stories of courage and enterprise by those who settled the land and shaped its character provide background for thoughtful reflection. This stunning new book features fifty of Kathryn Kleekamps original oil paintings depicting land and seascapes along with rare historic photographs. Image and text capture the fundamental nature of this remarkable area: the heartbeat of those who farmed the land, fished the seas, captained the great schooners, or waited at home for a loved ones return. The historic vignettes explore major influences that made Cape Cod, Nantucket, and Marthas Vineyard what they are today. Traditional Cape and Island recipes found here are another link to the present from the past.

Before moving to Cape Cod, Kathryn enjoyed a 30-year career as a clinical microbiologist. Primarily a self-guided realistic painter, she works in oils and occasionally watercolor. Her goal is to capture an image or moment in time and have the viewer experience his or her own special memories of that place.

Reviews:

Eden, a vacation retreat in Long Harbor, Rhode Island, has always been part of Becca's life, but now she is about to lose it forever. Her father built the home before the stock-market crash of 1929. The family always spent summers there, the slower pace a welcome break from the workaday routine during the rest of the year. For Becca and her kin, the home is imbued with memories of its previous owners, the assignment of the choicest rooms a bone of contention among different relatives that dates back years. Before she can face up to life without Eden, however, she must tell her family a secret that she kept for 50 years. The novel explores the lives of Becca and her closest relations: her once-vibrant mother, who faded to a shade of her former self; her bitter daughter, trapped in a miserable marriage; and her granddaughter, pregnant at 29 with a married man's child. The choices and constraints faced by each woman echo through the generations, poignantly showing how paradise can remain out of reach. A stirring historical novel perfect for women's-fiction fans.--Thoreson, Bridget (Booklist)

    Contact: Reference Department   508-457-2555 ext. 6   info@falmouthpubliclibrary.org

Please join us for a reading & signing with Holly FitzGerald, author of Ruthless River in the Hermann Room.

Holly and her husband, Fitz—married less than two years—set out on a yearlong honeymoon adventure of a lifetime, backpacking around the world. Five months into the trip their plane crash lands in Peru at a penal colony walled in by jungle, and their blissfully romantic journey turns into a terrifying nonstop labyrinth of escape and survival.

On a small, soon-ravaged raft that quickly becomes their entire universe through dangerous waters alive with deadly animals and fish, their only choice: to continue on, despite the rush of insects swarming them by day, the sounds of encroaching predators at night. Without food or means of communication, with no one to hear their cries for help or on a search-and-rescue expedition to find them, the author and her husband make their way, fighting to conquer starvation and navigate the brute force of the river, their only hope for survival, in spite of hunger and weakening resolve, to somehow, miraculously hang on and find their way east to a large riverside town, before it is too late.

About the author: Holly FitzGerald was born in Seattle and grew up in Connecticut. After earning her Bachelor’s in English from Lake Erie College and her Master’s in Counseling from Suffolk University, she met Gerald “Fitz” FitzGerald, a Vietnam Combat vet. They were married after he was hired as a newspaper reporter.. Holly worked for years as a psychotherapist and later a career counselor at Bristol Community College in New Bedford. The FitzGeralds live in South Dartmouth, and have two grown children, Megan and Aiden, and four grandchildren.

    Contact: Reference Department   508-457-2555 ext. 6   info@falmouthpubliclibrary.org

Join us for a reading and signing with internationally bestselling author Tess Gerritsen. Registration is encouraged.

I KNOW A SECRET has our favorite crime fighting duo Detective Jane Rizzoli and medical examiner Maura Isles investigating the gruesome staged murder of a horror film producer in this edge-of-your-seat thriller. In a house decorated with horror movie posters, a young woman’s body is found. She lies on her bed, her eyes removed and placed in the palm of her hand, a gesture that echoes the terrifying films she produces. Is a crazed movie fan reenacting scenes from those disturbing films? When another victim is found, again with no apparent cause of death and a grotesquely staged crime scene, Jane and Maura realize the killer has widened his circle of targets. He’s chosen one particular woman for his next victim, and she knows he’s coming for her next. She’s the only one who can help Jane and Maura catch the killer. But she knows a secret. And it’s a secret she’ll never tell.

I KNOW A SECRET is the 12th book in RIZZOLI & ISLES’ best selling suspense and thriller novel series and will finally reveal what happens between Maura and Daniel Brophy – and which man Angela chooses. It will be published on August 15, 2017.

Internationally bestselling author Tess Gerritsen took an unusual route to a writing career. A graduate of Stanford University, Tess went on to medical school at the University of California, San Francisco, where she was awarded her M.D. While on maternity leave from her work as a physician, she began to write fiction. Tess’s first medical thriller, Harvest, was released in hardcover in 1996, and it marked her debut on the New York Times bestseller list. Her suspense novels since then have been: Life Support (1997), Bloodstream (1998), Gravity (1999), The Surgeon (2001), The Apprentice (2002), The Sinner (2003), Body Double (2004), Vanish (2005), The Mephisto Club (2006), The Bone Garden (2007), The Keepsake (2008; UK title: Keeping the Dead), Ice Cold (2010; UK title: The Killing Place), The Silent Girl (2011), Last To Die (August 2012), Die Again (January 2015) and Playing With Fire (coming October 27, 2015). Her books have been published in forty countries, and more than 30 million copies have been sold around the world. Her series of novels featuring homicide detective Jane Rizzoli and medical examiner Maura Isles inspired the TNT television series “Rizzoli & Isles” starring Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander. Now retired from medicine, she writes full time. She lives in Maine.
