Margaret Moody brings her puppet show about the Monkey King to the Middleborough Public Library.

The Chinese Monkey King soars into the heavens and delights in his new job in the Heavenly Peach Garden. But when he discovers he has been left out of the Jade Emperor’s Peach Blossom Banquet, Monkey flies off to make mischief in the Heavens. This lively episode of the Chinese epic Journey to the West features traditional hand puppets and choreography which Margaret Moody studied with the I Wan Jan Traditional Hand Puppet Troupe in Taiwan. The show is best for ages four and up.  No registration is required for this free program.

This month’s selection is "The Japanese Lover" by Isabel Allende. "In 1939, as Poland falls under the shadow of the Nazis, young Alma Belasco’s parents send her away to live in safety with an aunt and uncle in their opulent mansion in San Francisco. There, as the rest of the world goes to war, she encounters Ichimei Fukuda, the quiet and gentle son of the family’s Japanese gardener. Unnoticed by those around them, a tender love affair begins to blossom. Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the two are cruelly pulled apart as Ichimei and his family—like thousands of other Japanese Americans—are declared enemies and forcibly relocated to internment camps run by the United States government." -Amazon. New England is as dotted with colorful and fascinating feuds as it is with low stone walls and big, red barns. And many of them go back just as far.  Did you know that the Breeds and the Bunkers are still fighting over a hill?  Or that the revolution is still being fought  -- by Lexington and Concord? From the colonial era through early aviation, to Red Sox-Yankees and present-day food fights, Ted Reinstein tells us who's really Wicked Pissed in New England and why.

A Q&A and book signing/selling will follow the presentation.

Ted Reinstein has been a reporter for “Chronicle,” WCVB-TV/Boston’s award-winning—and America’s longest-running, locally-produced—nightly news magazine since 1997. In addition,  he is a regular contributor for the station’s political roundtable show and writes a weekly opinion column. He lives just west of Boston with his wife and two daughters. He is also the author of New England Notebook: One Reporter, Six States, Uncommon Stories.

This month’s selection is "The Underground Railroad" by Colson Whitehead. "Cora is a slave on a cotton plantation in Georgia. Life is hell for all the slaves, but especially bad for Cora; an outcast even among her fellow Africans, she is coming into womanhood—where even greater pain awaits. When Caesar, a recent arrival from Virginia, tells her about the Underground Railroad, they decide to take a terrifying risk and escape. Matters do not go as planned—Cora kills a young white boy who tries to capture her. Though they manage to find a station and head north, they are being hunted." -Amazon. Come speak (via Skype) with author Deb Caletti and hear about her new book for adults, What's Become of Her, and about her life as an author.  She'll also answer questions from the audience.

The Skype call with Caletti will run from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.  Then everyone is invited to stay until 8:00 p.m.to join Ellie and Her Bookies for a discussion of Caletti's book, He's Gone.

This month’s selection is "He's Gone" by Deb Caletti. "On Sunday morning after a wild party, Dani wakes up alone and hopes her husband has gone to get coffee and muffins. A little later, she thinks maybe he is angry about a tiff the night before and decided to spend Sunday at work. It isn’t until dark is falling and she finds his car in the parking lot near their home that she begins to worry. What follows are agonizing days of searching and hoping. Did something awful happen, or is his disappearance voluntary? Neither answer is comforting, and Dani proceeds to rethink every moment of their marriage, from their first meeting to the party right before his disappearance. -- Booklist

Let's create and build sand sculptures together!  This group will meet monthly and will engage parents and 3-5 year olds in parachute play, mystery box, stories, songs and movement, creating a plan with the suggested materials and theme, and designing your sand sculpture using various tools and creativity.

Pictures will be taken of each design and sent to the participants every month along with a related fun art project to do at home.

Space is limited for this free program.  Stop by the library or call 508-946-2470 to sign up.
