This month’s selection is "The Japanese Lover" by Isabel Allende. "In 1939, as Poland falls under the shadow of the Nazis, young Alma Belasco’s parents send her away to live in safety with an aunt and uncle in their opulent mansion in San Francisco. There, as the rest of the world goes to war, she encounters Ichimei Fukuda, the quiet and gentle son of the family’s Japanese gardener. Unnoticed by those around them, a tender love affair begins to blossom. Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the two are cruelly pulled apart as Ichimei and his family—like thousands of other Japanese Americans—are declared enemies and forcibly relocated to internment camps run by the United States government." -Amazon. New England is as dotted with colorful and fascinating feuds as it is with low stone walls and big, red barns. And many of them go back just as far.  Did you know that the Breeds and the Bunkers are still fighting over a hill?  Or that the revolution is still being fought  -- by Lexington and Concord? From the colonial era through early aviation, to Red Sox-Yankees and present-day food fights, Ted Reinstein tells us who's really Wicked Pissed in New England and why.

A Q&A and book signing/selling will follow the presentation.

Ted Reinstein has been a reporter for “Chronicle,” WCVB-TV/Boston’s award-winning—and America’s longest-running, locally-produced—nightly news magazine since 1997. In addition,  he is a regular contributor for the station’s political roundtable show and writes a weekly opinion column. He lives just west of Boston with his wife and two daughters. He is also the author of New England Notebook: One Reporter, Six States, Uncommon Stories.

This month’s selection is "The Underground Railroad" by Colson Whitehead. "Cora is a slave on a cotton plantation in Georgia. Life is hell for all the slaves, but especially bad for Cora; an outcast even among her fellow Africans, she is coming into womanhood—where even greater pain awaits. When Caesar, a recent arrival from Virginia, tells her about the Underground Railroad, they decide to take a terrifying risk and escape. Matters do not go as planned—Cora kills a young white boy who tries to capture her. Though they manage to find a station and head north, they are being hunted." -Amazon. New members always welcome!

This month’s selection is "Angels Fall" by Nora Roberts. "The sole survivor of a brutal crime back East, Reece Gilmore settles in Angel’s Fall, Wyoming—temporarily, at least—and takes a job at a local diner. One day, while hiking in the mountains, she peers through her binoculars and sees a couple arguing on the bank of the churning Snake River. And suddenly, the man is on top of the woman, his hands around her throat... By the time Reece reaches a gruff loner named Brody farther down the trail, the pair is gone. And when authorities comb the area where she saw the attack, they find no trace that anyone was even there."-Amazon.  Newcomers to the group are welcomed to attend!

This month’s selection is "He's Gone" by Deb Caletti. "On Sunday morning after a wild party, Dani wakes up alone and hopes her husband has gone to get coffee and muffins. A little later, she thinks maybe he is angry about a tiff the night before and decided to spend Sunday at work. It isn’t until dark is falling and she finds his car in the parking lot near their home that she begins to worry. What follows are agonizing days of searching and hoping. Did something awful happen, or is his disappearance voluntary? Neither answer is comforting, and Dani proceeds to rethink every moment of their marriage, from their first meeting to the party right before his disappearance. -- Booklist

This month’s selection is "An Officer and a Spy" by Robert Harris. "A whistle-blower, a witch hunt, a cover-up, secret tribunals, out-of-control intelligence agencies, and government corruption. Welcome to 1890s Paris.  Alfred Dreyfus has been convicted of treason, sentenced to life imprisonment on a far-off island, and publicly stripped of his rank. Among the witnesses to his humiliation is Georges Picquart, an ambitious military officer who believes in Dreyfus's guilt as staunchly as any member of the public. But when he is promoted to head of the French counter-espionage agency, Picquart finds evidence that a spy still remains at large in the military—indicating that Dreyfus is innocent." -Amazon. This month’s selection is "Beastly Things: A Commissario Guido Brunetti Mystery" by Donna Leon. "It’s no wonder that Donna Leon’s latest mystery debuted on the New York Times bestseller list at number ten. The series’s tantalizing crimes, Venetian setting, and much-loved commissario are a winning combination that continues to earn critical acclaim and a growing readership around the globe.  In Beastly Things, Leon lives up to her reputation as a writer unafraid to address the corruption underlying La Serenissima’s outward beauty. When an unidentified murder victim winds up in a canal, Brunetti travels beyond his usual sphere to find the connection between the dead man and a local slaughterhouse." -Amazon. New members always welcome!
