rec_paintpalette Local En Plein Air Painters     Tell a Friend
In conjunction with the exhibition Turner to Cézanne, at the Everson Museum of Art, an en plein air (“in the open air”) painting event was held at the Stone Quarry Hill Art Park in Cazenovia, New York this summer. Plein Air artists gathered to create works of art inspired by the beautiful vistas and rolling hills of Central New York. Other local plein air artists were also invited to submit plein air works, many of which were created around Central NY State.

The term en plein air is a French term that literally translates “in the open air.” Up until the 1800s artists generally painted in studios, but Impressionist artists began to experiment with painting outdoors. They wanted to capture the effects of a specific moment in time such as the angle of the sun at a particular time of day, a weather pattern, season or even people as they walked down the street. http://www.onlib.org

In Dr. Poulin's words, Gage was "a woman who took Elizabeth Cady Stanton's brilliant ideas to another level and Susan B. Anthony's activisim to a broader, deeper scope of human rights." Gage was a champion of the rights of African Americans and Native Americans, as well as women. The Matilda Joslyn Gage home in Fayetteville, run by the Matilda Joslyn Gage Foundation, is open to the public. Professor Poulin says that in some ways she has been "forgotten" by history.

rec_paintpalette 2:00 PM Turner to Cezanne: Impressionist Innovations     Tell a Friend
Judith Meighan, Associate Professor of the History of Art, College of Visual and Performing Arts, Syracuse University

Throughout the 1800s, European artists borrowed from both poets and scientists to create art that broke with convention and disturbed the complacent. Impressionist painters discovered the path to luminous color, the evocation of emotion, and the means for rendering the sublime. We will look closely at ten works on view in the "Turner to Cezanne" exhibit at the Everson Museum of Art and examine how painters suchs as Turner, Monet and Van Gogh liberated their art from the past. http://www.onlib.org
