Single Session 90 Minutes Course Presentation

The Social Security Benefits course offers information for people nearing retirement and interested in learning more about Social Security claiming options and when to file for benefits.  Social Security represents the foundation of retirement income, and properly coordinating it with other income and asset sources is critical to establishing a retirement cash flow that will be sufficient to last throughout retirement.  We will review the changes to Social Security that were enacted in 2015 as part of the Bi-Partisan Budget Act.  This law made sweeping changes to claiming options and strategies that need to be understood before filing for benefits.

Specific topics to be reviewed include:

How to properly file for Social Security benefits

How to maximize the amount you are eligible for

How to avoid the most common mistakes people make when claiming their benefits

Collecting Social Security while you continue to work

 Taxation of Social Security benefits

Social Security information for widows, widowers, and divorcees

7:00 PM  -  8:45 PM North Sea Gas

"North Sea Gas" (Ronnie MacDonald, Grant Simpson, and Dave Gilfillan) are a highly entertaining Scottish folk band that has been playing and touring worldwide for over thirty-seven years.

They are one of Scotland’s most popular folk bands, with great vocals and tremendous three-part harmonies. Guitars, mandolin, fiddle, bouzouki, whistles, bodhrans, banjo, and good humor are all part of the entertainment. They have received Gold and Silver disc awards from the Scottish Music Industry Association and regularly have sell-out shows at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

They are constantly adding new material to their show and have recorded 19 albums. A recent album, "The Fire and the Passion of Scotland" won the 2013 Album of the Year award from Celtic Radio in the U.S. as well as first place in the "Jigs and Reels" category for the set of tunes on the album. Celtic Radio says, "The band displays an attachment and a reverence for their roots from the very start. The music feels genuine, unpretentious and spontaneous, with a fondness for storytelling and beautiful harmonies."

The trio having filled and then brought down the house here three years running, the Friends of the Walpole Public Library are thrilled to have them return to entertain you. Come early to get a seat!?

7:00 PM  -  8:30 PM Communicating With Your Teen

Effective communication is a critical part of the healthy functioning in all families. Ineffective communications result in feelings of being misunderstood, not heard, anger, resentment, and sadness. To help families with this problem, Social Dynamix is offering this special workshop. Using elements of improvisation, psychodrama, social pragmatics, and action-based techniques, you will observe a totally unique, interactive style enhancing communication between peers and within families.

You will learn:
• a new way of looking at “why” communication is difficult
• how to understand the feelings, frustrations and deep emotion underneath the words spoken
• to look at real life family scenes in order to understand the “other’s” perspective

Question and answer period will follow.

7:00 PM  -  8:45 PM Black Flags, Blue Waters

Set against the backdrop of the Age of Exploration, Black Flags, Blue Waters reveals the dramatic and surprising history of American piracy’s “Golden Age”—spanning the late 1600s through the early 1700s—when lawless pirates plied the coastal waters of North America and beyond. Bestselling author Eric Jay Dolin illustrates how American colonists at first supported these outrageous pirates in an early display of colonial solidarity against the Crown, and then violently opposed them. Through engrossing episodes of roguish glamour and extreme brutality, Dolin depicts the star pirates of this period, among them towering Blackbeard, ill-fated Captain Kidd, and sadistic Edward Low, who delighted in torturing his prey. Also brilliantly detailed are the pirates’ manifold enemies, including colonial governor John Winthrop, evangelist Cotton Mather, and young Benjamin Franklin. Upending popular misconceptions and cartoonish stereotypes, Dolin provides this wholly original account of the seafaring outlaws whose raids reflect the precarious nature of American colonial life.
