6:30 PM  -  8:45 PM After Suicide: Understanding Your Grief
    Contact: Emily   617-674-5230

The suicide of a loved one can have a profound and sometimes devastating impact on the family, friends, and communities left behind. Bereavement after suicide may entail high levels of disorientation, guilt, regret, anger, and trauma. People bereaved by suicide, sometimes called suicide loss survivors, may also struggle with the social stigma placed on suicide.

Survivors can be at risk for elevated rates of complicated grief and suicidality themselves. All of this makes surviving the suicide of a loved one a potentially life-changing ordeal that requires all of the resilience that a survivor can muster, and all the support and understanding that family and community can provide.

Led by John R. Jordan, Ph.D, this presentation draws on his years of experience as a counselor specializing in work with suicide loss survivors to describe the pathways that survivors may travel. Geared towards people who are grieving a loss to suicide, as well as those who care for them (including clinicians, friends, extended family, and others), the goal is to help participants better understand suicide and the grief that may happen when a suicide occurs.

   7:00 PM  -  8:45 PM Bloodlines - Neville Frankel

In this riveting session, author Neville Frankel shares his journey back to South Africa after an absence of almost 40 years. Frankel will discuss the rediscovery of his own history and the legacy of the past, as well as the process of researching, writing, and speaking about his apartheid-era novel Bloodlines.

Frankel fills his talk with heartfelt personal stories that impart a real sense of the book, and the life and history that produced them both. This wide-ranging presentation will provide insights into what it meant for black and white South Africans to live under apartheid, and a fascinating view into the issues faced by South Africans today.

7:00 PM  -  8:45 PM Black Flags, Blue Waters

Set against the backdrop of the Age of Exploration, Black Flags, Blue Waters reveals the dramatic and surprising history of American piracy’s “Golden Age”—spanning the late 1600s through the early 1700s—when lawless pirates plied the coastal waters of North America and beyond. Bestselling author Eric Jay Dolin illustrates how American colonists at first supported these outrageous pirates in an early display of colonial solidarity against the Crown, and then violently opposed them. Through engrossing episodes of roguish glamour and extreme brutality, Dolin depicts the star pirates of this period, among them towering Blackbeard, ill-fated Captain Kidd, and sadistic Edward Low, who delighted in torturing his prey. Also brilliantly detailed are the pirates’ manifold enemies, including colonial governor John Winthrop, evangelist Cotton Mather, and young Benjamin Franklin. Upending popular misconceptions and cartoonish stereotypes, Dolin provides this wholly original account of the seafaring outlaws whose raids reflect the precarious nature of American colonial life.

7:00 PM  -  9:45 PM World War Women - Unsung Heroines of World War II

Embodying the spirit of five women who risked their lives to defeat Fascism in World War Two, World War Women is a suspenseful reliving of the terrors and triumphs of some of our greatest heroines. From organizing the resistance, to rescuing downed RAF pilots, testing new aircraft, and flying dangerous missions, these stories are not for the faint of heart and tell of what may very well be the most influential and often forgotten victories of the war. It’s a performance that reminds audiences young and old that humanity is strongest when working together.

On November 11, 1918, Germany agreed to an armistice with the Allied powers, ending the huge conflict that had lasted more than four years and involved more than 70 million military personnel, high casualties, and massive destruction. How did this tragic conflict begin? Who were the players and what were their interests? What was the course of the battles, and what led to the armistice?

Dr. Hylander will cover all these questions and describe the ultimate effects on the world at the time, and how it affected the future on a global scale.
