    Contact: Amy Hindle   781-982-2139   ablib@ocln.org

The Abington Public Library will welcome mentalist Rory Raven on Monday Oct. 23 at 7:00 PM.   A mentalist is a theatrical mind-reader, a performer who, using a variety of techniques, is able to produce results that would only seem possible by psychic or paranormal means.  Rory’s show, called Brainstorming:  an Act of Mentalism, is an interactive stage mind-reading show.  Minds are read, spoons are bent, and volunteers test their own “powers”.

Rory Raven is not a psychic.  His skill set includes knowledge of subtle psychological principals and the quirks of human behavior, quick thinking and a good memory.  He is also interested in suggestion, non-verbal communication, and the so-called trance state.  All of these interests, combined with ideas borrowed from stage magicians will be explored during Rory’s show, Brainstorming:  An Act of Mentalism.

This program is appropriate for adults and teens.  Registration is not necessary for this event.    Questions may be directed to Children's Librarian Amy Hindle or Library Director Deborah Grimmett at 781-982-2139, or via email at ablib@ocln.org.

7:00 PM An Evening with Kenneth Gloss - Proprietor of the Brattle Book Shop
    Contact: Deborah Grimmett   781-982-2139   ablib@ocln.org

Kenneth Gloss, proprietor of the internationally known Brattle Book Shop in Boston’s Downtown Crossing section, will give a free and open talk Thursday, November 2 at 7:00 pm at the Abington Public Library600 Gliniewicz Way, Abington, MA.  Ken will discuss the value of old and rare books.  Space is limited; 80 people will be accomodated on a first-to-arrive basis.

Ken, who is also a frequent guest appraiser on PBS’ Antiques Roadshow, will talk in part about the history of his historic bookshop (www.brattlebookshop.com), which goes back to circa 1825. He is a second-generation owner.

Ken will talk about and show some of his favorite finds and describe some of the joys of the "hunt," as well as explain what makes a book go up in value. He has many fascinating anecdotes to share as well as guidelines for what to look for when starting a collection. There is also a Q&A session before the conclusion of his talk.

Following the talk and question-and-answer session, he will give free verbal appraisals of all books that attendees have brought with them or will do so at his shop in Boston.

Yankee Magazine Editor's Choice Award for Best of New England, the Brattle Book Shop is one of America’s oldest and largest antiquarian bookstores. 2017 is the 68th year of Gloss family ownership. Kenneth Gloss succeeded his late father, George Gloss, a well-known figure both in Boston and national antiquarian circles. He had worked in the store since childhood and chose to go into the book business rather than pursue a doctorate in chemistry. He became the sole proprietor upon his father's death in 1985. "I found that books were in my blood and that I would never be really happy if I abandoned the business."

Among the many organizations in which Kenneth Gloss is a member is the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America, the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers, the New England Antiquarian Booksellers of America, the Massachusetts and Rhode Island Antiquarian Booksellers Association, the Committee for the Boston International Antiquarian Book Fair and the Boston Society. He also is a Fellow of the Massachusetts Historical Society as well as serving on the Board of Overseers of the USS Constitution Museum.

The Brattle Book Shop is proud to have been a contributor to the WGBH Annual Auction each year that the station has held this fund drive. Ken has appeared as a guest appraiser on PBS’ Antiques Roadshow numerous times over the years and has been a popular guest on WBZ Radio as well as other radio, TV, and cable stations numerous times. His bylined articles continue to appear in various antique journals and in print and online consumer publications. The Brattle Book Shop is also the recipient of several “Best of Boston” awards in the categories of Best Book Shop or Best Antiquarian Book Shop.  In addition, it has been included in a list as one of North America’s best bookstores.

For further information about this talk and more about book-collecting, appraisals, and future free and open talks, call the store toll-free at800-447-9595, or visit their website, www.brattlebookshop.com.

The Abington Public Library will welcome best-selling author Kate Clifford Larson on Wednesday November 8 at 7:00 PM.  Larson’s book, Rosemary, The Hidden Kennedy Daughter spent ten weeks on the New York Times Best Seller list and was the 2016 winner of the Massachusetts Book Award for Non-Fiction.  The author will speak about the life of her subject, Rosemary Kennedy.  Rosemary was the eldest Kennedy daughter and the sister of John F. Robert and Edward Kennedy.  She was intellectually disabled; a fact which was hidden by her glamorous and achievement oriented family.  Kate Clifford Larson meticulously researched Rosemary’s life, including letters she wrote from boarding school, and the author presents her tragic life in a compassionate and fascinating style.

Dr. Larson is the author of three critically acclaimed biographies.  She holds two degrees from Simmons College, an MBA from Northeastern University, and a Ph.D. from the University of New Hampshire. She lives in Winchester, Massachusetts.  Copies of Rosemary, The Hidden Kennedy Daughter will be available for purchase and author signing at the conclusion of the program.  This program is provided courtesy of the author and the Friends of the Library.

We are pleased to welcome Supervisory Park Ranger Alan S. Banks from the Frederick Law Olmstead National Historical Site to speak about Olmstead's landscape architecture projects in Massachusetts, and in Chicago at the 1893 World's Fair, as featured in Erik Larson's book Devil in the White City.  The firm Frederick Law Olmsted founded over a century ago was involved in over 1,200 landscape architecture projects throughout Massachusetts, ranging from expansive 500-acre public parks to intimate private gardens. One of its greatest achievements is a six-mile "emerald necklace" of ponds, parks, and parkways that winds its way through Boston. This one-hour illustrated lecture will sample this rich landscape legacy and explore the ideas that shaped some of the most treasured places in Massachusetts. Biographical Note Alan S. Banks oversees the historical interpretation of Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site in Brookline, Massachusetts. During the last 25 years he has researched and developed a variety of landscape walking tours, lectures and presentations on the Olmsteds and their work across the country. In 2013, he was an invited speaker at the Appalachian Institute at Biltmore Estate in North Carolina and later that year he traveled to Milwaukee to speak on Olmsted-designed, Lake Park. Last year he was the keynote speaker at the regional meeting of the American Society of Landscape Architects in Atlanta.

Registration is not required for this program; 75 adults and teens (age sixteen and older please) will be accomodated at this event.
