     Student Poetry Contest Grades 1-12

During the month of April the Agawam Public Library will be hosting a poetry contest for students in grades 1-12.

Entries will be accepted April 1st through April 29th.

All entries submitted must meet contest guidelines.

GUIDELINES:

** Writers must be in grades 1 to 12.  ** Poem entries must be original work**Maximum of 1 poem per author may be entered. ** Poems cannot be longer than one 8 1/2 X 11 inch page. ** Poems must be typed or hand-written on white paper with no illustrations or decorations. ** The author’s name must not appear anywhere on the poem. ** The poem must have a title that should be centered at the top of the page.

DEADLINE:

Entries will be taken April 1st – April 29th, 2017. Entries must be received by 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 29th. Entries cannot be put in the book drop. E-mail entries will not be accepted.

 

Poems will be judged based on Spelling, Grammar, Style & Presentation, Impact, and Originality.

Contest winners will be announced May 19th, 2017.

All entries will be bound into a book for viewing at the library.

Author Ellen Meeropol returns with her newest novel, Kinship of Clover, a work of political fiction.  Botany major, Jeremy, was nine when the vines first wrapped themselves around him and burrowed into his skin.  Now he is desparately looking for a way to listen to the plants and stave off their extinction.  Encountering a group of climate-justice activists whos devotion may have him tangled up in more trouble that he was prepared for, the question becomes, "How far is too far?"  

Meeropol, a former nurse-practitioner adn part-time bookseller, is also the author of House Arrest and On Hurricane Island and the dramatic program, Carry it Forward, about the Rosenburg Fund for Children.

Maureen Shepard will offer a scrapbooking/journaling workshop for adults at 10:30 with all materials provided.  You just need to bring 10 of your favorite photos.  Your reserved table space is available for you to use for crafts until 4:30.  Feel free to bring snacks and a bagged lunch.  (Due to limited space and electrical outlets, Cricut machines and extra tables will not be allowed.)

REGISTRATION IS A MUST FOR THIS EVENT AS SPACE IS LIMITED.  NO WALK-INS PLEASE!

This event is hosted by that Agawam Family & Community Program.

This program is designed for children ages 6-12 and their families.

Pictures can only tell part of a memory, come learn how to tell the rest of the story. Learn to create a memory journal that you and your family will treasure for years come. Each child will be provided with one complete album per school year. Refill pages will be provided once initial album is complete. Attendees are asked to bring their own pictures.

The Spring 2017 Zip One Book Symposium will be discussing A Great Reckoning by Louise Penny. 

Ms. Penny is a beloved Canadian Author who has created a  New York Times Bestselling series featuring Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Quebec Surete, the provincial police force in Quebec, Canada. A Great Reckoning is much more than a well-written mystery. The story also raises the focus on the importance of how we relate to one another in today’s world, especially with regards to those charged with the responsibility of enforcing the law.

This Spring’s Symposium will be held on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. at the Agawam Public Library. A limited amount of books are available at the library during regular business hours. We hope to see you there!

YogaFit is designed to improve the health, performance and mental acuity of individuals interested in improving their level of fitness.  Based on the ancient fitness science of hatha yoga, it blends balance, strength, flexibility, and power in a fitness format.  YogaFit overcomes the mystery of yoga by delivering a practical, user-friendly style, which is accessible, understandable and doable by  individuals at any level of fitness.  Classes will be led by Mary Ellen More from the West of the River Family Center.  No experience is necessary and all fitness levels are welcome.  Please bring a yoga mat or towel.

Monday, June 26th – Friday, August 4th 2017 Registration begins June 5th 2017

Kids and teens use their Reading Logs keep track of the time they spend reading (or listening to a book being read). Kids and teens earn raffle tickets just by reading.  The raffle tickets can be used to enter to win weekly raffles or a grand prize raffle.

Reading Logs can be picked up at the library beginning June 19th.

After 25 days of reading, all participants will be eligible for a certificate and a book of their choice.
