In June 2015, after a young white supremacist murdered nine members of Charleston, South Carolina’s historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, Bernard Powers, Professor of History at the College of Charleston, joined with co-authors to explain the background and meaning of that tragic event which immediately became the focus of our nation’s conversations on race, violence, history, and forgiveness. The resulting book, We Are Charleston: Tragedy and Triumph at Mother Emanuel, explores the history of the AME denomination and Emanuel’s place in it, the lives of those who were killed and their extraordinary families as well as the way racism still manifests itself in American life today.  Join us for an interactive presentation and discussion with Bernard Powers. Presented in cooperation with the Akron Area Interfaith Council. July 4, 1876. As Americans are in full swing celebrating the centennial of our nation’s founding, shocking news is arriving from the western plains.  Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer and part of his 7th US Cavalry have been completely annihilated at the Little Big Horn, Montana Territory.   How could Custer, the great Indian fighter and Civil War general, be gone?  What had happened along this small river valley?  The story starts well before the day of battle, on June 25, 1876, and involves not just George Custer but several prominent individuals who had worked so well together just over a decade earlier during the American Civil War.   Now politics, corruption, and intrigue have marred their interactions leading to this tragic event. Listen as we find out about these relationships and their influence on The Little Bighorn –  A Civil War Band of Brothers.   Presented by Cass Kuhl.
