Each Monday is June and July we'll be featuring a classic movie that will bring back the "good old days" of the Saturday Matinee. Bring your lunch or enjoy popcorn while you are transported back to the days of John Wayne, Bogie and Bacall, and others stars that filled the silver screen with magic, music, drama and excitement.
Today's movie is about a girl (Julie Andrews) who comes to town in the roaring twenties and encounters flappers, love, white slavers and intrique. Don't be fooled by the description, this show is filled with uproareous comedy, too. It also features Mary Tyler Moore. Any guesses?

We're starting up a teen summer book club based on our popular adult Page-to-Screen club. Here's how it works: come to the meeting and watch a movie then take the book it's based on home and read it. Come back the next meeting ready to discuss how the book transcribed from page-to-screen. Then, watch a different movie and read the book ... you get the idea. A fun and interesting way to spend summer reading time.

In association with the KANSAS HUMANITIES COUNCIL, Atchison Library presents Kansas Brewers and Breweries.
As settlers streamed into Kansas, brewers set up their mash tuns and wort kettles when making beer was still and art and state prohibition a bemusing notion. Discover these brewers of early Kansas, their role in their communities, and learn about brewers today. This discussion is led by Cindy Higgins, a former professor at Rockhurst University and Baker University, and a journalist and Kansas historian.

In association with the KANSAS HUMANITIES COUNCIL, Atchison Library is hosting a series of book talks featuring WOMEN AROUND THE WORLD. This month we will feature Denise Lowe and her discussion of the New York Times Best Seller "The House of the Spirits."
In one of the most important and beloved Latin American works of the twentieth century, Isabel Allende weaves a luminous tapestry of three generations of the Trueba family, revealing both triumphs and tragedies. Here is patriarch Esteban, whose wild desires and political machinations are tempered only by his love for his ethereal wife, Clara, a woman touched by an otherworldly hand. Their daughter, Blanca, whose forbidden love for a man Esteban has deemed unworthy infuriates her father, yet will produce his greatest joy: his granddaughter Alba, a beautiful, ambitious girl who will lead the family and their country into a revolutionary future.

Each Monday is June and July we'll be featuring a classic movie that will bring back the "good old days" of the Saturday Matinee. Bring your lunch or enjoy popcorn while you are transported back to the days of John Wayne, Bogie and Bacall, and other stars that filled the silver screen with magic, music, drama and excitement.
Featuring a wonderful score and an acclaimed cast, this musical comedy will have your toes tapping and sides splitting. It's the story of a great American sharpshooter, (played by Betty Hutton,) who rises to fame while dealing with her love/professional rival, (played by Howard Keel.) If you've figure out the title, you know what a delightful time you're in for.
