6:30 PM  -  8:30 PM Geography of food: Wines of the world

~~Great wine seldom occurs by accident.  It comes from great wine places and from artisans who can maximize what their environments have to offer.  Wine thus gives us a ‘taste’ of its place of origin.  It is essentially geography in a bottle.  In this class we will talk about the environmental factors as well as the human element in the making of wine.  We will also sample some of the products of the wine-makers art. Led by Dr. Sommers.
Ages 21+ for samples!

~~Dr. Brian J. Sommers is the Assistant to the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences and Director of the International Studies program at Central Connecticut State University.  He has a PhD in Geography from the University of Arizona.  His research and teaching interests are in cultural geography and heritage landscapes.  Dr. Sommers’ interests in wine are as a result of work done while pursuing his master’s degree at Miami University (Ohio).  He is the author of “The Geography of Wine” published by Plume Press (2008).

Special literary discussion of A Gentleman in Moscow, led by Aimme Pozorski, CCSU

~~“Well, where is our purpose now?”
Class and Place in A Gentleman in Moscow

Amor Towles’s 2016 novel, A Gentleman in Moscow signals its interest in the effects of place and class in its very title. Taking place in a grand hotel across from the Kremlin, and focused on a young count in 1922, the novel opens not with printed language, but with two maps—the first of Moscow, and the second of the Theatre Square.  Even the poem after the title page, a poem written by the count himself, asks, as its guiding principle:  Where is our purpose now?

At the time, writing poetry was considered an endeavor afforded by the ruling class, who, in this case, is not asking what the purpose (political and otherwise) may be, but rather, where.  Reading this contemporary novel with a focus on class and place, this presentation will consider the particulars of the novel itself, but also question what literary representation can tell us generally about the history of a place—as well as the history of the ruling classes—in the twentieth century and beyond.

We will include a coffee tasting and food pairing representing different global regions as part of this class. However, you do not have to be a coffee drinker to enjoy this course! Led by Dr. Pope. Samples will be served!

Chocolates of the World!

~~Chocolate is a luxury food that is loved (and craved) globally. In this course, we will go on a journey of chocolate from the currency of the Aztec Empire to current day fair trade movements in places like Ghana and Ecuador. Like wine and coffee, chocolate production and distribution is imbued with geographic elements, such as environmental conditions and global economic factors. In this class, we will sample chocolate products from throughout the world.
