2:00 PM  -  3:30 PM Art Series: Land, People, City

Rena Tobey is back to lead a new art series: Land—People—City

When you think of America, these are the qualities you may think of first. Come explore how American identity has been shaped by images of the land, people, and city with art historian Rena Tobey. In this interactive series of talks, we’ll dig beyond the surface layers that create a streamlined, but simplistic notion of the American character. We’ll take a slow look at paintings that tell complex, often coded stories, reflecting both the challenges and greatness of our country.

City: 4/9

Queen Victoria’s fairytale marriage in 1840 to her cousin Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha launched the happiest period in her life, only coming to an end with his tragically early death 21 years later.  From the start, the Queen adored him, he could do no wrong - so it was fortunate that Albert’s intelligence, enthusiasm and energy balanced the queen’s more emotional and spontaneous responses to her duties. The marriage produced nine children, several of whom occupied European thrones.

~~Presented by Patricia Carr, who has previously presented on English Gardens and Queen Elizabeth at the Avon Library. Patricia Carr was born in England and educated there in private schools. She moved to the U.S. in 1967, and has lived here ever since except for the years 1986-2000 when she joined her husband in Mexico, where he was representing an   American Bank. Mrs. Carr has a strong background in British history,   literature and the fine arts and has been giving talks on various aspects of these subjects for more than twenty years, here and in Mexico. She is particularly drawn to biographies, and many of her talks concentrate of such people as Charles Darwin, Florence Nightingale, Lord Byron - and of course Queen Victoria, our present Queen and other members of the royal family, including all of Queen Victoria’s many children.
