1984, by George Orwell

Winston Smith is a member of the Outer Party. He works in the Records Department in the Ministry of Truth, rewriting and distorting history. To escape Big Brother's tyranny, at least inside his own mind, Winston begins a diary — an act punishable by death.

Amee Mody and Tina Panik invite you to the community room for another fabulous Indian holiday!

Diwali is a Hindu Festival of Lights, celebrated to honor Rama-chandra, the seventh avatar (incarnation of the god Vishnu).       On this day Rama returned to his kingdom after 14 years of exile during which he fought and won a battle against the demons and the demon king, Ravana. Diwali also has a special significance in Jainism. It marks the anniversary of Nirvana or liberation of Mahavira's soul, the 24th Jain Tirthankara of present cosmic age and celebrated at the same time.

~~This celebration is brought to you by the dynamic team of Avon residents that produced our “Celebration of India’s Spring Festivals” program in early 2017.

Film & discussion of  the Ruth Gruber story based on the book "Haven"  by Ruth Gruber, presented by Edee Tenser

The true, inspiring story of the efforts of Ruth Gruber to save almost a thousand Christian and Jewish refugees from war by bringing them across the Atlantic to New York and granting them a safe haven from the Holocaust.  When the refugees arrive in New York they are forced to live in an internment camp where they live in fear of deportation and despair of ever having a home.  Ultimately, Ruth must fight for the refugees’ rights to belong and to have a permanent home in the United States.

Edee Tenser is an educator, college professor, and English teacher who specializes in social justice, humanities and human rights, and the lessons of the Holocaust.

Presented in partnership with the Jewish Historical Society of Greater Hartford

Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury

Set in the 24th century, Fahrenehiet 451 tells the story of the protagonist, Guy Montag. At first,  Montag takes pleasure in his profession as a fireman, burning illegally owned books and the homes of their owners. However, Montag soon begins to question the value of his profession and, in turn, his life.
