Book Talk & Signing

Connecticut author, Phil Goduti returns to Avon Library to talk about his latest book, "RFK and MLK"

Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr., lived parallel lives. Their leadership helped millions of Americans recover from the assassination of John F. Kennedy and inspired hopes for a more peaceful, egalitarian society (which endured well after in their own tragic deaths just five years later). Their rhetoric addressed the pervasive issues of the era—poverty, war and civil rights—and encouraged young people and the disadvantaged throughout the United States and the world. This book examines their shared vision through their speeches, writings and public appearances during the cultural groundshift of 1963 through 1968.

Books will be for sale at this event!

Chocolates of the World!

~~Chocolate is a luxury food that is loved (and craved) globally. In this course, we will go on a journey of chocolate from the currency of the Aztec Empire to current day fair trade movements in places like Ghana and Ecuador. Like wine and coffee, chocolate production and distribution is imbued with geographic elements, such as environmental conditions and global economic factors. In this class, we will sample chocolate products from throughout the world.

Led by Dr. Pope
Samples will be served!

~~Dr. Pope is a Professor of Geography at CCSU and teaches all levels of human geography courses, including a course on the Geography of Coffee. She came to this specialty after her scholarship and teaching in and about Latin America and the Caribbean. She also teaches and conducts research in Medical Geography, and her countries of focus are Cuba and Belize.

~~Join us for an evening of reflective political and personal  discussion with one of our favorite professors!

Dr. Warshauer has studied and talked about the Civil War anniversary in great depth, and wonders how the history and memory of 9/11 will change over time as generations that experienced the country’s greatest  terrorist attack move farther and farther from the actual event.  9/11 is a moment in time, yet the political and world issues that face America continue to define and be defined by the attack. This begs the question:
How do we remember 9/11, and how will that change as this  “9/11 generation” of people fades out and times moves on? Join our discussion. All ages welcome.

The Guard, 2011   What happens when an FBI agent, played by Don Cheadle, travels to Ireland to assist with investigating an international drug ring?  Laughs and drama abound! This comedic thriller showcases outstanding performances from both Cheadle and one of Ireland’s top actors, Brendan Gleeson.  Rated R, subtitles.
