Presented by David Frick, CPA, Financial Professional, AXA Advisors, LLC

Often the term “Special Needs Trust” is mentioned to individuals or caretakers of persons with disabilities, which does nothing but bring up questions such as: Who actually needs a Special Needs Trust?, What is its purpose?, How do they work?, Are they expensive?, When should one be put into place?,  How is one setup? During this seminar we will seek to provide some general answers to these questions and others.  We will also talk about next steps to resolve all of your questions surrounding Special Needs Trusts.  If you are an individual or caretaker of a person with disabilities and do not have a Special Needs Trust or forgot why you have one, this is a discussion for you!  In conjunction with this topic, we will discuss how a PA ABLE account can fit into the financial plan for a special needs individual.

1:00 PM AUTHOR TALK: CARLETON YOUNG

Castle Shannon resident, Carleton Young, will discuss how finding Civil War-era letters in his family attic in Pittsburgh led him to write Voices from the Attic. Imagine clearing out your family attic and discovering hundreds of letters written during the Civil War. Faced with that situation, and not knowing why his family had the letters, the author uses the resources of Ancestry.com and other sources to discover how two Vermont soldiers fit into his family heritage. Using excerpts from their letters, which are filled with in-depth accounts of battles and army life, he weaves together their dramatic war-time narrative into the context of the war and adds in additional information about the friends and relatives who fought by their side.

7:00 PM CHRISTOPHER D. GEORGE: DAY-BY-DAY WITH THE 123RD PENNSYLVANIA VOLUNTEERS

Christopher D. George, a former Bethel Park resident, will share how he discovered the unique story of the 123d Pennsylvania Volunteers while delving into the genealogy of his own family. This Civil War regiment, comprised almost entirely of young men from Allegheny County, was led into battle by a Presbyterian minister during some of the darkest days for the North. Mr. George will bring the story of these “Christian soldiers” to life by sharing the journals they kept as well as the extensive coverage they received within the local Pittsburgh newspapers.

Christopher D. George, a former resident of the 2nd Ward of Allegheny City, is a graduate of both the University of Cincinnati and the University of Pittsburgh. He teaches in the Upper St. Clair School District near Pittsburgh, PA. An avid genealogist, he has spent nearly 20 years researching his great-great-grandfather and the time he served as a member of the 123d Pennsylvania Volunteers. He was presented with the William Rimmel Award in 2017 by the Allegheny City Society for his contribution to the preservation and understanding of that part of Pittsburgh that was known as the city of Allegheny. He was also awarded a 2nd Place TAZ Award (Nonfiction Category) from The Authors’ Zone in 2017. Mr. George has written articles about the men of the 123d PVI for both the Presbyterian Historical Society in Philadelphia and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Previously, he published a family history titled The George Memory Book in 2008. Chris lives with his wife and three children in South Fayette Township, PA. He can be contacted at cdg123pvi@yahoo.com.
