The Summer Reading Program Events kick off on June 20th (2:00-6:00) with our free annual Spring into Summer event hosted by the Friends of Baxter Memorial Library featuring live prince and  princess characters, Happy Hearts Creative Movement, touch-a-truck, face painting, hot dogs, snow cones and more.

   10:00 AM  -  10:45 AM Animal Refuge League  
   

The Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland is visiting the library to present a pet themed story time. The humane educator will teach us how to tell how animals are feeling. We will do some pet themed yoga to practice pet body language and then get to practice meeting a new animal with a furry friend!  Consider bringing a pet supply to share with a needy animal. All ages

   10:00 AM  -  11:00 AM Kevin Hawkes- Fantastical Beasts  
   

Have you ever wanted to conjure up a centaur?  Make a unicorn fly? Or draw a fire-breathing dragon?
Join author/illustrator, Kevin Hawkes, in a fantastical beasts puzzle-making workshop.
During this workshop, Kevin will demonstrate techniques for young artists to help them
create their favorite mythological creatures or invent new ones that have never been seen before.
We will be drawing our own puzzles to take home. Geared towards ages 8 & Up.  Registration for this workshop required.


*After program (around 11am) we will be hosting an all ages meet and greet with Kevin.  Books will be available for sale to be signed.

   6:00 PM  -  7:00 PM Let's Talk Food & Family  
   

There are a variety of challenges when it comes to family meal times; time, evening activities, picking eating, health concerns, meal planning, etc. All parents want their children to eat nutritious foods and to be healthy, competent eaters, but how can we make sure kids get there? Let’s Talk Food & Family will be an interactive discussion between parents and the Registered Dietitian focusing on strategies to take guesswork and stress out of mealtimes.  The discussion will be a no-judgement zone for parents to discuss their questions, concerns, and successes with family meals, and to share meal ideas and feeding resources.

Andrea Paul is a Registered and Licensed Dietitian in Southern Maine. Her experience includes working as a supermarket dietitian, corporate wellness dietitian, and in clinical oncology. She also manages the blog and social media platform Kale, Quinoa & Cookies, which combines two of Andrea’s passions: nutritious and delicious recipes, and cultivating positive relationships with food and body. Andrea finds joy in spending time with loved ones, especially her husband and their dog, Archie, eating delicious food, whether prepared at home or a Portland restaurant, and getting outside for a walk, run, or hike.

STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics.  We have a dedicated STEAM station that can be utilized to explore our world.  We will learn about circuits, measurements, microscopes, magnets, engineering, and more!  This is a drop-in self-led activity.  Ages 3 to 12

If you enjoy reading “I Survived” books, this is the book club for you!  We will meet July 6th to set up our book club and you can pick up a copy of the newest "I Survived" title, “I Survived the Children’s Blizzard, 1888".  We will meet again on July 20th at 10am to discuss the book and enjoy a snack.

No matter your age, I think we all agree that dragons are awesome and tacos are delicious.  Visit the library to hear the books "Dragons Love Tacos" and "Dragons Love Tacos 2".  After the story we will work on a craft and make yummy tacos to eat with plenty of hot sauce!  All ages.

Craft a pot, add a houseplant, and rig a pump to water the plant every 24 hours with the RoboPots program.  This is an introductory project in electronic circuitry, with optional exposure to coding concepts.  It is geared toward ages 10 and up.  Snacks will be provided.  This event is a limited enrollment.  Call 222-1190 to add your name to a list of children interested in the program.
