Blackstone Public Library’s 5th Annual Poetry Contest

March 1- April 21, 2017
The age categories are as follows: Grades K-2, grades 3-5, grades 6-8, grades 9-12, and adult. This poetry contest is open to anyone who wishes to participate.  Please submit one original piece of poetry with the title of your poem prominently displayed at the top of your entry.  Your name will go on the back of the paper on which your poem is printed. Also include your age category, telephone number, and full address on the back of your entry. 

  • All entries must be typed or neatly written. Illegible entries will be discarded.  
  • Individual submissions only. No exceptions.
  • Previously published works of poetry are not allowed. 
  • Entries can be dropped off at the library during regular business hours. 
     
  • Save the date: A poetry reception for all participants is scheduled for Tuesday, May 16 at 6:30 P.M. The winners of each age category will receive a gift card to a local book store, and all participants will receive a certificate of participation. This program is sponsored in part by the Friends of the Blackstone Library.

Heartbeat: A Native American Musical Experience

 Percussionist, educator,and the author of Heartbeat, Warble, and the Electric Powwow: American Indian Music (University of Oklahoma Press, May 2016), Craig Harris leads this exciting multimedia, participatory, and stereotype-defying celebration of American Indian music. Combining archival recordings, film, historic storytelling, and collective music-making, this 90-minute program ties together Standing Rock, Wounded Knee, and the Trail of Tears and spans from the "heartbeat" of powwow drums and the “warble” of wooden flutes to the electrifying sounds of Native infused rock, jazz, reggae, country music, blues, hip-hip, and electronic dance music.

Local author Debi Graham-Leard wrote her debut mystery after retiring from her marketing position in the custom jewelry industry. Her story was sparked by an abandoned village library in her town. On March 30 at 6:30 p.m., Debi will discuss the various phases of writing a mystery, from initial idea through developing characters, creating the fictional town and dreaming up a problem.  Throughout the talk see Bebi's collection of how-to books to hone your craft.

       The Blackstone Public Library will be hosting its first Open Mic Night, hosted by musician John Rice.             
       Local aspiring musicians and artists are invited to perform in front of a live audience.

Please join us for Simple Techniques
to Release Your Inner Artist
with instructor Janet SchwartzThis hands-on program for aspiring artists is designed to help adults overcome the stumbling block of perception and focus on seeing what is really there.
Ms. Schwartz will begin the program with a slide show presenting concepts and examples. Then working from a project image, she will use pastels to demonstrate the technique and guide participants to see and paint their subjects in darks, lights and mid-tones; focusing on the individual’s perception of the objects.
