Louise Sturgess, Executive Director of the Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation will be at the Library to present the program Memorable Places/Recent Changes in Pittsburgh. This is a visual feast -- including 255 images in all -- showing memorable places in the Golden Triangle and in areas north, east, and south of downtown that have undergone recent changes as a result of restorations, adaptive-use projects, and new construction. This interactive presentation draws on participants' memories and knowledge of Pittsburgh and reveals how historic preservation efforts have helped create a city of great beauty and character.

Not sure what to do with your kitchen scraps, leaves, and lawn and garden debris? Would you like natural, home-made compost for your lawns and garden beds? Expand your recycling efforts to include kitchen scraps and yard debris. You will receive a composting bin at class! This workshop thoroughly covers the importance and benefits of composting, the process, setting up a compost pile, proper maintenance, and ways of using finished compost. Participants will receive a FreeGarden EARTH compost bin with attendance. This bin, ideal for urban and suburban areas, has an eighty-two-gallon capacity. Cost: $70/individual or $75/couple including one compost bin. Join us for this beginner genealogy program. Participants will learn the process involved in searching for family roots - how to find the who, when, and where of your family! Beginning with information gathering from family tradition and oral history interviews, the methodology of recording, organizing, and storing your family history is reviewed. Resources discussed will include census schedules, vital records and courthouse resources, church and cemetery records, and immigration and naturalization

The presenter, Marilyn Cocchiola Holt, MLS, is Library Services Manager of the Pennsylvania Department of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh and President of the Western Pennsylvania Genealogical Society, and is an Honorary Vice President of the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania. Ms. Holt has worked with genealogical patrons for 32 year and has presented numerous programs on local and family history topics, as well as teaching courses on genealogy since 1988.

Join us for the AARP Driver Safety 4-Hour Refresher Course. You must show proof that you have completed an 8-hour AARP Class in the past to take this refresher. The cost is $15 for AARP Members and $20 for Non-Members. Proof of AARP membership is required for the discounted rate. Checks are required and can be made out to AARP. Pre-registration with payment is required. Participants 55 and older may receive a 5% discount off of their car insurance for completing this 4-Hour Refresher Class. This course is recommended for those wanting to learn the effects of aging on driving.
