You're invited to join us for a discussion of Jlie Otsuka's When the Emperor Was Divine, this month's book pick.

A precise, understated gem of a first novel, Julie Otsuka's When the Emperor Was Divine tells one Japanese American family's story of internment in a Utah enemy alien camp during World War II. Events are viewed from numerous characters' points of view, and the different perspectives are defined by distinctive, lyrically simple observations. It is written in deceptively tranquil prose, a distillation of injustice, anger, and poetry; a notable debut. (reviews from Amazon.com)

Read The Help by Kathryn Stockett and you'll know why it spent more than 100 weeks on The New York Times Best Seller List.

“Set in the rural South of the 1960's, The Help is a startling, resonant portrait of the intertwined lives of women on opposite sides of the racial divide. Stockett's many gifts – a keen eye for character, a wicked sense of humor, the perfect timing of a natural born storyteller – shine as she evokes a time and place when black women were expected to help raise white babies, and yet could not use the same bathroom as their employers. Her characters, both white and black, are so fully fleshed they practically breathe – no stock villains or pious heroines here. I'm becoming an evangelist for The Help. Don't miss this wise and astonishing debut.”
–Joshilyn Jackson, Bestselling author of Gods in Alabama

Jonathan Safran Foer's novel, Everything is Illuminated will be the subject of our discussion this month.

The fabled history of his grandfather's shtetl, or village, is juxtaposed with events in the present using comedy interspersed with tragedy. Generations become united across time in this fanciful tale, as Foer, the author, gives the reader a contemporary version of 19th-century Jewish drama one that blends laughter and tears.

“A beautiful portrait of being in Paris in the glittering 1920s—as a wife and as one’s own woman.” That's the description that Entertainment Weekly wrote about this month's pick: The Paris Wife, by Paula McLain

The Paris Wife is a more ambitious effort than just a Hallmark version of Americans in Paris. It's an imaginative homage to Hadley Richardson Hemingway, whose quiet support helped her young husband become a writer, and it gives readers a chance to see the person Hemingway aspired to be before fame turned him into something else. He introduces the reader to real people who suffer from a variety of neurological syndromes which include symptoms such as amnesia, uncontrolled movements, and musical hallucinations. Their stories are recounted in a riveting, compassionate, and thoughtful manner. (from Publisher's Weekly and the Book Description.)

Lionel Shriver, the author of this month's choice: We Need to Talk about Kevin, is widely published as a journalist, writing features, columns, op-eds, and book reviews for the Guardian, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, the Economist, Marie Claire, and many other publications.

Eva never really wanted to be a mother—and certainly not the mother of a boy who ends up murdering seven of his fellow high school students, a cafeteria worker, and a much-adored teacher who tried to befriend him, all two days before his sixteenth birthday. Now, two years later, it is time for her to come to terms with marriage, career, family, parenthood, and Kevin’s horrific rampage, in a series of startlingly direct correspondences with her estranged husband, Franklin. Uneasy with the sacrifices and social demotion of motherhood from the start, Eva fears that her alarming dislike for her own son may be responsible for driving him so nihilistically off the rails.     This month's book selection is Homer & Langley by E.L. Doctorow.  Here, in the author's own words, is his description of the book:

"In one sense I think of Homer & Langley as a road novel--as if they are two people traveling together down a road and having adventures, though in fact they are housebound. It turns out that the world will not let them alone--others intrude on their privacy as if it is the road running through them. As for their collecting, I think of them as curators of their life and times, and their house as a museum of all our lives. That is my idea of them, that is my reading of the Collyer myth. I make them to be two brothers who opted out of civilization and pulled the world in after them." --E.L. Doctorow

John Partington, who was once the chief of police in Cumberland and Arlene Violet, a past RI attorney general, are the authors of The Mob and Me: wiseguys and the witness protection program - the subject of our book discussion this month.

A never-before-seen portrait of members of the underworld and law enforcement. Lifting a cloak of confidentiality and controversy, The Mob and Me immerses readers in the rarified, misunderstood world of Witness Protection. (from the Book Description)

Dark Tide: the great Boston molasses flood of 1919 by Stephen, Puleo is this month's book choice.

Around noon on January 15, 1919, a 50-foot-tall steel tank filled with 2.3 million gallons of molasses collapsed on Boston's waterfront, disgorging its contents as a 15-foot-high wave of molasses that at its outset traveled at 35 miles an hour. This non-fiction book recounts that event.

This month's pick is The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey.

In this, her haunting, evocative debut novel, Ivey stakes her claim on a Russian fairy tale, daring the reader--and the characters--to be lulled into thinking they know the ending. With the transparent prose of a fairy tale and descriptions to put nature writing to shame, The Snow Child immerses readers in a 1920s Alaska that will draw them back again and again.
