10:30 AM  -  12:30 PM Artist Meet & Greet: Anne E. Bianchi, Lori Jeremiah & Joanne Morrisey

During the month of August, three area artists will be presenting their collective works in the Library’s Hayden Art Gallery for an exhibit entitled “Natural Selections.” The artists include Ann E. Bianchi of West Warwick, Lori Jeremiah of Narragansett, and Joanne Morrissey of Foster. The exhibit will be accessible on the second floor whenever the library is open. As part of the exhibit, the library will be hosting an artist meet and greet on Saturday, August 19 from 10:30 am – 12:30 pm.

Ann E. Bianchi has been painting and creating original art for over 50 years with oils and acrylics in an Impressionistic style, focusing on light and shadows. Her painting are usually created within limited sessions, choosing to showcase “moments in time”, often in plein air or from themes of antiquity. Bianchi enjoys painting while on ocean cruises with her husband and two sons. She has been teaching Visual Arts in high school for over 27 years, while also organizing many art presentations, demonstrations and workshops. She enjoys teaching classes at the Wickford Art Association, South County Art Association, and for many private organizations throughout Rhode Island. She exhibits her paintings of nature, culture, and historical landmarks in juried art shows, solo and private shows, and participates in many fundraiser events. Bianchi believes art should be “exciting and relaxing!!” She is a juried artist member of Wickford Art Association, South County Art Association, East Greenwich Art Club and Warwick Art Museum. On her website, www.annebianchi.com, visitor can see her latest work. Contacts for commissions, classes, private demonstrative painting events, or purchases are also available through this website.

Lori Jeremiah specializes in pastel and watercolor paintings and finds inspirations in scenes of nature, such as rocky shores, crashing waves, waterfalls, sunlit paths and beautiful faces. For Jeremiah, attempting to paint the surrounding beauty is never ending and always challenging. According to her, she “ strive[s] to capture those fleeting moments, often brief and unexpected, in my paintings.” Starting from youth classes at the Tonoff Gallery in Providence, art has always been a big part of Jeremiah’s life. After studying textiles and art in college, she has enjoyed a teaching career that has spanned more than 32 years. Upon her retirement in 2009, she now enjoy art full time, with memberships in the Wickford Art Association, the South County Art Association, the Rhode Island Watercolor Society, the East Greenwich Art Association, and the Warwick Center for the Arts. More of her work can be seen at www.lorijeremiah.com.

Joanne Morrissey feel fortunate to have been raised by parents who appreciated the arts. Her father was an artist and exposed her to many art events and museums. The elementary and middle schools she attended provided excellent art classes along with teachers that were knowledgeable and encouraging. When Morrissey retired, she had the time to begin taking painting seriously. Morrissey have taken classes for many years at RISD, South County Art Association and Wickford Art Association. When work on her projects, she is most inspired by the beauty of the Rhode Island landscape. Morrissey especially enjoys painting outdoors in the early morning or late day to capture brilliant colors. Morrissey is a member of a plein air group called Painting Around. Every week the group visits various locations in Rhode Island to paint. Morrissey is a juried artist member of the South County Art Association and a member of Wickford Art Association and exhibits at both of these galleries.

For more information about the exhibit or meet and greet event, please contact Aaron Coutu at 333-2552 x2 or acoutu@cumberlandlibrary.org. Area artists interested in booking a future exhibit may also contact Coutu.

Our Financial Stability course continues with Mike Speidel and this week we are tackling debt and credit. There are good kinds of debt as well as bad and Mike will make sure you know the difference by the end of the evening. He will also discuss how to get your free credit score and why it matters. Choosing the right credit card for your needs and avoiding predatory lenders is a concern for everyone.  Finally, Mike will share with you the best (and least expensive) ways to get out of debt if you find you are already in over your head.  This is great information for everyone, but essential if you want to buy a home, get a small business loan, or make another big life move in the next few years.

This series is 16+. Registration is required.  Reserve your space today!

The Cumberland Writer’s Group is for people who are serious about writing.  This group is led by local writer Heather MacIntyre. Monthly, writers will get together to read, critique, and support each other as they move through the writing and publishing process.

Since time is limited at each meeting, the following guidelines have been put into place to ensure that everyone has a chance to receive feedback about their work.

Members are allowed the following pieces per session:

1 short story

1 manuscript chapter

1 poem

1 scene or act from a play

Members will be asked to put their work up on the private listserv at least 2 weeks prior to the next meeting in order to give the group time to read and consider their feedback.

Group Ground Rules

  1. Members must be at least 18.  (The library hosts a very successful writer’s group for teens each month for younger writers who would like the same feedback, experience, and support.)
  2. All members of the group will be given an opportunity to present their work.  This means that everyone may not have a chance to have a piece critiqued at every meeting.
  3. New members are always welcome.  New members may need to critique for a month or two before presenting their work to the group in order to allow all members an opportunity to present.  New members will be taken in the order they joined the group for presenting their work.
  4. Fan fiction and adult erotica will not be given feedback.  While we respect the value of these pieces, this is not the best forum in which to receive substantial feedback that could help in the publishing process.
  5. All members are required to show respect for the other members of the group.  There will be no genre bashing, personal attacks, or other bad behavior allowed. Any member of this group who is not constructive to a successful atmosphere may be asked to leave.

This adults-only program welcomes long-time fans and newbies to have the full viewing experience in watching this classic cult favorite.  It's the weird and wonderful as newly engaged couple Brad and Janet encounter a problem when they car halts in the rain. They both look for contact only to find themselves at the castle of Dr. Frank-N-Furter a transvestite. A place to stay is offered, but will Brad and Janet want to remain there? Especially when a large group of Transylvanians dance to the 'Time Warp', Dr. Frank-N-Furter builds his own man and a whole host of participation for the audience to enjoy.

Participants are encouraged to register as space will be limited.  Participants are also welcome to bring their own prop kits.  You can find a list of items to include in your kit at
http://www.rockyhorror.com/participation/proplist.php.  The library just asks that you do not bring the messier items on the prop list.  The library will also have props available for use by attendees.

Popcorn and beverages will be served. No registration is required.  Those interested in registering or to ask questions about the series can call the library at 333-2552 x2 or can email Aaron at
