5:30 PM  -  7:30 PM Artist Meet & Greet: Michael Perron
    Contact: Aaron Coutu   401-333-2552 x2   aaroncoutu@aol.com

Local artist Michael Perron of Pawtucket, will be exhibiting a number of his paintings in the Library’s Hayden Art Gallery during the month of July. The exhibit will be accessible on the second floor whenever the library is open.  As part of the exhibit, the library will be hosting an artist meet and greet on Thursday, July 6 from 5:30 – 7:50 pm.

Michael Perron took his first art class junior year in high school and was both encouraged and inspired by his public school art teacher, who saw that he had talent. He was encouraged to submit pieces for recognition and won. Perron went on to take art classes outside of school and decided to pursue art by attending UMASS Dartmouth, taking a broad slate of studio courses ranging from metal fabrication, furniture design, ceramics, calligraphy, jewelry/metals, and of course, painting. He began teaching in Sharon, Massachusetts, in 1998, where he continues his work as a special education teacher in the public high school.  Perron is also a part-time instructor of teen oil painting at Hunakai Studio of Fine Art in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

Perron’s painting styles range from realistic to impressionistic, where the more representational works sometimes tell a story. His subjects sometimes are portraits of his family, landscapes, or still-lifes. He always attempts to capture the constant contrasting light and dark values, common to all subjects, in his painting. He is heavily influenced by the work of Edward Hopper and Auguste Renoir, and takes his inspiration from their treatment of light. According to Prron, “Art should tell us something about the time we live in, and not be always concerned with creating pretty images. It puts us in a specific time and place, speaking to certain timeless truths; things we have always seen, and at the same time, somehow comments on how we deal with these truths, in a positive light, or negative.”

Perron has also exhibited work at the Westerly Public library, and at Hunakai Studio of Fine Art, where he teaches.

For more information about the exhibit or meet and greet event, please contact Aaron Coutu at 333-2552 x2 or acoutu@cumberlandlibrary.org.  Area artists interested in booking a future exhibit may also contact Coutu.

The Cumberland Writer’s Group is for people who are serious about writing.  This group is led by local writer Heather MacIntyre. Monthly, writers will get together to read, critique, and support each other as they move through the writing and publishing process.

Since time is limited at each meeting, the following guidelines have been put into place to ensure that everyone has a chance to receive feedback about their work.

Members are allowed the following pieces per session:

1 short story

1 manuscript chapter

1 poem

1 scene or act from a play

Members will be asked to put their work up on the private listserv at least 2 weeks prior to the next meeting in order to give the group time to read and consider their feedback.

Group Ground Rules

  1. Members must be at least 18.  (The library hosts a very successful writer’s group for teens each month for younger writers who would like the same feedback, experience, and support.)
  2. All members of the group will be given an opportunity to present their work.  This means that everyone may not have a chance to have a piece critiqued at every meeting.
  3. New members are always welcome.  New members may need to critique for a month or two before presenting their work to the group in order to allow all members an opportunity to present.  New members will be taken in the order they joined the group for presenting their work.
  4. Fan fiction and adult erotica will not be given feedback.  While we respect the value of these pieces, this is not the best forum in which to receive substantial feedback that could help in the publishing process.
  5. All members are required to show respect for the other members of the group.  There will be no genre bashing, personal attacks, or other bad behavior allowed. Any member of this group who is not constructive to a successful atmosphere may be asked to leave.

Want to brush up on your reading skills?  Love dogs? Practice reading with a therapy dog who loves to listen to stories! The Children’s Room is hosting this unique program from 6:00-7:00 pm and will have a drop-in format, no registration required.  Readers, age 12 and under, will have a 15-minute reading session, first come, first served.

There’s nothing better than a book in your hand and a fluffy friend by your side!  Participants should bring a book with them so they are ready to read to the therapy dog when it is their turn.  Please note: This program is for children who are reading on their own - age 12 and under. All volunteer teams provided by Windwalker Pet Therapy.
