The Reverend Jacob Bailey: The Faith of a Loyalist Reverend Bailey came to Pownalborough (now Dresden) in the province of Maine as an Anglican missionary preacher. Against a background of 18th century culture and politics, this outspoken Loyalist refused to read the Declaration of Independence from his pulpit and ended up leaving Maine for the safety of Nova Scotia. James S. Leamon graduated from Bates College and earned his Ph.D. in American Colonial History at Brown University. He taught early American history and historical archaeology at Bates College from 1964 until his retirement in 2000. His book, Revolution Downeast: The War for American Independence in Maine, won the New England Historical Association’s annual book award.     Contact: Douglas Dransfield, M.D.   207-749-8551   dougdrans@mac.com
Nuclear weapons were at the center of the Cold War and Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) formed over 50 years ago to alert people to the medical consequences of nuclear atmospheric testing and to make clear there is not adequate medical response to nuclear war. With the end of the Cold War many people think today that the current danger of nuclear weapons is only in the spread to terrorists or new nations. The Maine PSR will present a lecture and video discussing the potential humanitarian and medical consequences of nuclear weapons, followed by a discussion period about the public's views on the issue of our security and the role of nuclear weapons.

This session will focus on some of the elements that go into crafting a mystery novel. Creating credible and distinctive characters, both good and bad. The importance of setting and the role it plays. What are the basics of mystery plotting—what is that all-important framework on which we hang our stories. What are some strategies for planting clues? How do mystery writers create tension page-by-page?
