This is an exciting, well-crafted historical novel by Greer Macallister featuring Kate Warne, the first female Pinkerton detective in 1856 Chicago. Kate is a widow and needs a job, convincing Allan Pinkerton that a female detective can go places and do things a male detective cannot. Once hired, Kate becomes skilled at lock picking and surveillance, but she is best in disguise—as a prostitute, rich matron, spinster, clerk, Southern belle, doting sister, and false friend—an expert liar, playing a role. She investigates burglaries, bank robberies, embezzlement, counterfeiting, blackmail, and murder. The Pinkerton Detective Agency is a man’s world, and Kate is forced to prove herself, especially when someone tries to discredit her. She eventually earns the respect of her fellow detectives, learning a secret to be used later. Kate carries a pistol, but her wit, careful observation, and boldness see her through tricky and unexpected situations with desperate, dangerous criminals.

12:30 PM  -  1:30 PM March Lunchtime Book Discussion
    Contact: Kathy Wilson   203-736-1482

This month's featured book will be “Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis” by J.D. Vance.

This memoir is a powerful account of growing up in the rust belt of Ohio and in an Appalachian town in Kentucky. The author escapes generations of poverty becoming a marine and Yale Law School graduate. This is a probing look at the struggles of America's working class. The Vance family story begins in postwar America. J. D.’s grandparents were “dirt poor and in love,” and moved north from Kentucky’s Appalachia region to Ohio in the hopes of escaping the poverty around them.

Ron Howard is directing and producing a movie adaptation of the book, which was a New York Times best-seller.

Lunchtime Book Discussions are held on the last Wednesday of the month and are free and open to the public. Multiple copies of the book will be available at the circulation desk.

Drop-ins are welcome--no registration required.  For further information contact the Reference Desk at 203-736-1482.

The featured novel  is The Little Paris Bookshop by Nina George.

Monsieur Perdu calls himself a literary apothecary. From his floating bookstore in a barge on the Seine, he prescribes novels for the hardships of life. Using his intuitive feel for the exact book a reader needs, Perdu mends broken hearts and souls. The only person he can’t seem to heal through literature is himself; he’s still haunted by heartbreak after his great love disappeared. She left him with only a letter, which he has never opened. The Little Paris Bookshop is a love letter to books, meant for anyone who believes in the power of stories to shape people's lives.

Lunchtime Book Discussions are held on the last Wednesday of the month and are free and open to the public. Multiple copies of the book will be available at the circulation desk.
