READ AWAY YOUR FINES IN SEPTEMBER

Our Read Away Fines program is for ANYONE and ANY AGE! All you need is your own Derby Public Library card in order to participate. The Library will waive a penny of fines for a minute of reading, and you can read up to $10.00 of your Derby Public Library fines away during September. You can read whatever you want and any kind of reading counts. Doing homework? Studying for a test? Reading for your job? Reading comic books? Mom or Dad reading to you? This reading time all counts. Young adults may also read to or with younger children, and both of you can get credit for the time. If you are 11 years old or younger, a parent or guardian needs to initial the time you read and sign the 2018 Read Away Fines form in order for you to get credit. Our “Read Away Fines” Program starts on September 1 and ends on September 30, 2018.

NOTE: You cannot read away the cost of a lost or damaged item, read ahead for fines not yet accrued, read away fines from another library, or read away fines from someone else's card.

To get started, simply ask for a “Read Away Fines” form at the Children’s or Circulation Desks, or download and print the Read Away Fines form from our website www.derbypubliclibrary.org. Bring your Read Away Fines form to the Circulation Desk when you come to the Library to get credit and waive your fines.

Derby Public Library’s “Read Away Your Fines” program is modeled after Bozeman Public Library, Bozeman, MT’s “Read Away Your Fines” program

    Contact: Reference Desk   203-736-1482

September's featured book will be "A Piece of the World" by Christina Baker Kline. From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the smash bestseller Orphan Train, this is a stunning and atmospheric novel of friendship, passion and art, inspired by Andrew Wyeth’s mysterious and iconic painting Christina’s World.

To Christina Olson, the entire world is her family farm in the small coastal town of Cushing, Maine. The only daughter in a family of sons, Christina is tied to her home by health and circumstance, and seems destined for a small life. Instead, she becomes Andrew Wyeth’s first great inspiration, and the subject of one of the best-known paintings of the twentieth century, Christina’s World.

As she did in her beloved bestseller Orphan Train, Christina Baker Kline interweaves fact and fiction to vividly reimagine a real moment in history. A Piece of the World is a powerful story of the flesh-and-blood woman behind the portrait, her complicated relationship to her family and inheritance, and how artist and muse can come together to forge a new and timeless legacy.

Lunchtime Book Discussions are held on the last Wednesday of the month and are free and open to the public. Multiple copies of the book will be available at the circulation desk.

Drop-ins are welcome—no registration required.  For further information contact the Reference Desk at 203-736-1482.

12:30 PM  -  1:30 PM October Lunchtime Book Discussion
    Contact: Reference Desk   203-736-1482

October’s featured book will be “The Ocean at the End of the Lane” by Neil Gaiman.

A bewitching and harrowing tale of mystery and survival, and memory and magic, makes the impossible all too real.  A middle-aged man returns to his childhood home to attend a funeral. Although the house he lived in is long gone, he is drawn to the farm at the end of the road, where, when he was seven, he encountered a most remarkable girl, Lettie Hempstock, and her mother and grandmother. He hasn't thought of Lettie in decades, and yet as he sits by the pond (a pond that she'd claimed was an ocean) behind the ramshackle old farmhouse where she once lived, the unremembered past comes flooding back. And it is a past too strange, too frightening, too dangerous to have happened to anyone, let alone a small boy.

A groundbreaking work as delicate as a butterfly's wing and as menacing as a knife in the dark, The Ocean at the End of the Lane is told with a rare understanding of all that makes us human, and shows the power of stories to reveal and shelter us from the darkness inside and out.

Lunchtime Book Discussions are held the last Wednesday of the month and are free and open to the public. Multiple copies of the book will be available at the circulation desk.

Drop-ins are welcome—no registration required.  For further information contact the Reference Desk at 203-736-1482.
