The Derby Library Garden will be getting ready for the new season soon!  On May 11, 2019 at 1:30 PM, Valley United Way staff and community volunteers will be preparing the garden with new vegetables, fruits, and herbs! After a fun filled time, enjoy delicious and creamy ice-cream!

The Grow Your Own Garden Program was created in 2015, by the Valley United Way, to give lower-income families access to fresh produce. This garden season there will be 13 gardens in all 5 Valley towns; Ansonia, Derby, Oxford, Seymour, and Shelton! All fresh produce grown from the gardens are free, for the neighbors to harvest and enjoy. The gardens assist a wide range of communities of families, children, elders and disabled.

If interested in volunteering, contact the Valley United Way office at (203)926-9478 or email valleyunitedway@valleyunitedway.org with your name and interests in the gardens.

He attended Derby public schools and graduated from Notre Dame High School in West Haven. Mr. Sklepowich will share childhood and adolescent memories of The Derby Public Library, which had a formative influence on his life and set him on the path of his fiction-writing, travels, and pursuit of literature as a career.

“So much began for me at The Derby Public Library. My presentation is a small way of trying to repay a huge debt.”

His series of nine books, The Urbino Macintyre Mysteries, is set in Venice, featuring an expatriate American amateur sleuth. The New York Times Book Review, Publishers Weekly, and The Chicago Tribune have praised the series as “thoroughly civilized,” “seductive,” and “elegant.”

Edward received three Fulbright grants to North Africa and taught in Italy, Egypt, and Algeria before his current teaching position in Tunisia. Since the 1990s he has been senior professor of American and Anglophone Literature at the University of Tunisia in the Mediterranean town of Sousse. Are you interested in reading, writing or exploring the world of poetry?  Susan Lanzaro-Schroeder will lead this open discussion and member devotion to positive feedback and the joyful appreciation of the creative endeavor. The poems presented can range from the inspirational to the deeply personal, sometimes painful; to the outrageously witty: from sonnets and rhyme, to open verse. Members share their authored poems, solicit input for their developing poems or to share a poem that they find beautiful. Can’t make this night? Other Monday meetings are as follows: October 21, November 18, and December 16. Ages 18 and older welcome! Drop in! For more information visit www.derbypubliclibrary.org or call 203-736-1482.

Lanzaro-Schroeder’s diverse writing experience includes: Literary Editor of Sacred Heart Academy High School, Grant Writer with awards for Job Training via Bridgeport Regional Business Council, earning the Hewlett Packard channel partner status, company patents and licensing agreements and co-founding the Central Florida Poetry group.  Her 35-year collection of poems celebrating nature and humor will be shortly published in “JUKED.”
