 20th Anniversary

REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED; if bringing more than one (1) child, please register each individually.  The Derby Public Library introduces a six-week session of Family Place -1, 2, 3… Grow With Me.  This innovative program is a time for families to share together with their 1-3 year-old childrenSiblings who are age 5 and under are also welcome to attend, but do NOT need to register here .  Each week will feature puzzles, books, blocks, a craft, dramatic play and more followed by a story and rhymes.  Parents/caregivers will also be introduced to some of the many resources available to them to assist in the raising of their toddlers and have an opportunity to meet new friends in an educational and creative environment.

A resource professional from the community will be available on several of the Mondays during these sessions to discuss parenting questions and concerns.  Topics will include child development, nutrition, immunization and more.  Do not miss the opportunity to consult with experts on a no-fee basis while your child enjoys a wonderful play experience.  Families are encouraged to attend each week to obtain the full benefits of this multi-week session.

The Family Place is a national initiative of Americans for Libraries Council and Middle Country Library.  The Family Place of Connecticut is made possible through the generous support of the Katharine Matthies Foundation.

The harmonica is a worldwide instrument voicing the music of hundreds of cultures. And one simple reason could be its SIZE. What has intrigued many in the music community is its ability, when played by masters, to encompass all genres of musical style, from Classical to Jazz to Near Eastern to Irish to Blues to Country, etc. Using storytelling, historical facts and playing the instrument in many styles, Bob Hennessy tells the story of "The World of Harmonica".

The Derby Public Library has scheduled an after-school winter-themed Crafty Kids program.  The program, which is open to kids ages 4-11, offers an opportunity to explore their creativity with a different art or craft project each class.  Participants will be working on themed creations to embellish the Children’s Room wall mural. There is no fee to attend and materials will be supplied.  Snacks will also be provided.

This is a great opportunity for beginner or reluctant readers - as well as experienced readers - to build confidence, enhance literary skills achieved during the school year, and develop a love of reading.

Children will be given a 20 minute time slot to read and may select a book from Ollie’s Book Picks to share with him for the program.

  • BINGO cards are available at the Circulation Desk and can be downloaded from the library’s website starting January 2, 2019.
  • Completed cards may be turned in at the Circulation Desk.
  • Cards must be received by Thursday, February 28 in order to be entered in the drawing.  You may submit more than one finished BINGO card.  The winning ticket will be drawn on Friday, March 1.

A resource professional from the community will be available on several of the Mondays during these sessions to discuss parenting questions and concerns.  Topics will include child development, nutrition, immunization and more.  Do not miss the opportunity to consult with experts on a no-fee basis while your child enjoys a wonderful play experience.  Families are encouraged to attend each week to obtain the full benefits of this multi-week session.

Award winning guitarist Francesco Barone will present a recital of guitar music from Eastern and Western Europe. The first half of the program will feature the music of Western Europe, including Italian composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco's Tarentella as well as lute suite by Johann Sebastian Bach, whose works are known to represent the regional styles Italy, France and Germany. The second half will include music of Eastern Europe, including the Ballads Suite by Russian composer Nikita Koshkin.

Francesco has performed throughout the Northeast United States and in Italy as a soloist and chamber musician. He has been featured on a La Bella Strings sponsored concert, was a prizewinner in the Philadelphia Classical Guitar Society Competition and has had performances broadcasted on NPR. He received a MM from and is a current DMA candidate at The Hartt School, where he studies under Professor Emeritus of Guitar Richard Provost and holds a BM from Temple University.
