Speaker: Eleanor Strang

The Boston Massacre on March 5, 1770, is a window into a turbulent and fascinating period of American history – the beginnings of the American Revolution in Boston.  We will explore what led up to the event, and how it was used to mold public opinion.   We will examine the role of Sam Adams and Paul Revere in the opinion-molding process, and the surprising role of John Adams, including why and how he defended the British soldiers in the ensuing trials.   We will look at the changing portrayals of Crispus Attucks, and see that history isn’t an unchanging account of the “facts,” but instead changes depending on who tells the story, and why, and when.

6:30 PM  -  8:00 PM 12,000 Years Ago in the Granite State
Contact: Liz Ryan, Adult Services Librarian   432-6140   lizr@derrypl.org

The native Abenaki people played a central role in the history of the Monadnock region, defending it against English settlement and forcing the abandonment of Keene and other Monadnock area towns during the French and Indian Wars. Despite this, little is known about the Abenaki, and conventional histories often depict the first Europeans entering an untamed, uninhabited wilderness, rather than the homeland of people who had been there for hundreds of generations. Robert Goodby discusses how the real depth of native history was revealed when an archaeological study prior to construction of the new Keene Middle School discovered traces of four structures dating to the end of the Ice Age. Undisturbed for 12,000 years, the site revealed information about the economy, gender roles, and household organization of the Granite State's very first inhabitants, as well as evidence of social networks that extended for hundreds of miles across northern New England.

Presented in part with NH Humanities.

Join us for an insightful evening as we take a look at the facts surrounding Betty and Barney Hill’s UFO encounter in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. On September 19th, 1961 the Hill’s lives would be forever changed and the events of that night would make history. Their experiences would come to be known as one of the highest regarded alien abduction cases in the world. Who were Betty and Barney Hill? Were they credible?  What happened on that fateful September night? Was this the first abduction case? Is there any evidence?   We welcome you to join us on the 57th anniversary of the Hill’s encounter, as we answer these questions and many more.

Encountering History will be presented by Mike Stevens, founder of Granite Sky. Granite Sky is a New Hampshire based organization that focuses on providing support to those who have had extraterrestrial encounters. Mike is a seasoned paranormal researcher and investigator. He has worked to change the stigma surrounding the abduction phenomena by promoting public awareness of the subject and by encouraging and supporting other experiencers.  He was the initiating force behind the New Hampshire historical marker for Betty and Barney Hill’s UFO encounter. Mike has been interviewed in the past by newspapers, television, and radio about his involvement in the paranormal and UFO communities locally as well as internationally.
