Contact: Liz Ryan, Adult Services Librarian   432-6140   lizr@derrypl.org

Patrick Anderson focuses on contemporary film directors and screenwriters in the United States whose originality, independence and unconventional approaches to the medium have contributed to the evolution of the industry. The program provides a greater understanding of and appreciation for both the content and form of movies made outside the mainstream Hollywood system, and to consider some of the key differences in theme, style and narrative format between these works and the more conventional fare of so-called "classic cinema."  Among the filmmakers to be examined are Steven Soderbergh, David Lynch, John Sayles, Spike Lee, Quentin Tarantino, the Coen brothers, Wes Anderson, Sofia Coppola, P.T. Anderson, Jim Jarmusch and Charlie Kaufman. Patrick Anderson urges participants to view and analyze a variety of film clips carefully so that, by the end of the session, they will be more visually articulate and critically aware of how one "reads" a film.

TJ Cullinane speaks!

April 6, 2017 marks the 100th Anniversary of America’s entry into World War One. Over 300 Derry men and women would serve in the “Great War for Civilization.” They would deploy along the Mexican Border, at strategic locations in the Panama Canal Zone and sail to Europe as part of the American Expeditionary Force (A.E.F.). Performing duties as diverse as searchlight operator, cartridge maker, and balloon crewman, all too many would fall to German machine gun fire, heavy artillery and gas shells on the green fields of France. Drawing almost exclusively from primary research material uncovered in the Derry History Museum and DPL New Hampshire Room, local historian T.J. Cullinane will break down the town’s involvement in the war in a three-part series. Part One will discuss the Army and Marines, with Part Two covering the Naval Services. The third and final talk will shed light on seven Derry men who opted to serve “King and Country” by joining the Canadian Expeditionary Force. Heavily illustrated with seldom seen photos and artifacts, the series will bring to light the long-forgotten bravery and sacrifices of Derry men and women in the cataclysmic event that many thought would be the “war to end all wars.”

6:30 PM  -  8:00 PM Beyond The Road Not Taken: The Other Poetry of Robert Frost
Contact: Liz Ryan, Adult Services Librarian   432-6140   lizr@derrypl.org

Celebrate National Poetry Month and go beyond Robert Frost's most well known poems! Presented by Derry Poet Laureate Bob Crawford.

There is far more to Robert Frost’s poetry than pleasant walks in the New England woods and wise words from a Yankee insider. “Robert Frost: Beyond the Road Not Taken” will provide ways  of appreciating  and enjoying Robert Frost’s poetry at a deeper level. The talk explores the importance of metaphor—conceiving one thing in terms of another-- in Frost’s poetry and how he used the stone walls, maple trees, the storied fall of the New England landscape, as metaphorical props. Crawford will explore the three distinct levels of his poetry—the denotations, the experience reported by the poem; the connotations, the metaphors of the poem; and the whole experience of the poem itself. Patrons will see how the New England landscape was vital to each level by taking an in-depth look at “The Pasture,” “Hyla Brook,” “Mending Wall,” “The Need for Being Versed in Country Things,” “Stopping by a Wood on a Snowy Evening,” “The Onset,” and “For Once Then Something.” Crawford will conclude with a discussion of what Frost called “Ulteriority” and how Frost’s being an outsider, not a native New Englander helped him to see and use the landscape so effectively.

6:30 PM  -  8:00 PM Restoration of the American Chestnut Tree
Contact: Liz Ryan, Adult Services Librarian   432-6140   lizr@derrypl.org

Less than 100 years ago eastern U.S. forests were dominated by large American chestnut trees. By the 1950s this population was reduced to short-lived stump sprouts. These trees reined over 200 million acres of eastern woodlands from Maine to Florida, and from the Piedmont west to the Ohio Valley, until succumbing to a lethal fungus disease, chestnut blight. An estimated 4 billion American chestnuts, one quarter of the hardwood tree population, grew within this range prior to the blight.

The blight, imported to the US on Asian chestnut trees, is a fungus and its spores are easily dispersed via air, raindrops or animals. It is a wound pathogen, entering through injuries to the tree's bark. It spreads to the underlying vascular cambium and wood, killing these tissues as it advances. The flow of nutrients is eventually choked off to and from sections of the tree above the infection.

Join Wildlife Biologist, Curt Laffin, as he discusses the history and demise of this tree and promising efforts by the American Chestnut Foundation to restore it locally and throughout its historic range.
