TJ Cullinane's third and final World War 1 talk will shed light on seven Derry men who opted to serve “King and Country” by joining the Canadian Expeditionary Force.

A rowdy shoe worker. Two minister’s sons. Milk magnate H.P. Hood’s foreman. These were among the Derry men who by fate or inclination chose to serve “King and Empire” by enlisting in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during World War One. In the third and concluding presentation on Derry in the Great War, local historian T.J. Cullinane will explore the fascinating and sometimes tragic lives of this unique band of brothers. Having learned why place names like Chateau Thierry and Belleau Wood still resonate with Americans, we will discover why the Somme and Vimy Ridge evoke tones of hushed reverence with our neighbors to the north. During the hundredth anniversary year of their great sacrifice, please join us as we explore this little-known aspect of Derry, New Hampshire’s rich historical legacy.

Contact: Liz Ryan, Adult Services Librarian   432-6140   lizr@derrypl.org

Love Game of Thrones? Excited for the new season? Come celebrate and hear about the inspiration for the wars of Westeros!

Presented by Mike Glaeser- University of Sheffield, England

Henry VI, a well-meaning but misguided king, sits on the throne of England. He is manipulated by his family and council who seek to further their own agendas. Rival nobles are overlooked for positions and sent on missions that are political exile in all but name. After enduring years of inept rule and the loss of French territories, the nobility of England split into a tangled web of political alliances favoring one of two royal houses- Lancaster or York. As the historical inspiration behind Game of Thrones, the Wars of the Roses drag England into the early modern era through vicious and bloody dynastic conflict.

This lecture will address the origins of the conflict and determine if either side had a legitimate grievance and firm claim to the throne. We will also explore the etymology and identify when and why the wars actually ended. Artifacts, arms, and armor will be on display as well. Who will you support- the white rose, or the red?

Ramblin' Richard returns!

It was 100 years ago.  The United States declared war on Germany in 1917 and we became participants in World War I.  Europe was in turmoil in the early teens, monarchies were flexing their muscles seeking to expand their borders, and their emboldened leaders brought war to the continent.  The “Great War” had begun a few years earlier in 1914 and ended in 1918 with the November 11 th armistice.   But then an unexpected event burst onto the scene, tragically taking many more lives than the war itself.  Richard tells this compelling story, as well.
