10:00 AM  -  12:00 PM Learn about Ranked Choice Voting
    Contact: Eileen Morgan   5082559585   baygetaway@comcast.net

Ranked Choice Voting is a simple change to the way we vote..........you can rank multiple candidates in the order you prefer them.  Benefits include eliminating the "spoiler effect" to elect a candidate who appeals to a broad base of voters; encouranges voters to choose their true favorite, without settling for the "lesser of two evils"; encourages more candidates to run for office without fear of vote-splitting; rewards candidates who reach beyond their base to find common ground with more voters; tempers intra-party tensions during contested primaries and choosing nominees with a mandate from party voters; eliminates the need for costly, low-turnout preliminary elections for city offices.

Find out more about Ranked Choice Voting by coming to the presentation on Thursday, July 12th at 10:30.  All welcome!

The Association to Preserve Cape Cod's 50th Anniversary Speakers Series continues with a presentation by journalist Susan Freinkel, author of Plastic: A Toxic Love Story.

Description: Plastic built the modern world. But a century into our love affair with plastic, we’re starting to realize it’s not such a healthy relationship. Plastics draw on dwindling fossil fuels, leach harmful chemicals, litter landscapes, and destroy marine life. As Freinkel points out in this engaging and eye-opening book, we’re nearing a crisis point. We’ve produced as much plastic in the past decade as we did in the entire twentieth century. We’re drowning in the stuff, and we need to start making some hard choices.

Bring a dance partner and join us for a fun evening of swing dance instruction. DeeDee and Steve Burke, owners of Shall We Dance in Dennis, will teach participants both basic swing and foxtrot. Then mark your calendars, save the date ~ the Eastham Library will be hosting a community dance on Saturday, October 6th at the Eastham Elks Lodge. A live band (TBA) will perform music of the 40's as well as classic American bandstand numbers and the Burkes will be with us to provide dance instruction there, too.

These community-building events are part of the Library's One Book One Town program sponsored by the Friends of the Eastham Library. This year's featured selection, Wolf Hollow by Cape Cod author Lauren Wolk, is a novel set in rural Pennyslvania during the 1940's. It has garnered awards and accolades including the prestigious Silver Newbery Award, and has been likened to Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird.
