    Contact: Leah Farrell   860-673-6791   lfarrell@farmingtonlibraries.org

Phil Rosenthal performs songs written by legendary folk musician Woody Guthrie (1912-1967). Guthrie's compositions, many now classics, tell of his early years in the Oklahoma dust bowl (Dust Bowl Refugee, So Long It's Been Good to Know You), his travels across the country (Hard Travelin', Ramblin' Round), his concern for the poor and downtrodden (Deportee, Pastures of Plenty), and his love for his homeland (Roll On Columbia, This Land Is Your Land).  Phil talks about Guthrie's life and legacy, and explains the events that inspired the composition of each song.

Phil Rosenthal is an internationally acclaimed singer and songwriter. His compositions have been recorded by Johnny Cash, Bill Monroe, Nick Cave and others. He was lead singer and guitarist in the seminal bluegrass band the Seldom Scene, and is renowned for his skills on mandolin, guitar and banjo. He was selected Connecticut State Troubadour in 1994. Phil has been called "a roots master musician" by Billboard Magazine and "one of the most expressive singers in traditional country music" by the Washington Post. He has performed with Jerry Douglas, Bill Monroe, Emmylou Harris, Jonathan Edwards and many others in his career in folk and bluegrass music.

    Contact: Leah Farrell   860-673-6791 x212   lfarrell@farmingtonlibraries.org

What is the best way to celebrate Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II's 92nd birthday? With a tea party of course!

Janice Connor will review the history of tea drinking, the locations where tea is best cultivated, the varieties and complexities of the tea blends, its health benefits, and why afternoon tea became so fashionable (and still is today). After water, tea is the most consumed beverage in the world!

We will also learn the secrets of making a good cup of tea, after which everyone will get to enjoy a refreshing cup (in a bone china and saucer of course) along with a scone and a piece of the Queen's favorite cake (which she never refuses)!

Space is limited. Registration required.

Janice Connor is a British native and has always enjoyed a good cup of tea! Janice's grandmother operated a tea stall weekly during an outdoor market where farmers would sell produce and auction animals and equipment. As a young girl Janice  helped by picking up the used cups and plates, as her grandmother ran the tea urn and made the sandwiches and chatted with the customers. The market has since been demolished to make way for an enormous steel shopping center but a sign is erected with the historical importance of these markets and the local tea stalls. Janice currently owns a home in Goshen where the kettle is always on for tea!

Join local author Paul Kix for a discussion, reading, and signing of his critically-acclaimed book, The Saboteur: The Aristocrat Who Became France's Most Daring Anti-Nazi Commando.

A scion of one of the most storied families in France, Robert de La Rochefoucauld was raised in a magnificent chateau and educated in Europe’s finest schools. When the Nazis invaded and imprisoned his father, La Rochefoucauld escaped to England and learned the dark arts of anarchy and combat—cracking safes and planting bombs and killing with his bare hands—from a collection of British spies, beloved by Winston Churchill, who altered the war in Europe with their covert tactics. With his newfound skills, La Rochefoucauld returned to France and organized Resistance cells, blew up fortified compounds and munitions factories, interfered with Germany’s wartime missions, and executed Nazi officers. Caught by the Germans, La Rochefoucauld withstood months of torture and escaped his own death sentence, not once but twice. A breathtaking work of narrative nonfiction, as fast-paced and emotionally intuitive as the very best spy thrillers, The Saboteur illuminates this unsung hero of the French resistance, bringing La Rochefoucauld brilliantly to life.

Please register.

APRIL'S BOOK: One Thousand White Women by Jim Fergus

The story of May Dodd and a colorful assembly of pioneer women who, under the auspices of the U.S. government, travel to the western prairies in 1875 to intermarry among the Cheyenne Indians. The covert and controversial "Brides for Indians" program, launched by the administration of Ulysses S. Grant, is intended to help assimilate the Indians into the white man's world. Toward that end May and her friends embark upon the adventure of their lifetime. Jim Fergus has so vividly depicted the American West that it is as if these diaries are a capsule in time.

From March through November 1841, Farmington, Connecticut was home to the African Mendi captives who had rebelled and overtaken the slave-ship, La Amistad. Historical interpreter Kim A. Silva will shine a light on Farmington's surprising role in the aftermath of the uprising through theater, imagery, and American Sign Language.

Farmington 1841 - When the righteous abolitionist leaders plan to supervise Cinque and his Mende warriors, trouble ensues! Abolitionists apologize for their behavior yet again. John Pitkin Norton shivers under the suspicious gaze of the Cinque, known as The Black Prince. Twenty-one-year-old Charlotte Cowles is caring for the Amistad girl, Kagne, but she also has a crush on her favorite handsome eighteen-year-old Amistad hunk. When two of their men are missing after a day of repeated assaults, the Mende march to the rescue of their own and save the lives of their abolitionist friends. Alanson Freeman, a runaway slave, and his wife, Fanny run the boarding house on Main Street. As they provide meals and support to the Amistad Africans, the couple explains the confusing and contradictory manners and laws of Cinque’s ‘Merica.

MAY'S BOOK: The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi

Maya is cursed. With a horoscope that promises a marriage of death and destruction, she has earned only the scorn and fear of her father's kingdom. While Maya is content to follow more scholarly pursuits, her world if torn apart when her father, the Raja, arranges a wedding of political convenience to quell outside rebellions. Soon Maya becomes the queen of Akaran and wife of Amar. Neither roles are what she expected: As Akaran's queen, she finds her voice and power. As Amar's wife, she finds something else entirely: Compassion. Protection. Desire ... But Akaran has its own secrets - thousands of locked doors, gardens of glass, and a tree taht bears memories instead of fruit. Soon, Maya suspects her life is in danger. Yet who, besides her husband, can she trust? With the fate of the human and Otherworldly realms hanging in the balance, Maya must unravel an ancient mystery that spans reincarnated lives to save those she loves the most ... including herself.

Learn about Wills, Trusts, Powers of Attorney, and Healthcare Representatives. You may think that drafting an estate plan is straightforward, but in reality, if you do it wrong, you are jeopardizing everything you have worked for. What is the difference between a Will and a Trust? Why won't a Will be sufficient by itself? Do you need a power of attorney and what should it say? What about health care directives? Should I add my children's names to my bank accounts? We will share real-life stories showing you the dangers of common estate planning mistakes such as using incorrect phrases in your documents or omitting important ones. We’ll also spend some time talking about the probate process.

Connecticut has the second highest cost of long-term care in the nation. So, unless you are planning to leave the state, you need to protect yourself and your retirement assets from long-term care costs. Should you give your home to your children? How can you get assistance paying for a nursing home and home care? How can single individuals and married couples qualify for Medicaid benefits while protecting their children’s inheritances? What is the 5-year look back? How can you spend down? Is long-term care insurance a good idea? If you know the rules and plan ahead, you can still protect your hard-earned assets.

Are you a little less Y and a little more A, but can’t get enough of YA books? It’s ok, no really, it’s okay. This book group is for you! Whether you first found yourself drawn to teen books when the Hunger Games hit the big-screen or if you have been a lifelong fan, this group is for you. Funny, heart-wrenching, time-traveling, world-bending, stereotype shattering YA books have been making a mark on society for decades and it’s time for us adults who love them to stop hiding in the shadows. We meet monthly on the second Monday of the month at 7PM at the Farmington Main Library. A limited number of copies of each book on the list will be available for loan at the library, or bring your own! Refreshments will be provided.

OCTOBER'S BOOK: The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
