6:00 PM  -  8:00 PM Understanding Your Best Friend with Phil the Dog Listener
    Contact: Leah Farrell   860-673-6791   lfarrell@farmingtonlibraries.org

If you want to gain a much better understanding of your dog and its challenging behaviors, then this session led by Phil Klein, Certified Dog Listener, is for you and your family! Learn the simple, dog-friendly changes in how to interact with your dog to transform its behavior in a kind and lasting way. In doing so, you will have a calmer, happier dog and a more enjoyable relationship with it.

Topics covered will include:

  • How canines see the human world.
  • How canines communicate including the importance of eye contact and movement.
  • The underlying reasons for your dog’s behaviors like nervousness, toileting indoors, incessant barking, aggression, jumping on people, pestering for attention, destructive chewing, separation anxiety, pulling on the leash, etc.

Bring your questions, (but unfortunately not your dog) for an informative, fun session!

Please register.

About Phil Klein, Certified Dog Listener

Phil’s path to becoming a Dog Listener started when his family rescued a special dog named Abby from Labs4Rescue.  At the time, he had no idea about the journey he would be privileged to take with Abby.  Abby’s behavioral challenges were the motivation for Phil to learn a lot more about dogs and find a way to help Abby overcome her fears.  In the process, Phil discovered Jan Fennell, The Dog Listener who had developed a revolutionary method for training dogs based on their instincts.  In April 2009, Phil attended Jan Fennell’s Foundation and Advanced Canine Communications courses, thereby becoming a Certified Dog Listener.  Through in-home consultations, volunteer work with Labs4Rescue and other rescue organizations, and public talks, Phil has been honored to help over 1000 dog owners and their dogs.

This program is part of the 2018 Farmington Libraries Summer Reading Program, which this year celebrates the book No Better Friend: One Man, One Dog, and Their Extraordinary Story of Courage and Survival in WWII by Robert Weintraub.

No Better Friend tells the story of Air Force technician Frank Williams and Judy, a purebred pointer, who met in WWII and were POWs in a camp in the Pacific. Judy was loyal, with a keen sense for who was friend and who was foe, and the pair's relationship deepened throughout their captivity. When the prisoners suffered beatings, Judy would interrupt by barking. She survived bombings and other near-death experiences and became a beacon for the men, who saw in her survival a flicker of hope for their own. Judy was WWII's only canine POW, and when she passed away in 1950, she was buried in her Air Force jacket. Williams would never own another dog. Their story--of an unbreakable bond forged in the worst circumstance--is one of the great undiscovered sagas of WWII.

AUGUST'S BOOK: 84, Charring Cross Road by Helene Hanff

This charming classic love story, first published in 1970, brings together twenty years of correspondence between Helene Hanff, at the time, a freelance writer living in New York City, and a used-book dealer in London at 84, Charing Cross Road. Through the years, though never meeting and separated both geographically and culturally, they share a winsome, sentimental friendship based on their common love for books. Their relationship, captured so acutely in these letters, is one that has touched the hearts of thousands of readers around the world.

Are you a little less Y and a little more A, but can’t get enough of YA books? It’s ok, no really, it’s okay. This book group is for you! Whether you first found yourself drawn to teen books when the Hunger Games hit the big-screen or if you have been a lifelong fan, this group is for you. Funny, heart-wrenching, time-traveling, world-bending, stereotype shattering YA books have been making a mark on society for decades and it’s time for us adults who love them to stop hiding in the shadows. We meet monthly on the second Monday of the month at 7PM at the Farmington Main Library. A limited number of copies of each book on the list will be available for loan at the library, or bring your own! Refreshments will be provided.

SEPTEMBER'S BOOK: The Memory Book by Lara Avery

Sammie McCoy is a girl with a plan: graduate at the top of her class and get out of her small town as soon as possible. Nothing will stand in her way-not even the rare genetic disorder the doctors say will slowly steal her memories and then her health.

So the memory book is born: a journal written to Sammie's future self. It's where she'll record every perfect detail of her first date with longtime-crush Stuart, and where she'll admit how much she's missed her childhood friend Cooper. The memory book will ensure Sammie never forgets the most important parts of her life-the people who have broken her heart, and those who have mended it. If Sammie's going to die, she's going to die living.

A documentary and discussion on the impact of the arts on those in incarceration.

Judy Dworin Performance Project (JDPP) is a transformative arts non-profit based in Hartford, CT that - on stage, in schools, in prisons and in the community- innovates, inspires, educates and collaborates. JDPP harnesses the arts as a powerful catalyst for creative expression through riveting dance/ theater performance work, community building and cultivating social justice. As part of this work, JDPP’s Bridging Boundaries program has engaged populations affected by incarceration to reconnect the forced separations that occur within oneself, families and communities. Working collaboratively with social services, JDPP’s unique program model has rendered new opportunities for safer communities, lasting personal change and brighter futures for the children of incarcerated parents.

In 2016, JDPP received a notable national grant from The Mellon Foundation and Mid-America Arts Alliance for Connecticut Public Television to partner with JDPP and create a 30-minute documentary featuring this groundbreaking work as a national demonstration project. In a rare opportunity, “Making Me Whole; Prison, Art, and Healing” takes the viewer inside the prison walls to hear and see firsthand from women and men about the influence Bridging Boundaries has had on them. The footage also sheds light on the struggles that children with incarcerated parents face, and how JDPP in partnership with social workers, helps them navigate their way using the arts to deal with the most often tightly held secret. The film will feature JDPP’s community supporters articulating the value and significance of these programs, and the powerful transformations that come from the continued support to those returning to our communities.

Please join us for a talkback after the film with Judy Dworin and Robin Cullen, a returning citizen who is now a JDPP teaching artist and on the Board of Directors.

SEPTEMBER'S BOOK: Neverhome by Laird Hunt

She calls herself Ash, but that's not her real name. She is a farmer's faithful wife, but she has left her husband to don the uniform of a Union soldier in the Civil War. OCTOBER'S BOOK: The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

Bod is an unusual boy who inhabits an unusual place—he's the only living resident of a graveyard. Raised from infancy by the ghosts, werewolves, and other cemetery denizens, Bod has learned the antiquated customs of his guardians' time as well as their ghostly teachings—such as the ability to Fade so mere mortals cannot see him.

Can a boy raised by ghosts face the wonders and terrors of the worlds of both the living and the dead?

OCTOBER'S BOOK: Brick Lane by Monica Ali

After an arranged marriage to Chanu, a man twenty years older, Nazneen is taken to London, leaving her home and heart in the Bangladeshi village where she was born. Her new world is full of mysteries. How can she cross the road without being hit by a car (an operation akin to dodging raindrops in the monsoon)? What is the secret of her bullying neighbor Mrs. Islam? What is a Hell's Angel? And how must she comfort the naïve and disillusioned Chanu?

As a good Muslim girl, Nazneen struggles to not question why things happen. She submits, as she must, to Fate and devotes herself to her husband and daughters. Yet to her amazement, she begins an affair with a handsome young radical, and her erotic awakening throws her old certainties into chaos.

The museum’s nearly 50,000 works of art span 5,000 years, from Greek and Roman antiquities to the first museum collection of American contemporary art. Presented by the Wadsworth Docent Council. Docents are volunteer educators who guide visitors of all ages through the museum, giving tours and engaging guests in conversation about art. In celebration of the Docent Council’s 50th anniversary, Wadsworth Atheneum docents will visit 50 community sites across the state in 2018, including the Farmington Libraries!

Find out what how the Town of Farmington can help you care for your loved ones!

Caring for an elderly and disabled family member or close friend is one of the most important—and complicated—roles you’ll play. It can happen suddenly, with an accident or illness, or it may start with driving your loved one to get groceries or going to the doctor. Later, you may find yourself taking more time off from work, preparing meals or handling their finances.

Whether you’re just beginning to anticipate a need or currently taking care of a family member, this seminar will provide resources and practical tools for you and your loved one. Topics will include financial resources, where to find support and services, overview of types of care, how to access help and how to manage stress.

Presented by the Farmington Community and Recreational Services Department.

Honor Veterans Day with a film and discussion about how we as a community can help veterans in need.

Almost Sunrise tells the inspiring story of two young men, Tom Voss and Anthony Anderson, who, in an attempt to put their haunting Iraq combat experiences behind them, embark on an extraordinary journey - a 2,700 mile trek on foot across America. While the film exposes some of the brutality of war, it doesn't dwell there. It's ultimately a story of hope and potential solutions. Most importantly, the film reveals they promise of holistic practices for healing.

The film also acts as an urgent call for communities to better understand these deep-seated psychic wounds, and for the government to acknowledge and finally treat moral pain by using other methods than pills. Please join us for this 98 minute documentary and gain a better understanding of the veterans in our lives and how we can work together to serve and honor them when they come home. A brief discussion will follow.

NOVEMBER'S BOOK: Scythe by Neal Shusterman

A world with no hunger, no disease, no war, no misery: humanity has conquered all those things, and has even conquered death. Now Scythes are the only ones who can end life—and they are commanded to do so, in order to keep the size of the population under control. Citra and Rowan are chosen to apprentice to a scythe—a role that neither wants. These teens must master the “art” of taking life, knowing that the consequence of failure could mean losing their own.
