Based on his own experience as a gerontologist and someone who has been meditating for many years, Dr. Matthew Raider will talk about what keeps you young even as your body ages. He will also explore the eternal nature of consciousness and explain how you can experience it for yourself

Dr. Raider is a national speaker and a contributing author to the book "Meditation as Medication for the Soul" by Rajinder Singh. His chapter "Meditation: 25 Years Experience in Primary Care Medicine" chronicles meditation as it has moved from "being considered a fringe practice to now being called the secret to optimum health."

A clinical physician and former faculty member at the University of Connecticut Medical School, he is currently coordinating director of the Geriatric Teaching Program in Family Medicine at Middlesex Hospital in Connecticut.

Justin Brooks, Doctoral Candidate in History, Yale University, will speak on the the Lewis Walpole Library’s exhibition “Global Encounters in the Archives: Britain’s Empire in the Age of Horace Walpole.” The exhibition, which looks at aspects of the global British Empire in the long eighteenth century, takes full advantage of the diverse range of archival resources held by the Library and which Mr. Brooks co-curated, including manuscripts, printed texts, graphic images, and objects. Interrelated themes include political economy, diplomacy, indigeneity, and slavery. The talk, exhibition, and other related programs celebrate the broad pre-disciplinary collecting activities of Horace Walpole (1717-1797) and W.S. Lewis (1895-1979) and will explore how current multi-disciplinary methodologies invite creative research in the Library’s archival collections. Mr. Brooks’s talk is offered as part of a year’s worth of events celebrating the 300th anniversary of Horace Walpole’s birth.

This Lewis Walpole Library lecture is held in partnership with the Farmington Libraries.

Space is limited. Registration required.

    Contact: Leah Farrell   860-673-6791   lfarrell@farmingtonlibraries.org

Endre (Andy) Sarkany was born in Budapest, Hungary on October 31, 1936.  The building he lived in was located inside the Budapest ghetto which is where he remained during the Holocaust.  The building housed a nursery/kindergarten on the ground floor.  The school was affiliated with the Jewish Agency of Hungary and was led by Mr. Eugene Polnay.  The building also housed on the top floor a dance, acrobat and ballet studio.  These facts were significant in Endre’s survival and that of at least 150 orphaned children.   Endre’s father was taken to Mauthausen concentration camp in the spring of 1944, fortunately he did survive.

After WWII, Hungary became a communist nation.  Although Endre graduated high school in 1955, he was not accepted to university because he was deemed an undesirable element of society.  This label was given to anyone who owned a business before the communists took over the country. Endre was fortunate to escape Hungary after the October 1956 uprising and was able to immigrate to the United States.  He received his bachelor’s degree from Tusculum College in Tennessee and his Master of Science degree in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.  Endre worked for both the McDonald Douglas Corporation and the IBM Corporation.

Over the past 10 years, Endre has been speaking to students about his personal experiences during the Holocaust, living under the brutality of the Soviet regime in Hungary, and finding a home in the United States. Mr. Sarkany is married, has a daughter and son, and five grandchildren.

Kristallnacht, also referred to as the Night of Broken Glass, was a series of coordinated attacks against Jews throughout Nazi Germany and parts of Austria on November 9-10, 1938. German authorities looked on as SA paramilitary and civilians carried out these attacks and covered the streets with broken glass from the windows of Jewish-owned stores, buildings, and synagogues. This annual event at the Farmington Libraries commemorates the human spirit’s ability to overcome such persecution.

Witchcraft trials, a serial murderer who inspired a popular movie, and a bizarre vagabond who has fascinated people for 150 years are three amazing yet true stories from the state’s past that independent historian Diana Ross McCain will recount in her talk. McCain draws the tales from her books It Happened in Connecticut: Twenty-five Events that Shaped the Nutmeg State and Mysteries and Legends of New England: True Stories of the Unsolved and Unexplained. Following the presentation, McCain will sell and autograph copies of her books.

Diana Ross McCain is a partner in Come Home to Connecticut, an enterprise that offers historical and genealogical research services and programming. She has been researching, writing, and speaking about history for more than thirty years. McCain holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history, and was on the staff of the Connecticut Historical Society for more than twenty-five years. She is the author of many magazine and newspaper articles and several non-fiction books of history, including, in addition to the two about which she will speak, Connecticut Coast: A Town-by-Town Illustrated History, and To All on Equal Terms: The Life and Legacy of Prudence Crandall, a biography of Connecticut’s official state heroine. Her first work of fiction, the historical novel Thy Children’s Children, based on the true story of the first five generations of the Lyman family of Lyman Orchards, was published in 2016. She lives in Durham, Connecticut.
