Jodie will perform several of her mother-in-law Nancy's favorite pieces to honor her life of 90 years on the anniversary of her passing.

A gifted storyteller, Nancy was an innovator in the field of preschool programming and promoted the importance of books, toys, music and puppets in early childhood development. Highlights of her distinguished career include the Faith Hektoen Librarian of the Year Award from the Connecticut Library Association, serving on both the American Library Association Caldecott and Newbery committees and the “TV Turnoff Campaign” which became a sensation and which garnered attention from talk show host David Letterman. Nancy also wrote a book, Beginning with Books Library Programming for Infants, Toddlers and Preschoolers. With her contagious laugh and smile Nancy made the library a welcoming place for children and their caregivers. She was a true gem.

All ages welcome.

Jodie DeSalvo has captured national and international attention with her classical and jazz interpretations of the masters of keyboard literature. She has been a top prize winner in the Young Keyboard Artists Competition, the American Music Scholarship Competition and the National Federation of Music Clubs Competition. A graduate of the Hartt and Manhattan Schools of Music, and a former student of John Browning and Gary Graffman, she is also a past recipient of the Artist Fellowship Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

OCTOBER'S BOOK: Brick Lane by Monica Ali

After an arranged marriage to Chanu, a man twenty years older, Nazneen is taken to London, leaving her home and heart in the Bangladeshi village where she was born. Her new world is full of mysteries. How can she cross the road without being hit by a car (an operation akin to dodging raindrops in the monsoon)? What is the secret of her bullying neighbor Mrs. Islam? What is a Hell's Angel? And how must she comfort the naïve and disillusioned Chanu?

As a good Muslim girl, Nazneen struggles to not question why things happen. She submits, as she must, to Fate and devotes herself to her husband and daughters. Yet to her amazement, she begins an affair with a handsome young radical, and her erotic awakening throws her old certainties into chaos.

The museum’s nearly 50,000 works of art span 5,000 years, from Greek and Roman antiquities to the first museum collection of American contemporary art. Presented by the Wadsworth Docent Council. Docents are volunteer educators who guide visitors of all ages through the museum, giving tours and engaging guests in conversation about art. In celebration of the Docent Council’s 50th anniversary, Wadsworth Atheneum docents will visit 50 community sites across the state in 2018, including the Farmington Libraries!

Find out what how the Town of Farmington can help you care for your loved ones!

Caring for an elderly and disabled family member or close friend is one of the most important—and complicated—roles you’ll play. It can happen suddenly, with an accident or illness, or it may start with driving your loved one to get groceries or going to the doctor. Later, you may find yourself taking more time off from work, preparing meals or handling their finances.

Whether you’re just beginning to anticipate a need or currently taking care of a family member, this seminar will provide resources and practical tools for you and your loved one. Topics will include financial resources, where to find support and services, overview of types of care, how to access help and how to manage stress.

Presented by the Farmington Community and Recreational Services Department.

Honor Veterans Day with a film and discussion about how we as a community can help veterans in need.

Almost Sunrise tells the inspiring story of two young men, Tom Voss and Anthony Anderson, who, in an attempt to put their haunting Iraq combat experiences behind them, embark on an extraordinary journey - a 2,700 mile trek on foot across America. While the film exposes some of the brutality of war, it doesn't dwell there. It's ultimately a story of hope and potential solutions. Most importantly, the film reveals they promise of holistic practices for healing.

The film also acts as an urgent call for communities to better understand these deep-seated psychic wounds, and for the government to acknowledge and finally treat moral pain by using other methods than pills. Please join us for this 98 minute documentary and gain a better understanding of the veterans in our lives and how we can work together to serve and honor them when they come home. A brief discussion will follow.

Presented as part of the Resiliance Grows Here initiative of the Farmington Valley Health District.

NOVEMBER'S BOOK: Scythe by Neal Shusterman

A world with no hunger, no disease, no war, no misery: humanity has conquered all those things, and has even conquered death. Now Scythes are the only ones who can end life—and they are commanded to do so, in order to keep the size of the population under control. Citra and Rowan are chosen to apprentice to a scythe—a role that neither wants. These teens must master the “art” of taking life, knowing that the consequence of failure could mean losing their own.

Agnes Vertes was born Agnes Katz in Budapest, Hungary, in 1940. Germany occupied Hungary in March 1944; deportations of the nation's Jews began in May. Hungarian Jews represented about one half of all Jews murdered at the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp, according to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. First Agnes, her younger sister, and her mother lived with relatives in the countryside to escape the bombing. Then her father came for them. "Not one of those in the villages survived. If I stayed there I definitely would've been smoke," she says, referring to the crematoriums at Auschwitz. Soon after she and her sister returned to Budapest. A woman came and promised their parents she would keep the girls safe. Her presentation discusses how they were ultimately saved.

Kristallnacht, also referred to as the Night of Broken Glass, was a series of coordinated attacks against Jews throughout Nazi Germany and parts of Austria on November 9-10, 1938. German authorities looked on as SA paramilitary and civilians carried out these attacks and covered the streets with broken glass from the windows of Jewish-owned stores, buildings, and synagogues. This annual event at the Farmington Libraries commemorates the human spirit’s ability to overcome such persecution.
