JANUARY'S BOOK: Something Missing by Matthew Dicks

A career criminal with OCD tendencies and a savant-like genius for bringing order to his crime scenes, Martin considers himself one of the best in the biz. After all, he’s been able to steal from the same people for years on end—virtually undetected. Of course, this could also be attributed to his unique business model—he takes only items that will go unnoticed by the homeowner. After all, who in their right mind would miss a roll of toilet paper here, a half-used bottle of maple syrup there, or even a rarely used piece of china buried deep within a dusty cabinet?

    Contact: Leah Farrell   860-673-6791   lfarrell@farmingtonlibraries.org

The Alturas Duo has been recognized as one of the most engaging ensembles performing in the chamber music world today. The only group of its kind, the Duo was formed with the idea of playing South American and classical music by bringing together the unusual combination of the viola, charango and guitar, and in doing so, creating passionate music that moves at ease between the Baroque, South American folk rhythms and new pieces written especially for the Duo. The performances of Scott Hill (guitar) and Carlos Boltes (charango and viola) oscillate from the beautiful and serene to strong and pulsating, taking audiences on a journey to new musical heights.

Please register.

This event is made possible by Richard P. Garmany through a grant awarded by the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving. The Farmington Libraries will be hosting a variety of performances throughout the year as part of the Richard P. Garmany Music Series.

    Contact: Leah Farrell   860-673-6791   lfarrell@farmingtonlibraries.org

The Farmington Garden Club and the Farmington Libraries are pleased to host bestselling author, Kathryn Aalto! Ms. Aalto is a writer, landscape designer, garden historian and lecturer who for the past twenty five years has written about “places where nature and culture intersect.” The popular speaker and storyteller has a special interest in the geography of childhood and literary landscapes.

In her two books, The Natural World of Winnie-the-Pooh: A Walk through the Forest that Inspired the Hundred Acre Wood (2015) and Nature and Human Invention, Ms. Aalto has written about  places that inspired the stories along with the real forest’s rare flora and fauna. “In writing and design,” Ms. Aalto remarks, “both knit narratives — one with plants, the other with words.”

Kathryn Aalto lectures in England and the United States at arboretums, libraries, art and natural history museums, garden clubs and book festivals. She also teaches a range of literary and landscape courses. In her lively presentations she takes people on an illustrated journey to learn about one of the best known and loved natural settings, the Hundred Acre Wood of A.A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner. Ms. Aalto’s presentations are part travelogue, biography and natural history.
