    Contact: Leah Farrell   860-673-6791   lfarrell@farmingtonlibraries.org

2019 would have been Fred Astaire’s 120th birthday!

Vocalist Julian Wild with pianist John Brighenti and bassist Mike Asetta pay tribute to the great Fred Astaire. While his reputation as the legendary Hollywood hoofer cannot be denied, no one introduced more famous songs than Fred Astaire. Consider that the greatest writers wrote their best songs for Astaire's films (and specifically for Astaire): George and Ira Gershwin ("Nice Work If You Can Get It," "They Can't Take That Away from Me,"), Irving Berlin ("Cheek to Cheek," "Puttin' on the Ritz"), Cole Porter ("Night and Day"), Jerome Kern ("The Way You Look Tonight") and Harold Arlen ("One for My Baby"). Fred Astaire had more songs written expressly for him than any other singer.  He was, in fact, Irving Berlin's favorite singer!

PLEASE REGISTER

John Brighenti is a native of Connecticut born in New Britain. He is a 1967 graduate of the Hartt College of Music of the University of Hartford. After graduating, he enrolled at the Hartford Conservatory of Music to further pursue his musical studies. John next traveled to New York to study jazz improvisation with the world-renowned jazz pianist and composer, Lennie Tristano for a year in 1975. From 1982-1984 he went on to study jazz piano with the great jazz saxophonist/pianist Jerry Bergonzi. 1977 found John touring the U.S. playing piano for the Glenn Miller Orchestra under the direction of Jimmy Henderson. Since then he has played with the Eddie Howard, Al Gentile and Chic Chicetti Orchestras well as Paul Landerman’s Group. In addition to performing, John teaches piano and music theory.

Michael Asetta is a masterful improviser and an expressionist bassist, and has worked with some of the greatest jazz performers early in their careers.  This included pianist Brad Mehldau and pianist Christian Sands (along with saxaphonist Bill Evans). Asetta had extended tours with the Unites States Air Force Jazz Ambassadors and the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, later performing nightly as the house bassist at the world’s largest casino for over five years. He has performed with rock/pop artists: Josh Groban, Earth Wind & and Fire, Peter Frampton, Yes, Electric Light Orchestra, Dinah Shore, Kansas, Lou Rawls, Peter Cetera, Zack Starkey and show bands/orchestras: Irish Tenors, Martin Short, Regis Philbin, Ben E. King, the late Don Rickles, Marilyn King. Now residing in Connecticut he leads jazz groups at concerts, private events, and clubs throughout Southern New England and the New York area, showcasing the Great American Songbook along with the best of today’s popular songs interpreted in jazz.

Julian Wild is a British/American jazz vocalist. Julian worked with the Glyndebourne Opera, London Festival Ballet, has been an Assistant Choreographer for 2 London West End musicals, and performed in the original London productions of “42nd St”, Sondheim’s “Follies”, and “ Me and My Girl”.  He performed at the London Palladium and the Theater Royal Drury Lane, appeared in multiple TV shows for BBC, ITV as well as music videos and drama - and even co-hosted a game show for LWT TV in the UK. He performed engagements at the Ritz, and Waldorf Hotels in London, and the Cotton Club in Knightsbridge in London as a jazz singer and compare and as lead singer of the Brian Williams Big Band.  Included among his performances are three “Royal Variety Performances” for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth and Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. His career has also included various teaching positions at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts (LAMDA), Corona Arts Academy, and London Weekend Theatre Arts College.

This event is made possible by Richard P. Garmany through a grant awarded by the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving. The Farmington Libraries host a variety of performances throughout the year as part of the Richard P. Garmany Music Series.

Author Dan Milner will join us on the release date of his new book, The Unstoppable Irish, which follows the changing fortunes of New York's Irish Catholics, commencing with the evacuation of British military forces in late 1783 and concluding one hundred years later with the completion of the initial term of the city's first Catholic mayor. During that century, Hibernians first coalesced and then rose in uneven progression from being a variously dismissed, despised, and feared foreign group to ultimately receiving de facto acceptance as constituent members of the city's population. Dan Milner presents evidence that the Catholic Irish of New York gradually integrated (came into common and equal membership) into the city populace rather than assimilated (adopted the culture of a larger host group). Assimilation had always been an option for Catholics, even in Ireland. In order to fit in, they needed only to adopt mainstream Anglo-Protestant identity. But the same virile strain within the Hibernian psyche that had overwhelmingly rejected the abandonment of Gaelic Catholic being in Ireland continued to hold forth in Manhattan and the community remained largely intact. A novel aspect of Milner's treatment is his use of song texts in combination with period news reports and existing scholarship to develop a fuller picture of the Catholic Irish struggle. Products of a highly verbal and passionately musical people, Irish folk and popular songs provide special insight into the popularly held attitudes and beliefs of the integration epoch.

Dan Milner is an adjunct assistant professor of geography and history at St. John's University. He is the author of The Bonnie Bunch of Roses: Songs of England, Ireland and Scotland and has compiled a number of CDs, including Irish Ballads and Songs of the Sea, Irish in America, and Irish Pirate Ballads.

Join us for a special after-hours lecture on rock group Led Zeppelin!

When Led Zeppelin II replaced Abbey Road as the #1 album in December of 1969, it symbolized a "passing of the torch" into a new era in popular music. This multimedia presentation observes how 1960s rock bands The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and The Yardbirds paved the way for Led Zeppelin in the 1970s.

Presenter Aaron Krerowicz first spoke at the Farmington library on February 21, 2013, when he presented "The Beatles: Band of the Sixties". In the six-and-a-half years since, he has spoken 588 more times in 32 states, Canada, and England. He is currently a doctoral student at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, where he is pursuing a terminal degree in music theory.

His career encompasses jazz standards, blues, bebop, exploratory jazz, free improvisation, and chamber music from the Renaissance to the 21st century. The Boston Globe called his playing "a revelation for unforced sweetness and strength," while ArtsFuse wrote, "Bloom's solos on flute and amplified flute are always highlights of a performance." Bloom is a 40-year veteran with the legendary Aardvark Jazz Orchestra ("lush sonorities worthy of Ellington's finest reed sections" - JazzTimes), and has appeared with jazz luminaries Charles Neville, Jaki Byard, Sheila Jordan, and Geri Allen. He is a faculty member of the Snow Pond Composers Workshop; serves as contributing editor for Noteworthy Sheet Music; and is a winner of the American Musicological Society's Noah Greenberg Award.

John Funkhouser, piano, has shared the stage with Grammy nominees Luciana Souza and Tierney Sutton, and appeared with notables like Ran Blake, Herb Pomeroy, Laszlo Gardony, Stan Strickland, piano savant Matt Savage, and Mark Harvey's Aardvark Jazz Orchestra. As the leader of his own band Funkhouse and as a sideman (piano and string bass), he has performed at Birdland, Blue Note, and Dizzy's in New York; New Orleans Jazz Festival; the Kennedy Center in Washington DC; Pittsburgh's Mellon Jazz Festival, and others. He has played Chicago, Los Angeles, Kansas City, and other U.S. cities, and has toured in Paris, Toulon, Zurich, Beijing, Shanghai, Singapore, Hong Kong, Toronto, and Montreal. Among others, Funkhouser has recorded with James Merenda's Masked Marvels, Pierre Hurel, Laura Allen, Willie Myette, Thomas Luescher, the Aardvark Jazz Orchestra, Matt Savage, John Lockwood, and FunkHouse. He teaches Bass, Ear Training, and Ensembles at Berklee College of Music.

Funny, heart-wrenching, time-traveling, world-bending, stereotype shattering YA books have been making a mark on society for decades and it’s time for us adults who love them to stop hiding in the shadows. Led by Laura Horn, Assistant Library Director.

    Contact: Leah Farrell   860-673-6791   lfarrell@farmingtonlibraries.org

Lightening darkness with humor, Velya Jancz-Urban and her 25-year-old daughter, Ehris, introduce readers to their offbeat Connecticut family. Motivated by an 11-year friendship with a charming Brazilian named Jose Geraldo, they spend four years preparing for their move to rural Brazil, where they will run a dairy farm and open an English school. When they follow their hearts to Ponte Nova, an explosion of betrayal leaves them dazed and grieving. Broke and broken, they are forced to return to the United States, and navigate their rebirth in a foreclosed 1770 New England farmhouse. An already strong mother/daughter relationship becomes indestructible when no one else is emotionally available for them.

How to Survive a Brazilian Betrayal is written by a kooky, gregarious mother and perceptive, poised daughter. Blurbed by Christiane Northrup, M.D., author of Mother-Daughter Wisdom, this memoir takes readers along on an unconventional family’s hilariously honest, yet heart-wrenching, journey. Readers will fall in love with their spunk, feel the knockout punches of betrayal along with them, and be rooting for them to get back up off the mat.

Despite their setbacks, Velya (the “charismatic weirdo”) and Ehris (the “sarcastic sophisticated healer”) still firmly believe that there is no growth without change, and that picking up the pieces of a shattered dream is better than having no pieces to pick up at all.
