Art of the Yankee Whale Hunt by Michael P. Dyer

Buried deep within the logbooks, journals and manuscripts of America’s 19th century whaling heritage are watercolor paintings and other drawings and representations of the hunt rarely if ever seen by the public. This book will bring this art form to life in the context in which it was created; in a maritime culture, on shipboard, at sea, during the daily hunting of whales. It will highlight artworks that capture the essence of whaling, its culture, the vessels used in it, the geographical locales of where it took place and the animals commonly pursued.

Michael P. Dyer is the Senior Maritime Historian at the New Bedford Whaling Museum where he has been on staff since 2001. He holds a bachelor's degree in American History, a master's in American Studies and a graduate certificate in American Maritime History. He was the inaugural U.S.A. Gallery Fellow at the Australia National Maritime Museum in 2008 and a 38th Voyager onboard the Charles W. Morgan in 2014. He has published numerous articles and is currently finishing up his book, Art of the Yankee Whale Hunt.

Our Craft Circle is back, just in time for the holiday gift-making season! 12 Saturdays until Christmas -- we can get a lot done in that time!  If you're looking for a group of crafters to encourage and coach you along, bring a portable project and join us!  All are welcome, regardless of skill level.  We have knitters, crocheters and others.  Want to learn to crochet or knit?  Want to chat with others who craft? Or learn a new skill? We're willing to share our skills, or help find tutorials on the Internet.  Interested in coloring?  Bring that along as well!  We meet every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.
