The Friends of the Fall River Public Library welcome Jill Farinelli, author of The Palatine Wreck: The Legend of the New England Ghost Ship (University Press of New England). It is the true story of the voyage of the Princess Augusta, which ended in shipwreck on Block Island (RI) two days after Christmas in 1738. From this wreck grew one of New England's most enduring maritime mysteries: the appearance of a fiery ghost ship called the Palatine Light. Through years of painstaking research, Jill Farinelli reconstructs the origins of one of New England’s most chilling maritime mysteries. Enjoy a fascinating presentation that uses marine paintings, maps, photographs, and vintage engravings to tell the story of the voyage, the wreck, and the legend that arose from it. Copies of The Palatine Wreck will be available at the program.

Thomas C. Brandy, a native of Fall River and former resident of Tiverton and Barrington, RI, has announced the publishing of his first historical fiction novel, Robert's Wing. The story takes place in Fall River/Tiverton/Dartmouth/Sakonnet and surrounding waters during the start of America's involvement in World War II. It blends some of the history of the beginnings of the Civil Air Patrol with a fictional aero club that assists the U.S. Coast Guard and Navy in providing sea rescues, submarine location and other early war, unmet military needs. In so doing, Robert's Wing also informs readers of how civilians coped with life at home by highlighting our Yankee grit that was so essential in the victorious outcome of the Battle for the Atlantic and foiling the sinister invasion plans of the Axis powers.  Robert's Wing

A product of Rhode Island public schooling, Mr Brandy is a graduate of Heidelberg University in Ohio and holds a Master's Degree from the University of Wisconsin (Madison) with additional studies at the University of Oslo (Norway) and Minnesota State (St. Cloud). Now retired after forty years as a special educator, he has resumed his interest in writing historical fiction. As a licensed pilot he is also an active senior member of the Civil Air Patrol. He and his family now reside in the Rochester, Minnesota area. Mr. Brandy is currently communicating with area libraries and hopes to provide presentations and signings this coming spring and summer.
