Welcome to Grafton Ukulele Musicians (GUM), a partnership between Apple Tree Arts and Grafton Public Library.  We meet the second Thursday of every month. All levels are welcome and there is no fee. GUM meets on the third floor of Apple Tree Arts, One Grafton Common.

Bring your ukulele and your singing voice to participate in this jam session lead by Miss Jan Barlow from Apple Tree Arts. Participants suggest the music and come together to play once a month. The Library provides copies of The Daily Ukulele on loan for use in the session.

Don't have a ukulele? You can borrow a ukulele, as well!

Brush up on your strumming skills or learn new chords with the Ukulele Course online at ArtistWorks, for free! A library card is required to access.

Here are some of the songs GUM worked on last month and will do again this month:

7:00 PM  -  8:30 PM Seven Times Salt Concert: Easy As Lying: The Music of Shakespeare's Globe
    Contact: Beth Gallaway   508-839-4649 x1105   info@graftonlibrary.org

Early music band Seven Times Salt kicks off the 2018 Summer Reading Program "Reading Rocks" with a performance of songs the Bard mentions by name, as well as works by his musical contemporaries. Includes choice excerpts from his plays read aloud by STS's finest thespians. Dances from the Elizabethan and Jacobean courts and a saucy ballad or two round out the evening’s festivities! Free admission, teen/adult.

The program takes place at Apple Tree Arts, One Grafton Common in the Great Hall.

Seven Times Salt is a Boston-based early music ensemble specializing in repertoire of the 16th and 17th centuries. Praised for creative programming and an “impeccably balanced sound,” STS has performed since 2003 at venues throughout New England including Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Plimoth Plantation, the New England Folk Festival, WGBH radio, and many others. We have also researched and presented original programs for the Amherst, Bloomington, and Boston Early Music Festivals (Fringe), the Society For Historically Informed Performance, and our own self-produced concert series. We delight in blurring the lines between “art music” and folk tunes, and feel at ease performing in the concert hall, the dance hall, or the beer hall!

Seven Times Salt is:

Karen Burciaga – violin & treble viol
Daniel Meyers – recorders, flute & percussion
Josh Schreiber Shalem – bass viol
Matthew Wright – lute
with special guests
Michael Barrett – tenor & recorder
Barbara Hill – mezzosoprano

This program is supported in part by a grant from the Grafton Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency, and Apple Tree Arts.

Space is limited and FREE tickets will be made available May 22.

To donate you must be in good health and weigh at least 110 lbs. In MA, 16 year olds may donate blood but are required to have a consent form signed by a parent or legal guardian prior to donating. Print a copy of this form if you need it. If you are 17 and older, you just need to bring a form of photo ID with you.

How to Prepare to Donate Blood:

  • Make sure you are well hydrated at the time of your donation. Try and limit the amount of caffeinated beverages you consume prior to giving blood.
  • Do not donate on an empty stomach. Eat a good meal at least three hours prior to giving blood.
  • Get a good nights rest prior to coming in to donate.
  • If in the past your hemoglobin has been low, you can raise it by eating iron rich food. For a list of food rich in iron click here.

Getting little ones to wash their hands isn't always an easy task. That's sure to change after they create their own rubber duckie soap. This workshop is designed for grades K-5. Each participant will make their own soapy creation using glycerin based soap and adding colors, glitter and scents. The process does not involve traditional soap making techniques, so there is no lye exposure. Once the cocoction has cooled slightly, we will add cosmetic grade glitter, colors, essential oil (optional), choose from a variety of rubber duckies to embed and decorate the tops with white soap curls, creating waves. At the end of the workshop each participant will take their handmade soap home, it can be unmolded the following day and used right away.

Since the soap can get hot, a parent or guardian must be present for children under the age of 10 to lend a helping hand.

Don't have a ukulele? You can borrow a ukulele, as well!
