Fulton County was once known as the “Glove Capital of the World.” Thousands flocked to Upstate New York to work in the industry, bringing in a diverse mix of cultures, religions, traditions, and heritage to the once-sleepy towns nestled in the foothills of the Adirondacks. Every corner of the county had some connection to glove-making, whether it was the forests around Caroga rich in the hemlock bark used for tanning or the sewing machine in the private homes of city residents – there’s no denying that leather goods and gloves were the life blood of the county’s economy. How did the industry begin, and what happened to it?

Join Fulton County Historian Samantha Hall-Saladino on an exploration of the history of glove-making in Fulton County, from the early 18th century through 2018.
