Every month the paintings, photography, sculpture and other creative crafts are displayed in the Helen Gould Room located directly off the main foyer, and in the Lower Lobby display cases. We are pleased to present the following exhibitions:

May: The West of the Canal Group (aka WOC) is a collective of East End artists formed to pursue a passion for interpreting faces and clothed figures. The group works in various media and styles, from gesture drawings to more developed pieces from longer poses. Their goal is to share their fascination with drawing and painting from life, and to seek visibility for their art. Participating artists are: Kitty Blumberg, Carol Carlsen, Keith Mantell, Hannah Ritter, Saul Rosenstreich, Frances Sherman and Edythe Thomkinson. An Artist Reception will be held on May 20 from 3:00-5:00 pm in the Helen Gould Room.

June:  Displaying this month is artist Christine Dupuis. Ms. Dupuis organizes a group called Island East Plein Air Painters that goes out weekly to various locations. Her goal is to see the Plein Air painting movement grow on the North Fork of Long Island where the land is plentiful. Her choice of medium is oil paint because of the buttery texture and rich depth of color it provides. Christine is trained in the classical method of the Old Masters and is compelled to find a way to make “Old Meet New” in a contemporary fashion, and she is attracted to the way the light truly illuminates the subject. There will be an Artist Reception on Sunday, June 3 from 1:00-2:30 pm in the Helen Gould Room.

Emphasis is on alignment and breathing, and improved coordination and balance. The key to mat Pilates is to focus on breathing. The exercises in mat Pilates focus on strengthening the muscles of the hips, back, abdominals, and glutes.

July: Sean Farkas is an East End native and lover of its landscape, finding visual inspiration and intrigue in its natural beauty. Graduating from Adelphi University with a Major in Graphic Design, Sean is constantly finding the unexpected in the everyday. Whether he is actively photographing the East End or avidly photo-journaling trips far from home, Sean challenges himself to help us see our surroundings a little differently.

August: Andy Morris was born in New York City and is a graduate of Southampton College with a major in printmaking. His colorful paintings, illustrations and lithographs have been featured in many oneman and group shows here on Long Island, including Guild Hall, East End Arts Council, Time-Life Inc., and at the Hampton Bays and Quogue Public Libraries. Andy now lives and owns a studio in Hampton Bays. This exhibit will be a thirty-five year retrospective of mixed-media.

Gallbladder surgery has become one of the more commonly performed surgical procedures. Peconic Bay Medical Center's Chief of Surgery, Dr. Steven Ouzounian, will discuss gallbladder disease and treatment options and will review technology and advances related to minimally invasive surgery. Minimally invasive surgery is accomplished through a small incision and can lead to a quick recovery.

Learning how the brain responds to pleasure has blasted the doors of addiction research wide open.  Join psychiatrist Dr. Paul Garson, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital’s Director of the Division of Mental Health Services, for a talk and discussion about how the brain’s reward and pleasure centers may be commandeered by drugs and alcohol, so much so that addiction is now recognized as a chronic disease that changes both the function and the structure of the brain.

Meet Dr. Stanley Katz, Peconic Bay Medical Center's Chair of Cardiology and Chief of Interventional Cardiology.  Dr. Katz is nationally known for his cardiology expertise and has been instrumental in planning Peconic Bay Medical Center's new Cardiac Care Center, named the Kanas Regional Heart Center. The Heart Center will feature “cath labs,” the first facilities of their kind on the East End, which have the potential to save hundreds of lives each year.

Emphasis is on alignment and breathing, and improved coordination and balance. The key to mat Pilates is to focus on breathing. The exercises in mat Pilates focus on strengthening the muscles of the hips, back, abdominals, and glutes.

This yoga class will help you build strength and increase flexibility; meditation and breath will also be explored. Core Yoga is a dynamic series of poses where breath is linked to movement. The class is moderately paced and set to music, and will invigorate your whole body!

Join Susan Semerade for guided stretches, exercises and simple yoga poses, primarily seated in a chair. This fun-filled hour includes breathing exercises, relaxation techniques and meditation. 20 years of teaching yoga has led her to focus on those individuals who are not able to get down onto the floor; she encourages seniors and the disabled to come to her classes.
