6:00 PM  -  7:00 PM Vellamo Folk Duo Concert at Adams Center

The Kingston Public Library is happy to welcome back Finnish Folk Duo, Vellamo!

Northern Beat- 2017 Tour

Vellamo is led by the performing and songwriting team of Pia Leinonen and Joni Tiala. Their music is
characterized by haunting melodies, Pia's ethereal lead vocals and Joni's virtuosic guitar stylings. In Finnish
mythology, Vellamo is the goddess of the sea. Based in Kokkola, on the western coast of Finland, Vellamo
combines the rich tradition of Finnish folksong with an appealing “retro” sensibility, creating a modern folk
music experience.  This will be their 8th tour in the United States.

This concert is a free, family event.  It is sponsored by the Friends of the Kingston Library and the Kingston Public Library Foundation.

It will be held at the Adams Center, 33 Summer Street in Kingston.

The Girl at the Baggage Claim is a provocative study of the different ideas Easterners and Westerners have about the self and society and what this means for current debates in art, education, geopolitics, and business.  Is our mantra “To thine own self be true” or do we belong to something larger than ourselves?

Jen’s work has appeared in The New Yorker, The Atlantic Monthly, and dozens of other periodicals as well as in The Best American Short Stories.  Nominated for a National Book Critics’ Circle Award, her work was featured in a PBS American Masters’ special on the American novel.  She has been awarded a Lannan Literary Award for Fiction, a Guggenheim fellowship, a Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study fellowship, and numerous other awards.

Boston's Big Dig has contributed more to our understanding and appreciation of the city's archaeological history than any other recent event.   In A History of Boston in 50 Artifacts, Joe Bagley, city archaeologist of Boston, uncovers a fascinating hodgepodge of history--from ancient fishing grounds to Jazz Age red-light districts--that will surprise and delight even longtime residents.

Joe Bagley received his Bachelor’s Degree in Archaeology from Boston University and a Master’s Degree in Historical Archaeology from UMass Boston.  He joined the City Archaeology Program in 2011 and curates a growing repository of archaeological collections.  In 2016 he was awarded the John L. Cotter Award from the Society for Historical Archaeology for early career achievements.

Awakened to the death of his son in a car crash, reeling in the desolate place that no parent ever expects to be, Ken Brack sets out to find how people rebuild their lives after catastrophic loss.  Especially For You casts fresh light on our responses to horrific ordeals, including healing oneself by lifting others up.  Driven by an arresting emotional intimacy in the author’s narrative voice, the book speaks passionately to readers trying to make sense of calamity and to our shared capacity to transform pain into something good.

Ken Brack is a narrative nonfiction author and a longtime journalist in New England.  He is the author of Closer By the Mile and blogs for Psychology Today’s website.  In 2008 he co-founded a nonprofit bereavement center, Hope Floats Healing and Wellness Center, in Kingston.

The American Spirit is a timely collection of speeches by David McCullough that reminds us of fundamental American principles.  He has spoken before Congress, the White House, colleges and universities, historical societies, and other esteemed institutions over the course of his career.  Now, at a time of self-reflection in America following a bitter election campaign that has divided the country, McCullough reminds us of core American values to which we all subscribe.

David McCullough has twice received the Pulitzer Prize, for Truman and John Adams, and twice received the National Book Award, for The Path Between the Seas and Mornings on Horseback.  He is the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nations highest civilian award.
