Each month we'll meet at the Ledyard Senior Center for a lively book discussion. Join us!

This month we're reading "The

Vanishing Half" by Brit Bennet.

'"The Vignes twin sisters will always b

e

identical. But after growing up together in a small, southern black community and running away at age sixteen, it's not just the shape of their daily lives that is different as adults, it's everything: their families, their communities, their racial identities. Ten years later, one sister lives with her black daughter in the same southern town she once tried to escape. The other secretly passes for white, and her white husband knows nothing of her past. Still, even separated by so many miles and just as many lies, the fates of the twins remain intertwined. What will happen to the next generation, when their own daughters' storylines intersect? Weaving together multiple strands and generations of this family, from the Deep South to California, from the 1950s to the 1990s, Brit Bennett produces a story that is at once a riveting, emotional family story and a brilliant exploration of the American history of passing. Looking well beyond issues of race, The Vanishing Half considers the lasting influence of the past as it shapes a person's dec

isions, desires, and expectations, and explores some of the multiple reasons and realms in which people sometimes feel pulled to live as something other than their origins. As with her New York Times-bestselling debut The Mothers, Brit Bennett offers an engrossing page-turner about family and relationships that is immersive and provocative, compassionate and wise"--"

In this workshop, we'll create a relaxing atmosphere as we decorate postcards with animals inspired by Automatic Drawing.

Automatic Drawing is a creative method that celebrates the joy of mark making and letting go of perfectionism. You allow your hand to move across the page without intention other than to make a mark. Then you turn that mark into a unique composition. Think “scribble drawing” or “blob animals”.

This program is best suited for Adults.

Registration is not required but be aware that supplies are limited. It will be first come, first served.

This program is brought to us by the Friends of the Ledyard Public Library and the generous craft supply donations of community members. THANK YOU!

    Contact: Matt Novosad   860-464-9912   mnovosad@ledyardlibrary.org

Join the Ledyard Public Library in welcoming Matthew Reardon to talk about his new book The Traitor's Homecoming: Benedict Arnold's Raid on New London, Connecticut, September 4-13, 1781 as a part of the 2024 Connecticut Author's Trail.

By 1781, the war in North America had reached a stalemate. Throughout the summer the combined Franco-American armies of Generals George Washington and Jean-Baptiste comte de Rochambeau deceived British General Sir Henry Clinton into believing they were about to lay siege to New York City. When in fact, they were moving south toward Yorktown, Virginia, in a bid to trap Lord Cornwallis’ army against the sea. Clinton, falling for the deception, dispatched former American General Benedict Arnold to attack New London, hoping the move would derail militia reinforcements and supplies headed from Connecticut to the allied armies outside New York City, as well as destroy the privateers which operated out of its harbor.

Mr. Reardon's new book offers up a fresh interpretation utilizing dozens of newly discovered British and American sources on the battle in which Colonel William Ledyard, namesake of the town, was killed. Indeed, Reardon achieves a major reinterpretation of the battle while dismantling its myths.

Matthew Reardon is a native of northeastern Connecticut. He earned his BA in history and an MA in education from Sacred Heart University. His research interests mainly focus on Connecticut during the American Revolution and Civil War. He served as executive director of the New England Civil War Museum & Research Center for more than 15 years. He currently works as a middle school teacher in Vernon, Connecticut, and serves as a command historian for the Connecticut Military Department. Matthew, his wife Melisa, and son Michael live in Enfield, Connecticut.
