2017-2018 Sibling Rivalries

Homer and Langley / E.L Doctorow

In Homer and Langley, novelist E.L. Doctorow examines the lives of two reclusive brothers whose cloistered life is affected by some of the most profound events of the 20th century. When Langley returns home from World War I, he is forever scarred by his experiences, and he is nearly tipping over into the abyss of madness. His brother Homer, who is blind and possesses uniquely prophetic abilities, welcomes Langley into the once-grand New York City mansion in which he lives. Together, the two brothers isolate themselves from the world, but all the while, history is playing out around them and shaping them in the most surprising ways. Books & Authors

2017-2018 Sibling Rivalries

Vanessa and her sister / Priya Parmar

In this novel author Priya Parmar creates a fictionalized account of the complicated relationship shared by Virginia Stephen Woolf and her sister, Vanessa Stephen Bell. Told through a series of diary entries and letters, the novel explores the admiration, jealousy, and devotion that defined Virginia and Vanessa's relationship. Virginia, a writer, and Vanessa, a painter, are founding members of the Bloomsbury group. Born in the early 20th century, the London-based group brings together men and women who share a passion for art, social experimentation, and a bohemian lifestyle. But even in this free-spirited atmosphere, Virginia struggles with the complex feelings she has for Vanessa. In addition to professional jealousies, Virginia also possesses a fierce love for Vanessa that is aggravated by mental health issues. Parmar follows the Stephen sisters as Vanessa marries and becomes a mother, and Virginia eventually finds a husband in Leonard Woolf. Books & Authors

2017-2018 Sibling Rivalries

The Wright Brothers / David McCullough

In mid-December 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright, brothers who ran a bicycle shop to fund their scientific pursuits, became the first people to launch a piloted aircraft and have it stay in the air for a significant period of time. That day forever changed air travel, and the Wright brothers became household names as the inventors of the first airplane and the fathers of aviation. In this book, Pulitzer Prize-winning author David McCullough describes the life and times of the Wright brothers, from their childhood in Dayton, Ohio, to their fascination with flight technology, and their determination to solve the issues that others had come up against when attempting to invent manned flight mechanisms. The author uses letters, journals, and family albums to piece together some of the most important parts of these brothers' lives
