2:00 PM A DAY AT THE OPERA with Dr. Kolb: LES CONTES d'HOFFMANN

Jacques Offenbach’s, Les Contes d’Hoffmann

During one night in a tavern in Nuremberg, the poet Hoffmann is induced into telling the stories of the three great loves of his life and we see his stories unfold. In each story an evil nemesis causes the destruction of his love. His first love turns out to be a puppet, or animated doll. Because he has been sold a pair of magic glasses the doll appears to be real and it is only when his glasses break and the doll is destroyed by his enemy, Coppelius, that he realize the trick that has been played on him. His second love is Antonia, a frail woman who wishes to sing and be an artist like her mother, but such a career is destined to destroy her. Despite Hoffmann’s attempts to discourage her from singing, Antonia, encouraged by the evil Dr. Miracle, pursues her love for song and dies. His final love is a courtesan, Giulietta, who secretly steals his shadow as she assists the evil Captain Dappertutto, but then she accidentally drinks poison intended for Hoffmann’s friend and muse, Nicklausse, and she too dies. Back in the tavern, Hoffmann concludes that these three women represent different aspects of the same woman and announces that he will love no more but dedicate himself to his art instead.  Since Offenbach died before completing it, there are many different versions of this work and no definitive right one. Since Offenbach composed roughly 100 operas, it is remarkable that this final, incomplete work is viewed by most as his masterpiece. It contains numerous musical arias of exquisite beauty.

7:00 PM North Shore Audubon presents: NATIVE PLANTS FOR A BIRD-FRIENDLY HABITAT
    Contact: Nancy Tognan     nancy.tognan@gmail.com

This program is open to all.  Refreshments will be served.                                                                                                             Speaker Vincent Simeone, author of Native Plants for a Bird-friendly Habitat, and Director of Planting Fields Arboretum NYS Historic Park. There has long been a debate between the virtues of native plants vs. exotic species. Many worthwhile native trees, shrubs, perennials, and groundcovers have gone ignored to put more emphasis on plants with Asian or European nativity.  Many native plants can provide ornamental benefits and function in the landscape. Because these plants are native, they will thrive in our climate where sited correctly and support native wildlife.  This presentation will dispel the notion that native plants are not as interesting in the landscape as exotics. www.northshoreaudubon.org

2:00 PM STEPHEN SONDHEIM with Dr. Kolb

A protégé of Oscar Hammerstein II, Stephen Sondheim got his musical theatre break when he was offered the chance to write lyrics to the music of Leonard Bernstein for West Side Story. Although he later wrote lyrics for Jule Styne’s Gypsy and for Richard Rodgers’ Do I Hear a Waltz?, it was clear that Sondheim was most interested in creating both music and lyrics, and in breaking new ground. And he has done just that with great artistic success, though not without some critical carping. In the early 1970s he won three consecutive Tony Awards for Company, Follies, and A Little Night Music. He has stretched the musical theatre form to accommodate a homicidal maniac in Sweeney Todd and presidential assassins in Assassins. He has told a story backwards in Merrily We Roll Along, musicalized an unlikely subject in Commodore Perry’s opening of Japan to Western trade in Pacific Overtures, tried a new wrinkle on fairy tales in Into the Woods, and treated the love of an unattractive woman for a handsome officer in Passion.

2:00 PM A DAY AT THE OPERA with Dr. Kolb: CARMEN

Music by Georges Bizet; libretto by Ludovic Halévy and Henri Meilhac

One of the ten most frequently produced operas over the past century, Carmen also pioneered a new approach to opera—one in which realism played a far greater role. Set in Seville in the early 19th Century, Carmen tells the story of an attractive Gypsy who works in a cigarette factory and is flirtatious with numerous men, including the young soldier, Don José and the toreador, Escamillo, among others. Tempers frequently flare, and a fickle love leads to a tragic ending when Don José loses Carmen to Escamillo.

On May 1, 1915, with WWI entering its tenth month, a luxury ocean liner as richly appointed as an English country house sailed out of New York, bound for Liverpool, carrying a record number of children and infants. The passengers were surprisingly at ease, even though Germany had declared the seas around Britain to be a war zone. For months, German U-boats had brought terror to the North Atlantic. But the Lusitaniawas one of the era’s great transatlantic “Greyhounds”—the fastest liner then in service—and her captain, William Thomas Turner, placed tremendous faith in the gentlemanly strictures of warfare that for a century had kept civilian ships safe from attack.

The winner of the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, as well as five other awards, The Sympathizer is the breakthrough novel of the year. With the pace and suspense of a thriller and prose that has been compared to Graham Greene and Saul Bellow, The Sympathizer is a sweeping epic of love and betrayal. The narrator, a communist double agent, is a “man of two minds,” a half-French, half-Vietnamese army captain who arranges to come to America after the Fall of Saigon, and while building a new life with other Vietnamese refugees in Los Angeles is secretly reporting back to his communist superiors in Vietnam.

Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) was an Austrian Symbolist Painter and the most prominent member of the Vienna Secession movement. His major works include paintings, murals, theatre design, drawings, and other art objects, many of which are on display in the Vienna Secession gallery today. Klimt's primary subject was the female body, and his works are marked by a frank eroticism. Nowhere is this
more apparent than in his prolific drawings in pencil. 2017 marks the 155th year since the birth of Klimt the Neue Galerie in NYC is featuring 'Klimt and the Women of Vienna’s Golden Age, 1900–1918' through January 16, 2017. Professor Thomas Germano will discuss the art of Klimt and the artist's lasting legacy and influence found in a generation of younger artists including Egon Schiele and contemporary design.

2:00 PM COLE PORTER with Dr. Kolb

There was a time when Broadway musicals were elegant, witty and sophisticated, qualities that reached their zenith in the works of Cole Porter. Here was a composer/lyricist who wrote infectious tunes and clever rhymes to jazz-age stories, infusing them all with a certain naughtiness that never disappointed. His work included Gay Divorce, Anything Goes, Jubilee, Red, Hot and Blue!, Leave It To Me, Dubarry Was a Lady, Kiss Me, Kate, and Can-Can. And to top it off, the list of performers who introduced such classic songs as Begin the Beguine, I Get a Kick Out Of You, My Heart Belongs to Daddy, and Night and Day reads like a Who’s Who of the Broadway Theatre—Mary Martin, Ethel Merman, Fred Astaire, Alfred Drake, and Bert Lahr.

Rembrandt’s "Divine Encounter: Abraham and the Angels, will be presented by the Frick Collection from May 30, 2017 - August 20, 2017.  Curated around one small Rembrandt painting of 1646, and lent from a private collection, Abraham and the Angels has been exhibited only a handful of times and the painting will appear alongside other depictions by Rembrandt of the Old Testament figure Abraham. A selection of prints and drawings will offer a rare opportunity to examine the artist’s  engagement with the Abraham narrative. Professor Thomas Germano will discuss the exhibition and related narrative themes in Rembrandt that deal with divine intervention, sacrifice, fatherhood, revelation and prophecy.

2:00 PM SHAKESPEARE'S THE TEMPEST AND THE LESSONS OF FORGIVENESS with Dr. Kolb

“Oh brave new world that has such people in’t”

Prospero, an exiled ruler and practitioner of magic, causes a tempest to shipwreck his enemies as he seeks revenge for wrongs committed against him twelve years before. But on his island, “full of noises, sounds and sweet airs,” Prospero’s better self finally emerges, allowing him to learn to forgive, achieve reconciliation, renounce his “rough magic,” and return from his deserted island to the rough and tumble of a Milan that he was forced to leave twelve years ago. The island setting of The Tempest has been likened to the “New World” of the Americas, paradise, utopia, and the imaginary world of the theatre itself. The Tempest is Shakespeare’s last complete play, followed only by plays written in collaboration with others. This presentation will include audio/video illustrations.

2:00 PM THE MANY LIVES OF ROMEO & JULIET with Marilyn Carminio

This lecture will present the famous lovers of Verona in their many incarnations in film, theater, opera, ballet, visual arts, and photography. Versions of the story have existed since antiquity, but is the celebrated story based in truth or merely legend? From what sources did Shakespeare derive his play? Filled with beautiful clips from many media sources, the story will come alive through the various art forms and interpreters who have given voice to the star crossed pair over the centuries: Bellini, Gounod, Berlioz, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Bernstein; Franco Zefferelli’s 1968 movie with Olivia Hussey & Leonard Warren; Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 version with Clare Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio; the dancing of Fonteyn and Nureyev; the singing of Alagna & Gheorghiu & more.

We will then examine love from the point of view of social psychologists to understand the significance of first love, broken heart syndrome and whether love at first sight really exists. Traveling on to the ancient city of Verona we will meet the dedicated secretaries of “Juliet’s Club” who answer letters from lovers around the world seeking advice from the the legendary heroine. Finally, we will hear the story of a 21st century Juliet.

He was the “wunderkind” of the concert stage, the ballet, and the musical theatre, and later a master of the opera, educational television, the conductor’s podium, and the lecture hall as well. In a little more than a year in the early 1940s he made his debut as conductor of the New York Philharmonic, conducted the premiere of his first symphony as well as his first ballet score for Fancy Free, and ended with the Broadway opening of his musical comedy, On The Town. He straddled the worlds of serious and popular music, and created several memorable musical theatre pieces including Wonderful Town, Candide, West Side Story, and Mass. Much of his work celebrated New York City from Upper Westside street gangs, to Greenwich Village arty types, to sailors on shore leave. His songs included New York, New York, Lonely Town, Ohio, Tonight, Maria, I Feel Pretty, and Glitter and Be Gay.

One of Shakespeare’s most often performed plays, Romeo and Juliet explores issues that remain present in the 21st Century—issues of families in conflict, scenes of public protests and violence between opposing families and political points of view, and the tragedy of two young members of those families who discover love, but are unable to overcome hate, leading to their untimely deaths! The play has inspired operas, ballets, and an extraordinary musical theatre piece.
