Paul Robeson was an earlier version of Manhasset’s greatest athlete, Jim Brown. Like Brown, Robeson excelled at 4 sports. Like Brown, Robeson was a football all-American.  Robeson played professional football while earning a law degree at Columbia, and, then, he expanded theatrical skills that he began in high school.  He performed professionally in Showboat and Othello.  He achieved international acclaim with a singing repertoire that included, spirituals, as well as folk, political and classical music.  His father had been a slave; his mother of multi-racial background. It is not surprising that Paul Robeson became a powerful civil rights advocate.

RESCHEDULED FOR JANUARY 30, CANCELLATION.

2:00 PM A DAY AT THE OPERA: GREAT MOMENTS IN NEGLECTED OPERAS with Dr. James Kolb

There are many fine 19th-Century operas that receive only a very few stagings today, but many contain at least one memorable musical moment, and that aria or duet is often heard in concert performed by many great singers. Operas such as Halevy’s La Juive, Cilea’s L’Arlesiana, Catalani’s La Wally, and gems from Meyerbeer, Massenet and others will be examined in both concert and rare, staged renditions.  Rescheduled from January 4, due to snow cancellation.

7:00 PM North Shore Audubon: BIRDS OF A RESTORED GRASSLAND PROJECT (former Whitney Estate, Manhasset)

Stephane Perreault will present bird data from a grassland restoration project that has been underway for nearly a decade at the Greentree Foundation, a private 400-acre estate in Northern Nassau County. The stunning results are encouraging for all those involved in grassland restoration projects on Long Island. Stephane will also discuss a collaboration between grassland managers and birders to establish a bird dataset for a conceptual "grassland corridor" on Long Island. Stephane Perreault is a graduate of McGill University, where he conducted research on the American Redstart. Since moving to Long Island in the mid-90s he has pursued a diversified career in laboratory biology and has remained an avid birder. He is currently a staff ornithologist at the Seatuck Environmental Association and leads the organization's bird surveys at Greentree and other locations.

An exhibition of drawings by Rubens, Van Dyck and Jordaens will appear at the Morgan Library January 19 through April 29, 2018. The visual lecture will also present related paintings by these three masters of the Flemish Baroque in addition to masterworks that show the distinctive styles of each artist and their influence on one another. A comic ballet dating from 1789 has been reconstructed and preserved in several versions. In 1960 Sir Frederick Ashton created a new production for the Royal Ballet of England which remains a delightful rendition of the traditional comic story of a young boy getting the girl he loves despite the opposition of her mother who wishes the daughter to marry a dimwitted, but very rich young man. The work includes a clog dance, a Maypole dance, a violent storm, and an extraordinarily beautiful pas de deux.

2:00 PM For Women's History Month: THE ROLE OF THE AMERICAN FIRST LADY...

FROM ELEANOR ROOSEVELT TO MELANIA TRUMP

To celebrate Women's History Month enjoy a series of three Visual History Lectures with Marilyn Carminio

Part I: Eleanor Roosevelt, Beth Truman, Mamie Eisenhower, Jaqueline Kennedy

Thirteen women have served as first lady of the United States since Eleanor Roosevelt. The Constitution does not outline any responsibilities for this challenging role, sometimes described as the most demanding volunteer job in America. These remarkable women are wives, mothers and confidants to the most powerful person in the world, in addition to occupying their own place on the international stage. Although not elected, they are often subject to intense public scrutiny. This multimedia lecture will be presented in three parts. Part I will profile first ladies from Eleanor Roosevelt to Jacqueline Kennedy. It will highlight the personal side of life in the White House and the unique contributions each of these women has made to the nation.
Part I: March 5 at 2pm (Eleanor Roosevelt to Jacqueline Kennedy)
Part II: March 24 at 2pm (Ladybird Johnson to Nancy Reagan)
Part III: April 10 at 2pm (Barbara Bush to Melania Trump)

7:30 PM MINDFULNESS MEDITATION with Carolyn Carpentiere

KEEPING MANHASSET HEALTHY 2018 ~ Take an hour...Just for you.

Meditation helps us to slow down our busy minds and silently observe our thoughts. Our thoughts shape our days and our lives, so by sitting still and paying close attention we can become more aware of what comes up in the mind. As we become more aware, we can choose the direction of our thoughts. Studies have shown that awareness has a powerful effect on healing the mind and body. By focusing and leading the mind away from stressful thoughts toward peaceful thoughts we relieve stress and strengthen the immune system.

The Frick Collection is organizing an exhibition of Francisco de Zurbarán’s series, Jacob and His Twelve Sons. The ambitious series of thirteen life-size paintings depicts the Old Testament figures. On loan from Auckland Castle, in England, the works by the Spanish Golden Age master Francisco de Zurbarán (1598–1664) have never traveled outside Europe.  Zurbarán made the series between 1640 and 1644, based on the Book of Genesis story in which Jacob on his deathbed, called together his 12 sons, who would become the founders of the 12 tribes of Israel.  The series was originally intended to travel, as Catholic propaganda, to the New World where it was commonly believed that indigenous people such as the Aztecs were a lost tribe of Israel. For unknown reasons, the series did not make it to the Americas.   One account states that English pirates stole the paintings.  By 1756, the series was in the possession of the prince-bishop of Durham, Richard Trevor, who resided in Auckland Castle. Bishop Trevor interpreted the subject of the series as a symbols of religious tolerance, a cause that he favored and promoted, at a time when in England, non-Anglican religious groups were treated with intolerance and contempt.

11:00 AM  -  12:30 PM BOOK ENDS CAFE: LITTLE FIRES EVERYWHERE, by Celeste Ng

In the Shaker Heights suburb, everything is planned – from the layout of the winding roads, to the colors of the houses, to the successful lives its residents will lead. And no one embodies this spirit more than Elena Richardson, whose guiding principle is playing by the rules.

Enter Mia Warren – an enigmatic artist and single mother – who arrives in this idyllic bubble with her daughter Pearl, and rents a house from the Richardsons. Soon Mia and Pearl become more than tenants as the Richardson children are drawn to the mother-daughter pair. But Mia carries with her a mysterious past and a disregard for the status quo that threatens to upend this ordered community.

7:00 PM NORTH SHORE AUDUBON: SAVING JAMAICA BAY

"Saving Jamaica Bay" tells the story of how one community fought government inaction and overcame Hurricane Sandy to clean up and restore the largest open space in New York City, which had become a dumping ground for garbage, sewage and bullet-riddled mobsters. Narrated by Academy-Award winning actress Susan Sarandon, Saving Jamaica Bay underscores the importance of citizen action and the role of urban nature in protecting our cities from the effects of climate change.

With more than a decade of experience working on environmental issues, Dan is ideally positioned to produce this first-ever, full-length documentary on Jamaica Bay. He is the author of the only general readership book on the bay’s history (“Jamaica Bay,” Arcadia Press, 2006), and spent years as the editor of a local newspaper covering Jamaica Bay, the residents who depend on it, and the challenges it faces. A graduate of Columbia University, Dan currently works in the renewable energy industry.

2:00 PM GRANT WOOD: AMERICAN GOTHIC AND OTHER FABLES with Thomas Germano

Grant Wood (1891-1942) was an American regionalist painter from Iowa best known for his 1930 painting, American Gothic, the most recognizable painting in 20th century American art. Grant Wood's art consists of subjects of Americana, fables and populist images of rural America that draw from an American identity created during the isolationist period that followed WWI. Wood's art created a world of harmony and prosperity that would address America's need for reassurance at a time of economic and social upheaval created by the Great Depression, The Dust Bowl and the disturbances that led up to WWII. Grant Wood crafted images that speak both to American identity and the isolation of modern life. The Whitney Museum of American Art, NYC will host an exhibition of Grant Wood's early Arts and Crafts decorative objects, Impressionist oils through his mature paintings including 'American Gothic', the murals, and book illustrations  from March 2-June 10, 2018.

2:00 PM MUSEUM HIGHLIGHTS with Ines Powell: BARTOLOME ESTEBAN MKURILLO AND THE GOLDEN AGE OF SPAIN

Bartolomé Estebán Murillo (1617-1682) was a leading Sevillian painter of the Golden Age of Spain.  Murillo remained one of the most admired and popular of all European artists in the 18th and early 19th century. The market for pictures by Murillo was so strong that the royal authorities at one point prohibited their export from Spain. Murillo himself never left Spain.  He began his training by working as an apprentice to local painters in Seville.  His early works were very much influenced by Velázquez, and Zurbarán.  Although Murillo painted some genre works, the bulk of his works were religious.  Murillo’s early style was highly realistic, but it became softer, more tender and lighter when he became familiar, during a trip to Madrid in 1658, with the works of Rubens and van Dyck. Murillo’s influence dominated the Sevillian School for over a century.

An important team from the 1960s through the 1990s, composer John Kander and lyricist Fred Ebb created a number of innovative musicals, two of which have returned to Broadway and have now run for more than five years each: Cabaret and Chicago. Most recently, Chicago has emerged in an award-winning film version. Other Kander and Ebb shows include The Happy Time, Zorba, 70, Girls, 70, Woman of the Year, The Rink, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Steel Pier, Flora, The Red Menace—an early vehicle for Liza Minnelli—and The Act—a later show created specifically for Minnelli (as was the television musical presentation Liza with a Z). The songs of Kander and Ebb were also presented in a very successful Off-Broadway Revue . . . and the World Goes Round. Their songs include The World Goes Round, Colored Lights, Don’t Tell Mama, Cabaret, The Happy Time, All That Jazz, Razzle Dazzle, and  New York, New York.

1:00 PM LIVE THEATER: MIKE AND THE HUBBLE with David Houston

This is a 1-hour "radio style" dramatic reading (with background music and effects) from the pages of SPACEMAN by Mike Massimino, , and from NASA sources. With actors Diana Heinlein and David Houston.

David Houston's dramatic play is based on the 2018 NORTH SHORE READS SELECTION ~ ONE ISLAND, ONE BOOK

Publisher’s Weekly: “What could have been a rote, stoic memoir recounting dates and stats proves to be anything but. This is an engaging and uplifting memoir that’s sure to give readers a deeper appreciation for the U.S. space program and inspire some future astronauts.”

Bill Nye, CEO of the Planetary Society: “Inspired by moonwalkers, Mike grew up, became an astronaut, and fixed the Hubble Space Telescope, all the while remaining some kinda humble. You can’t help but follow him from Long Island to the bottom of the spacewalk practice pool, then 350 miles up and back. He’s a spaceman through and through; he tells how hard work can take you out of this world.”

About the Author: A Long Islander, Mike Massimino was born August 19, 1962 in Oceanside and raised in Franklin Square. He grew up a working class kid whose seemingly unreachable dream of becoming an astronaut and going to space was realized in an unlikely journey that was driven by determination and commitment and realized with hard work and humor. After two missions to the Hubble Telescope and four space walks to make critical repairs to the telescope, Mike is now the Senior Space Advisor to the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, a Columbia University professor, an author, a media personality, and an in-demand speaker. Mike has appeared on “The Big Bang Theory” six times, as well as frequent appearances on news programs, Neil deGrasse Tyson’s “Star Talk” radio and television shows, “The Late Show with David Letterman,” Craig Ferguson’s new series “Join or Die” as well as his earlier ”The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.” Mike married his wife Carola on August 11, 1989, and they have two children: daughter Gabriella and son Daniel. Mike’s most recent honor was the renaming of the street where he grew up to “Mike Massimino Street.”

2:00 PM THOMAS COLE'S AMERICAN CROSSINGS with Thomas Germano

Thomas Cole (1801–1848) America's greatest 19th century landscape artist was born in northern England at the start of the industrial revolution, and immigrated with his family to the United States in 1818. Cole traveled extensively throughout England (1829–31) and Italy (1831-32,) returning to America to create some of his most ambitious works, notably The Oxbow and The Course of Empire works which inspired a new generation of American painters.Cole's passion for the American wilderness manifested into strong visual warnings of the harsh ecological cost of unchecked development of the land. Cole's dialogue with English Romantic painters of the mid-19th century  including Richard Martin, Turner and Constable and his influences on the next generation of American landscape painters including Asher Durand and Frederic Edwin Church, place Cole, the founder of the Hudson River School into a global context. Professor Germano will present a visual lecture on Thomas Cole: Atlantic Crossings, related to the exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art from January 30-May 13, 2018.

2:00 PM MUSEUM HIGHLIGHTS with Ines Powell: EDOUARD MANET: THE GENTLEMAN PAINTER WHO INVENTED MODERNITY

Édouard Manet (1832- 18830 was a French painter who rebelled against the accepted traditions of painting of his time.  Early in his career he began to experiment with new techniques of representation and he also departed from traditional subject matter by depicting events and circumstances from his own life. Manet was the eldest son of an official in the French Ministry of Justice, who expected his son to become a naval officer.  Contrary to his father’s wishes, Manet decided to study art and he went to Paris to train in the traditional studio of history painter Thomas Couture and to copy works at the Louvre Museum. For much of his career, Manet’s subjects and his detached approach to painting produced one critical scandal after another.  Only at the end of his career, did Manet begin to be recognized for the achievements and innovations

Music by Giacomo Puccini    Libretto by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica

Giacomo Puccini composed nine operas and one operetta, eight of which remain in the repertories of most opera houses around the world. Set in the late 19th-Century Latin Quarter of Paris, La Bohème presents us with a group of poverty-stricken young artists as they fall in and out of love, quarrel and reconcile, live, love and die. Indeed the four lead characters—Rodolfo and Mimi, Marcello and Musetta—have some of the most memorable arias, duets, and ensemble moments in all of opera, including, in the first act alone, Rodolfo’s “Che gelida manina” (“Your tiny hand is cold”), Mimi’s “Sì, mi chiamano Mimi” (“Yes, I’m known as Mimi”), and their love duet “O soave fanciulla!” (“Oh sweet young woman!”). Later highlights include Musetta’s waltz, a quartet, and a famous aria to an old coat.

2:00 PM LEONARDO DA VINCI, by Walter Isaacson with Thomas Germano

Professor Thomas Germano will present a visual lecture on Leonardo da Vinci, contextualizing the 2017, New York Times bestselling book by Walter Isaacson. Walter Isaacson has written about Renaissance men, polymaths and visionaries including Albert Einstein, Benjamin Franklin, and Steve Jobs and has finally written about The Renaissance era in his latest book on the artist, Leonardo da Vinci who was capable of making connections between the sciences and the humanities. The New Yorker described Isaacson's Leonardo da Vinci as A powerful story of an exhilarating mind and life...a study in creativity: how to define it, how to achieve it. Professor Germano will highlight the Salvator Mundi painting which recently sold for $450.3 million and Walter Isaacson supported its authenticity for reasons related to the drawing changes in the hand.

He was the “wunderkind” of the concert stage, the ballet, and the musical theatre, and later a master of the opera, educational television, the conductor’s podium, and the lecture hall as well. In a little more than a year in the early 1940s he made his debut as conductor of the New York Philharmonic, conducted the premiere of his first symphony as well as his first ballet score for Fancy Free, and ended with the Broadway opening of his musical comedy, On The Town. He straddled the worlds of serious and popular music, and created several memorable musical theatre pieces including Wonderful Town, Candide, West Side Story, and Mass. Much of his work celebrated New York City from upper west side street gangs, to Greenwich Village arty types, to sailors on shore leave. His songs included “New York, New York,” “Lonely Town,” “Ohio,” “Tonight,” “Maria,” “I Feel Pretty,” and “Glitter and Be Gay.”

7:00 PM BOOK TALK FOR NIGHT OWLS: KILLER ANGELS (The Civil War Trilogy #2), by Michael Shaara

The four days of the Battle of Gettysburg were the bloodiest in our nation’s history.  One of the armies fought with the dream of freedom while the other army fought to retain a way of life.  More than rifles and bullets were carried on to the battlefield.  There were also memories, promises, loves, futures and innocence. This dramatic re-creation of the battle for America’s destiny won a Pulitzer Prize.

7:00 PM BOOK TALK FOR NIGHT OWLS: NOTHING TO ENVY (Ordinary Lives in North Korea), by Barbara Demick

An award-winning journalist follows the lives of six North Korean citizens over the chaotic period that saw the death of Kim Il-sung, the rise to power of his son Kim Jung-Il, and a famine that killed one-fifth of the population.  Demick brings to life what it means to live under a repressive totalitarian regime today.  Deep in the country, beyond the reach of government censors, her subjects fall in love, raise families, nurture ambitions and struggle for survival.

Are you finding it’s difficult to maintain your focus toward a writing goal?  Do you feel that outsiders could divert you from your vision?  Are you afraid joining a writers’ group might be intimidating? Writers require both the seclusion to write and readers.  Other writers are the best readers.  We strive to be honest but kind when communicating our critique.  We also share knowledge on the topics of writing conferences and workshops, publishing, agent sources, and marketing.  We also host guest speakers. Come join us.
