2:00 PM CELEBRATE LITERARY LUMINARIES ~ WILLIAM FAULKNER

In an exciting new monthly program,Dr. Lynch will celebrate literary luminaries in recognition of their birthdays or anniversaries of extraordinary publications.  Selections for her evocative reading aloud will be drawn from various genres, countries, and time periods.  Each author can inspire, stimulate, and move us with his/her unique talents.

William Faulkner (b. September 25, 1897) Readings: A Rose for Emily, and an excerpt from The Sound and the Fury
Creator of the fictional Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi, Faulkner won the 1949 Nobel Prize for Literature.  Mastering the stream of consciousness technique, he gave us aristocrats, poor whites, slaves, descendants of slaves, Gothic settings, and grotesque situations. The result:  an uncomfortable, often violent, always complex picture of the American South. (Readings: A Rose for Emily; and an excerpt from The Sound and the Fury)

2:00 PM VISUAL ART LECTURE: DALE CHIHULY AT NYBG with Professor Thomas Germano

Exhibiting through October 29, 2017, new installations created by world-renowned glass artist, Dale Chihuly (b.1941) for The New York Botanical Gardens complement the Garden’s landscape and architecture. On view are more than 20 installations, as well as a display of the artist's drawings. Three new works—Koda studies—provide a rare opportunity to view the stunning effects of reflection and light created by these colored panels as day transitions to night. In an homage to Chihuly's first NYBG exhibition in 2006, Blue Herons, originally in the Tropical Pool, are showcased in a new display within the Conservatory, itself considered a work of glass art. These graceful forms are among many of Chihuly’s artworks seen within the grand architecture of the landmark Victorian-style glasshouse, including White Tower with Fiori. Other sites feature the artist’s creations throughout The NYBG’s 250-acre National Historic Landmark landscape. These unique works highlight the close relation between Chihuly’s organic shapes and the natural environment.
Professor Thomas Germano will present a visual lecture discussing the art of Dale Chihuly and specifically, his current NYBG show.

The Department of Egyptian Art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art was established in 1906.  That same year, the Museum began an excavation program in Egypt that continued for 30 years and brought innumerable treasures into the collection. Today, The Metropolitan Museum of Art has one of the richest and most comprehensive Egyptian collections in the world.  It comprises an estimated 24,000 objects, dating from 3,000 B.C.E. to 400C.E.—from prehistoric Egypt through the Byzantine occupation during the reign of Emperor Justinian.  The objects in the collection reflect the history, daily life, religious beliefs and aesthetic values of the ancient Egyptians.

7:00 PM AUTHOR VISIT & BOOK SIGNING with Leo Ullman: 796 DAYS

Hiding as a child in occupied Amsterdam during WWII and then coming to America

A mesmerizing first-person story of a young Jewish boy pushed into hiding over a period of nearly two and a half years during WWII with total strangers who did not know who he was, while his parents hid in an attic elsewhere, not knowing where their son was or whether he was alive. This all in the heart of Amsterdam during the brutal occupation by the Nazis.

Their family, long established, leading honest, law-abiding, normal and comfortable lives were suddenly forced to (in their own words) disappear,to become illegal, and to live like rats to avoid capture and deportation to killing camps. Yet they survived, facing constant fear of death, house-to-house searches, betrayal, disease and hunger, until liberated by the Allies.

They then left their home, their country and their friends to start anew, in the U.S., seeking freedom from oppression. They quickly grew roots, becoming active and involved in their chosen community, and were able to succeed with zeal and good fortune.

This chronicle includes not only Leo Ullman's own personal story, but stories of other family members and their often miraculous survival. The book contains numerous unique photos, copies of documents and correspondence in support of the stories, as well as valuable historical and factual context of those terrible times.

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY NPR AND THE TIMES (UK)

This version of the Bennet family—and Mr. Darcy—is one that you have and haven’t seen before: Liz is a magazine writer who, like her yoga instructor sister, Jane, lives in New York City. When their father has a health scare, they return to their childhood home in Cincinnati to help—and discover that the sprawling Tudor they grew up in is crumbling and the family is in disarray. Youngest sisters Kitty and Lydia are too busy with their CrossFit workouts and Paleo diets to get jobs. Mary, the middle sister, is earning her third master’s degree and barely leaves her room, except for those mysterious Tuesday-night outings she won’t discuss. And Mrs.Bennet has one thing on her mind: how to marry off her daughters. Enter Chip Bingley, a handsome new-in-town doctor. At a Fourth of July barbecue, Chip takes an immediate interest in Jane, but Chip’s neurosurgeon friend Fitzwilliam Darcy reveals himself to be much less charming. . .

2:00 PM CELEBRATE LITERARY LUMINARIES ~ JOHN KEATS

In an exciting new monthly program, Dr. Lynch will celebrate literary luminaries in recognition of their birthdays or anniversaries of extraordinary publications.  Selections for her evocative reading aloud will be drawn from various genres, countries, and time periods.  Each author can inspire, stimulate, and move us with his/her unique talents.

JOHN KEATS  (b. October 31, 1795)
Barely known as a poet during his life, dead at 25, Keats was posthumously recognized as a genius among the English Romantic poets.  “I have lov’d the principle of beauty in all things, and if I had time, I would have made myself remembered,” he wrote to his beloved, Fanny Brawne.  Keats looked at relationships among imagination, experience, art, and illusion, always in the face of beauty, which conveyed, for him, truth. (On First Looking Into Chapman’s Homer, Ode on a Grecian Urn, Ode to a Nightingale, When I Have Fears)

LADIES & GENTLEMAN & CHILDREN OF ALL AGES: THE HISTORY OF THE CIRCUS!

Visual History Lecture with Marilyn Carminio

When the final curtain fell on the Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus last May, a 146-year American tradition came to an end.  This lecture presentation will trace circus history from the days of the Greeks & Romans to the present with special attention to the role of the circus in 19th century America.

The circus is a world within a world filled with acrobats, clowns, tightrope walkers, contortionists, bareback riders, lions, tigers, outrageous sideshows, and more.  On our journey we'll meet two of America's greatest showmen ~ P.T. Barnum and John Ringling ~ who created the golden age of American circuses. We will hear the moving story of George & Willie, two brothers kidnapped during the 1920s and enslaved in a circus sideshow.

If you ever dreamed as a child about running away from home to join the circus, step right up and take a trip into the magical history of the circus!

7:00 PM NORTH SHORE AUDUBON Presents BIRD BANDING BASICS

Bird Banding is the attachment of a small, individually numbered metal or plastic tag to the leg of a wild bird to enable individual identification. Robert Paxton says “There is nothing that we know about bird behavior that doesn’t come from banding them: where they go, how long they live, whether they are monogamous or polygamous, how many you have at your feeder, where they winter, where they breed. You think you have one at your feeder and then you start banding them and you have ten. Everything we know about bird behavior you have to be able to identify the individual bird and that is done by banding.” Lecturer:  Robert Paxton, who himself was a master bird bander for 50 years, only does bird extraction from mist nets now. He has been retired for a few years. He is also a professor emeritus of history at Columbia University.

2:00 PM VISUAL ART LECTURE: WOMEN ABSTRACT ARTISTS (1945-1970) with Professor Thomas Germano

Societal shifts in the post WWII era made it possible for more women to work professionally as artists, yet their work was often dismissed in the male dominated art world. Reflecting an international language that transcended national and regional narratives, abstraction dominated artistic practice during these years. Inspired by the MoMA's 'Making Spaces' exhibit and drawn mostly from MoMA's collection, works presented will range from the boldly gestural canvases of Lee Krasner, Helen Frankenthaler, and Joan Mitchell; geometries by Lygia Clark, Lygia Pape, and Gego; reductive abstractions of Agnes Martin, Anne Truitt, and Jo Baer; fiber weavings of Magdalena Abakanowicz, Sheila Hicks, and Lenore Tawney; and the process-oriented sculptures of Lee Bontecou, Louise Bourgeois, and Eva Hesse. Join Professor Thomas Germano who will present this visual lecture that reflects the MoMA's 2017 'Making Spaces' exhibition.

Profiles Series: Men and Women Who Shaped America and the World

In November 2017 New York marks its centennial support of the vote for women in 1917.  The extraordinary – and long – lives of New Yorkers Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony illustrate how sustained civic engagement can set the stage for significant social changes.  The collaborations of these two women can be compared with the earlier partnership of Jefferson and Madison.

2:00 PM MUSEUM HIGHLIGHTS with Ines Powell: A VIRTUAL VISIT TO THE GREEK GALLERIES AT THE MMA

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has one of the most comprehensive collections of Ancient Greek art in North America.  The works range from the prehistoric period (ca. 4500 B.C.) to the end of the Hellenistic period (31B.C.).  Among the strengths of the Greek collection are the painted vases and grave reliefs. The collection of archaic Attic sculpture is second only to that in Athens. The objects range from tiny to life-size and are made of virtually all the materials used by ancient artists: marble, limestone, terracotta, bronze, gold, silver, glass and even rarer substances such as wood, ivory and iron. We will study some of the finest examples in the Museum from the collections of Cycladic, Attic, Archaic, Geometric, Classical and Hellenistic periods.

2:00 PM BOOK ENDS CAFE:THE NEST, by Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney

Book Talk Leaders: Librarians Cheryl Kallberg and Anne May

You're invited to listen, enjoy, and participate if you wish - reading the book selection first is optional. Book selections are available at the Circulation Desk one month prior to each Book Talk. Coffee and cookies will be served.

A warm, funny and acutely perceptive debut novel about four adult siblings and the fate of the shared inheritance that has shaped their choices and their lives. Every family has its problems. But even among the most troubled, the Plumb family stands out as spectacularly dysfunctional. Years of simmering tensions finally reach a breaking point on an unseasonably cold afternoon in New York City as Melody, Beatrice, and Jack Plumb gather to confront their charismatic and reckless older brother, Leo, freshly released from rehab. Months earlier, an inebriated Leo got behind the wheel of a car with a nineteen-year-old waitress as his passenger. The ensuing accident has endangered the Plumbs' joint trust fund, The Nest, which they are months away from finally receiving. Meant by their deceased father to be a modest mid-life supplement, the Plumb siblings have watched The Nest’s value soar along with the stock market and have been counting on the money to solve a number of self-inflicted problems. In this tender, entertaining, and deftly written debut, Sweeney brings a remarkable cast of characters to life to illuminate what money does to relationships, what happens to our ambitions over the course of time, and the fraught yet unbreakable ties we share with those we love.

Casanova: The Seduction of Europe explores the 18th century across Europe through the eyes of one of its most colorful characters, Giacomo Casanova (1725--1798). The exhibition will be shown at the Kimbell Art Museum in TX from August 27 through December 31, 2017 before traveling to the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 2018.

GEORGE ELIOT (MARY ANN EVANS  b. November 22, 1819)
One of the “eminent Victorians,” Mary Ann Evans used the male pen name George Eliot in an effort to have her fiction taken seriously and to have it considered in a separate vein from her editorial work.  Intense realism marked her style and political concerns infused her plots.  Her characters, inhabiting small English villages, invite psychological interpretations.  (Excerpts from Silas Marner and Middlemarch)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has one of the most comprehensive collections of Ancient Roman art in North America.  The works range from the end of the Hellenistic period (31 B.C.) to the later Roman Empire (3rd century A.D.). In the Roman Galleries the objects are arranged chronologically and thematically and in every medium.  Although the Department of Greek and Roman art did not open until 1909, the very first object to enter the Museum’s collection was a Roman sarcophagus from Tarsus, donated in 1870.  The strength of the Roman collections includes Roman portrait busts in marble and bronze and Roman wall paintings.

Media matters always spark controversy in a democracy.  Key perspectives on the “Fourth Estate” can be gained from two remarkable careers: 1) Edward R. Murrow (who after years as an investigative journalist became head of the U.S. Information Agency); and 2) Bill Moyers (who resided in Garden City when he was Newsday publisher, and who produced a number of investigative documentaries, including “The Secret Government,” and “On Our Own Terms,” which addressed end of life decisions).

If for nothing else, we remember Jerome Kern today as the composer of the musical Show Boat and such unforgettable songs as Old Man River, Lovely to Look At, Look for the Silver Lining, Make Believe, Yesterdays, and They Didn’t Believe Me. But Kern made an even larger contribution to the American musical theatre. Working with Guy Bolton and P.G. Wodehouse, Kern paved the way for the great musicals of the 1920s and beyond. In their Princess Theatre shows such as Very Good, Eddie and Leave It To Jane, they set a standard for literacy and sophistication which would make possible the later innovations of Rodgers and Hart, George and Ira Gershwin, and many others.

The Victorian language of flowers was used to convey romantic expressions: honeysuckle for devotion, asters for patience, and red roses for love. But for Victoria Jones, it has been more useful in communicating mistrust and solitude. After a childhood spent in the foster-care system, Victoria is unable to get close to anyone, and her only connection to the world is through flowers and their meanings. Now eighteen and emancipated from the system with nowhere to go, Victoria realizes she has a gift for helping others through the flowers she chooses for them. But an unexpected encounter with a mysterious stranger has her questioning what’s been missing in her life. And when she’s forced to confront a painful secret from her past, she must decide whether it’s worth risking everything for a second chance at happiness.

2:00 PM VISUAL ART LECTURE: MICHELANGELO ~ DIVINE DRAFTSMAN & DESIGNER with Professor Thomas Germano

Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475–1564) was celebrated for the excellence of his disegno, the power of drawing and invention that provided the foundation for all the arts. Because of this, his contemporaries called him 'il divino,' or, 'the divine one.'
The Metropolitan Museum of Art's exhibition (November 13, 2017 - February 12, 2018) will present approximately 150 of Michelangelo's drawings, three of his marble sculptures, his earliest painting, his wood architectural model for a chapel vault, and many complementary works by other artists for comparison and context. The complete series of masterpiece drawings created for Tommaso de' Cavalieri and a monumental cartoon for his last fresco in the Vatican Palace will be among the works coming to the Met's exhibition. Selected from 54 public and private collections in the United States and Europe, the exhibition will examine Michelangelo's rich legacy as a supreme draftsman and designer. Professor Thomas Germano will present a visual lecture on the life, times and work of Michelangelo Buonarroti and introduce the works related to this 'once in a lifetime exhibition' in NYC.

Mark Twain and U.S. Grant may seem to be an unlikely duo, but they had a remarkable friendship and their lives and relationship illustrate key themes of a changing America.  No President has been re-evaluated higher than Grant by historians. Twain was ahead of the curve in appreciating the often misunderstood President and General as a gentle, humane man.  Twain has properly been called “The Lincoln of Our Literature.”  He was a master of irony with “The Gilded Age,” “Pudd’nhead Wilson,” and “The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg.”

2:00 PM MUSEUM HIGHLIGHTS with Ines Powell: THE ART OF ISAMU NOGUCHI

Isamu Noguchi (1904–1988) was a sculptor, designer, landscape architect, and craftsman.  Isamo Noguchi was the illegitimate son of Yone Noguchi, a Japanese poet and Leonie Gilmour, an American writer and editor.  Noguchi lived in Japan until the age of 13 when he moved to Indiana.  As a pre-med university student at Columbia University, he began taking sculpture classes on New York’s Lower East Side. Thanks to a Guggenheim Fellowship, Noguchi was able to go to Paris in 1927 and to find work in Brancusi’s studio.  Under Brancusi’s influence, Noguchi turned to modernism, abstracting and reducing his forms and infusing his highly finished pieces with an emotional expressiveness.  For the rest of his long career, Noguchi was based in New York, but travelled extensively in Asia, Mexico and Europe.  He created numerous celebrated public works worldwide, all reflecting Noguchi’s belief in the social significance of sculpture. In 1985, Noguchi opened The Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum, in Long Island City, New York. The Museum, established and designed by the artist, marked the culmination of his commitment to public spaces

2:00 PM CELEBRATE LITERARY LUMINARIES: JANE AUSTEN

In an exciting new monthly program, Dr. Lynch will celebrate literary luminaries in recognition of their birthdays or anniversaries of extraordinary publications.  Selections for her evocative reading aloud will be drawn from various genres, countries, and time periods.  Each author can inspire, stimulate, and move us with his/her unique talents.

The 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s death (d. July 18, 1817) heralded a yearlong celebration and the issuing of a bank note in the U.K. with Austen’s airbrushed likeness.  She published anonymously, which was not uncommon for women writers at the time, and she achieved fame posthumously.  “Janeites” worldwide now discuss her novels, which deliciously chide British society and  survey women’s social status, financial dependence, and marriage pursuits.

A comic ballet dating from 1789 has been reconstructed and preserved in several versions. In 1960 Sir Frederick Ashton created a new production for the Royal Ballet of England which remains a delightful rendition of the traditional comic story of a young boy getting the girl he loves despite the opposition of her mother who wishes the daughter to marry a dimwitted, but very rich young man. The work includes a clog dance, a Maypole dance, a violent storm, and an extraordinarily beautiful pas de deux.

2:00 PM MUSEUM HIGHLIGHTS with Ines Powell: ZUBARAN MASTERPIECES ON LOAN FROM AUCKLAND CASTLE

Exhibition at the Frick Collection, New York, January 31, 2018 to April 22, 2018

The Frick Collection is organizing an exhibition of Francisco de Zurbarán’s series, Jacob and His Twelve Sons. The ambitious series of thirteen life-size paintings depicts the Old Testament figures. On loan from Auckland Castle, in England, the works by the Spanish Golden Age master Francisco de Zurbarán (1598–1664) have never traveled outside Europe.  Zurbarán made the series between 1640 and 1644, based on the Book of Genesis story in which Jacob on his deathbed, called together his 12 sons, who would become the founders of the 12 tribes of Israel.  The series was originally intended to travel, as Catholic propaganda, to the New World where it was commonly believed that indigenous people such as the Aztecs were a lost tribe of Israel. For unknown reasons, the series did not make it to the Americas.   One account states that English pirates stole the paintings.  By 1756, the series was in the possession of the prince-bishop of Durham, Richard Trevor, who resided in Auckland Castle. Bishop Trevor interpreted the subject of the series as a symbols of religious tolerance, a cause that he favored and promoted, at a time when in England, non-Anglican religious groups were treated with intolerance and contempt.

2:00 PM MUSEUM HIGHLIGHTS with Ines Powell: BARTOLOME ESTEBAN MKURILLO AND THE GOLDEN AGE OF SPAIN

Bartolomé Estebán Murillo (1617-1682) was a leading Sevillian painter of the Golden Age of Spain.  Murillo remained one of the most admired and popular of all European artists in the 18th and early 19th century. The market for pictures by Murillo was so strong that the royal authorities at one point prohibited their export from Spain. Murillo himself never left Spain.  He began his training by working as an apprentice to local painters in Seville.  His early works were very much influenced by Velázquez, and Zurbarán.  Although Murillo painted some genre works, the bulk of his works were religious.  Murillo’s early style was highly realistic, but it became softer, more tender and lighter when he became familiar, during a trip to Madrid in 1658, with the works of Rubens and van Dyck. Murillo’s influence dominated the Sevillian School for over a century.

An important team from the 1960s through the 1990s, composer John Kander and lyricist Fred Ebb created a number of innovative musicals, two of which have returned to Broadway and have now run for more than five years each: Cabaret and Chicago. Most recently, Chicago has emerged in an award-winning film version. Other Kander and Ebb shows include The Happy Time, Zorba, 70, Girls, 70, Woman of the Year, The Rink, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Steel Pier, Flora, The Red Menace—an early vehicle for Liza Minnelli—and The Act—a later show created specifically for Minnelli (as was the television musical presentation Liza with a Z). The songs of Kander and Ebb were also presented in a very successful Off-Broadway Revue . . . and the World Goes Round. Their songs include The World Goes Round, Colored Lights, Don’t Tell Mama, Cabaret, The Happy Time, All That Jazz, Razzle Dazzle, and  New York, New York.

2:00 PM MUSEUM HIGHLIGHTS with Ines Powell: EDOUARD MANET: THE GENTLEMAN PAINTER WHO INVENTED MODERNITY

Édouard Manet (1832- 18830 was a French painter who rebelled against the accepted traditions of painting of his time.  Early in his career he began to experiment with new techniques of representation and he also departed from traditional subject matter by depicting events and circumstances from his own life. Manet was the eldest son of an official in the French Ministry of Justice, who expected his son to become a naval officer.  Contrary to his father’s wishes, Manet decided to study art and he went to Paris to train in the traditional studio of history painter Thomas Couture and to copy works at the Louvre Museum. For much of his career, Manet’s subjects and his detached approach to painting produced one critical scandal after another.  Only at the end of his career, did Manet begin to be recognized for the achievements and innovations

2:00 PM MUSIC & DANCE: LA BOHEME with Dr. James Kolb

Music by Giacomo Puccini    Libretto by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica

Giacomo Puccini composed nine operas and one operetta, eight of which remain in the repertories of most opera houses around the world. Set in the late 19th-Century Latin Quarter of Paris, La Bohème presents us with a group of poverty-stricken young artists as they fall in and out of love, quarrel and reconcile, live, love and die. Indeed the four lead characters—Rodolfo and Mimi, Marcello and Musetta—have some of the most memorable arias, duets, and ensemble moments in all of opera, including, in the first act alone, Rodolfo’s “Che gelida manina” (“Your tiny hand is cold”), Mimi’s “Sì, mi chiamano Mimi” (“Yes, I’m known as Mimi”), and their love duet “O soave fanciulla!” (“Oh sweet young woman!”). Later highlights include Musetta’s waltz, a quartet, and a famous aria to an old coat.

Cheever, plagued by dark moods and alcoholism, probably did not have many happy birthdays; however, he wrote superb short stories and a few novels and has been called “the Chekhov of the American suburbs.”

2:00 PM MUSIC & DANCE: LEONARD BERNSTEIN with Dr. James Kolb

He was the “wunderkind” of the concert stage, the ballet, and the musical theatre, and later a master of the opera, educational television, the conductor’s podium, and the lecture hall as well. In a little more than a year in the early 1940s he made his debut as conductor of the New York Philharmonic, conducted the premiere of his first symphony as well as his first ballet score for Fancy Free, and ended with the Broadway opening of his musical comedy, On The Town. He straddled the worlds of serious and popular music, and created several memorable musical theatre pieces including Wonderful Town, Candide, West Side Story, and Mass. Much of his work celebrated New York City from upper west side street gangs, to Greenwich Village arty types, to sailors on shore leave. His songs included “New York, New York,” “Lonely Town,” “Ohio,” “Tonight,” “Maria,” “I Feel Pretty,” and “Glitter and Be Gay.”

Are you finding it’s difficult to maintain your focus toward a writing goal?  Do you feel that outsiders could divert you from your vision?  Are you afraid joining a writers’ group might be intimidating? Writers require both the seclusion to write and readers.  Other writers are the best readers.  We strive to be honest but kind when communicating our critique.  We also share knowledge on the topics of writing conferences and workshops, publishing, agent sources, and marketing.  We also host guest speakers. Come join us.
