7:00 PM NORTH SHORE AUDUBON PRESENTS: PREPARING FOR CLIMATE CHANGE

Mark Lowery, NYS DEC
Our changing climate is affecting both human-built environments and ecological communities. Tropical storms make headlines, but other climate-related risks are also on the increase. Signals of climate change include alternating fierce droughts and intense rains, unprecedented heat waves, earlier springs and later onset of frost, and the arrival of heat-tolerant species and subtle decline of those less heat-tolerant. These less dramatic changes might proceed quite far before their harmful effects are fully recognized. This presentation will include an overview of climate science and an examination of observed and expected effects of climate change, with a focus on New York’s birds and other natural resources. Our speaker will then describe several New York State programs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to our changing climate.
A 30-year veteran of the State Department of Environmental Conservation, Mark Lowery has served as a climate policy analyst in DEC’s Office of Climate Change since its formation in 2007. He previously worked as a senior wildlife biologist, regional citizen participation specialist and chief of DEC’s Bureau of Public Outreach. He currently oversees the office’s municipal support and adaptation programs, including Climate Smart Communities and implementation of the Community Risk and Resiliency Act, which has included leading work to adopt official state sea-level rise projections and to develop flood-risk management guidance. Mark holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster, Pa. and a master’s degree in environmental and forest biology from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry, Syracuse, N.Y.

2:00 PM LEONARDO DA VINCI, by Walter Isaacson with Thomas Germano

Professor Thomas Germano will present a visual lecture on Leonardo da Vinci, contextualizing the 2017, New York Times bestselling book by Walter Isaacson. Walter Isaacson has written about Renaissance men, polymaths and visionaries including Albert Einstein, Benjamin Franklin, and Steve Jobs and has finally written about The Renaissance era in his latest book on the artist, Leonardo da Vinci who was capable of making connections between the sciences and the humanities. The New Yorker described Isaacson's Leonardo da Vinci as A powerful story of an exhilarating mind and life...a study in creativity: how to define it, how to achieve it. Professor Germano will highlight the Salvator Mundi painting which recently sold for $450.3 million and Walter Isaacson supported its authenticity for reasons related to the drawing changes in the hand.

    Contact: Francine Furtado

The League of Women Voters of Port Washington-Manhasset invite you to join them on Wednesday evening, March 7, at 7 p.m., for a powerful film investigating the impacts of climate change on increased resource scarcity, migration, and conflict through the lens of US national security and global stability. The Age of Consequences includes Pentagon insiders who make the compelling case that if we continue with business as usual the consequences of climate change – extreme weather, drought, food and water shortages, global conflict, refugee crises, failed states and terrorism – will continue to increase in scale and frequency, with disastrous implications for peace and security. The film features interviews with distinguished admirals, generals and military veterans who delve beyond the press headlines.  Discussion will follow the film with Patti Wood, Founder and Executive Director of Grassroots Environmental Education.http://theageofconsequences.com/

7:30 PM MINDFULNESS MEDITATION - Explore the Wandering Mind with Carolyn Carpentiere

KEEPING MANHASSET HEALTHY 2018 ~ Take an hour...Just for you.

Often people think that meditation is about letting go of thoughts and stilling the mind but that is close to impossible.  Our minds think, question, judge, plan, speculate and that's okay.  We can learn a lot about ourselves by bringing oiur awareness to the wandering mind. We can turn our wandering minds into the focus of our meditation. The trick is to not get carried off into any one of those thoughts, but instead, to just keep noticing what comes up, let it go and see what comes up next.

2:00 PM CELEBRATE THE 100TH BIRTHDAY OF LEONARD BERNSTEIN with Dr. James Kolb

He was the “wunderkind” of the concert stage, the ballet, and the musical theatre, and later a master of the opera, educational television, the conductor’s podium, and the lecture hall as well. In a little more than a year in the early 1940s he made his debut as conductor of the New York Philharmonic, conducted the premiere of his first symphony as well as his first ballet score for Fancy Free, and ended with the Broadway opening of his musical comedy, On The Town. He straddled the worlds of serious and popular music, and created several memorable musical theatre pieces including Wonderful Town, Candide, West Side Story, and Mass. Much of his work celebrated New York City from upper west side street gangs, to Greenwich Village arty types, to sailors on shore leave. His songs included “New York, New York,” “Lonely Town,” “Ohio,” “Tonight,” “Maria,” “I Feel Pretty,” and “Glitter and Be Gay.”

"West Texas provides the setting for this 21st century bank heist western focusing on 2 brothers, Tanner, an ex-con recently released from prison and Toby, an unemployed oil worker and divorced father of 2 boys. After the death of their mother, Tanner and Toby risk losing their humble farm to Texas Midland Bank for unpaid taxes. The brothers team up to rob the bank in order to leave the property to Toby's two sons while pursued by a crusty Texas Ranger and his Native American partner. Stellar performances by Jeff Bridges, Chris Pine and Ben Foster bring a deep poignancy to this film while examining the desperate measures the brothers undertake to save their future generations from poverty. Nominated for 4 Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for Jeff Bridges."

7:30 PM  -  8:30 PM Northwell Presents: WHAT IS MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS AND WHAT KIND OF CHALLENGES DO PEOPLE WITH MS FACE?

with Asaff Harel MD

Multiple Sclerosis is a long-lasting, autoimmune disease that can affect the brain, spinal cord, and the optic nerves in the eyes. Multiple Sclerosis happens when the immune system attacks the coating surrounding nerve fibers, causing nerve damage. This damage means that the brain cannot send signals through the body correctly.  This can cause problems with vision, muscle control, balance, and other basic functions.  While there are several common symptoms, the effects and severity of the disease are highly variable and are often different for each individual.  Some people have mild symptoms, but others can have lots of trouble getting around and going about daily activities.  Existing treatment, as well as research studies, are aimed at trying to improve the life of people with Multiple Sclerosis.

7:30 PM BOOK TALK FOR NIGHT OWLS: KILLER ANGELS (The Civil War Trilogy #2), by Michael Shaara

The four days of the Battle of Gettysburg were the bloodiest in our nation’s history.  One of the armies fought with the dream of freedom while the other army fought to retain a way of life.  More than rifles and bullets were carried on to the battlefield.  There were also memories, promises, loves, futures and innocence. This dramatic re-creation of the battle for America’s destiny won a Pulitzer Prize.

2:00 PM THE GOLDEN AGE OF TELEVISION with Brian Rose

What Made the 1950s So Special for American TV?

American television was all set to launch in the 1930s, but its progress was interrupted by the start of World War II. Finally, by the end of the 1940s, NBC and CBS began broadcasting to their east coast affiliates. They offered viewers a wide variety of programs: situation comedies. vaudeville-style revues, and most impressively, live original dramas. Within a few years, these anthology programs, like Kraft Theatre and Ford Theatre, launched the careers of soon-to-be famous directors like Arthur Penn and John Frankenheimer, actors like Paul Newman and James Dean, and playwrights like Paddy Chayevsky and Rod Serling. But by the end of the 1950s, the era of live TV "theatre" was over. So too was New York City as a center of TV production. This presentation will look at the forces that made this "golden age" such an intriguing chapter in TV history and why it was so short-lived (including brief examinations of blacklisting and the TV quiz show scandals).

7:30 PM BOOK TALK FOR NIGHT OWLS: NOTHING TO ENVY (Ordinary Lives in North Korea), by Barbara Demick

An award-winning journalist follows the lives of six North Korean citizens over the chaotic period that saw the death of Kim Il-sung, the rise to power of his son Kim Jung-Il, and a famine that killed one-fifth of the population.  Demick brings to life what it means to live under a repressive totalitarian regime today.  Deep in the country, beyond the reach of government censors, her subjects fall in love, raise families, nurture ambitions and struggle for survival.

Are you finding it’s difficult to maintain your focus toward a writing goal?  Do you feel that outsiders could divert you from your vision?  Are you afraid joining a writers’ group might be intimidating? Writers require both the seclusion to write and readers.  Other writers are the best readers.  We strive to be honest but kind when communicating our critique.  We also share knowledge on the topics of writing conferences and workshops, publishing, agent sources, and marketing.  We also host guest speakers. Come join us.
